Broome County Sheriff's Office & area firefighters responded Friday to the report of a car crashing into a house in the Town of Union. Responding deputies found that the driver, an 82-year-old female, was attempting to back out of a residential driveway and mistakenly accelerated forward off the driveway and into the adjacent house, rupturing a natural gas line. NYSEG was alerted and the gas line was turned off, nearby residents were temporarily evacuated, The driver was transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center for minor injuries. No charges were filed.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a domestic dispute, in progress, in the Town of Harpersfield, Deputies arrested 35-year-old Michael Turim of Harpersfield, for Strangulation, Assault, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Criminal Mischief and Unlawful Imprisonment, Turim was turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility where he was held for arraignment.

In Oneida County Court today, 4 more former corrections officers received prison sentences for their involvement in the death of Marcy Correctional Facility inmate Robert Brooks last December. Nicholas Anzalone and Anthony Farina pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were each sentenced to 22 years in prison, while Michael Mashaw and David Walters pleaded guilty to lesser charges in connection with the Brooks killing and they were sentenced to 3 to 9 years in prison.
A State Police Patrol car was struck by another motorist at about 8:10 AM this morning on State Route 17C near Chaumont Drive. Police state that a Toyota Camry driven by an unidentified 69 year old female failed to yield the right of way while making a left turn into a parking lot & collided with the Trooper's vehicle, The Trooper sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital & was treated and released. The operator of the Toyota was also transported to the hospital.

The DCMO BOCES Board of Education reviewed a proposed capital building project plan at a recent meeting on a plan for renovation of the Robert W. Harrold Campus, the Alan Pole Campus in Norwich and the purchase of the former Masonville Elementary School to house programs for students. BOCES District Superintendent Michael Rullo told WCDO News of the main reasons for the projects:

Both the renovations and the purchase of the Masonville School site are subject to voter approval on February 3rd of next year, the BOCES buildings over more than 50 years old, with the most recent renovations approved in 2005. The projects would start in March of 2027 and conclude in 2028.
The City of Oneonta is accepting applications for a firefighter civil service exam to be held on January 10, 2026. The application deadline is December 10, Applications can be submitted in person or by mail to the Oneonta Civil Service Commission at City Hall at 258 Main Street and the starting salary for 2026 hires is $52,000. State Police responded to I-88 in Afton for a crash involving a Department of Transportation vehicle and a pick-up truck. Troopers learned that a crew of 7 DOT workers were completing pothole repairs along the east bound lanes of I-88, an attenuator truck in the right lane warned drivers that there was roadwork ahead and that the right lane was closed, while a second attenuator truck was in the vicinity of the crew members. A Pick-up truck pulling an enclosed trailer with picnic tables crashed into rear of the second attenuator truck, The DOT worker that was operating the attenuator and the 20-year-old operator of the pick-up truck were both transported to Wilson Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Both eastbound lanes were closed during the removal of the vehicles. Troopers were assisted by Afton Fire, Bainbridge Fire, Sidney Ambulance.

Delaware County sheriff's office provided an update regarding the head on collision on State Highway 206 in the Town of Walton Tuesday, where 1 of the vehicles went over an embankment. 3 of the occupants escaped from their vehicles, 1 was trapped. A vehicle operated by 68-year-old Steven Wilson of Irvington, crossed over the double yellow line and collided head on with an SUV operated by 19-year-old Lauren Winans-Houck of Roscoe, her SUV exited the roadway and traveled over the embankment. A passenger of the SUV was transported to Delaware Valley Hospital and was released. Winans-Houck was transported to Wilson Hospital in Binghamton for treatment of injuries and leg fractures, Wilson, and his passenger were air-lifted to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, the passenger was treated for fractures & was released, Wilson remains in critical condition due to multiple fractures and internal injuries. The crash remains under investigation.

The Binghamton Police Department announced the identification of the victim from the stabbing at the Salvation Army on Tuesday as 57 year old Kevin Ray of Endicott. Michael Brutvan was charged with 2nd degree murder for the death of Ray, police responded at about 5:15 PM to a report of a stabbing at the Salvation Army, Ray with stab wounds to his shoulder and neck and succumbed to his injuries at an area hospital..
4 more former Marcy correctional officers appeared in Oneida County Court Wednesday for their alleged involvement in the beating death of Robert Brooks in December. Michael Fisher, Michael Mashaw, Nicholas Gentile, and David Walters appeared to answer to plea deals, Gentile accepted his deal on the charge of attempted tampering of physical evidence, he is accused of cleaning up the area where Brooks was beaten, and failing to report it to authorities.

