A US Appeals Court today affirmed the dismissal of a case that sought to overturn New York State's Reproductive Health Care Act, which protects a woman's right to reproductive freedom. The dismissal of the case will allow women to seek an abortion in New York State, regardless of laws being passed against those rights in other states, or on the federal level.

Former area Congressman and current Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado announced that he will be challenging Governor Kathy Hochul in the governor’s race next year. Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 55 year old Yannel Rivera of Bristol Connecticut for Reckless Endangerment, Obstructing Governmental Administration, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a motor vehicle, in the Town of Bainbridge on May 26th. Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle Rivera was operating in the Town of Bainbridge, he failed to comply and led Deputies on a pursuit, he was eventually apprehended in Walton. Rivera was processed at the Chenango County Sheriff's Office and released on appearance tickets to appear in the Town of Bainbridge Court on a later date.
33 year old James Fulginiti of Oneonta, was arrested by the Otsego County Sheriff's Office for Unlawful Interference with Railroad/Train, Unlawful Propulsion of a Missile at Railroad Trains, Criminal Mischief, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Menacing & Criminal Trespass, following a shots fired complaint on the Norfolk Southern Railway in the Town of Oneonta. On May 28th, Deputies were dispatched to railway near State Highway 7 and Corporate Drive in Oneonta, for the report of a man shooting a firearm at a train. Deputies located Fulginiti, he was taken into custody, he is accused of firing a BB Gun at the train conductor's window, breaking the glass, the conductor was not injured, he subject was transported back to the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office, he was processed & was turned over to Otsego County Corrections for Arraignment.

35 year old Renee Cortese of Grand Gorge pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and was sentenced to 90 days of incarceration in the Delaware County Jail. On January 8, 2023, State Troopers were responding to an unattended death investigation at an apartment in Roxbury, and at the scene, Cortese was found to be in possession of fentanyl.

The Harpursville Central School District announced that a district employee has been arrested, a letter to parents stated that the individual is no longer employed by the Harpursville Central School District and law enforcement has not indicated that he charges involve any activity that occurred on school grounds or involved students. more information is expected to be released shortly.

On April 1st, 2025, the Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop in North Norwich, it was found that the vehicle operator, Eric Manwarren as well as passengers Wendy Hackett and Damien Chernoff were in possession of drugs. All 3 were charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, they were processed & were released on appearance tickets for North Norwich Court at a later date.

24 year old Jose Martinez of Arkville pleaded guilty in Middletown Town Court for Driving a Motor Vehicle While Ability Impaired by Drugs, and was sentenced to a one-year conditional discharge. As part of his sentence, he is also required to attend a Victim Impact Panel, an Impaired Driver Program and his license was revoked for at least six months. If he violates any terms or conditions of his conditional discharge, he is subject to being re-sentenced to 1 year in jail.
State Police responded to the Margaretville Central School District for a report that a student brought a BB gun to school. An investigation determined that on March 27th, an 18-year-old student brought a BB gun on school grounds and it was observed by another student and teacher inside his backpack. The student did not make any threats towards others. The teacher, Jennifer Sobas-Sands failed to report the incident after observing the BB gun, the student was charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Sobas-Sands was charged with Official Misconduct and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The student was arraigned at Delaware County Centralized Arraignment. Sobas-Sands is scheduled to appear at the Middletown Town Court on May 22nd.
The U.S. Supreme Court declined to take up a challenge to New York State gun laws that ban firearms from certain “sensitive" locations and require that handgun owners be of “good moral character.” The decision leaves in place an appeals court ruling that upheld provisions of the law, where they allowed New York to continue enforcing parts of the law that ban firearms from public transportation, hospitals and schools, and require that handgun owners prove “good moral character."
