The Butternut Valley Alliance is accepting artist submissions for the annual "On the Trail of Art" forest exhibition, to be held June 13-14 at General Jacob Morris State Forest. Artists are invited to submit weatherproof work for outdoor display along a forest trail transformed into an immersive gallery. Artists may also contribute work to BVA's online auction. 41 year old Frank Giacalone of Walton, pleaded guilty to Felony Driving While Intoxicated in Delaware County Court, The plea was entered as part of a negotiated disposition where it is anticipated that Giacalone will be sentenced to 1 to 3 years in state prison. State Police responded to the report of a vehicle hit a fire hydrant on Mead Street in the Village of Walton, then backed up and drove away. A Trooper observed a piece of the vehicle’s front bumper near the fire hydrant, found the vehicle matching the description, missing a portion of its front bumper, Giacalone failed field sobriety tests & was arrested, he'll be sentenced at a later date.

State Police arrested 61 year old Frank Kovacs of Laurens after an Otsego County grand jury indictment. Kovacs has been charged with 2 counts of 1st degree Rape and 3 counts of Criminal Sexual Act. Kovacs is currently serving as the Mayor of the Village of Laurens in Otsego County. An investigation began in December of 2024 when a victim reported that over a decade ago, they had been sexually assaulted by Kovacs for several years, in multiple locations by means of forcible compulsion, intimidation and coercion when the victim was a teenager. Kovacs was remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $10,000 cash, $10,000 credit or $100,000 bond.

47 year old Nicholas Cartelli of Otego pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance last week. On January 3rd, Cartelli & a co-defendant possessed 1 or more preparations, compounds, mixtures, or substances containing a narcotic, Cartelli admitted that he possessed Heroin in the Village of Sidney, he was remanded to the Delaware County Jail to await his sentencing, which is set for August 5th, he will be sentenced to 4 years in state prison and 2 years of post-release supervision.

56 year old Ronald Roof of Franklin appeared in the Delaware County Court and was sentenced for Driving While Intoxicated, Roof had previously pleaded guilty to felony DWI, he was sentenced to 5 years of felony probation, and his license was revoked, he must have an Ignition Interlock Device installed on any vehicle he owns or drives if he ever obtains a driver’s license. If he violates his probation, he is subject to being re-sentenced to 1 and 1/3 to 4 years in jail.
The Delaware County Department of Public Works will be closing CR 18 in the Town of Stamford to through traffic at 7:00 am. daily June 17th and 18th , for culvert replacement/repair work. The road will be closed between the Village Line and Red Rock Road, approximately 600 feet north of Pearl Street. The road will be opened by the end of the day each day. The traveling public should use alternate routes.
There will be a Village Election for registered voters in the Village of Oxford today from 12:00 noon to 9:00 PM at the Oxford Fire Station, on Main Street. Offices on the ballot are Mayor & 2 seats for Trustee.

49 year old Keith Audette of Hamden, appeared in Delaware County Court and was sentenced to a 5-year term of probation supervision for the crime of Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. Audette had previously appeared in Delaware County Court in November and entered a plea of guilty to the charge, he had been previously convicted of Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated in Chenango County Court in 2015, he also admitted that he drove a motor vehicle in the Village of Walton on April 9, 2024, while under the influence of methamphetamine. Audette was also ordered to pay fines, fees, and a surcharge at a total amount of $1,570, his license was revoked, and he was ordered to provide a sample of his DNA for inclusion in the state DNA data base. If he violates any of the terms of probation, he may be re-sentenced to one and one third to four years in state prison.

Deposit & Windsor Firefighters responded to a basement fire in on 2nd Street in Deposit shortly before 7:00 PM Tuesday Night. Deposit Fire crews found the fire in the basement of a 2 story home, no injuries were reported, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Gilbertville Mount Upton Superintendent Annette Hammond announced that she will retire following the completion of her 10th year as superintendent and 16th overall at GMU. Hammond became GMU’s middle/high school principal in August 2009, and was named superintendent in August 2015. The District will begin conducting a search for a new Superintendent shortly.

