The Deposit Village Board has decided to discontinue their contract with the Broome County Sheriff's Office to have a dedicate law enforcement presence in Deposit. The move comes about 6 years after the dissolution of the Deposit Police Department. Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar released a statement saying the\at the decision will make emergency response times in the Village unpredictable, they will respond to emergencies along with the New York State Police going forward.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked at a residence in the Town of Sanford Tuesday. Deputies located the suspicious vehicle and performed a traffic stop. The driver, 29 year old Philip Briggs of Deposit told deputies that he had picked up the passenger, 37 year old Emily Cecere of Binghamton, who claimed to have been staying at the residence, The owner confirmed that no one was authorized to stay there. Briggs was found to have a burglary tool in his possession and Cecere was found to be in possession of a credit card belonging to a deceased individual who lived at the residence. Briggs was charged with Burglary, Possession of Burglar Tools and Conspiracy, Cecere was charged with Burglary and Conspiracy, they will face court action shortly.

State Troopers initiated a traffic stop Sunday on a vehicle for moving unsafely from its lane. Troopers observed a pill container in the vehicle driven by 43 year old Adam Morley of Deposit, the contents was later identified as oxycodone. Troopers also discovered methamphetamine and a pump action shotgun that had been reported stolen in South Carolina. Morley was charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and the passenger, 27 year old Taylor Fineout of Hancock, was found in possession of a 30-round illegal high-capacity ammunition magazine, as well as methamphetamine, he was charged with Unlawful Possession of an Ammunition Feeding Device, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Both individuals were processed and were released on appearance tickets for Deposit Town Court on May 4.

Deposit & Windsor Firefighters responded to a basement fire in on 2nd Street in Deposit shortly before 7:00 PM Tuesday Night. Deposit Fire crews found the fire in the basement of a 2 story home, no injuries were reported, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Gilbertville Mount Upton Superintendent Annette Hammond announced that she will retire following the completion of her 10th year as superintendent and 16th overall at GMU. Hammond became GMU’s middle/high school principal in August 2009, and was named superintendent in August 2015. The District will begin conducting a search for a new Superintendent shortly.

State Police responded yesterday afternoon to at about 3:50 pm to a 3-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Highway 7 and County Highway 9 in the town of Oneonta. A preliminary investigation determined that a BMW was traveling on State Highway 7 when it struck a Toyota from behind while the Toyota was waiting to turn left onto County Highway 9, the Toyota was pushed into the path of a Chevrolet SUV and they collided head-on. The operator of the BMW, a 76-year-old male was pronounced deceased on scene, it is unknown at this time whether he died as a result of the collision or if he suffered a medical event. The operator of the Toyota, a 24-year-old male was transported to A.O Fox Hospital, The operator of the Chevrolet SUV, a 52-year-old male with 3 children were checked out on scene but not transported. The investigation is on-going.

On Tuesday, the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force attempted to execute a narcotics search warrant at a residence and vehicle in the Town of Sanford. 39 year old Scott Lord of Deposit, fled the scene in a vehicle, leading law enforcement on a lengthy pursuit into Pennsylvania. As deputies and Pennsylvania State Police responded to seize the vehicle, Lord was found to still be in the vehicle and he fled the parking lot, striking a Broome County patrol car and another vehicle, Vehicle tire deflation devices were successfully deployed and Lord crashed into a creek. Lord was arrested for Attempted Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Reckless Endangerment, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia, The Wayne County District Attorney has also announced several felony charges.

41 year old James Fuller of Fulton, pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court to Attempted Burglary and was sentenced to 1.5 to 3 years in state prison. Fuller unlawfully entered a barn located on State Highway 10 in the Town of Harpersfield, with the intent to commit a crime, he was also charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, as a result of being found in possession of a bicycle. Fuller was also required to provide a sample of his DNA for inclusion in the State’s DNA Data Bank and to pay fines and surcharges. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the Delaware County Sheriff to begin serving his sentence.

State Police & the Delaware County District Attorney’s office announced that a Delaware County Grand Jury has indicted 27 year old James Christ Jr. of Deposit for 2nd degree Murder, among other charges in connection with the death of a 3 year old child. The child’s mother, Marielys Ramos of Unadilla has been indicted on Reckless Endangerment and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, both are currently at the Delaware County Correctional Facility, pending arraignment. State Police arrested Christ in May, after they were dispatched to Fair Street in Deposit for the report of an unresponsive child, it was determined that Christ recklessly caused the death of the child.

