The Chenango County Board of Supervisors invite the Chenango County Public to an Open House tomorrow at the Chenango County Office Building in Norwich, regarding the proposed new County Office building project. Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey Blanchard explains:

The Open House on Tuesday runs from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM at 5 Court Street in Norwich, more information about the project is available at chenangocountyny.gov.

The State DOT advises motorists that the I-88 westbound Exit 20 on-ramp will be closed from Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 31, weather permitting, to accommodate for resurfacing work. The closure is part of an ongoing project to resurface I-88 between the Otsego County line and Exit 20. The project includes the installation of new guide-rail, The interstate will remain open and is currently restricted to one lane of travel in each direction, the ramp must be fully closed during this phase of work and motorists should follow the posted detour.

37 year old Rondell Dowdell of Endicott, pleaded guilty this morning in Broome County Court, to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. On July 17, 2025, Dowdell was stopped in Vestal while operating an electric bicycle in violation State Traffic Laws, a Vestal Police Department canine alerted to the presence of narcotics. A search recovered approximately 20 grams of methamphetamine, a digital scale, packaging material, and cash from suspected drug sales. Dowdell is scheduled for sentencing on October 14th, he faces 3 years in State Prison and 3 Years of post release supervision.

The State’s Division of Consumer Protection is warning members of the military community to be aware of scams targeting active-duty service members and veterans. The FTC reports the number of scams targeting the military community increased by 17%, costing victims $684 million in 2025, with 35,215 fraud reports filed. Service members and their families should never give personal information by phone or by clicking on links in emails to an unknown company or person. The Consumer Assistance Helpline 1-800-697-1220 is available Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, consumer complaints can be filed at Dos.ny.gov/consumerprotection.

Oneonta Fire Department responded to a fire at 10 Luther Street Sunday morning at about 9:00 Am. all occupants escaped without injuries, there were no injuries to firefighters, the cause of the fire is under investigation, the structure was a total loss.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 25 year old Samuel Layton of New Lisbon, for 3 counts of Reckless Endangerment, following an investigation into a shots fired complaint in the Town of Exeter. Layton is accused of firing a semi-automatic rifle in the direction of an occupied residence with a family of 3 inside, resulting in a rifle round impacting through the residence, he was located, arrested, processed, and turned over to Otsego County Corrections pending Centralized Arraignment

State Police arrested 62 year old Dawn Hawley of Delancey for Stalking, after a victim located a tracking device in their vehicle. The victim believed that Hawley had placed the tracker in December 2025 but was unable to find it until last week, Hawley was processed and was issued an appearance ticket to the Hamden Town Court on July 22, 2026.

The State DOT advises motorists that State Route 23 in the Town of Plymouth, just west of Ashcraft Road, has reopened to alternating single-lane traffic, controlled by a temporary signal, as work continues on a culvert replacement project. The roadway had been fully closed for approximately one week, with a signed detour, to allow crews to set the culvert in place. Construction began on June 29, and work is expected to continue for another four to five weeks, weather permitting. Oneonta Firefighters responded this morning to a reported structure fire at 525 Main Street at the Oneonta veterinary Hospital. 3 on-duty firefighters arrived within minutes to find fire rapidly extending up the exterior wall of the building. Crews knocked down the fire, checked for extension, and searched the building to ensure the fire had not spread into the structure, off duty Firefighters were called back to assist.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 35 year old Ross Scribner of Greene for 2nd degree strangulation, from a domestic incident, where he allegedly choked a victim, he was arrested and processed & was taken to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $2,000 cash bail, He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Greene Court at a later date.

State Police responded to a report of a child in distress at a swimming pool at the Binghamton Country Club on Robinson Hill Road. Upon the Troopers’ arrival, bystanders and lifeguards had already initiated lifesaving measures for an unresponsive 11-year-old boy, Troopers assisted in those efforts until the child was transported by ambulance to Wilson Medical Center and subsequently flown to Upstate University Hospital, where the child passed away. The official cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office following further examination. No foul play is suspected at this time.

Otsego County Health Department announced that a Raccoon has tested positive for rabies. The animal was found in Westford, all of the animals that were exposed to the Raccoon are being treated, Officials urge residents to get all pets & farm animals vaccinated, those that are not vaccinated & are exposed will be euthanized. Former Oneida County Corrections Officer Thomas Eck appeared in Oneida County Court on Tuesday, he had pleaded guilty to offering a false instrument for filing, for his role in the beating death of inmate Messiah Nantwi at the Mid State Correctional Facility, Eck was sentenced to 1 year in jail, he was the 15th Corrections officer in Oneida County to be prosected in connection with the death of Nantwi & Robert Brooks. The 2 cases have led to proposed legislation, the Duty to Intervene Act, making it a felony to not intervene while one of your fellow officers is beating an inmate.

Binghamton Police said that 1 man was shot July 4th, at around 9:00 PM, following a report of a large fight breaking out at the intersection of Walnut St. and Gerard Avenue. The unidentified man was shot in the knee & was taken to an area hospital, the suspect remains at large. Anyone with information can call (607) 772-7080.

The Place in Norwich has signed a contract with the Chenango County Department of Social Services to run the Summer Youth Employment Program, a program of New York State's Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. The Place will receive funds to make this program possible for Chenango County youth. The program runs today through July 31st, providing youth ages 14 to 20 years of age, from eligible households with valuable work experience and a paycheck. State Police arrested 25 year old Hunter Lawrence of Auburn, New York, following an investigation into an inappropriate relationship with a minor. The investigation determined that Lawrence engaged in multiple sexual encounters with a victim under the age of 17 over an extended period of time. Lawrence is employed as a Deputy with the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office. There are no allegations that the conduct occurred while he was on duty. Lawrence was charged with 4 counts of Rape, plus Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Lawrence was processed and transported to the Cortland County Jail for arraignment, The investigation remains ongoing.

State Police responded Friday afternoon to a one-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 81 in the town of Lisle. An investigation determined that an SUV operated by 59 year old Paul Veeder of Virginia was north on Interstate 81, he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to leave roadway and overturn. A 19-year-old female from Virginia, was not wearing a seat belt was ejected and became pinned beneath the SUV. She was transported to Wilson Medical Center, where she is being treated for non-life threatening injuries, Veeder and 3 other occupants were also transported to Wilson Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. Veeder was issued traffic citations. The northbound passing lane of Interstate 81 north was closed during the investigation.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 71 year old Debra Sanford of Garrattsville for 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Driving While Intoxicated following an investigation into a motor vehicle accident in the Town of New Lisbon, Sanford is accused of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of narcotics, and possessed 2 different illegal types of controlled substances on her person, she was ordered to appear in New Lisbon Town Court at a later date.

Lull said that the was the 4th year old of the Scholarship, which has handed out about $65,000 so far to graduating seniors.