State Police responded yesterday afternoon to at about 3:50 pm to a 3-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Highway 7 and County Highway 9 in the town of Oneonta. A preliminary investigation determined that a BMW was traveling on State Highway 7 when it struck a Toyota from behind while the Toyota was waiting to turn left onto County Highway 9, the Toyota was pushed into the path of a Chevrolet SUV and they collided head-on. The operator of the BMW, a 76-year-old male was pronounced deceased on scene, it is unknown at this time whether he died as a result of the collision or if he suffered a medical event. The operator of the Toyota, a 24-year-old male was transported to A.O Fox Hospital, The operator of the Chevrolet SUV, a 52-year-old male with 3 children were checked out on scene but not transported. The investigation is on-going.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 43 year old Randall Harmon of Sherburne for Criminal Contempt & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, after he violated specific conditions of an Order of Protection. Members of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office & Parole Officers made a home visit, in the home Officers located a female subject & a child, who had an order of protection against Harmon, Officers seized methamphetamine. Harmon was taken to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for processing, he was then remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on an active Parole Warrant as a result of the previous charges.
23 year old Bryce Farrell of Sidney appeared in Delaware County Court and pleaded guilty to Attempted Burglary, he admitted that on July 28, 2023, in the Village of Walton, he entered a building he did not have permission to be in for the purpose of committing a crime, 3 days later, an individual reported to Walton Police Department that his residence had been broken into and a safe stolen. Investigators reviewed security footage, identified Farrell as one of the burglars, an arrest warrant was issued & Farrell was apprehended by State Police in November. Judge Hubbard ordered the Delaware County Probation Department to conduct a pre-sentencing report. His sentencing is tentatively scheduled for March 11th.

Governor Kathy Hochul joined Superintendent Steven G. James in honoring 181 new State Troopers as they graduated today from the 215th session of the Basic School of the New York State Police Academy. The ceremony was held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany. Today’s graduation increases the State Police ranks to 5,183 sworn members. 46 of the new troopers will be assigned to Troop C in Sidney.

The State Department of Labor announced that the number of private sector jobs in the State decreased over the month by 2,900, or less than 0.1%, to 8,392,500 in September 2024. The State's unemployment rate held constant at 4.4% in September, the statewide labor force participation rate decreased from .1 to 61.2% in September.
Village of Greene officials announced that starting at 8:30 Friday morning, the Village Department of Public Works will be paving South Chenango Street from Greene Bowlodrome to Page Street. There will be no thru traffic, when that paving project is complete, the DPW will be paving Clinton Street from Birdsall Street to the Birdsall Street bridge.

34 year old Khaalid Lammie of Delhi was indicted by the Delaware County Grand Jury & was charged with 3 counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance. Lammie is accused of selling cocaine in the Village of Delhi on 3 occasions earlier this year, if he is convicted, he faces up to 9 years in state prison for each count, he was arraigned in Delaware County Court Tuesday & was released on his own recognizance.
State tax receipts totaled $54.6 billion through the first 6 months of State Fiscal Year 24-25, about $682 million higher than the state Division of the Budget estimated. Tax collections were $3.1 billion higher than those through September 2023, according to the monthly State Cash Report released by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. State Police BCI is investigating the suspicious death of 2 individuals on Parsons Road in Chenango Forks. 63 year old Scott Cleary of Chenango Forks, was located deceased in his residence, 38 year old Matthew Lott of Chenango Forks, was located deceased a quarter mile north of the residence near railroad tracks. Cleary and Lott lived in the residence, The investigation is on-going, there is no threat to the community, More information will be released when available.

21 year old Leyska Rivera-Mateo of Binghamton, was sentenced to 4.5 years in New York State Prison followed by 3 years post-release supervision for 2nd degree Assault, in Broome County Court. Rivera-Mateo went to Endicott on July 23, 2023, where she attacked a female victim by throwing her to the ground, pinned her & repeatedly punched & kicked her, dragged her by her hair down concrete stairs, and resumed the attack, the victim sustained multiple jaw fractures.
State Police are now accepting applications for the Trooper Entrance Examination, and testing for candidates will start on August 15th, Candidates can sign up to take the exam at joinstatepolice.ny.gov. Minimum qualifications needed to sign up for the examination, applicants must be a U.S. citizen, at least 20 years old and a maximum of 34 years old at the time of application.

