This past January, Bassett Research Institute launched an investigation surrounding health care access and the use of telemedicine within Bassett Healthcare Network. The project was funded by a $50,000 grant from the National Institute for Health Care Management, after Bassett and other Hospitals around the country had to move to a telemedicine model on the fly as COVID numbers spiked. All people who enter Bassett Healthcare Network’s buildings must wear a properly fitting surgical-grade mask during the entirety of their visit and participate in screening procedures upon entrance, including temperature checks and a brief questionnaire. Bassett Medical Center has started a clinical trial assessing the safety and efficiency of several medications as potential treatments for COVID- 19 among hospitalized patients. The trial was designed by the hospital’s Department of Medicine and the Bassett Research Institute, it will include only patients with laboratory confirmed COVID-19 infection who are hospitalized at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown or A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta. Other qualifying institutions nationwide have been invited to join the trial; up to 4,000 patients can be accepted into the clinical trial, more information is available at clinicaltrials.gov.
