The State Department of Health has confirmed that the State's childhood vaccination policies remain unchanged despite recent federal revisions to immunization recommendations. The Department confirmed that there will be no changes to vaccine access, insurance coverage or the federal Vaccines for Children program, which provides vaccines at no cost to eligible children. Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced the indictments against 3 people in the case of a disabled child who consumed methamphetamine, where 3 adults were present. Indicted were 70 year old Sam Tessora, 29 year old Eric Ferguson & 39 year old Tanya Carson, all from Masonville for Reckless Endangerment & Endangering the Welfare of an Incompetent or Disabled Child, the child was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse for treatment after he was found unresponsive. The indictment accuses the defendants of acting with depraved indifference to human life which created a grave risk to the child, on March 7th in Masonville, all 3 could face up to 7 years in prison, they face arraignment on the indictment charges shortly.
Governor Hochul announced an agreement with legislative leaders on the State Budget, which includes tax breaks for working class families, reduces the Payroll Mobility Tax for small businesses and fixes the discovery laws to reduce the number of cases being thrown out on technicalities:

28 year old Erin Hubbell of Margaretville pleaded guilty to violating the terms and conditions of her conditional discharge, she was sentenced to the maximum sentence of 364 days in the Delaware County Jail. On March 17, 2024, Erin Hubbell, & 3 other individuals, were arrested after a traffic stop of their vehicle and a search uncovered fentanyl, she pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, as part of her plea bargain she agreed to seek help for drug addiction and refrain from further violations, however, Hubbell was stopped by State Police On January 8th, a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of Cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin & other narcotics, she was arrested & still faces unrelated felony drug charges. The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office filed a request to declare her delinquent on the terms of her conditional discharge, leading to the latest sentence.

State Troopers are out in full force with the St. Patricks's Day celebrations coming up this weekend. The STOP-DWI campaign runs through next Tuesday, with St. Patrick's Day on Monday this year. In 2024, the troopers ran their St. Patrick's Day campaign resulted in over 5,500 tickets, they arrested 132 for DWI infractions and they also investigated 199 crashes during that weekend.

4 people have been arrested after the discovery of multiple illegal items in Binghamton. The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force, along with the Binghamton Police Department Community Response Team and Patrol Division executed a search warrant Tuesday at 35 Baxter Street, Officers seized weapons, $3,540 in suspected drug proceeds, Oxycontin and items used for packaging and weighing narcotics. Arrested were 47 year old Jaime Marte-Viera, 27 year old Juan Genao, 20 year old Sincere Pryor and 32 year old Tyron Howell on a variety of Drug & Weapons Charges, all face court action shortly.

The remains are those of an adult female, approximately 4’9”- 4’11” in height, she was wearing Adidas jogging pants, a pink tank top, a black jacket with a pink zipper, and Carolina boots. Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the launch of an initiative to expand and create child care centers across all SUNY campuses for students and faculty. The initiative includes the distribution of $4.5 million in federal and state funding to support current centers, & a program to train the next generation of child care professionals, SUNY universities receiving funding locally include; SUNY Broome, SUNY Cobleskill, SUNY Cortland, SUNY Delhi, & SUNY Oneonta.

Oneonta Police reported that the investigation into the death on January 27th, of 20-year-old, SUNY Oneonta Student Tyler Lopresti-Castro continues. There remains no indication of a crime being committed and the investigation is being conducted as a suspicious death. Lopresti-Castro left a party in the center city around midnight, cell phone data collected indicates he was on foot in the neighborhood where he was living in an apartment. Preliminary findings indicate alcohol and caffeine were present in Tyler Lopresti-Castro, but his actual blood alcohol concentration was unknown in the hours before his discovery. State Police continue their crackdown on people bringing illegal fireworks into the state; Troopers arrested 2 people Tuesday for Unlawfully Dealing with Fireworks.  A trooper initiated a traffic stop on I-81 in the town of Kirkwood, after he observed a driver commit a traffic violation. An investigation resulted in the discovery of illegal fireworks totaling over $500.  Arrested were 31 year old Xavier Santos of Syracuse and 34 year old Aristides Lopez-Robles of Syracuse, Both men were released on appearance tickets to the town of Kirkwood court on July 15th.
The Sidney Library is now open by appointment only, at 563-1200, the Masonville & Sidney Center Libraries will remain closed until July 7th.