Governor Kathy Hochul today outlined plans for the next 2 phases of the development project at the former Oakdale Mall in Johnson City. Efforts include the reuse of an adjacent vacant site for the construction of new housing, the creation of further commercial opportunities, Phase II and III of the project will include the construction of an 85,000 square-foot medical campus; the construction of a new 22,000 square-foot child care center. On Tuesday morning, a State Trooper in Bainbridge attempted to initiate a traffic stop but the operator failed to comply, a short time later, the Trooper observed the vehicle had struck a pole, a tree, damaged a yard and the vehicle had caught on fire & the driver fled the scene, Troopers located 39 year old Peter Puglisi of Unadilla, in the afternoon at an address on County Road 38 in the town of Bainbridge. Puglisi was arrested and issued appearance tickets for Criminal Mischief and Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Office in a Motor Vehicle, he is scheduled to appear in Bainbridge Town Court on July 15th.
Troopers were dispatched to the report of children locked inside a hot vehicle and screaming at the Oneonta Walmart parking lot on a 99 degree day. The children were exhibiting signs of distress from the heat, Good Samaritans gave the children water, they were removed from the car and were taken to Fox Hospital & 39 year old Kurtis Carpel of Mount Upton, NY was charged with 2 counts of Reckless Endangerment and 3 counts of Aggravated Driving While Impaired with Child as Passenger after an investigation revealed that he was impaired. Carpel was taken to Otsego County Jail for Centralized Processing and Arraignment.
The State Department of Transportation is advising motorists to expect traffic crossovers and lane reductions between exits 18 and 19 on Interstate 88 in the towns of Maryland and Worcester, for pavement rehabilitation work, starting today through October 31st. Eastbound motorists will be crossed over to the westbound side and traffic will be reduced one lane in each direction separated by a concrete barrier.

Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 43 year old Jeremie Hoyt of Davenport was sentenced to 20 years in state prison for his conviction of Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child. Between January and August of 2019, Hoyt engaged in at least 2 sexual acts with a child under 13 years old, he was sentenced to 20 years of in jail followed by 10 years of post-release supervision, he was also ordered to submit a DNA sample to the State DNA data-bank, he was ordered to pay a $1,000 crime victim’s fee & he must register as a sex offender after he is released from prison.
Chenango County Sheriff's Office responded to a small plane crash near Norwich Sunday afternoon. The pilot was pronounced dead at the scene & was the only occupant of the plane, the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office said the pilot was the only occupant of the plane. They were pronounced dead the scene. The investigation has been turned over to the National Safety Transportation Board.
5 municipalities in the Southern Tier were awarded the DEC Municipal Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure grant. Locally, The village of Sidney will receive more than $80,000 to install 2 fast chargers, the village of Fleischmanns will receive more than $7,500 for 2 Level 2 charging ports. The Delaware County DPW announced road work on county Routes 16 and 21 will take place in the coming weeks. Pavement rehabilitation work began today on county Route 21, from at the Walton village line heading north about 6 1/2 miles, that project will be complete by June 30. The department will begin work on county Route 16 on Monday, June 5, starting in Treadwell and progressing to state Route 10 in Fraser. that project should be completed by June 15. Drivers should expect extended delays during this work. Alternate routes are suggested.

Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation released its report on the death of Roger Lynch on August 6, 2021 in Franklin, which included review of radio transmissions, body-worn camera footage, and interviews. The investigation determined that a prosecutor would not be able to disprove justification beyond a reasonable doubt at trial & criminal charges against the State Trooper who shot Lynch are not warranted. On the evening of August 5th, members of several police agencies responded to a residence on Bob Holloway Road in Delhi, following reports that an individual had been shot, they learned that Lynch had shot multiple times at 1of the residents before driving away, Lynch was found at his house, he came out with a gun aimed under his chin. When the sergeant told him not to shoot himself, Lynch then leveled his shotgun on his shoulder and took aim at a trooper & 1 of the troopers fired his rifle at Lynch, who fell back into the house, where he was pronounced dead.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 22 year old Clarence Vanier of Laurens after a search warrant was executed at a residence in the Town of Laurens. Vanier was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance for a Hallucinogen, among other charges. Deputies were assisting the Oneonta Police Department with a search warrant at which time a large amount of Psilocybin mushrooms were located in the residence. Vanier was being held at the Otsego County Jail pending Central Arraignment.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 30-year-old Kassondra Pierce of Hamden for endangering the welfare of a child. Deputies received a complaint from Child Protective Services with possible allegations of physical abuse regarding a juvenile. Pierce is accused of striking the victim with excessive force, Pierce was processed and released with an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Hamden Court at a later date.
The State Labor department announced that the number of private sector jobs in New York State increased over the month by more than 27,000, to just over 8 Million in August. New York State's unemployment rate increased from 4.3% in July to 4.7% in August, The Labor Participation rate was just over 60%, equaling the number just prior to the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

