State Police responded to a report of a child in distress at a swimming pool at the Binghamton Country Club on Robinson Hill Road. Upon the Troopers’ arrival, bystanders and lifeguards had already initiated lifesaving measures for an unresponsive 11-year-old boy, Troopers assisted in those efforts until the child was transported by ambulance to Wilson Medical Center and subsequently flown to Upstate University Hospital, where the child passed away. The official cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office following further examination. No foul play is suspected at this time.

60 year old Robert Scott of Binghamton, was indicted in US District Court on a charge of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and crack cocaine. According to the indictment, on October 30, 2025, Scott possessed with the intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl and 28 grams or more of crack cocaine. Scott was also on federal probation at the time of the offense. The charge filed against Scott carries a minimum sentence of 5 years in prison and a maximum sentence of up to 40 years in prison, a fine of up to $5,000,000, and a period of supervised release of at least 4 years and up to life, if convicted.

Binghamton Police said that 1 man was shot July 4th, at around 9:00 PM, following a report of a large fight breaking out at the intersection of Walnut St. and Gerard Avenue. 24 year old Thomas Murray of Binghamton was arraigned in a federal court room on an indictment charging him with Distribution of Child Pornography and Possession of Child Pornography. Murray was arrested following an investigation by the FBI & State Police, he was returned to state custody where he is being held on similar state charges. Murray allegedly distributed child pornography on a web-based messaging facility on 2 separate occasions & he possessed child pornography on 2 devices, which was uncovered following a search warrant conducted on Murray’s residence in 2025. Murray faces a mandatory minimum term of 5 years in federal prison on the distribution charges, a maximum term of 20 years in federal prison for the distribution and possession offenses, a fine of up to $250,000, and a mandatory term of supervised release of between 5 years and life. Murray would also be required to register as a sex offender if convicted.

49 year old Thomas George of Binghamton, was found guilty following a jury trial in Broome County Court for Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On July 1, 2025, Police conducted a traffic stop in Johnson City, officers located drug paraphernalia and a quantity of methamphetamine, they also discovered that George had a loaded handgun concealed in his waistband, with 10 rounds of ammunition. George is scheduled to be sentenced on August 14th, he faces up to 15 years in State Prison followed by 5 years of post-release supervision.

State Police at Binghamton responded to a 2-vehicle crash involving an SUV and motorcycle on Hunt Hill Road in the town of Fenton Thursday. The preliminary investigation indicates that an SUV was traveling north on Hunt Hill Road when the operator was making a left turn into a driveway, the motorcycle was traveling south when the 2 vehicles collided, the motorcycle became engulfed in flames, The operator of the motorcycle did not survive. The SUV operator did not report any injuries. The roadway was closed during the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing.

State Police arrested 41 year old Donatello Lazarati of Baldwinsville for Bail Jumping and Criminal Contempt, following a violation of a court order issued following his arraignment on a previous Grand Larceny charge. Lazarati was prohibited from leaving the United States and was directed to surrender his passport. Lazarati failed to comply with those conditions, State Police were notified Thursday that Lazarati was attempting to leave the United States and purchased an airline ticket to Qatar at John F. Kennedy International Airport, he was arrested at the airport, brought back to Troop C, and was processed in and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $35,000 cash, $50,000 credit or $250,000 partially secured bond.

State Police arrested 49 year old James Crosby of Binghamton following an investigation into an alleged threatening social media comment directed at New York State Senator Lea Webb. Crosby was charged with Making a Terroristic Threat as a Hate Crime, The investigation determined that Crosby posted a threatening comment on Facebook in response to a WBNG news story featuring Senator Webb at a Juneteenth event. Crosby was transported to the Broome County Jail for centralized arraignment. State Police also determined that Crosby was in possession of firearms despite being prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior felony conviction, Police Investigators recovered a rifle, a large capacity ammunition feeding device, and a firearm suppressor, all of which are prohibited under New York State law. Crosby was additionally charged with four counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd Degree, class “D” felonies.

Binghamton Police Department arrested 53 year old Stanley DeGroat of Binghamton and 47 year old Brett White of Binghamton, following a shooting. DeGroat was charged with Attempted murder, Criminal possession of a weapon, Criminal contempt & 4 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, White was charged with 8 counts of criminal possession of a weapon, following an incident Sunday, where DeGroat fired a shot that grazed the victim's hand, he fled the scene on a bicycle, he was located & taken into custody. Search warrants were obtained & executed at 2 locations, Officers found several rifles, shotguns, and 2 illegally possessed handguns, which led to White's arrest. Both face court action shortly, more charges may be forthcoming.