State Police responded Saturday Afternoon to a report of a single car crash with entrapment in the town of Franklin. 74 year old Gjeto Vulaj of Delhi was traveling south on County Highway 16 in a 2005 Jeep Wrangler, he went off the road into a ditch and his vehicle became engulfed in flames. Vulaj was trapped in the vehicle when a family member who was traveling behind him and another citizen attempted to remove him from the vehicle but they were unsuccessful. Vulaj was ultimately extricated by fire personnel from Franklin and Treadwell Fire Departments. He was transported to A.O Fox Hospital but did not survive. The family member who attempted to free Vulaj suffered smoke inhalation and burns. The investigation is continuing.

The Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court has ordered a New Trial of Scott Mawhiney of Deposit, who was previously convicted for shooting State Trooper Ryan Thorpe in 2021. Mawhiney's attorney argued that excluding a Psychiatrist testimony in the case regarding Mawhiney's anti-anxiety prescription led to an unjust conviction, a new trial date has not yet been announced.

Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 47 year old Russell Ellis of Hancock, was convicted of 3rd degree Assault, for assaulting a woman during an argument in Deposit in July. State Police responded to the incident and took Ellis into custody, he was later remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility. Ellis appeared in Hancock Village Court and pleaded guilty to Assault and was sentenced to time served and a 1-year conditional discharge, the Court also issued an Order of Protection in favor of the victim, he was ordered to pay a fine of $500, a surcharge of $205, a DNA fee of $50.00 and to provide a DNA sample for inclusion in the State DNA database.
Daniel Erickson of Greene pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Wednesday morning to Luring a Child and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Erickson he former middle school principal in the Johnson City School District, He is accused of communicating with a Johnson City High School student in an attempt to entice the student to perform sexual acts and attempting to meet her with the intention of having sexual relations with her. Erickson was arrested on July 7th, he resigned his position as principal.

Pope was charged with 3 counts of Aggravated DWI for allegedly having a Child Less Than 16 Years Old in the vehicle, plus DWI, Operating a Vehicle with a BAC of .08% or higher, 3 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child & Speed Not Reasonable and Prudent The 3 children in pope's vehicle sustained minor injuries in the accident and were treated and released at the scene by EMS, Pope was released on an Appearance ticket and for Town of Morris Court at a later date.

Morris Fire Fighters responded to a blaze at a vacant house at 50 South Broad Street Saturday at around 5:15 pm. Mutual aid was received from fire fighters in West Laurens, South New Berlin, Gilbertsville, Pittsfield, Edmeston, Unadilla and Otego, the cause of the fire is under investigation, no injuries were reported.

Police in Deposit arrested 73 year old Jo Stanton and her son, 49 year old Patrick Stanton after they conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle with incorrect license plates. Police seized brass knuckles, heroin, methamphetamine, hydrocodone, and suboxone. The Stantons were charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell, Patrick Stanton was additionally charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, more charges are anticipated, The investigation is ongoing.

The State Comptroller's Office audited the Afton Central School District, , they found that the Afton Board and District officials did not effectively manage the District’s fund balance, so they levied more taxes than needed to fund operations and were not transparent with taxpayers. The Board annually overestimated appropriations by an average of $1.1 million or 7%. The District incurred $63,561 in unnecessary interest and other associated costs for the issuance of bonds to purchase school buses. The Comptrollers office recommended adopting realistic budgets, Reduce surplus fund balance to comply with the statutory limit to benefit taxpayers. State Police arrested 35 year old Heather Wrench of Coventry, for Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Grand Larceny & Petit Larceny, after a trooper and a Chenango County Deputy were dispatched to a report of a trespass on State Highway 206 in the town of Coventry. Wrench allegedly entered a vehicle and removed items, including a pistol, from a vehicle, she is also accused of trespassing several other area properties. Wrench was arrested and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail without bail.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 32 year old Brent Falkenmeyer of Deposit. On Tuesday afternoon in Unadilla, Deputies & State Police, located and arrested Brent Falkenmeyer who had an active arrest warrant out of the Town of Deposit court for Failure to Register a Change of address as a Sex Offender. Falkenmeyer was arraigned in Town of Deposit Court, he was released on his own recognizance & will return to court at a later date.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli's office recently conducted an audit of the Franklin Central School. The Key Findings were that District officials did not adequately manage network user accounts, periodically compare installed software to an authorized software inventory or develop an IT contingency plan. In addition to finding sensitive information technology control weaknesses, the audit found that 9 of the District’s network user accounts were not needed. District officials generally agreed with the Audit's recommendations and have initiated or indicated they planned to initiate corrective action.
Governor Kathy Hochul signed Alyssa's Law, requiring schools to consider the use of silent panic alarm systems when conducting review and development of their school safety plans. The bill is named after one of the victims of the 2019 mass shooting at the Marjorie Stoneman Douglass High School in Parkland, Florida. The panic alarm systems cost just a few thousand dollars to purchase, and can be implemented in the classroom as a smartphone app.