Former Governor Andrew Cuomo won a lawsuit Tuesday in which he challenged New York’s defunct JCOPE agency’s attempt to seize his profits from a $5.1 million book deal his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. JCOPE determined that Cuomo improperly used state staff and resources while writing his 2020 memoir, "American Crisis.” they ordered him to surrender his compensation to the state. Albany County Supreme Court Justice Denise Hartman ruled in Favor of Cuomo Tuesday, JCOPE no longer exists & current Governor Kathy Hochul is looking to establish a new ethics commission.
The State Department of Labor announced that safety inspections of amusement rides statewide have been underway as the peak of fair season approaches. The Great New York State Fair starts on August 24th, Labor Department inspectors have been on site performing pre-inspections, with staff also meeting with vendors prior to Opening Day to go over safety precautions.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded Tuesday morning at the abandoned Vestal Hills Country Club, for the report of a person being shot with a Bow & Arrow. Deputies found 23-year-old Bayso Vannavongsa of Binghamton early Tuesday morning in the parking lot of the Country Club with a non-life threatening wound to his chest. He was transported to Wilson Hospital for evaluation. State police attempted to stop the vehicle that allegedly left the scene, and the 2 occupants, Savannah Perry and Carson Vanco of Endicott, fled but were found on Powderhouse Road. Police accuse Vanco of shooting the arrow at Vannavongsa, The investigation is on-going and criminal charges are expected.

Federal Prosecutors announced that 63 year old Timothy Deuel of Tioga County, pleaded guilty to 3 counts of possession of child pornography. Deuel was sentenced in the U.S. District Court in 2015 to 87 months imprisonment and 10 years supervised release as a result of his conviction for distribution of child pornography, he admitted that he again possessed approximately 1,000 images of child pornography and more than 200 video files of child pornography. Sentencing on the latest conviction will be on November 29th, Deuel faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of at least 5 years and up to life.
State Police responded to Otsego County Highway 13 and Hawks Road in the town of Pittsfield for a report of a vehicle on fire with a person trapped inside. Troopers learned that firefighters were already on scene and confirmed that the vehicle was fully engulfed with a person inside who was deceased. An investigation revealed that the 36-year-old female operator went off the roadway, struck an embankment and a tree.
Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched Tuesday to a 2 car motor vehicle accident at State Highway 23 and County Highway 10 in the Town of Davenport. Initial reports state that a car was traveling Northwest on County Highway 10, it entered the intersection of County Highway 10 and State Highway 23, when it was it was struck by a pickup truck traveling Southwest on State Highway 23. A female passenger in the car was pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver of the car suffered serious, life threatening injuries. The male driver of the pickup truck suffered minor injuries and his male passenger was uninjured. The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team, no tickets have been issued and no arrests have been made.