A Troy New York man wanted as a suspect in a shooting investigation was apprehended by the Broome County Sheriff’s Strategic Response Group and taken into custody within 5 minutes of his vehicle triggering a license plate reader in the City of Binghamton. On Wednesday, local law enforcement received an Attempt to Locate bulletin from the Watervliet Police Department regarding a possibly armed male suspect and vehicle wanted in relation to a shooting investigation in Watervliet. The vehicle was located in Binghamton, a traffic stop was conducted at a fast food drive through lane the unidentified suspect was taken into custody, members of the Watervliet Police took custody of the suspect and he was returned to answer for his charges.

Binghamton Police responded Tuesday to a report of a male stabbed downtown, a 19-year-old male victim had sustained 2 significant stab wounds; one to his back and one in the upper leg, he was transported to a local hospital for treatment & emergency surgery. 2 suspects had fled the scene in a white sedan. 1 suspect was identified as 19 year old Christopher Ricketts of Binghamton, the 2nd suspect & driver of the vehicle in question was identified as 18 year old Jeremiah Coqmard of Johnson City. Both were charged with 1st degree Assault both were arraigned in Binghamton City Court and remanded to the custody of the Broome County Correctional Facility, anyone with information is asked to contact the Binghamton Police Detective Bureau by phone at 607-772-7080.

60 year old Ann Affholder of Binghamton, was sentenced to 5 years in State Prison followed by 5 years of Post-Release Supervision on Assault charges & an additional 1 year in jail for driving impaired, to be served concurrently. Affholder pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to 5 counts of Assault & Operating a Motor Vehicle While Impaired by Drugs. On October 31, 2025, Affholder operated a motor vehicle while impaired by methamphetamines and struck a group of families trick-or-treating, causing multiple injuries, including to a minor.

23 year old Nicolas Arias of Binghamton was arrested after brandishing a knife and threatening corrections officers during a routine transport in Binghamton. On June 2nd, 2 corrections officers were transporting an an inmate after leaving Supreme Court in Binghamton, the Officers were confronted by an irate male who began berating and threatening them & pulling out a knife Officers were able to leave the scene, Arias was found and arrested the next day, for 2 Counts of Menacing a Peace Officer, Obstructing Governmental Administration, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Arias arraigned and was released on his own recognizance.

37 year old Emily Cecere of Binghamton pleaded guilty to 3rd Degree Burglary in Delaware County Court Tuesday. On May 9, Troopers were dispatched to 148 2nd Street in Deposit for a report of a stolen vehicle, after a customer reported to the business owner that Cecere was outside of the business entrance, she was no longer employed at that location. Cecere was operating a tow truck from her former employer, Troopers located Cecere and the tow truck, she admitted to taking the tow truck and using the passcode to access the building to get the keys, she was arrested, was indicted by a Delaware County Grand Jury on May 14th, and pleaded guilty, she will be sentenced on July 21st.

45 year old Dustin Yannuzzi of Binghamton, was found guilty by a Broome County Jury last week for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Felony of Tampering with Physical Evidence and Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia. On October 2, 2024, Yannuzzi drove at a high rate of speed, engaging in conduct to unlawfully flee members of the State Police. Yannuzzi threw packages containing methamphetamine, from the vehicle, which was recovered by the Police. Yannuzzi was subsequently taken into custody at a local hotel, he faces sentencing on August 21st in Broome County Court, As a second felony drug offender, Yannuzzi faces a minimum of 6 years and a maximum of 14 years in State Prison, plus 5 years of Post Release Supervision.

The Binghamton Police Department & the Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that after the death of 45 year old Peter Bennedum Friday at an area Hospital, the investigation is now being handled as a homicide. The 4 juveniles were previously charged with Attempted Murder in the 2nd degree, the charges have been amended to 2nd degree Murder, they are housed at a juvenile detention facility and are scheduled to appear in Broome County Court at a later date to be arraigned on the new charge. Additionally, the 13-year-old suspect was located and arrested at an address in Whitney Point, and has also been charged with 2nd degree Murder and was also sent to a juvenile detention facility in Syracuse, New York. Binghamton Police arrested 4 juveniles in connection with the attack on a homeless man last Monday. The Juveniles were ages 14 & 15 years old and they were charged with Attempted Murder and were being held in a Syracuse detention center, a 13 year is also expected to be charged in connection with the case, Binghamton Police are investigating the case as "social media trend" where groups target homeless or drug-addicted individuals for violent assaults. 45 year old Peter Bennedum died from his injuries at an area hospital Friday, a go fund me page has been set up for his family members, a vigil will be held Tuesday, at 3:00 pm at the intersection of Carroll and Henry Streets in Binghamton, where police found Bennedum beaten & unconscious on the sidewalk last Monday night. The Broome County DA's Office reported that additional charges will be filed against the juveniles following Bennedum's death.