35 Year old Ciera Washington of the Bronx pleaded guilty in US District Court to conspiracy to commit health care fraud and aggravated identity theft. Washington admitted that from April 2023 through October 2024, she worked with 2 others to steal the personal information of Medicaid beneficiaries and use that information to fraudulently obtain prescription medications from pharmacies throughout New York State & the Northeastern States, which caused a loss of nearly $4 million to the Medicaid program and tens of thousands of dollars to pharmacies. Washington agreed to forfeit over $400,000 in proceeds from her crimes and to consent to an order of restitution for the losses they caused. Washington faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment on the fraud count and a mandatory term of 2 years on the aggravated identity theft count, which must run consecutively, when sentenced in October in Federal Court, She also faces a term of supervised release of up to 3 years.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that more than $10 million in funding was awarded to 20 projects as part of Round 2 of the Municipal Parks and Recreation (MPR) Grant Program to fund the development and improvement of municipal parks and recreation sites statewide for the public to enjoy. Funding for this program was provided by the $4.2 billion Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act. 1 of the awards will go to the City of Norwich, they receive $810,000 to improve safety, accessibility and play opportunities by replacing aging playground equipment, court space and safety surfacing at the park on Hale Street.

State and local law enforcement agencies will increase patrols to crack down on reckless and impaired driving statewide ahead of and during the July 4th holiday weekend. This campaign began Monday & will run through Sunday, July 5. Law enforcement officers across New York will conduct sobriety checkpoints and target dangerous and aggressive driving during what is considered the busiest travel weekend of the summer. To help ease travel during the busy holiday weekend, temporary lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on New York State highways will be suspended from 6 am. Thursday, July 2, through 6 am. Monday, July 6, some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs.

A community-wide conversation about housing insecurity and homelessness will take center stage in Norwich next month, as leaders come together to host A Conference on Housing and Belonging. The event will take place from 9:30 am. to 2 pm. on Friday, July 17 in the Norwich High School Auditorium. The conference is free and open to the public. Registration is recommended but not required. State Police arrested 24 year old Tyler Russell of Endwell, Monday for 6 counts of 2nd degree Manslaughter & 1 count of Arson, he is being held at the Broome County Correctional Facility without bail pending Grand Jury action.

Norwich Police Department executed a search warrant at 41 Cortland Street following an investigation into the sale and distribution of illegal narcotics. 39 year old Shawn Utter of Norwich, & 24 year old Brittany Cox were charged with several Counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Nuisance & Conspiracy, Officers seized cash from suspected drug sales, drug measuring equipment, methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, marijuana, various pills, & weapons, The Village of Sidney Police Department assisted on scene with their drug detecting K9 unit, Utter was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail pending further proceedings. Cox was processed and arraigned in Norwich City Court, where she was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail.

The FBI & the Johnson City Police Department arrested 69 year old Robert Randesi of Johnson City on federal drug & weapons charges after the execution of search warrant at a warehouse style building in Johnson City. Officers located over 20 pounds of suspected methamphetamine, quantities of marijuana, approximately $24,000 in cash, several firearms including AR-15 style rifles, ghost guns, firearm parts and ammunition, plus machinist tools and metal fabricating equipment consistent with tools used to construct or mill firearms & their parts. Randesi is currently in the Broome County Jail, He faces court action for both state and federal charges.

The State DOT announced the start of the $7 million Southside Oneonta Safety and Mobility Improvement Project, which will reduce traffic congestion and enhance pedestrian access along the State Route 23 and State Route 28 corridor. The project includes extended turning lanes, a new sidewalk and an additional pedestrian crosswalk, ADA-compliant curb ramps, plus 2 new bus stops for Oneonta Public Transit users, construction will be continuing through the fall of 2027.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 43 year old Mark Andrews of Schenevus, for DWI, Refusal to take Breath Test, Failure to Keep Right, Driving on slopes and shoulders and Speed not reasonable and prudent following a 1 car property damage motor vehicle accident in the Town of Middlefield. Andrews was processed and released & will appear in Town of Middlefield Court at a later date.

State Police arrested 41 year old Donatello Lazarati of Baldwinsville for Grand Larceny, after an investigation revealed that Lazarati was working with the Assigned Counsel Program in Chenango County, Lazarati submitted duplicate billing to Chenango County for the same legal services and accepted payment. Chenango County sustained a financial loss of approximately $4,700. Lazarati was arrested was arrested, and was turned over to members of Troop C, he was processed & then transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.

38 year old Ronald Boerner of Andes pleaded guilty in the Town of Andes Court to Driving While Impaired by Drugs and was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge, he will be required to attend a Victim Impact Panel, Impaired Driver’s Program and his license will be revoked for at least six months., if he violates any terms or conditions of his conditional discharge, he could be re-sentenced to 1 year in jail. On October 15, 2025, State Police responded to a 2 car accident in Andes, they found that a vehicle was rear-ended when turning into a parking lot, Boerner failed Field Sobriety Tests and was arrested.

Broome County 911 Center received multiple reports of a fire at the Knights Inn, at 2603 East Main Street in Endwell, at about 6:00 AM today, a total of 6 fatalities have been confirmed. Additional information, including the identities of the victims, will be released at a later time, 2 others were taken to Wilson Medical Center. over 70 residents have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. A temporary shelter has been set up at the Vestal United Methodist Church. Endwell Fire Department arrived to find heavy black smoke in the front of the building and flames showing from the rear of the building. The fire spread rapidly, and multiple Fire Departments, ambulance crews and police agencies arrived on scene to assist. The New York State Office of Fire, the Broome County Office of Emergency Services, Broome County Mobile Crisis Response Team is on scene, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

State Police are reminding the public to follow State laws regarding e-bikes, e-scooters, and off-road electric motorcycles. E-bikes & E-scooters, Must be operated by riders 16 years or older, Helmets are required for riders ages 16 and 17, No sidewalk operation is allowed unless locally permitted, Riders must follow all traffic laws and yield to pedestrians, E-scooters limited to roads 30 mph or less. E-dirt bikes & off-highway electric motorcycles are Classified as off-highway motorcycles under State law, they are Not legal on public roads, sidewalks, bike paths, or parks unless fully registered, insured, and street legal, Most recreational models do not meet these requirements, Use is limited to private property with permission Parents or guardians may be subject to a charge of endangering the welfare of a child for non compliance.

State Attorney General Letitia James today released guidance to help New Yorkers understand their health insurance options and avoid scams as major changes to New York's Essential Plan take effect. Beginning July 1, 2026, New Yorkers enrolled in the Essential Plan with household incomes over 200 percent of the federal poverty level will no longer be eligible for that coverage, which translates to approximately 450,000 New Yorkers who are set to lose Essential Plan coverage. New Yorkers who enrolled in health insurance through New York State of Health can get free help renewing or changing coverage from New York State of Health-certified enrollment assistors by visiting nystateofhealth.ny.gov or calling 1-855-355-5777. Anyone who believes they have been misled, scammed, or improperly enrolled in a health insurance plan is encouraged to contact OAG's Health Care Helpline for assistance.

Tomorrow is is Primary Election day around the State. Democrats will vote statewide for the Comptroller candidate between long time incumbent Tom DiNapoli and challengers Drew Warshaw and Raj Goyle. Locally Democrats in the 102nd Assembly District will decide between 3 candidates, Thomas Boomhower, Janet Tweed & Mary Finneran. State Police arrested 56 year old Joel Salinas of Bainbridge following a traffic stop on Chenango County Road 35 last Tuesday. Troopers observed a vehicle committing multiple violations, initiated a traffic stop, Troopers observed a sawed-off shot gun and other illegal weapons, Salinas was driving to sell the shotgun, the investigation resulted in the seizure of several other illegally possessed weapons. Salinas was charged with multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Sale of a Firearm, he was processed & transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.