State Police announced that 61-year-old Michael Crandall from Oxford, succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash between his motorcycle & a school bus Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Chenango County routes 35 & 32 in the town of Oxford. Crandall was taken to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, the school bus had 8 children on board, a 12-year-old child was evaluated at Chenango Memorial Hospital, no other children reported injuries. The unidentified school bus drive & an aid were evaluated at the scene and did not need further treatment, The crash remains under investigation.
Broome County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded Saturday to a burglary complaint at the Big Dipper BBQ 2 restaurant in Conklin, a Review of security footage showed 4 individuals breaking in causing several thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to the door and air conditioning unit of the businesses. Several tubs of ice cream and bottles of soda were taken by the suspects Officers arrested 20 year old Tracy Bryce of Conklin for Criminal Mischief & Burglary, 20 year old Jordan Wilson of for Criminal Mischief and Burglary, 2 juveniles were also charged. Bryce and Wilson were processed and arraigned, the juveniles were processed and arraigned before being released to their families.

Firefighters from Binghamton & surrounding communities responded to a fire at 1 Main Street in Binghamton late last night, 3 firefighters were reportedly injured, and were sent to Wilson Hospital, 1 firefighter, John Gaudet succumbed to his injuries, he had served with the Binghamton Fire Department for 11 years. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
32 year old Michael Vogel of Delhi pleaded guilty to Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in Delaware County Court. In May of last year, Vogel sold fentanyl, in October, the Delaware County Grand Jury returned an indictment alleging Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance. Vogel will be sentenced to 2 years in state prison to be followed by 2 years of post-release supervision, sentencing will be on for April 29, 2025.

The Clean Slate Act went into effect in New York State Saturday, which will automatically seal an individual’s New York State criminal records. The law states that Convictions under New York state law are eligible for sealing, Except for Sex crimes, Sexually violent offenses or class “A” felonies with the exception of drug-related convictions. The law does not apply to federal crimes or convictions in other states. For the record to be sealed, a specific period has to pass, 3 years for a misdemeanor & 8 years for a non”A” felony. State Police and Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a fire alarm and disturbance at an apartment located at 2708 North Street in Endicott Saturday. 46 year old Michael Stephens of Endicott is accused of intentionally starting the fire & for menacing troopers with a knife before retreating back into his apartment. Stephens suffered from smoke inhalation, 1 Trooper climbed a ladder and removed Stephens from the scene, he was taken to Wilson Hospital where he was treated & released, he was then charged with 2nd degree Arson & Menacing a police officer, he was taken to the Broome County Correctional Facility for Arraignment.

New York City officials announced that they have elevated to a drought warning and paused the $2 billion Delaware Aqueduct Repair Project upstate, the reservoirs are expected to be re-opened to allow for more water to reach New York City, meanwhile the Statewide burn ban continues as wildfires continue to burn at more than a dozen locations, due to low water levels & exceedingly dry conditions. State Police were dispatched last Wednesday to an accident involving a UTV in the town of Smithville. An investigation revealed that a UTV was on Waldon Road in the town of Smithville when the operator; 52 year old William Williams of Greene lost control, left the roadway, struck a tree and the UTV came to rest on its side. Williams did not survive, the unidentified 24-year-old passenger was transported to Wilson Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is on-going.

Deputies responded to reports of Domestic Disputes 3 times in May where Kirby violated an order of protection & had subjected the victim to physical contact. Kirby was charged with Aggravated Harassment, Criminal Contempt, Reckless endangerment & on the arrest warrants, he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail or $50,000 secured bond.

71 year old Michael Murray of Sidney, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of possession of child pornography in U.S. District Court last week. Murray admitted that in October 2021, he possessed images and videos of child pornography on two cell phones and possessed images and videos of child pornography in two email accounts he controlled. Murray had a previous conviction in New York related to the production, possession and distribution of child pornography at the time of these federal offenses. Sentencing is scheduled for January 12, 2024, in Federal Court in Albany, he could face a term of 144 months in prison, a fine of up to $250,000 and a term of supervised release of at least 5 years to life, he will have to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.
State Police responded to an incident involving a motorcycle and a riding lawnmower at Hawleyton Road, in the town of Binghamton. 74 year old Danny Shepard of Binghamton was operating a riding lawnmower in the area of the roadway and front yard of his residence, 28 year old Justin Tarbox of Binghamton, was operating a motorcycle on Hawleyton Road, they collided & Shepard was pronounced dead at the scene. Tarbox was transported to Wilson Hospital, The incident remains under investigation.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced 40 year old Quentin Wilson of Binghamton was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being found guilty of burglary, obstructing governmental administration and endangering the welfare of a child in March. Wilson was charged after he knocked in the door of a residence on Julian Street in Binghamton while brandishing a handgun, which he used to strike a victim in the face, he stole property from the residence and fled the scene. Wilson will have to serve five years of post-release supervision after he serves his 25 years behind bars.