Village of Sidney Police Department responded Thursday night at about 9:50 PM, to a security alarm activation at Smoker's Choice at 6 Doran Lane, where a burglary was in progress, a suspect has been identified and an arrest is pending. While at Smoker's Choice, officers received a report of shots fired and a person with a firearm on Union Street at the Maria's convenience store, Police found no evidence of a discharged firearm, a store employee was checking the business for a break in & legally possessed a firearm, police discovered that a burglary was attempted at Maria's prior to the Smoker's Choice burglary. The investigation is ongoing.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli reported that the total cost of overtime in 2021 reached an all-time high at more than $924 million, up 8.7% from 2020. Total overtime hours worked at state agencies have increased by 38% since 2012, while the number of employees has declined by more than 10% at 10 major agencies. 66% of the state’s overtime in 2021 came from the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities & the Department of Corrections and the Office of Mental Health.
The State Health Department reported the latest statistics on the COVID 19 pandemic, and the results of Wednesday's testing statewide. Over 97,000 New Yorkers were tested Wednesday, with over 9200 positives, the statewide positivity rate is still slightly over 9%. Hospitalizations are back over 2400, with 233 Patients in an ICU bed & 70 on ventilators., there were 14 more deaths in hospitals & nursing homes Wednesday.
New Yorkers enrolled in SNAP will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for July, including those already at the maximum level of benefits. Eligible families will see the extra benefits post between today and Friday, July 22.
Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchack announced that 38 year old Shandel Terry of Binghamton was sentenced to 10 years in prison today in Broome County Court, following a guilty plea for criminal possession of a controlled substance. Terry was arrested following the execution of a search warrant in March of 2021, Terry possessed crack cocaine & fentanyl with intent to sell. Terry was also sentenced to serve 3 years of post release supervision at the conclusion of his jail term.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 25 year old Matthew Fenelon of Brooklyn for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation & a variety of other charges, following an investigation of a Rollover accident in the Town of Franklin July 5th. Deputies reported that the vehicle was operated by Fenelon, he was extricated from the vehicle and transported to a hospital by LifeNet. Deputies found that Fenelon was operating a vehcile with a suspended registration, his driving privileges were also suspended. On July 8th, Deputies made contact with Fenelon after he was released from the hospital & he was arrested & was released on appearance tickets for Town of Franklin Court at a later date.

Deputies reported that the vehicle was operated by Fenelon, he was extricated from the vehicle and transported to a hospital by LifeNet. Deputies found that Fenelon was operating a vehcile with a suspended registration, his driving privileges were also suspended. On July 8th, Deputies made contact with Fenelon after he was released from the hospital & he was arrested & was released on appearance tickets for Town of Franklin Court at a later date.

The State had an uptick in the positivity rate of COVID 19 tests Sunday, at 8.3%, which was significantly higher than the 7 day average of over 5%. Over 124,000 were tested Sunday, with over 10,300 testing positive. Former state Assemblyman Bill Magee died on Christmas Eve, at a nursing home in Morrisville, he was 81. Magee served from 1990 to 2018 in the State Assembly, representing a district that included Madison, Otsego and Oneida counties. He recently had the COVID virus, though an official cause of death has not been released.
Delaware County Public Health announced that the 11th & 12th patients have died of Covid-19 related complications. County officials announced 40 new cases since last Thursday, Christmas Eve, with 86 active cases, 3 hospitalized, 252 quarantined.

On October 6th, the Sidney Police Department received a complaint of a stolen motor vehicle from the Village of Sidney. The investigation revealed that the owner of the alleged stolen vehicle had filed a false report, the vehicle had not been stolen, the complaint was made to avoid being caught trespassing on private property. The vehicle was found stuck near the Pine Hill state forest & 20 year old Austin Wright of Sidney was charged with False written statement & Falsely reporting an incident. Wright was released on an appearance ticket.
Local government sales tax revenue declined by 5.2% in October compared to the same month last year, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The New York State Department of Health announced that they have led a study on multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children associated with COVID-19. The study describes 99 cases of the syndrome and concludes the emergence of the condition in the State followed widespread COVID-19 transmission and often is associated with cardiac dysfunction in children up to the age of 21. Of the 99 patients 36 had a pre-existing condition, the most common being obesity, Of the 99, there were two fatalities, the syndrome is compared to Kawasaki disease, and more studies will be conducted.
Former Delaware County Social Services Commissioner Dana Scuderi-Hunter has filed a lawsuit against the Delaware County Board of Supervisors, and Chairperson Tina Mole for wrongful dismissal. Scuderi-Hunter was suspended in early 2019, & was fired at the end of the suspension.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested Mark Tubbs and Angela Huggins both of Sidney, for 1 count each of Unlawful Possession of Marijuana and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The pair are accused of possessing marijuana in their apartment, where a 9 year old child also resided. The arrests came during the execution of arrest warrants at the Huggins and Tubbs residence by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team. Both Huggins and Tubbs will appear in the Village of Sidney Court shortly to answer these charges.
Delaware County Sheriff's Department Investigators arrested 35 year old Philip Albergo of Meridale and charged him with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Unlawfully Dealing With Fireworks and Dangerous Fireworks. Albergo was out on Probation on an unrelated charge, Probation Officers discovered a high capacity ammunition feeding device, which is banned in New York State, they also seized numerous unlawful fireworks. Albergo is being held at the Delaware County Correctional Facility as a Probation Violator, to be arraigned in the Town of Meredith Court on these charges at a later time.
The Town of Sidney Zoning Board of Appeals meeting, regarding the Muddy River Hops, that was originally scheduled for this evening at 7:00 PM has been cancelled. The meeting was due to be held in the Town of Sidney Office building at 44 Grand Street.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 39 year old Eric Rossman of Davenport for criminal possession of stolen property, following an investigation into a stolen vehicle in the Town of Harpersfield earlier this year. Deputies encountered Rossman after responding to an accident in the Town of Delhi where he left the scene, they also discovered that Rossman was operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, which led to several other charges. Rossman was arraigned at the Town of Davenport Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 secured bond, he will appear in the Town of Davenport and the Town of Delhi courts at a later date.
The Town of Hartwick will receive $1 million in grant money from the state for upgrades to the town’s water system. The money will be used to replace water mains, the auxiliary well and the primary well-house building, and to help pay for new mixers for the water storage tank and an emergency backup generator, as well as replacing or repairing water meters.