Sidney Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire with smoke and flames visible Friday night at about 7:00 PM at 826 Circle Drive, heavy smoke was showing from the ridge of the roof. Sidney firefighters launched an aggressive interior and exterior attack and contained the fire to one apartment. Assistance was provided by Masonville, Unadilla, Sidney Center, Oneonta, Guilford & Harpursville fire departments, no injuries were reported, Sidney was back in service at about 8:30PM.

The National Weather Service announced that their survey teams confirmed 2 tornadoes Thursday, an EF-1 just south of Rock Stream in Yates County & an EF-0 near Cortland, other locations were surveyed in Cortland County, though it was determined that strong winds were the cause of damage east of where the tornado lifted.

NYSEG reported a high of over 14,400 customers without power across the western Counties of the state, following strong thunderstorms earlier today, crews have been working to restore power as soon as possible, much of the area was also under a Tornado watch, which expired at 3:00 PM, only about 250 NYSEG customers lost power in the Tri-County region.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office updated the public on the recent Salmonella outbreak at the jail, with 12 hospitalized over hundreds sickened, Broome County Health Department Director Olivia Catalano spoke at this afternoon's press conference:

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar stated that while many have called for the quick dismissal of the Food Care Provider, that process would take months to dismiss and appoint a new provider, he referenced a similar situation several years ago with a food provider at an area nursing home:

There are no current hospitalizations among the inmates, Health care workers are remaining on site to continue to monitor the situation to insure that another outbreak does not occur.

State DOT announced today that starting on June 29th, they will be replacing a culvert, leading to Route 23 west of Ashcraft Road, the project is expected to take about 6 weeks, a detour will lead traffic onto County Road 10, County Road 10A and State Route 12 through Pharsalia, Preston and Norwich. Drivers are encouraged to use caution and give themselves ample time in their commutes.

State Police arrested 27 year old Jon Hertzog of Port Crane for DWI following a 2 vehicle crash on Interstate 88 Tuesday in the town of Chenango. An investigation determined that the vehicles crashed while entering a 1 lane only construction zone, Troopers administered Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which indicated impairment, Hertzog was arrested, his B.A.C was .14%, he was processed and issued appearance tickets to the Chenango Town Court on July 28.

41 year old Alex Scrivani of Claryville pleaded guilty to Criminal Mischief in Delaware County Court On May 11, a deputy was flagged down by multiple individuals reporting a male that was pulling on door handles of multiple residences and going into a local business, the Deputy located Scrivani, who was uncooperative, it was determined that Scrivani went into a building and damaged a screen door, he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending sentencing on June 30th.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 25 year old Tara Tilley of Norwich for DWI, Consumption of Alcohol in Motor Vehicle, and several traffic violations, following a personal injury motor vehicle accident in the Town of Morris. Tilley was Defendant was issued appearance tickets for Town of Morris Court at a later date.

The Norwich Business Improvement District announced today that Public art will be coming to Downtown Norwich. Development Chenango Corporation was awarded $600,000 for a Downtown small project grant fund, $350,000 was spent supporting property owners’ renovations. The remaining funds, along with donations from Friends of the Park and local foundations, have been allocated to public art for Downtown Norwich. Awarded artists will design and install five sculptures and one mural Downtown! The Norwich Public Art Initiative, a committee formed to steward the project, has launched a request for artist qualifications as the first phase of the project, final proposals will be selected by December 1, with anticipated installation of the art work in spring 2027.

State DEC announced several changes to deer hunting regulations to increase harvest of female deer and improve DEC’s ability to manage abundant deer populations. Under the new system, all hunters will receive a first Antlered Deer Tag which can be used during any season, except the September antlerless season. New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets has put new rules in place for bringing domestic animals into the State to stop the spread of the New World Screwworm after cases were found in Texas and New Mexico. The State is restricting the movement of livestock and pets from areas affected or suspected to be affected by the parasite, so far there have been no cases detected in New York. The new order requires extra veterinary testing, proof of good health, and preventative treatment for animals coming from impacted areas.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has elevated a recall of Alfredo sauce distributed in 41 states to its most serious classification after they say a supplier flagged an ingredient for possible Salmonella contamination. The Coffee Connexion Company of Tennessee voluntarily recalled the product on May 6 because it contains a dry milk powder ingredient that was recalled by the supplier due to potential Salmonella contamination. On June 4, the FDA designated the recall as a Class I event, the agency's highest risk category. The product was distributed in multiple states, including New York, The FDA's enforcement report does not indicate whether any illnesses have been reported in connection with the product.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday that over $2 billion in tax relief checks will be sent out to nearly three million New York homeowners as part of the state's School Tax Relief (STAR) program. Hochul says most homeowners who are eligible for STAR credit will receive a check between $350 and $600. Seniors who are eligible will receive a check between $700 and $1,500.

Binghamton Police Department arrested 53 year old Stanley DeGroat of Binghamton and 47 year old Brett White of Binghamton, following a shooting. DeGroat was charged with Attempted murder, Criminal possession of a weapon, Criminal contempt & 4 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, White was charged with 8 counts of criminal possession of a weapon, following an incident Sunday, where DeGroat fired a shot that grazed the victim's hand, he fled the scene on a bicycle, he was located & taken into custody. Search warrants were obtained & executed at 2 locations, Officers found several rifles, shotguns, and 2 illegally possessed handguns, which led to White's arrest. Both face court action shortly, more charges may be forthcoming.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 61 year old Cathleen Mann of Burlington for 11 counts of Criminal Contempt plus Attempted Criminal Contempt . Mann is accused of violating an order of protection multiple times, she was released on an appearance ticket for Town of Maryland Court.

Attorney General Letitia James announced that the Trump administration dismissed its appeal of a court ruling striking down its blockade on wind energy development. In May 2025, James led a coalition of 17 other attorneys general in suing to block a presidential directive suspending all federal approvals for wind energy projects. In December 2025, the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts granted the coalition's motion for summary judgment, declared the directive illegal, and vacated the order.

Masonville Fire Departments responded to a barn fire Thursday at about 3:00 PM on State Route 8. 8 other Fire companies from surrounding communities also responded, Route 8 was closed off to traffic for several hours as crews worked to set up water supplies and utilized tankers from other departments. The barn was a total loss, no injuries were reported.

SUNY Delhi will receive $500,000 in new Direct State Tax Support in the new state Budget, the money will be used to support student-success initiatives, expand student services, maintain affordability and strengthen its impact in the Southern Tier region.

The New York Department of State is warning immigrants around the state of a scam designed to steal money and personal information. Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 40 year old Amy Gonzalez of the town of German for Harassment, Resisting Arrest & Obstructions of Governmental Administration. Deputies responded to an address in the Town of German for a domestic dispute, it was found that Gonzalez subjected the victim to unwanted physical contact. While deputies were taking Gonzalez into custody she resisted arrest. Gonzalez was taken into custody and transported back to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, she became uncooperative again. Gonzalez was released on appearance tickets to appear in the Town of German Court at a later date.

The Sidney Police Department reports that on Saturday officers became aware of multiple incidents of graffiti vandalism affecting both Village property and private property within the Village of Sidney. The graffiti consisted of derogatory phrases directed at President Donald Trump and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Officers apprehended 3 individuals, arrested were 19 year old Mara Van Kingsley of Sidney, 21 year old Harley Riglioni of Unadilla, & 20 year old Saaniah Small of Afton, for 1 count each of Criminal Mischief, Making Graffiti, Conspiracy & Possession of Graffiti Instruments, All 3 defendants were processed by the Sidney Police Department and transported to the Delaware County Court for arraignment, the investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be filed as further information becomes available.