Local government sales tax collections grew by 15.7% in April compared to the same month in 2021, according to an analysis released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. 18 year old Payton Gendron of Conklin has been charged with 1st degree murder, for the mass shooting Saturday at a Buffalo Tops Supermarket, 10 people were killed, 3 injured, Buffalo Police believe that Gendron drove to Buffalo specifically to shoot & kill black people in the supermarket in a predominantly Black neighborhood, Gendron allegedly posted a white supremacist manifesto online, he had previously received a mental health evaluation after making threats of violence in 2021 at Susquehanna Valley High School. Gendron is being held without bail pending court action on Thursday, more charges are expected as the investigation continues, the FBI is investigating.
State Police at Deposit arrested 21 year old Marcos Parker of Binghamton for Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument, after a trooper initiated a traffic stop on State Route 17E in the town of Deposit after observing a vehicle speeding. The trooper observed that the letters on the license plate were not raised, like they’re supposed to be. An investigation revealed that Parker had a fake license plate made, he was arrested and his vehicle was towed, he is scheduled to appear in the Deposit Town Court on June 13th.

The American Red Cross opened 2 overnight shelters last night, for those without power & heat. 1 location was the Deposit Fire Department on 2nd Street, another was at the Trinity Church at 118 Oak Street in Binghamton.
Delaware County Deputies observed an SUV traveling at 83 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour zone on State Highway 17 in the Town of Colchester. Deputies arrested 36-year-old Christina Daggett of Central Square, her Driver’s License had been previously revoked for operating without insurance. Daggett was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Unlicensed Operator, Speeding & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, she was released on an Appearance Ticket, returnable to the Town of Colchester Court at a later date.

The Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that Scott Mawhiney of Deposit filed an application in State Supreme Court requesting bail while he appeals his recent conviction in Broome County Court. Mawhiney was found guilty for attempted murder of a police officer & was sentenced to 30 years in prison, for shooting State Trooper Ryan Thorp in June of 2021, after Trooper Thorp responded to the report of a domestic dispute. The motion was argued before New York State Supreme Court Judge, who denied Mawhiney’s request. Mawhiney will remain in prison.
Several Fire Departments responded to the report of a fire at the Town of Windsor barn Thursday afternoon. The investigation revealed that the fire started in the bay area of a garage, with fire damage to the entire garage itself with most of the damage occurring in the bay area. Windsor, West Windsor, Harpursville, West Colesville, 5 Mile Point, Deposit fire departments responded, no injuries were reported.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli today announced the audit of the Town of Butternuts. The audit found that the board did not provide adequate oversight of the disbursement process and exceeded its authority under New York State Town Law by authorizing insurance claims and annual contracts to be paid before audit and approval. The board also exceeded its authority by allowing a third-party vendor direct access to the town's bank account that, at times, had more than $500,000 on deposit. In addition, the board allowed debit cards to be used, which resulted in a circumvention of the town's disbursement controls. Auditors found that the142 disbursements totaling $142,200 they reviewed were for proper purposes and adequately supported. However, the board, did not audit and approve 53 of these claims totaling $15,600 before payment as required.
Due to an increased spread of COVID-19, Chenango County is requiring mandatory face masks in all County Buildings and Offices at the start of business on Monday, August 16, 2021. All employees and members of the public (vaccinated and unvaccinated) fall under this requirement. It is also at this time recommended that Chenango County businesses, organizations and schools immediately implement a face mask requirement for their vaccinated and unvaccinated employees, patrons and students.