New York state’s health care jobs exceeded 1.2 million in 2017, according to a report released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Health care employment rose by more than 18 percent over the past decade, more than double the pace of overall employment growth. DiNapoli’s report found the health care industry in New York provided nearly $71 billion in wages, with an average annual wage of $57,200 in 2017. New York ranked 3rd in the nation for its share of health care jobs.

State Police responded to a report of an assault Friday in the Town of Lisle, where the victim suffered a serious injury. Troopers said that the alleged assailant is 26 year old Thomas Sessions of the Whitney Point. Sessions is described to as 6 feet tall, approximately 240 pounds with blonde hair and blue eyes; he was left the scene in a white pick-up truck with oversized tires and a loud muffler. State Police stopped a woman who disrupted a press conference at a State Police Substation at the Capitol in Albany yesterday with Governor Cuomo. The woman shouted obscenities & threw papers at the Governor; she was whisked away by troopers, while the Governor finished talking with reporters. The State Department of Environmental Conservation announced that trout fishing season opens Sunday. The sport fishing industry brought in an estimated $1.8 billion in economic activity, the DEC will stock 2.26 million catchable-size trout in 315 lakes and ponds and roughly 2,845 miles of streams across the state. State Police arrested 27 year old Charles Walsh of Sidney, for Criminal Trespass, Harassment and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. Troopers were dispatched to a residence in Deposit for a physical dispute Monday; Walsh fled the scene, but was apprehended by State Police Tuesday in Sidney. Walsh was arraigned in the village of Deposit and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $1,000 cash bail or $2,000 bond. He is scheduled to return to the village of Deposit Court on April 10th.

Oneonta Police arrested 33 year old John Gipson of Utica for criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, among other charges. Gipson was picked up on Main Street in Oneonta Friday, Police seized about 5.6 Grams of Crack Cocaine at the time of the arrest, Gipson faces court action shortly.
35 year old Steven Knauff of Oneonta faces numerous charges including criminal contempt, menacing, and criminal mischief & resisting arrest, for allegedly brandishing a kitchen knife. Oneonta police used a Taser to subdue Knauff following the report of a domestic dispute on March 8th. Knauff was arraigned & was sent to the Otsego County Jail Tuesday.
State Police arrested 55 year old Robert George of Sidney for Driving While Intoxicated, on State Highway 7 in the town of Bainbridge and observed traffic violations. George was released on tickets returnable to the town of Bainbridge on April 10th.

Delaware County Sheriff's department Investigators arrested 28-year-old Jeffrey Roberts, of Sayre, Pennsylvania as a Fugitive From Justice.. Roberts is charged with Retail Theft of Property, as well as several misdemeanor traffic offenses. Roberts was incarcerated at Delaware county Jail on an unrelated charge at the time of his arrest, and he will be arraigned as a Fugitive From Justice in the Town of Delhi Court at a later time.