The Governor's Office announced that the administration has reached a tentative contract agreement with the Public Employees Federation for a 5-year term running until April 1, 2031. The agreement is subject to ratification by union membership, which includes approximately 60,000 New York State employees.

The Governor's Office announced that funding is available from the new $10 million New York PLATES capital grant program, to support food banks and other organizations that provide emergency food assistance in building the modern facilities, equipment, and infrastructure needed to serve more families across the state. The application period for grant will open on July 8th and applications must be submitted by August 20th, Awards are expected to be announced no earlier than October 20th.

State Police arrested 26 year old Ryan Gregory of Coram, Wednesday following a neighbor dispute that resulted in a man shot on Houghtaling Hollow Road in the Town of Meredith, Gregory allegedly shot the victim and 2 unoccupied vehicles. A 57-year-old male from Meredith sustained non-life threatening injuries and went to A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta, he was later transported to Albany Medical Center for further treatment. Troopers located Gregory at his local residence where he was in possession of firearms and refused commands to surrender, after several hours, Gregory surrendered and was charged with Attempted Murder, Criminal Use of a Firearm & Additional charges are likely. Gregory was processed then transported to the Delaware County Jail for Arraignment.

A Troy New York man wanted as a suspect in a shooting investigation was apprehended by the Broome County Sheriff’s Strategic Response Group and taken into custody within 5 minutes of his vehicle triggering a license plate reader in the City of Binghamton. On Wednesday, local law enforcement received an Attempt to Locate bulletin from the Watervliet Police Department regarding a possibly armed male suspect and vehicle wanted in relation to a shooting investigation in Watervliet. The vehicle was located in Binghamton, a traffic stop was conducted at a fast food drive through lane the unidentified suspect was taken into custody, members of the Watervliet Police took custody of the suspect and he was returned to answer for his charges.

Attorney General Letitia James today announced that 74 year old Miles Marshall of Hamilton was sentenced to 4 to 12 years in prison for operating a Ponzi scheme that fraudulently stole more than $50 million from 988 investors in Madison County and other nearby counties. Marshall convinced unsuspecting clients to invest millions of dollars into his so-called "Eight Percent Fund," claiming that their funds would be primarily used for real estate investments, Instead, Marshall used the funds to pay investment returns to prior investors, cover the expenses of his other businesses, and to fund shopping trips, vacations, and restaurant visits. Marshall's scheme lasted three decades, and in April, he pleaded guilty as a result of investigation.

Foothills Performing Arts & Civic Center announced today a grant award totaling $324,000 from the New York State Council on the Arts to support the organization’s goal of sound proofing their various event spaces, and to build an addition for more dressing rooms to the Production Center. An Otsego County Grand Jury indicted Sergeant Kristopher Solovitch on Tuesday, he is charged with 1 count of 2nd degree Forgery, and 4 counts of Falsifying Business Records, Solovitch’s arrest stems from the arrest of Otsego County Sheriff’s Deputy Thomas Fellrath in Herkimer County on May 29, for possessing Cocaine while on duty in a county vehicle outside of the County, Fellrath was being investigated for a complaint into fraudulent overtime, which led to Solovitch’s indictment, State Police arrested Solovitch, he was arraigned & released in his own recognizance.

Otsego County Emergency Services reported that Milford Fire Fighters responded to a fire on Lee Drive Monday Night. Multiple fire crews from the surrounding area assisted, 2 people were in the residence, 1 suffered minor injuries, a vehicle was damaged, the Red Cross responded to assist the displaced residents, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

State Police Troop C Traffic Incident Management Unit conducted an Operation Hard Hat enforcement detail on I-81 in near Homer Monday, where highway crews were making pavement and pothole repairs. During the enforcement, Troopers issued a total of 60 citations and made one arrest, 49 year old Rashi Brown of Illinois for Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle and 10 traffic violations. After pleading guilty, sentencing was adjourned until August 25, 2026. The defendant was remanded into federal custody because he still faces charges alleging that he coerced or persuaded a child to produce sexually explicit content. Those charges remain open and are being handled by the United State Attorney’s Office.

New York Attorney General Letitia James joined a coalition of 36 other attorneys general and the U.S. Department of Justice in securing $36.5 million from CVS Pharmacy, for fraudulently over-billing Medicaid for insulin prescriptions. From 2010 to 2020, CVS knowingly dispensed more insulin to customers than they needed while maintaining that they were reporting the correct amount of insulin in their prescriptions. The fraudulent claims allowed the company to rake in millions in extra reimbursements from Medicaid for insulin distribution. CVS will pay more than $25 million to state Medicaid programs across the country, including $2.25 million to New York.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 year old Justin Cole of Bainbridge for Reckless Endangerment and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, following an investigation into a complaint received on May 31, regarding a firearm allegedly being brandished during an altercation in a parking lot adjacent in the Village of Sherburne. A preliminary investigation revealed allegations that a firearm and a knife had been brandished by two separate individuals during the incident. No individuals present at the scene wished to pursue charges, deputies obtained photographs depicting a firearm being brandished in the presence of bystanders, including children. 60 year old Ann Affholder of Binghamton, was sentenced to 5 years in State Prison followed by 5 years of Post-Release Supervision on Assault charges & an additional 1 year in jail for driving impaired, to be served concurrently. Affholder pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to 5 counts of Assault & Operating a Motor Vehicle While Impaired by Drugs. On October 31, 2025, Affholder operated a motor vehicle while impaired by methamphetamines and struck a group of families trick-or-treating, causing multiple injuries, including to a minor.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 36 year old Jon Squires of Norwich for 3 counts of Criminal Contempt Saturday, after Deputies responded to a complaint in Oxford. Squires allegedly violated an order of protection issued by the Chenango County Family Court. Squires was arrested and arraigned, he was released on his own recognizance and is to appear in the Village of Oxford Court on a later date.

Unadilla Fire Department responded Monday afternoon at approximately 3:14 PM, to a 2 vehicle accident involving a school bus. Fire Department units & an ambulance responded to the scene, it was determined that the incident was minor in nature, every student on the bus was evaluated by EMS personnel. no injuries were reported.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 28 year old Makayla Specht of Delhi on charges of unlawfully dealing with a child. Investigators followed up a complaint of an adult providing alcoholic beverages to a child, Specht allegedly provided alcoholic beverages to a minor in the Town of Kortright on December 25th, she was released on an appearance ticket for Town of Kortright Court at a later date.

43 year old Jason Sweeney of Friendsville Pennsylvania was arrested June 3rd, after Officers observed him peel out & speed in Endicott. Sweeney was stopped, he admitted to consuming alcohol and Deputies observed a handgun & a box of ammunition in the vehicle, Sweeney was charged with Felony DWI, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, he was processed and arraigned and was remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility.

Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith & Delaware County Sheriff DuMond will hold a press conference Tuesday at 10:30 to announce the conviction of Brent Trimbell of Hobart, who was the high school coach that was alleged to have sexually abused two female victims while serving in his position and previously raping a third victim. Trimbell had also bee arrested on Federal charges in connection with this investigation.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 48- year-old Noel Wildey of Walton on an arrest warrant issued by the Masonville Town Court. On October 16th, 2024, The Sheriff's Office - Civil Division conducted an eviction in Masonville, During the eviction, Wildey refused to identify himself & gave Officers several false names. Wildey was charged with False Personation, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Obstruction of Governmental Administration. Wildey was processed and released on appearance tickets to reappear at the Masonville Town Court at a later date to answer the aforesaid charges. Wildey later failed to show up as directed, resulting in an arrest warrant being issued by the Masonville Town Court on February 4th, 2025. On June 2nd, 2026, Wildey turned himself into the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office where he was subsequently arraigned and was released on his own recognizance to reappear in the Masonville Town Court at a later date.

23 year old Nicolas Arias of Binghamton was arrested after brandishing a knife and threatening corrections officers during a routine transport in Binghamton. On June 2nd, 2 corrections officers were transporting an an inmate after leaving Supreme Court in Binghamton, the Officers were confronted by an irate male who began berating and threatening them & pulling out a knife Officers were able to leave the scene, Arias was found and arrested the next day, for 2 Counts of Menacing a Peace Officer, Obstructing Governmental Administration, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Arias arraigned and was released on his own recognizance.

40 year old Michael Salamey of Frankfort appeared in Delaware County Court and was sentenced to 2 to 6 years in state prison after he pleaded guilty to 3rd Degree Grand Larceny. Salamey entered into a contract to improve property in the Town of Roxbury, the owner paid him over $360,000 to perform a number of projects, that were not fully completed. Salamey failed to return calls from the owner, he was indicted by the Delaware County Grand Jury for 2 counts of degree Grand Larceny in 2023, after pleading guilty, Salamey remained at large pending sentencing, State Police located Salamey & arrested him on a warrant, and was sentenced last month.

After 11 days, operations at Broome County Correctional Facility have largely returned to normal, Over 120 IV hydration treatments were conducted, 10 individuals were hospitalized, 8 have returned from the hospital, with 2 still receiving treatment. Broome County Health Department showed a positive result for Salmonella in sample of a chicken salad meal served on May 24th, no other meals have tested positive. The Health Department identified multiple violations related to food preparation and storage that could have led to the outbreak. Several of the violations identified are repeat violations that have previously been cited to the food vendor, particularly those involving the cooling of food, The Health Department found no issues with water quality at the Correctional Facility.

Delaware County sheriff's Office arrested 33 year old Logan Coss of Grand Gorge for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, Driving While Intoxicated and Obstructing Firefighter Operations. On May 25th, Deputies responded to assist the Grand Gorge Fire Department and Town of Roxbury Constable at the scene of a vehicle fire, Coss is accused of attempting to obstruct fire fighters and police who were on scene. Coss was released on appearance tickets for Town of Roxbury Court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 46 year old Anthony Alessi of Walton for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Criminal possession of a controlled substance, following a traffic stop at a check point in Town of Colchester,  Alessi is accused of being impaired & was found to possess cocaine, he was processed and was released on appearance tickets for Town of Colchester Court at a later date.

37 year old Emily Cecere of Binghamton pleaded guilty to 3rd Degree Burglary in Delaware County Court Tuesday. On May 9, Troopers were dispatched to 148 2nd Street in Deposit for a report of a stolen vehicle, after a customer reported to the business owner that Cecere was outside of the business entrance, she was no longer employed at that location. Cecere was operating a tow truck from her former employer, Troopers located Cecere and the tow truck, she admitted to taking the tow truck and using the passcode to access the building to get the keys, she was arrested, was indicted by a Delaware County Grand Jury on May 14th, and pleaded guilty, she will be sentenced on July 21st.

State Police have released the name of the operator of a motorcycle involved in a crash early Wednesday as 39 year old Warren Loza of Vestal. The Investigation revealed that Loza collided with an SUV on State route 434 in the town of Owego, the operator told Police that they did not see the motorcycle coming & pulled out of the road into the lane of traffic, the SUV operator was taken to Wilson Hospital, Loza was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation remains on-going.

Sidney Village Officials announced that a water main break occurred on Circle Drive. The water will be shut off to all the apartments on Circle drive until the repairs are completed, which is estimated to be at about 8:00 PM this evening.

Another Sidney Community Clean-Up will be held at Keith Clark Park on Saturday, June 13. Starting time is set for 9:00 at the park pavilion. Volunteers will help variety of jobs throughout the walking trail areas. Some tools will be available, or volunteers may bring their favorite shovels, pruners or other gardening gear. State Police arrested 36 year old Salvatore Magro of Sherburne following an investigation into reports that underage victims were subjected to unwanted sexual contact while working with him. The investigation determined that over the last two years Magro engaged in a pattern of inappropriate sexual contact toward multiple teenage victims, while the victims were employed at Joe and Vinny’s Pizzeria on North Main Street in the village of Sherburne. Magro was taken into custody & was charged with Three counts of Forcible Touching, Four counts of Sexual Misconduct & Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Magro was transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment. The victims were issued Orders of Protection, Investigators believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward, they can call State Police at (607)561-7400.

At approximately 2:03 pm Wednesday, the Otsego County 911 Center received multiple calls reporting a structure fire at Dietz Street Lofts, at 34 Dietz Street in Oneonta, Units arriving on scene found smoke and flames coming from the rear of the building. Mutual aid was requested to the scene, and the fire was quickly extinguished. No serious injuries have been reported. One individual was transported for evaluation for possible smoke inhalation. Some residents have been displaced and the American Red Cross is contacting them to ensure they have access to temporary shelter. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Numerous area Fire Departments also responded.

59 year old Brian Gill of Andes pleaded guilty to a social security fraud, in US District Court in January, Gill admitted that between January 2021 and November 2023, he was collecting social security disability benefits, while he was managing and personally engaging in physical labor for a tree services company he owned and operated. Gill faces a maximum sentence of 5 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000, As part of his plea, Gill agreed to pay restitution to the SSA for the funds he fraudulently collected.

State Police at Troop C responded to the report of a Motorcycle and SUV accident at State 434 in Owego. Troopers & 1st responders attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful. The operator of the motorcycle was pronounced deceased, the driver of the SUV was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City for evaluation and treatment. The investigation remains on-going. The identity of the motorcyclist will be released once notifications are made to next of kin.

Attorney General Letitia James today announced another court victory against the National Rifle Association and former Executive Vice President & CEO Wayne LaPierre, and other top executives, The judgment will require LaPierre to pay $4.3 million back to the organization LaPierre had sought to overturn the 2024 judgment against him filed by James in 2020, the motion was rejected in State Supreme Court. LaPierre was also banned from serving as an officer or director of the NRA or any organization under the NRA's direct control for 10 years.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced a $63.5 million infrastructure project targeting roadways across the Southern Tier and western parts of the state. Locally In Otsego County, a $5.5 million safety initiative will be spent on installing a new sidewalk and drainage system upgrades along State Route 28 in Cooperstown. Transportation officials warn local commuters to prepare for ongoing lane adjustments, reduced speeds, and alternating ramp closures throughout the construction zones.

$6.3 million of the $54 million distributed to SUNY schools are going to Southern Tier universities, SUNY Chancellor John King Jr. announced that $5.8 million of that money will go to Binghamton University while the remaining $500,000 will go toward SUNY Delhi, for student services and research performed by the universities.

