A proposal to build a taxiway at the Oneonta municipal airport will be addressed by the Oneonta Common Council during a meeting tonight. Federal and state grants have been approved for construction of a partial parallel taxiway. The council also will consider a lease agreement with the Oneonta Little League for use of the Swart Wilcox “Richard Murphy” Field; funding steps for the Wilber Park bridge replacement project; business contracts and adopting a local law setting certain tax abatements for local housing. The meeting will be in Common Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall at 7:00 PM.

This year is the 50th Anniversary of the Oneonta Job Corps Academy; they are holding a variety of events to celebrate this month throughout the region. Spokesperson Lynn Price told WCDO News what prospective students can expect:

Tonight, from 6:30pm to 9:30pm at Damaschke Field, the Oneonta Job Corps Academy students will take on staff in a baseball game, plus refreshments, games, contests and fireworks, as well as more information for the public on the Oneonta Job Corps Academy, the event is free to the public. A $117,000 federal grant will allow the Greater Binghamton Airport to conduct a study on sustainability. Congressman Richard Hanna announced the grant Monday, which will identify ways to reduce environmental impacts, realize economic benefits and improve community relations. The grant will help develop a sustainability policy for the airport to address the problem long-term. The study is expected to establish baseline figures to help the airport set goals.

The Oneonta Job Corps Academy will host a “Community Relations/Industrial Council” Meeting & Student Recognition Ceremony today. The event will run from 3:30pm to 5:30pm at the Oneonta Municipal Airport at 391 Airport Road, where the Oneonta Job Corps Academy and the Oneonta Airport Commission will celebrate the work that the students of the Job Corps put into the Oneonta Municipal Airport.

State police in Oneonta arrested 45-year-old Guy Bentley of Fairview, New Jersey for petty larceny. The investigation determined that on December 31st Bentley had shop lifted $54.03 worth of merchandise from the Oneonta Wal-Mart store, he returned on January 2nd and attempted to steal another $ 31.00 in merchandise. Bentley was issued a ticket returnable to the Town of Oneonta Court on January 14th.
U.S. Senator Charles Schumer today provided details about the state’s role as one of six sites in the nation, selected by the FAA, to test unmanned aircraft. Schumer was at Griffiss Airport in Rome and at Manley Field House in Syracuse to announce the first client to begin drone testing. An alliance of more than 40 public, private and academic organizations in New York and Massachusetts will operate the Rome site.