State & Local fire investigators are trying to determine what started the fire early Tuesday morning at the former Cooperstown Motel at 90 Chestnut Street in the village of Cooperstown. The Heirs of Al O’Brien were expected to sell the property to the CVS Pharmacy chain, with a closing scheduled for August 22nd, the Village of Cooperstown board will hold a special meeting on Friday to discuss their option. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, the Motel had been empty for several months & furniture had been removed for auction.
According to a new study, New York State is among the worst places to have a baby. "Wallet Hub" compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across three key dimensions: Delivery budget, health care and baby-friendliness, their research had New York State ranked 48th out of 51. The Top States to have a baby were Vermont, Maine, Connecticut, Minnesota & New Hampshire. New York also ranked near the bottom in annual infant-care costs & child-care centers per capita. The states that ranked worse than New York were Alabama, Louisiana & Mississippi.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer is calling on the USDA to begin the process of issuing a disaster declaration to help Upstate New York farmers who suffer major losses and crop damage from this year’s severe drought.. Schumer is also calling for USDA to work with farmers to document losses and process their claims for USDA disaster assistance programs. Broome County Deputies responded to the report of a crash at Airport Road and CFJ Boulevard in the town of Dickinson Saturday afternoon. 33-year-old John Dirig of Long Eddy is accused of leaving the scene, and a 32-year-old woman who had overdosed on heroin in Dirig’s vehicle. Deputies administered Narcan and she was taken to an area hospital. Dirig was apprehended, he faces charges including criminal possession of a controlled substance, as Deputies confiscated 14 packets of heroin and hypodermic needles in his vehicle. The investigation is continuing, & more charges are possible.
State Police arrested 28-year-old Kayla Hartmann of Utica for DWI, obstructing governmental administration, unlawful possession of marihuana and several other traffic violations, following the report of a 1-car crash on Otsego County Road 10 in the Town of Laurens. Troopers were approached by 21-year-old Shania Russell of Oneonta, as well as Hartmann, both told troopers that Russell was driving when the crash happened and that Hartmann was a passenger, troopers reported that Hartmann was driving while intoxicated and had told her passenger to lie. Hartmann was arraigned in Town of Milford court and then was released without bail required. The investigation is ongoing.

A skunk has tested positive for rabies in the Village of Delhi. The Skunk was sent to the State Rabies Laboratory, The positive test results were received Friday & there was 1 human exposure. Delaware County Public Health is coordinating the Rabies Post Exposure Prophylaxis treatment the adult will be receiving. The next scheduled rabies clinics are at the Sidney Fire Hall on August 10th, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM & the Delhi Fire Station on October 19th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. 33 year old Joshua Whaley of Pitcher was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff's department on 5 active warrants from various courts and various Police agencies. Whaley was wanted for failure to appear in court on original charges of Unlawful Fleeing, Criminal Possession of a controlled substance, and promoting prison contraband. Whaley was also charged with resisting arrest after he tried allegedly tried hiding inside a residence to avoid apprehension. Whaley was remanded to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office without bail until Chenango County Court convenes.
The State DOT announced that work to install temporary traffic signals on State Route 28 between Upper Main Street and Grove Street in the village of Cooperstown will begin today. Work will be performed daily from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Wednesday, August 17th. Motorists are advised to be alert for slow moving traffic and sudden stops.

The Act supports investments in education technology that will equip students with the skills they need to thrive and succeed in the global economy. Locally, the Oxford Academy will receive about $1 Million Dollars for High Tech Security & School connectivity project.
The State DEC seized more than 1,100 pounds of undersized lobsters from Price Chopper in 3 different inspections over the last 4 months. The case was sparked in March when short lobsters were found at 2 Price Chopper stores in Binghamton. The distribution center for Price Chopper in Schenectady, & a routine inspection Tuesday, determined that 820 lobsters, or 15% of the inventory, were under the legal size limit. Price Chopper faces fines of up to $100 for every shellfish involved.
The DCMO BOCES Board selected Perry Dewey as the new District Superintendent, to lead 16 component school districts in Delaware, Chenango, Madison and Otsego Counties. The decision is the result of review and interview sessions conducted over a seven-month period. Dewey will be leaving his position as Superintendent of Madison Central School, where he has served for over 4 years.