The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force and the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office executed a narcotics search warrant at a residence in the Town of Owego. Search warrant targeted 33 year old Bienvenido Aponte of Apalachin, who was charged with 2 Counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & 3 Counts of Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia. Police seized 43.2 Grams of Fentanyl, $4,831 in US Currency, Multiple scales, cutting agents, and packaging materials used for weighing, cutting, and packaging narcotics for sale. According to the USDEA, as little as 2 milligrams of Fentanyl can be fatal, the amount recovered equals 21,000 fatal doses of Fentanyl.

The Broome County County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a single-car motor vehicle accident on I-88 westbound near the Exit 3 on-ramp in the town of Fenton. Officers reported that a Honda sedan traveling westbound on I-88 left the highway, crashing into the Chenango River, at about 11:30 this morning, both occupants were removed from the river by Deputies and transported to Wilson Hospital for their injuries. The unidentified driver suffered serious life threatening injuries, the passenger sustained minor injuries. Traffic was closed for several hours today in the right lane of I-88 westbound for the accident investigation concludes.

A Cortland man charged with DWI after colliding with Broome Sheriff’s Office patrol car in the Town of Lisle Sunday. Additional Sheriff’s deputies responded to the accident, conducted the investigation and interviewed the driver, 26 year4 old Zackary Kohout of Cortland. Kohout was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Following Too Closely, Speed Not Reasonable & Prudent, & Consumption of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle, he was arraigned and released on an appearance ticket for the Town of Lisle Court later this month. The deputy whose patrol car was struck sustained minor injuries and was transported to Wilson Hospital for evaluation. He was subsequently treated and released.
19th District Congressman Marc Molinaro announced that Opportunities for Otsego will receive $4.3 million dollars. The funds will be used to support the Head Start program, which provides early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to children from low-income families.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that Michael Seaman of New Berlin pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to felony Attempted Assault. Seaman admitted that on October 18, 2022, in the Town of Fenton he attempted to cause serious injury to an 18-year-old male by stabbing him in the leg with a knife during a road rage altercation. The victim was hospitalized and required surgery. Seaman will serve 4 years in State prison followed by 5 years post release supervision, he also waived his right to appeal. He will be sentenced on May 24th.

State Police were dispatched Tuesday Afternoon to a 2-vehicle crash on State Highway 12 in the town of Greene. A preliminary investigation revealed that 42 year old Maryann Zupo of Greene was traveling south on State Highway 12 and crossed into the path of another vehicle driven by 22 year old Shelby Rose of Norwich. Zupo was extricated by members of Greene EMS and life saving measures were unsuccessful, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Rose suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Wilson Medical Center for further medical care. The investigation continues.

Broome County Sheriff’s deputies responded Tuesday to a Town of Fenton residence, where they found 18 year old Gavin Marsh with a stab wound to his upper thigh, following a road rage incident on Upper Front Street. The other driver was identified as 50 year old Michael Seaman, who allegedly followed Marsh to his residence & engaged in a fist sight with Marsh & another teenager, before allegedly stabbing Marsh. Marsh was transported to Wilson Hospital for treatment. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office & the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office located Seaman in South New Berlin, he was taken into custody, he was been charged with Felony Assault and was turned over to Broome County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Staff.

State Police responded Friday to State Route 17 west to a crash involving several vehicles. In the 1st crash, vehicles were stopped on State Route 17 due to a construction barrel in the road, a vehicle was unable to stop and struck the rear of a vehicle, causing 2 vehicles to spin, 1 of them hit the guide rail, the other vehicle, struck a different vehicle and pushed it into 1 of the original vehicles. 2 drivers were taken to Wilson Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, 2 other drivers were injured, & were treated at the scene.
Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a 2-car accident on I-86 in the Town of Windsor. During the investigation, 39 year old Michael Morgan of Queens, failed a field sobriety test & was charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs. Morgan was processed and released on tickets returnable to the Town of Windsor Court.

Firefighters from Bainbridge, Guilford, Mount Upton, Masonville, Coventry, Franklin, Trout Creek, Afton and Sidney all responded to a structure fire at the Auto Plus Store at 4 Front Street Monday Night at about 9:00 PM. Investigators are trying to determine how the fire started, the store was closed when the fire broke out, no injuries among fire fighters were reported.