New York State DEC announced new and continued investments to address extreme heat, new funding opportunities to create public cooling spaces, and expanded assistance to provide affordable cooling for New Yorkers at home. CHENANGO COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE arrested 30 year old Jordan Robinson of Smyrna for Harassment, Unlawful Imprisonment, Criminal Mischief and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Deputies responded to a residence in Smyrna for a domestic dispute, where Robinson allegedly subjected the victim to unwanted physical contact, damaged property, and attempted to prevent the victim from calling 911 in the presence of a juvenile. Robinson was Arraigned & was released on an appearance ticket, and an order of protection was issued for the victim. Robinson is to appear in the Town of Smyrna Court at a later date.

Attorney General Letitia James announced the sentencing of former New York State Police Trooper Christopher Baldner of Catskill for causing the death of 11-year-old Monica Goods on December 22, 2020. Baldner was found guilty on the charge of Manslaughter & was sentenced to 2 1/2 to 7 1/2 years in prison. On December 22, 2020 Tristin Goods was driving on the New York State Thruway with his wife and two young daughters, Trooper Baldner was on patrol and stopped the Goods family car for speeding. During the stop, Baldner deployed pepper spray into the interior of the car and Mr. Goods sped away, Baldner rammed his police vehicle into the rear of the Goods family's car twice, it skidded into the guard rail, flipped over, and came to rest upside down. The impact ejected Monica Goods from the car, causing her death.

Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 26 year old Jazmine Meade of the Town of Dickinson, after a search warrant execution found narcotics & other drug paraphernalia on Monday. Members of the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force executed a search warrant at the Hillside Inn, as well a vehicle associated with Meade, officers seized 34.9 grams of cocaine, Suboxone strips, Narcotics packaging material, Digital scale, Cutting agent, Meade was charged with 2 Counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, 3 Counts of Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, Child Protective Services was contacted for additional investigation.

The Madison County District Attorney, State Police, University Police at SUNY Morrisville and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office announced that an arrest has been made in connection with a shooting on the SUNY Morrisville campus that left a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the neck back on November 3rd of 2025. The victim was not a student, and was taken to Upstate Medical Hospital for emergency surgery. A Madison County grand jury indicted 19 year old Kido Simon on 6 counts, including attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal use of a firearm. Simon was a student at SUNY Morrisville at the time of the shooting, he is being held at Madison County Jail on bail set at $1,000,000 cash, $1,500,000 bond and $2,000,000 partially unsecured bond. Simon’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 3 at the Madison County Courthouse. 1 other person is wanted in connection with this case who remains at large.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the launch of the 2026 Regional Economic Development Council Initiative, eligible REDCs will compete for funding through the $150 million ACHIEVE competition to support high-impact regional projects to advance regional goals. On Friday, State Police arrested Lieutenant Thomas Fellrath of the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office on multiple charges following an investigation by the State Police & the Otsego County District Attorney’s Office. Fellrath is charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Defrauding the Government, Official Misconduct, Fellrath is accused of possessing 10 grams of cocaine during a traffic stop on the New York State Thruway in Herkimer County, At the time of his arrest, Fellrath was on-duty and driving an unmarked Otsego County Sheriff’s Office vehicle outside of Otsego County.

Delaware County has continued to transition operations of the senior meals program after Delaware Opportunities abruptly ceased operating on May 7th. Delaware County Office for the Aging has supported Senior meals both at congregate meal sites and through home meal deliveries. Congregate meal sites are now fully staffed and operational in Delhi, Hancock, Walton & Grand Gorge, the Margaretville senior meals dining center is open and located back in the Margaretville Methodist Church. The Sidney senior dining center has been temporarily relocated to the Sidney Community Cultural Center at 1 Bridge Street in Sidney, today that site will be operational to serve meals on site and prepare meals for home delivery. The County continues to work with the owners of the Sidney Senior Housing site to permanently relocate senior meals back to the senior nutrition site at 21 Liberty Street Sidney. Governor Hochul's Office announced a 5 year deal has been reached on a contract for the CIVIL SERVICE EMPLOYEE ASSOCIATION, with more than 55,000 New York State Employees. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office and the Broome County Health Department provided an update on the response to the outbreak of Salmonella that hit the Broome County Correctional Facility earlier this week. Over 300 incarcerated individuals reporting gastrointestinal illness since Monday, 10 were hospitalized, Dozens of medical and healthcare workers responded, hundreds of bottles of water were sent, antibiotics were provided, After it was determined that Salmonella was what affected the inmates, On Thursday, Servpro completed a deep cleaning of all kitchen, programming areas, hallways and common areas within the Correctional Facility. All laundry and linens have been thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. Today, regular schedules resumed, visitation hours return on Monday morning.

State Police today announced that they issued a total of 11,104 tickets statewide during the Memorial Day Weekend enforcement campaign. Troopers arrested 211 people for DWI and investigated 693 crashes, with four fatal crashes reported. In Troop C, there were 894 tickets issued, 12 for DWI, 254 for speeding, 195 seat belts violations & 52 violators of the Move Over Law.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 24 year old Alexander Gutierrez of Milford & 28 year old Jordan Gutierrez-Champen for Introducing dangerous contraband in to prison & Conspiracy, following an investigation into suspicious activity in the Otsego County Jail in 2025. Investigators were notified by corrections staff that they had intercepted a letter hidden in a bible which detailed the receipt of contraband by mail to an inmate, they obtained a search warrant for Gutierrez-Champen’s mail, a page had been saturated with a controlled substance later identified as a synthetic cannabis known as “K2.” On Wednesday, deputies located Alexander Gutierrez in the Town of Otego and took him in to custody, he was processed and released. On Thursday deputies responded to the Lakeview Correctional Facility in Chautauqua County and took Jordan Gutierrez-Champen in to custody, he was transported to the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office where he was held for Arraignment.

Plans are going forward to unearth a Time Capsule buried in Unadilla in 1976 and have it opened this July 4th, as part of a celebration for the 250th anniversary of America. The 218th Session of the New York State Police Basic School held their graduation today at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center. 175 Troopers graduated, 23 are training in Troop C, 8 are local from the Troop C area. The new Troopers will be starting May 30 and will be with a Field Training Officer for 10 weeks before getting their official permanent station assignment. State Police arrested 52 year old Jonathan Menhennett of Oneonta after a dispute at a residence in the town of Oneonta. Menhennett allegedly menaced a victim & made threats with 2 knives, the victim sustained injuries but did not wish to be transported to a hospital. Menhennett was charged with 2 counts of Menacing, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, he was processed & was transported to the Otsego County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.

State Police arrested 47 year old Brendan Murphy of Oneonta after he violated an Order of Protection & was charged with Criminal Contempt. Troopers responded to a report of a violation of an Order of Protection in Oneonta, the victim, who is a protected party, was invited inside Murphy's residence, a verbal argument turned physical, the victim left, called 911 & was transported to A.O. Fox Hospital for treatment. Murphy had a previous conviction for Criminal Contempt, elevating his charges to a felony. Murphy was processed & turned over to the Otsego County Jail for Arraignment

UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital will open the doors of its new Broad Street Entrance as well as a new Orthopedics Suite today, A grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting, along with tours of the new spaces, will take place from 12:30 to 3 pm. on Thursday, May 28. The event is free and open to the public.