21-year-old Pate Balde of the Bronx was arrested in the Town of Davenport Tuesday morning and charged with possessing narcotic drugs with intent to sell following a collaborative investigation by the Delaware County Sheriff's Office, Oneonta City Police Department and State Police. Balde was arrested at the Rock Inn Motel on State Highway 23, Oneonta, and charged with 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Unlawful Possession a Marihuana. A search of the motel room, led to the seizure of 65 bags of heroin, 17 individual “wraps” of crack cocaine, powder cocaine, a small quantity of marihuana and more than $1000 cash. Balde was arraigned & he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility in lieu of $150,000 cash bail pending further court proceedings.
Oneonta Fire Department responded to a fire on Monday at 130 Chestnut Street shortly after 2:00 AM. The fire displaced 4 people, all escaped the blaze, but 2 occupants suffered smoke inhalation. The investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing.
State Police arrested 41-year-old Gary Crosby of Chenango Forks, for 1 count 1st degree Assault, for allegedly stabbing of a 15-year-old male early Tuesday morning in the town of Union. Crosby was arraigned and was remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office investigated a single motorcycle fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred Sunday afternoon on County Road 10A, in the Town of Preston. 38-year-old Steven Carpenter of Guilford, lost control and slid into a guide rail. The passenger on the motorcycle was 30-year-old Katelynn Coville of Guilford, Both died at the scene. The Cause of the crash is still under investigation.
The Delaware County DPW will be closing County Route 4 in the Town of Sidney to through traffic today, starting at 7:00 AM, for the replacement of a culvert. The Closure will be from just south of the village of Sidney Limit, to just north of State Route 8. The road is expected to be re-opened at 4:00 PM.
Governor Cuomo announced the availability of $200 million in enhanced assistance for local governments over the next two years to rehabilitate and replace bridges and culverts statewide. This funding, provided through the Governor's BRIDGE NY initiative, is being administered by the New York State Department of Transportation as part of its $21.1 billion five-year Capital Plan. The text messages prompt recipients to click on a link or call a number, when consumers reply, they are prompted to share personal information like PIN or social security numbers. Officials stated that you should never give out such information to an unsolicited caller or text message & you should forward these messages to 7726 to have your service provider block their number from your phone. The Broome Count Sheriff’s department & State Police arrested 36 year old Misty Lawton and 23 year old Amy Ellerson on charges of conspiracy and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, for allegedly taking a used car from a Town of Union dealer & driving off without consent & returning it hours later, back on July 12th. Deputies also charged Lawton with numerous traffic citations. Both will appear August 13th in the Town of Union Court.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 34 year old William Crandall of Norwich for 1st degree Criminal Contempt and Aggravated Harassment. The charges stem from a domestic dispute last month, Crandall was issued appearance tickets to return to Delhi Town Court today to address the charges.

State Police at Sidney arrested 36-year-old Brian Johns of Franklin, for Criminal Possession of a Control Substance, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. The arrest resulted from a traffic accident investigation on State Route 357 in Franklin where Johns was found possessing 11 packets of heroin in his vehicle. Johns was also accused of operating the vehicle while impaired by drugs and without the permission of the owner. Johns was arraigned in Town of Delhi Court and remanded to the Delaware County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.

The Chenango county Department of public works will be holding their annual household hazardous waste collection day on September 14th, but residents with items to dispose of, need to register quickly, according to spokesperson Pat Pittsley:

The Chenango county sheriff’s department arrested 28 year old Kyle Braman of Binghamton for 1 count each of 2nd degree Rape, Criminal Sexual Act and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The arrest followed an investigation into an incident in the Village of Sherburne in July where Braman allegedly performed sexual acts with a 14-year-old female. Braman was arraigned in the Town of North Norwich court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional facility on $10,000 cash bail until his next court appearance of July 26th.
The State Police Special Investigations Unit arrested 49-year-old Anthony Vaccaro of Windsor, for Grand Larceny and Falsifying Business Records. Vaccaro is accused of stealing, transporting and re-selling stolen fuel to cash paying customers at a discounted rate; he is accused of stealing over $80,000 dollars worth of fuel. Vaccaro was indicted by a Grand Jury and he was arraigned and was remanded to the Tioga County Jail on $5,000 bail or $10,000 bond pending additional court action.