The Village of Unadilla announced that the Village playground will be open from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM and 1:00 PM-5:00 PM. The playground equipment will be sanitized every day between 8-9 AM and 12:00-1:00 PM. This playground equipment will be closed during this time to allow the cleaner to dry.  Also, the Tennis Court is opened on 1 side at this time; they are working to open up both sides shortly.

3 people have been arrested after the discovery of illegal fireworks in their vehicle.  On June 27th, State Police arrested 29 year old Leon Tryon and 25 year old Garett Lavalley, both of Wolcott, NY.  They were each charged with Unlawfully Dealing with Fireworks and Dangerous Fireworks.  A third person was charged with a violation level offense for Possessing a Firework or Dangerous Firework.   A trooper monitoring traffic on I-81 in Kirkwood observed Tyron make a vehicle and traffic infraction. A stop was initiated and an investigation led to the discovery of $900 worth of illegal fireworks.  All 3 were processed and issued appearance tickets to the town of Kirkwood court on July 15th.

program history at the Floyd L. Maines Arena in Binghamton yesterday.  The Hawkeyes Defeated Middle Early College, a
Charter School from Buffalo 71-61 in the title game, Cooperstown’s Jack Lambert
was named tournament MVP after scoring a combined 76 points in 2 games at the
Final 4, John Kennedy was named to the All-Tournament Team for
Cooperstown.  The win came 1 day after a

Oneonta Police & Fire department officials will hold a press conference today, regarding the fatal fire at 5 Walling Avenue Saturday morning that took the life of former Oneonta Firefighter John Heller, while he was helping 5 people escape out of the building. The press conference can be viewed live at the City of Oneonta Facebook page, at 5:00 PM.

Governor Cuomo granted clemency to 29 individuals who have demonstrated substantial evidence of rehabilitation and have avoided additional crime activities. The pardons were in recognition of each individuals’ efforts after serving their terms and to remove the barriers that their criminal records present to their immigration status, which affected 22 of the pardoned individuals, some who were facing possible deportation. The Governor said that in each case, a pardon will make immigration-related relief possible, if not automatic.

Willow Run in Kirkwood announced that they will be expanding & adding staff this spring. The company announced that they received a 1.2 million dollar grant for their expansion, which was awarded as part of the regional economic development awards program. The expansion should lead to 40 more jobs; they currently employ about 450 people at their current site.

Otsego County has funding for a Microenterprise Program to assist small businesses with 5 or fewer employees. The application deadline is January 31st; more information is available through Thomas Development at 753-1433.

The Sidney Dollars for Scholars program, for Graduating Sidney High School Seniors, has had a change in the amount of time the seniors have to participate. Program Spokesperson Tracy Young explains:

State Police CNET and Vestal Police stopped a vehicle on Murray Street in Binghamton for a Traffic violation. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery and seizure of approximately 2 pounds of marijuana, Police executed a search warrant at 64 Oak Street in Binghamton, they seized 103 pounds of marihuana, with a street value of $412,000; plus 60 boxes of concentrated cannabis vapor cartridges; 224 canisters of medical grade flavored marihuana; plus cocaine; $37,000 cash; drug paraphernalia and packaging. Police arrested 22-year-old Naami Islam and 21-year-old Melissa Pincus, both of Binghamton for Criminal Possession of Marihuana & Criminal Possession of Controlled Substance. Both were arraigned in the City of Binghamton Court, they were remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

A stray cat in the town of Kortright has tested positive for the rabies virus. There were no human exposures to the cat. An unvaccinated cat was exposed to the rabies virus by the rabid cat; the cat will be humanely euthanized. This is the third animal that has tested positive for rabies in Delaware County in 2018.