Testing from the recent stomach illnesses in the Broome County Correctional Facility has confirmed that the cause was Salmonella infection. On Monday, incarcerated individuals began reporting symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and headaches to medical staff, over 300 individuals reported similar symptoms over the next 2 days. Results returned on Wednesday have confirmed that the illness stems from a food-borne bacterial Salmonella infection. Correctional Facility medical and housing staff and officials from the Broome County Department of Health and Broome County Office of Emergency Services, are treating inmates, Salmonella bacteria usually stems from contaminated foods, including beef, poultry, seafood, milk or eggs & unwashed fruits and vegetables. The investigation is continuing.

Former Marcy Correctional Facility sergeant Glen Trombley pleaded guilty to offering a false instrument for filing and reckless endangerment in connection to the death of inmate Robert Brooks, He was sentenced to 2 years in the Oneida County jail.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office and the Broome County Health Department are taking action to treat and prevent the spread of a stomach bug-like illness that health experts believe to be norovirus at the Broome County Correctional Facility. On Monday, several incarcerated individuals reported symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and headaches to medical staff at Correctional Facility. Over the next 24 hours, over 140 incarcerated individuals in multiple housing units were seen by medical staff for similar symptoms. The Norovirus is a highly contagious stomach illness effecting 19 to 21 million people in the United States each year and the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis in the country, The Correctional Facility is also taking additional precautions to limit exposure for staff and other incarcerated individuals within the facility, while performing deep and steady cleaning on any exposed surfaces or areas within the facility.

State Attorney General Letitia James and DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton today awarded more than $1.34 million in grants to support farmers in Delaware and Sullivan Counties. The Agricultural Environmental Innovation Grant Program is funded by the Attorney General's & the DEC's 2023 settlement with FrieslandCampina, for repeated violations of environmental law at its Delhi facility. The grant program will reinvest the settlement funds by providing 25 farms with access to new technologies and practices.

New York State Office for the Aging announced their 100 awardees from across New York State for Older New Yorkers' Day. Local awardees include Brian Danforth of Unadilla, Lois Aylesworth of Columbus, Robert Cuffney of Sherburne, Alice Blackman of Hamden, Lauren Monroe of Bovina Center & Pat and Walter Hogan of Cooperstown.

An investigation at the scene determined that 27 year old Ethan Ray Kennedy of Delhi lost control of his vehicle & went off the roadway and struck an embankment causing the vehicle to roll and land on its roof. Kennedy did not survive.

A raccoon tested positive for rabies in the town of Davenport, it's the 2nd confirmed positive case of rabies in Delaware County this year. 1 dog & 3 people were exposed to the rabid raccoon, the raccoon was sent for testing to the State Department of Health Wadsworth Laboratory. The exposed dog received a booster, the 3 people exposed have begun Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis. State Police arrested 40 year old Michael Sodomora of Richmondville for Reckless Endangerment, following a crash on May 12th. Troopers responded to Lowe’s on State Highway 23 in Oneonta for a report of a vehicle that struck the building. An investigation determined that Sodomora traveled through the Lowe’s parking lot at high rate of speed before striking the entrance of the building, traveling several feet inside and damaging a cash register counter and multiple shelves of merchandise. Sodomora and a 63-year-old female passenger from Pennsylvania were not injured, Sodomora was processed & turned over to the Otsego County Jail for arraignment.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 22 year old Jordan Kratochvil of Laurens, for Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Imprisonment, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Assault & menacing following an investigation into a physical domestic dispute with a firearm in Laurens. Deputies determined that Kratochvil struck the female victim multiple times in the head with an 8 month old child present, he unlawfully locked the victims inside their residence, and threatened to use a loaded semi-automatic rifle against them and others, he surrendered himself to Deputies and he was processed and turned over to Otsego County Corrections pending Arraignment

State Police arrested 30 year Patrick Mott of Homer following an investigation into a child sex abuse case. Mott was charged with Rape, Sexual Abuse, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, for allegedly, having inappropriate sexual contact with a child under the age of 11. Mott was processed and was being held for arraignment.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were notified of a scam where callers are contacting residents and reporting that they are from the New York State Electric & Gas, The scammers state that there is an overdue bill and that if the bill is not immediately paid, the resident's electricity will be shut off. The Sheriff;s Office reported that people should never give personal financial information to cold callers, they should hang up, and contact local law enforcement if they feel that they were scammed.

The Oneonta Town Board has approved a 1 year moratorium to stop new data centers or cryptocurrency mining. The moratorium affects plans by Eco-Yotta from building a data center on County Road 9 in the Town of Oneonta, the plan requires State Approval to be implemented.

The State Department of Transportation reminds Oneonta area residents invites the public to an Open House on Tuesday May 19th to discuss project plans and construction for the Southside Oneonta Safety and Mobility Improvement Project. Construction is expected to start in June and continue through fall of 2027. Otsego County Sheriff's Office responded to a dump truck rollover accident with entrapment Tuesday Morning at the intersection of County Route 11 and Burke Hill Road in the Town of Hartwick. One occupant was extricated and transported to Bassett Medical Center for further evaluation. The driver was extricated using hydraulic rescue tools and was airlifted by LifeNet to Albany Medical Center for treatment.

State Attorney General Letitia James has released footage from the Vestal Police body-worn cameras that her office obtained as part of its ongoing investigation into the death of Eslam Hegazy, who died on February 25th following an encounter with Vestal Police Department. The video shows Police instructing Hegazy to drop his knife repeatedly, a Taser was deployed at Hegazy, who still failed to comply, 2 officers shot at him, Hegazy was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 41 year old Trevor Metterhauser of Pennsylvania was sentenced in a New York Federal Court room to 80 years in prison plus multiple fines for attempted aggravated sexual abuse, aggravated sexual abuse, sexual exploitation of children, and multiple counts of possession of child pornography, involving 2 toddlers, 1 in the Southern Tier & the other in Texas. As part of his guilty plea, Metterhauser admitted he conspired with Brandon Whitford to sexually exploit an a 4-year-old girl in New York & record the abuse, Metterhauser also traveled to Texas where he conspired with Carlos Ruiz to sexually assault a 2-year-old child and to record that abuse. Co-Conspirators Whitford and Ruiz have each pleaded guilty in connection with this case.

State Police announced that 18 year old Dalton Malmstrom of Nichols, who was reported missing Saturday, was found deceased in the Susquehanna River by the State Police Under Water Recovery Team and members of the K9 unit. Troopers were assisted by members of the Nichols Fire Department. Malmstrom was last seen leaving his residence in Nichols, at approximately 7:45 am. on Saturday.

On Sunday morning at 9:14pm the City of Norwich Fire Department was dispatched for the report of a structure fire located at 6 & 6A Griffin Street in the City of Norwich. Firefighters found a working fire, crews entered the apartment building and found fire and smoke conditions within both apartments, they searched for occupants on all floors, they were able to bring the fire under control within an hour of arrival. Norwich Fire Department was assisted by the Sherburne, Oxford, North Norwich & Plymouth Fire Departments, the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and involved improperly discarded ashes from a prior campfire with the remaining ashes placed in a garbage bag on the rear porch of the home. There were no reported injuries to firefighters. 2 occupants of the home were evaluated at the scene by EMS & were released.

New York Attorney General Letitia James called for the passage of the One Fair Price law, which would ban surveillance pricing in New York state. Surveillance pricing is when companies use algorithms to analyze consumers spending habits, and then determine the highest price they will pay for a product. James said that 2 neighbors could buy the same product at the same time but pay different prices, The package includes 2 bills, one for online shopping and one for traditional retail stores. The bills also ban the use of electronic shelf labels in grocery stores and pharmacies.