Police stated that 4-year-old Kaylynn Mendez has passed away from injuries sustained, while a passenger in a Dodge driven by 36 year old Michael McDonald of Conklin. McDonald, Mendez & 1 other passenger were taken to Wilson Hospital, 2 others were airlifted to Upstate Medical in Syracuse. The Driver of the 2nd vehicle, 53 year old Christopher Davidson of Owego was evaluated at the the scene & was released, The investigation into the crash is on-going.

The State Assembly released their report regarding their impeachment investigation into former Governor Andrew Cuomo. The legislative investigation found overwhelming evidence that Cuomo engaged in sexual harassment many times and ordered state workers to help produce his book on the COVID-19 pandemic during their normal work hours. The former governor was guaranteed at least $5.2 million in personal profit for the book, the investigation into whether the Governor will have to return that money is ongoing.

Broome County DA Michael Korchak announced that a jury in Broome County Court found Scott Mawhiney guilty Friday for the attempted murder of New York State Trooper Ryan Thorp in Deposit. Mawhiney was also found guilty of and aggravated assault of a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, and 2nd-degree harassment. Trooper Thorp was shot by Mawhiney, when he was responding June 23rd to a domestic dispute in Deposit, Mawhiney faces sentencing at a later date.

In the town of Sidney, Bill Hunt is running unopposed for another seat on the town board. Polls will be open tomorrow from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM state wide.

State Police were dispatched Saturday Afternoon to a 1-vehicle rollover on State Route 17 near exit 84 in the Town of Sanford.  Troopers located a Honda Civic struck the guide rail, crossed the roadway and struck a guide rail on the opposite side of the roadway before leaving the highway & rolling multiple times.  The rear seat passenger of the vehicle, 62 year old Miriam Jimenez of Middletown was deceased, the driver, 23 year old Yanluilly Fernandez of the Bronx and front seat passenger 22 year old Jaynilin Jimenez of the Bronx were transported to Wilson Hospital, the investigation is on-going.
Today is the 8th annual National Forklift Safety Day, Michael Field, president and CEO of The Raymond Corporation in Greene will speak on how operations can use intelligent warehouse solutions to train operators and pedestrians in a warehouse setting, it will be held virtually at 9:00 AM this morning.

State Police & local emergency squads responded Saturday afternoon at about 2:15 PM, to a multiple vehicle crash on State Route 7 near the Meadow Crest Park in the Town of Unadilla.  Police stated that a Chevy driven by Michael Tucker of Sidney, was traveling west bound on State Route 7, a Volkswagen Beatle was facing eastbound, driven by Jeanmarie Doelger of Bainbridge, had stopped to make a turn into a driveway when 3 motorcycles driven by Emma Stebbins of Bainbridge, Kory Bennet of Bainbridge & Ralph Bennet of Mount Upton struck the rear of the Doelger vehicle, Ralph Bennet's Motorcycle struck Tucker's Chevy & Tucker then hit a mail box.   Doelger was transported to AO Fox Hospital Tri- Town campus in Sidney, Stebbins was airlifted to Wilson Hospital, Bennett and Tucker were taken to Fox Hospital, Ralph Bennett was transported to Wilson Hospital.

Broome County District Attorney Michael Korchak announced that 20 year old Caleb Casteline of Johnson City Pleaded Guilty today to 1st degree manslaughter, for the stabbing of Q-Quan Richardson of Binghamton at a party in the town of Union in August.  Casteline is expected to be sentenced to 20 years in prison with 5 years of post-release supervision after pleading to the lesser charge.
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office was notified Monday Night by the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office of a stolen vehicle on I-81 heading for Broome County.   A Broome County patrol located the vehicle on State Route 11 in the Town of Barker clocked at 125 Miles per Hour, deputies deployed tire deflating devices across the road, the vehicle ran over the device, failed to negotiate a curve & hit a house. The driver 19-year-old Franklin Chambers of Buffalo suffered facial injuries & a leg fracture, 3 occupants of the vehicle fled on foot.  A bag near the scene was retrieved, with 2 handguns and counterfeit money.  Deputies located 17-year-old Kiana Tucker nearby & she was taken into custody.   Chambers was taken to Wilson Hospital & will be processed shortly on a number of felonies; Tucker was arraigned for several felonies & was remanded to the custody of the Erie County Youth Services Center.  The investigation is ongoing.