Broome County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 2 people in 2 separate motorcycle pursuits. On April 23, Broome County Sheriff’s Officers observed a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed in Binghamton, Deputies attempted a traffic stop, but the motorcycle operator led them on a chase throughout the area, eventually crashing on Pierce Creek Rd. 56 year old Donald Stocks of Johnson City was charged with Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Obstructing Governmental Administration, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle and 10 additional traffic violations. In the 2nd Incident, on April 24th, Deputies observed a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed in Binghamton, the operator failed to comply and fled into Kirkwood, Patrols terminated the pursuit, but a short time later, they found the bike disabled, 23 year old Osciano Swartz of Binghamton was taken into custody without further incident, he was charged with Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer, Reckless Endangerment, Obstructing Governmental Administration & 16 various traffic violations. Both men face court action shortly.

State Police arrested 46 year old James Lewis of Binghamton after a dispute that resulted in another man sustaining serious injuries. Lewis has been charged with 1st Degree Robbery & Assault, On Friday afternoon, Troopers were dispatched to Endicott for a report of a male who had been struck multiple times by a baseball bat following a dispute. The 48 year old unidentified victim was taken to Wilson Medical Center, where he underwent surgery & was listed in stable condition. An investigation determined that Lewis and the victim had previously traded e-bikes, with the victim expected to pay Lewis, when he failed to provide payment, Lewis struck him multiple times with a baseball bat then left the area with the e-bike. Troopers located Lewis Saturday, was taken into custody without incident, and the e-bike was recovered. Lewis was processed & was turned over to the Broome County Jail for Arraignment.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked at a residence in the Town of Sanford Tuesday. Deputies located the suspicious vehicle and performed a traffic stop. The driver, 29 year old Philip Briggs of Deposit told deputies that he had picked up the passenger, 37 year old Emily Cecere of Binghamton, who claimed to have been staying at the residence, The owner confirmed that no one was authorized to stay there. Briggs was found to have a burglary tool in his possession and Cecere was found to be in possession of a credit card belonging to a deceased individual who lived at the residence. Briggs was charged with Burglary, Possession of Burglar Tools and Conspiracy, Cecere was charged with Burglary and Conspiracy, they will face court action shortly.

State Police arrested 22 year old Kevin Wright of Binghamton and an 18 year old unidentified female from Smithville Flats for theft of a firearm, ammunition and blank checks stolen from a residence in Chenango County. Wright was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Grand Larceny & Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, the female was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 27 counts of Forgery, 5 counts of Possession of Forged Instrument, Grand Larceny and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. In February, Troopers responded to Smithville Flats after fraudulent charges were made using a victim’s account, the victim discovered a check book, a revolver and ammunition were missing, 27 checks were fraudulently signed and transactions were made using a credit card, for just under $14,000. The 2 were found in Binghamton, Wright was wanted on an active arrest warrant, the 18-year-old female possessed 5 forged checks from the victim, the loaded revolver was in the vehicle, both were being held at the Broome County Jail pending court action.

State Police are renewing efforts in the investigation into the homicide of Barry Marquart of Oneonta, a case that has remained unsolved for more than 45 years. Marquart was reported missing on November 9, 1980, by his father, he was 30-years-old and living in Binghamton with a roommate who reported not seeing him for 2 days. Marquart’s vehicle was located at a rest area off Interstate 81 in the town of Dickinson, His body was discovered in the Chenango River, about 500 feet behind the rest area, the autopsy determined the cause of death to be drowning but also indicated he sustained injuries consistent with blunt force trauma to his head and face. State Police are asking the public to look at a composite sketch developed in 1980 of a person of interest, at troopers.ny.gov; The white male would’ve been in his 20’s or 30’s in 1980, 5’ 10” between 140-160 lbs, The individual is not currently a suspect; has never been publicly identified, Anyone with information should call (607)561-7400 and ask to leave a message with Major Crimes.
The FBI announced that they will be rewarding anyone with information that leads to an arrest or conviction for a cold case murder that took place in Binghamton four years ago. 12 year old Aliza Spencer was shot and killed in April of 2022 as she was walking with her father and brother on Bigelow Street, A $50,000 reward for information was previously offered, the FBI have now made an additional offer of $50,000, Anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to Binghamton Police Detectives at 772-7080 or to the FBI at 1-800 Call FBI.