State Police announced a 35% increase in vehicle and traffic tickets issued during this year’s Operation Hard Hat initiative, from April 20 through April 24th. State Police conducted 12 enforcement details across the state. Troopers were deployed within active work zones, 967 tickets were issued, 401 for speeding, 138 for distracted driving, 160 for violations of New York’s Move Over Law. In Troop c there were 65 tickets issued, 34 of those were for speeding,

A heavy presence of emergency responders and volunteers from both New York and Pennsylvania are searching for 18-year-old Dalton Malmstrom, who was last seen leaving his residence near the Susquehanna River in the town of Nichols, at 7:45 am. Saturday, Family members told Police that he was not acting like himself prior to leaving. Dalton is described as a 5-foot-10 white male with dark hair and was last seen wearing a dark-colored shirt. Anyone who with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to contact the State Police at (607) 561-7400 immediately, a picture is posted at the State Police Facebook page.

Old Route 17 in the Town of Sanford, will be closed to all traffic today and should be reopened to traffic on August 15. The road will be closed for a large culvert replacement, All thru traffic will need to seek alternate routes while the road is closed; A signed detour will be in place.

Delaware County has been contracting with Delaware Opportunities, to provide nutrition services to Delaware County residents 60 years or older and their spouses. Thursday Night, Delaware Opportunities ceased all operations of senior meals effective immediately. The Delaware County Office for the Aging took over today. Delaware County officials will move forward with the plan to take senior meals service in house rather than waiting until 2027. Delaware County Office for the Aging will be operating these services, and no seniors will be left without meals or services they receive.

The Town of Oneonta announced that they have received a $40,000 grant to plan improvements for the West End corridor. Empire State Development awarded the funding to support the Town of Oneonta West End Development Plan, which calls for businesses and homes, more information is available at townofoneonta.org.

27 year old Destiny Grant of Oneonta pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court to Attempted Burglary , she was arrested with several others for breaking into the Oneonta Tractor Supply, she was sentenced to 5 years felony probation supervision

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office announce that a new labor agreement has been reached with Corrections Union, the Otsego County Board of Representatives approved a new contract for the men and women of the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division, making the Sheriff’s Office comparable to surrounding County agencies.

The Otsego County Solid Waste Department will host the 21st Earth Festival event from 10 am. to 3 pm. Saturday, at SUNY Oneonta, in the Chase Auditorium. Events include educational workshops, the repair Café, and activities for children, seed exchange, and a morning bird walk. County Officials will be there promoting recycling and waste diversion practices that the county has developed over the years for residents of the county.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli reported today that despite median household incomes increasing in every New York County from 2019-2024, they did not keep pace with the cost of living when adjusting for the 23.1% inflation during that time period. The analysis shows that the inflation adjusted median household income increased by $1,688, or 2%, from 2019 to 2024, in 23 of the state’s 62 counties, real median household income decreased. Locally, 3 of the 10 largest percentage decreases in real household incomes were found in the Southern Tier Counties.

The Binghamton Police Department & the Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that after the death of 45 year old Peter Bennedum Friday at an area Hospital, the investigation is now being handled as a homicide. The 4 juveniles were previously charged with Attempted Murder in the 2nd degree, the charges have been amended to 2nd degree Murder, they are housed at a juvenile detention facility and are scheduled to appear in Broome County Court at a later date to be arraigned on the new charge. Additionally, the 13-year-old suspect was located and arrested at an address in Whitney Point, and has also been charged with 2nd degree Murder and was also sent to a juvenile detention facility in Syracuse, New York. 33 year old Stephen Pudiak of Port Crane was sentenced in Broome County Court to 14 years in State Prison followed by 13 years of Post-Release Supervision for his conviction on 1st Degree Rape, An additional concurrent sentence of 7 years in State Prison and 10 years of Post-Release Supervision was imposed for his conviction on Sexual Abuse, Pudiak will also have to register as a sex offender. Pudiak was convicted on February 6, after a jury trial on the Rape in the First Degree and Sexual Abuse in the First Degree charges. The convictions stem from an incident in which Pudiak engaged in non-consensual sexual acts upon a physically helpless victim. Pudiak was previously convicted and sentenced in April 2024, on the Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree charge, stemming from a separate incident in which he held a firearm to the victim's head.

State Police arrested 42 year old Dale Chapman of Endicott for multiple drug related offenses after a Trooper observed Chapman conduct a narcotics sale Sunday. Chapman was charged multiple counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, plus Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Sale of Controlled Substance plus several related charges, Police seized cocaine, Crack Cocaine Psychedelic Mushrooms, plus packaging material, scales, & cash from suspected drug sales, Chapman was processed then turned over to the Broome County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 24 year old Alexander Woeppel of Cooperstown, for Criminal Mischief, DWI, reckless Driving and numerous related charges following an investigation into a motor vehicle accident in the Town of Milford. Woeppel was located at the scene and was found to be Intoxicated, he initially crashed into a parked vehicle, then into a private garage, he was released on appearance Tickets for town of Milford court at a later date.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 55 year old Donald Lane for Resisting Arrest, Obstructing Governmental Administration, Bail Jumping as well as on 2 Warrants, Lane was located by a Deputy in Oneonta, he had failed to appear in court for sentencing on previous felony charges, he failed to comply with verbal commands and attempted to flee on foot, he was apprehended & physically resisted arrest. Lane was then turned over to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await arraignment, he was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional facility without bail.

Norwich City Police arrested 21 year old Brayden Pollock of Plymouth along with a Juvenile, in connection to the damage at Angelino Fields on Borden Avenue on May 2nd. Norwich Police determine that both individuals came in separate vehicles & damaged property, amounting to about $2,500 in damages. Both were charged with Criminal Mischief, Pollock was issued an appearance ticket for Norwich City Court, the juvenile was ordered to return to Youth Court at a later date.

State Police arrested 19 year old Derick Danielsen of Laurens after a couple driving in Laurens saw Danielsen follow them in his vehicle into the town of Oneonta, they reported that Danielson was pointing a handgun at their vehicle. The couple drove to the State Police Barracks in Oneonta to report the incident. Troopers located Danielson and his vehicle in Laurens, Troopers seized cocaine, ecstasy, oxycodone pills, Xanax, fentanyl, 150 THC vape cartridges, cash & a number of loaded weapons, he was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, and Menacing, he was processed & then transported to the Otsego County Jail for Arraignment.

48 year old Jason Gray of Bainbridge, pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance for possessing Fentanyl with intent to sell. Gray also pleaded guilty to Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, in Delaware County Court Tuesday. Gray admitted that he was found with Fentanyl during a traffic stop on West Main Street in the Village of Sidney on January 22nd & he was impaired by methamphetamine while driving, Gray will be sentenced to 5 years in state prison and 2 years of post-release supervision & his drivers license will also be revoked.

22 year old Jubilee Klimas of Walton pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with intent to sell. Klimas admitted that she and her co-defendant Joseph Hahn had possessed 8-10 baggies containing methamphetamine when they were arrested in Walton on January 27, following a traffic stop, Hahn had a revoked license, a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of the baggies, plus scales, funnels, packaging material and other paraphernalia, sentencing for Klimas will be on July 1st.