A funeral for John Heller, the former Oneonta firefighter who died rescuing 5 people in the Saturday morning fire at 5 Walling Avenue, will be held this week. Calling hours will be 5:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street in Oneonta. Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Friday at the Foothills Performing Arts Center. His life will be celebrated at the East Meredith Fire Department, immediately following the funeral service.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies and State Police bomb detection canine responded to the Robert W. Harrold BOCES campus Tuesday afternoon, following the discovery of bomb threat, the investigation revealed no evidence of an explosive device. The Delaware County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of a 16-year-old male student from the Unatego school district for Falsely Reporting an Incident, he was arraigned in the Town of Meredith Court and he was released pending future court action.
Governor Cuomo today announced the expansion of mobile addiction treatment and transportation services in New York. More than 20 vehicles have now been purchased by nine providers across the state, with more expected to be purchased in the coming months. More than $1.6 million has been made available for providers to purchase vehicles through this initiative. State Police arrested 39-year-old Kareem Buckley of Hempstead Long Island, after troopers observed a BMW speeding on State Route 17, in the town of Hancock Tuesday. Buckley and his passenger 39 year old Vernon McDaniel of queens did not have valid driving licenses, a vehicle search resulted in the discovery & seizure of 14 pounds of marihuana. Buckley was arrested for Criminal Possession of Marihuana & traffic violations; he was arraigned and was remanded to the Delaware County jail on $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond. McDaniel was arrested for Unlawful possession of Marihuana and was issued a ticket to the town of Hancock court on a later date.

Oneonta police arrested an Andes, man after a traffic stop and a search of his car led to the discovery of heroin and oxycodone pills. 21-year-old Austin Rose was stopped by Police on Center Street, Police seized 12.5 grams of powdered heroin, oxycodone pills; and $3,679 in cash. Rose was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, and was being held by the Oneonta Police Department pending arraignment in the City of Oneonta Court. 2 teenagers are accused of shooting an 11 year old in Johnson City Tuesday night. Police reported that the 17 and 16-year-old boys are charged with felony assault, the 16 year old was also charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon. The 11 year old victim was treated at Upstate University Medical Center in Syracuse and later released, the injuries were not life threatening.

State Police arrested 3 people for manufacture and possession of methamphetamine after a search of a Johnson City residence lead to the discovery of a meth lab. Police arrested 22 year old Joshua Diaz 20 year old Desiree Buckley & 16 year old Stanley Conklin, all from Johnson City, with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance; Unlawful Manufacture of Methamphetamines, and other charges related to the possession and use of a controlled substance. All three subjects arraigned in the Village of Johnson City Court and remanded to the Broome County Jail.
Otsego County will host four public forums between November and February where farmers can speak directly to the Otsego County Farmland Protection Plan Committee regarding the 2014 update to the Otsego County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan. O’Connor Hospital in Delhi and Tri-Town Regional Hospital in Sidney are now using electronic medical records instead of paper patient charts.  The hospitals are now connected electronically with Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown; the end result will demonstrate improvements in care coordination, efficiency in health care delivery, medication safety. All information for each patient is securely contained in one consolidated electronic record, making that information available no matter where the patient is seen for follow-up care within the Bassett Healthcare Network.
The Cooperstown Art Association will be hosting “An Artistic Discovery,” High School Art Competition for Otsego County High School Students.  The competition runs from March 8th through March 29th, 6 students will be awarded ribbons and a digital image of their artwork will then be submitted to Congressman Chris Gibson’s office for final selection in the next phase of competition, 1 student’s work will go on to be displayed in the US Capitol along with 49 other high-school artists’ work from across the country.  More information is available at 547-9777.

16 nonprofit organizations received grants totaling $225,100 from the Community Foundation for South Central New York through the Foundation’s annual special grants process. The grants will be used for a variety of capital projects, operations and programs at the organizations, to replace funding lost from FEMA for food pantries in Chenango, Delaware and Otsego Counties and for The Southern Tier Coalition for the Homeless “No-Freeze” program in Broome, Chenango and Otsego Counties.   Some of the Organizations receiving grants include the local Boy & Girl Scout councils, the Discovery Center of the Southern Tier, Mom’s House, & the United Way of Broome, Chenango, Delaware and Otsego Counties.