State Police responded to a fatal motorcycle crash Saturday night on I-81 in Cortlandville.  The investigation reveals that 47 Michael Sipe of Johnson City was operating a homemade, unregistered motorcycle when he lost control, struck a guiderail and crashed.  Sipe was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies & DEP Police responded July 7th to a 1 car accident near the intersection of State Highway 206 and Wilson Hollow in the Town of Colchester, the vehicle was not occupied, but Deputies located 33-year old Brian Hartwell of Bainbridge walking on State Highway 206.  Hartwell lost control of his vehicle and struck a highway sign and drainage ditch when he swerved to avoid a deer, he left the scene as he had been driving in violation of his conditional license.  Deputies discovered that Norwich Police Department held an arrest warrant for Hartwell for criminal contempt.  Hartwell was charged with a number of traffic offenses, & for the Norwich charge, he was turned over to the Norwich Police Department.

State Police responded to a crash involving a Susquehanna Valley Central School District school bus on State Highway 11 in the town of Kirkwood.  State Police reported that the school bus was stopped, displaying flashing lights and the stop sign extended out, when 56 year old Michael Patchen of Conklin rear-ended the bus.   27 elementary school students were on the bus, along with bus driver 61 year old Mary Reardon they were not injured, Patchen was transported to Wilson Medical Center with Hand injuries, the students on the school bus were evaluated by a school nurse.

Michael Lagano of Sylvan Beach for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor
Vehicle following a traffic stop on State Highway 10 in the Town of
Walton.  Lagano was additionally issued
tickets for Unlicensed Operator, operating a motor vehicle without stop lamps,
and was released on traffic tickets returnable to Walton Town Court at a later
date.

State Police announced that 11-year-old Jariah Durgala is in critical condition after he was struck by a vehicle on State Route 7 and Frederick Street in the City of Binghamton. The investigation revealed that Durgala was crossing State Route 7, in an active work zone when he was struck by an SUV. Medical personnel, State Police and Binghamton City Police were all on scene within minutes of the accident; he was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City & was air-lifted to Upstate Medical University Hospital in Syracuse. The investigation is ongoing. No tickets have been issued at this time.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies, Walton Village Police, New York State Police, & several local Emergency Squads responded Thursday to a head-on collision, with 5 victims and 1 entrapment, on County Highway 21 near the intersection of Russell Road in the Town of Walton. The Investigation by Sheriff's Deputies determined that 42 year old Jeremy Shaw of Walton was driving a pickup truck when he crossed over the center line and struck a SUV head on driven by 43 year old Michael Franzese of Pearl River. Franzese was transported to Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton with head and facial injuries and was later transferred to UHS Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, 41 year old Diane Franzese, 12 year old Anthony Franzese and 10 year old Angelina Franzese were also transported to Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton, they suffered various injuries and were treated and released. Jeremy Shaw sustained injuries to his head and lower extremities, as well as possible internal injuries, and was airlifted to Albany Medical Center. The cause of this accident remains under investigation.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office investigated a reported assault with a weapon, they arrested 45 year old Philip Cuda was arrested. Deputies reported that the victim sustained injuries from a knife and was transported to Chenango Memorial Hospital then later transported to Wilson. Cuda was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $10,000.00 cash bail.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Investigators arrested 31 year old Michael Fiske of Johnson City, on an Arrest Warrant issued by the Town of Davenport Court. The charges stem from a Criminal Contempt and Aggravated Family Offense case, Fiske was also charged with Aggravated Harassment from an incident in April. Fiske was arraigned at the Town of Davenport Court and was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear at the Davenport Town Court at a later date.

State Police executed a search warrant in the town of Unadilla, they arrested 28 year old Michael Schermerhorn, 32 year old Heather Prince, 40 year old Eric Hoyt & 37 year old Barbara Meyers, all of Unadilla, on a variety of charges, including illegal manufacture of Methamphetamine. State Police seized methamphetamine oil, 2 grams of meth, a sawed off shotgun, a digital scale and components used to make methamphetamine. All 4 were arraigned in the town of Otego Court & were remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 bond pending court action on March 29th.
Broome County Sheriff's department responded Friday to a 4 car accident in the Town of Union. 30 year old Rebecca Crane of Sayre, Pennsylvania hit vehicles waiting at a stop light, she admitted to speeding as her husband 33 year old Gary Crane was in the car & wasn't breathing due to a heroin overdose, he was taken to Wilson Hospital where he recovered. Rebecca Crane was charged with Driving While Intoxicated with child in vehicle, Driving While Ability Impaired-Drugs, Criminal Possession of Controlled Substance, Criminally Possessing a Hypodermic Instrument, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Crane was arraigned & is being held without bail, more charges are expected.