CDC & Otsego County Department of Health recommends everyone to wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission, to maximize protection from the Delta variant and prevent possibly spreading it to others. This week there have been several cases of individuals having a repeat COVID-19 infection. This occurs when someone is infected with COVID-19 and 90 or more days later tests positive again for COVID-19. These repeat infections are mostly occurring in unvaccinated individuals. This reinforces that immunity from natural infection diminishes after 90 days. It is important if you have had COVID-19 and are not vaccinated please consider getting vaccinated to prevent a reinfection. In Otsego County. there are 82 active cases, 19 new cases reported today, with 5 hospitalized, there have been 2614 total cases in 2021.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fatal motorcycle crash Tuesday night in West Corners at Glendale Drive & Campville Road at 11:44 pm. 42-year-old Jason Krissel of the Town of Union was ejected off of his motorcycle & was pronounced dead, Krissel applied the brakes aggressively at the intersection, after traveling at a high rate of speed. The investigation is continuing.
The State Education Department today released a health and safety guide to help schools and school districts as they plan for the 2021-22 school year. The guide provides strategies, based on information from the Centers for Disease Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics, to position schools and districts to manage the risks for students and staff from COVID-19. State Police at Deposit were dispatched to 2nd Street and Dean Street in the village of Deposit Tuesday evening for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.  The investigation revealed that a 68-year-old male was operating a Chevrolet SUV on Dean Street when he turned on to 2nd Street and struck a 78-year-old woman crossing the street.  The victim was transported to Wilson Hospital where she died from her injuries, the investigation is ongoing.

State Police arrested 26 year old Matthew Haigis of Deposit, Friday for 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Contempt, Criminal Mischief and Criminal Obstruction of Breathing. Troopers responded to a report of a physical dispute at a residence on North Sanford Road in the town of Deposit, Haigis left the scene, the victim reported that Haigis broke into the residence, obstructed the victim’s breathing and broke a cellphone during an altercation, Haigis also violated an order of protection.   A trooper located Haigis operating a vehicle in Deposit, he was taken in custody, & he was transported to Broome County Central Arraignment and Processing.
State Police have charged 26 year old Shane Santiago of Otego for 2 counts of 2nd degree Manslaughter, in connection with a July 15th early morning accident that killed 2 area women.   The investigation revealed that Santiago was driving an SUV, when the vehicle went off of Otsego County Highway 13 in Pittsfield, causing the death of Cheyenn Aubry of Treadwell & Tehya Gonzalez of Bainbridge, Santiago suffered minor injuries, he was arrested Tuesday, he was arraigned virtually and remanded on $2,000 cash bail or $4,000 bond, the investigation into the crash continues.
Governor Cuomo announced that 87,776 COVID-19 tests were reported to New York State Tuesday, a new 1-day record high for tests in a single day. There were 700 new cases confirmed Tuesday, .88% of all those tested.  Currently there are 558 patients hospitalized for COVID 19, the number of ICU patients has dropped to 123, the number of Patients on Ventilators is at 62.  There were 7 deaths reported, bringing the state death toll to 25,218
State Police arrested 45 year old Jeremy Squires of Norwich Saturday for2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Contempt, 3rd degree Assault, Criminal Mischief & Endangering the Welfare of a Child.   Troopers were dispatched to a report of a physical domestic on County Highway 35 in the town of Guilford, Squires had already left the scene, and the victim reported that Squires broke into the home, struck the victim & prevented the victim from calling for help.  The victim was transported to Chenango County Memorial Hospital for treatment.  Troopers located Squires in the city of Norwich, and he was arrested, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.

Broome County Sheriff’s Department reported that a sergeant
on patrol observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Glenwood
Road, a traffic stop was attempted, the operator refused to comply.  A pursuit went onto Airport Road, through
Binghamton, onto State Route 7 & to I-88.
Deputies said that the operator, 25 year old Paul Frost of Johnson City
continued after the vehicle caught fire, Deputies and State Troopers attempted
to contain the vehicle and Frost swerved into the Sergeant's patrol car, lost
control and struck the concrete center barrier near exit 2. Frost was charged
with Criminal Mischief, unlawfully fleeing a police officer, plus 31 other

A Deposit Police Officer confronted and approached Kinzer Wednesday, Kinzer fled on foot into a wooded area.

This year’s induction ceremony will take place during the
Dan Wickham Wrestling Tournament on Saturday with a reception at 5:00 PM in the
Jr/Sr. High School Auditorium, followed by the ceremony at 6:00 pm in the High
School Gym.
