HIGH WATER LEVELS AND CHILLY TEMPERATURES MADE FOR FAST TIMES AT THIS YEAR'S GENERAL CLINTON CANOE REGATTA AS OVER 800 CANOE RACERS PADDLED ON THE SUSQUEHANNA RIVER. PADDLERS FROM 21 U.S. STATES, 4 CANADIAN PROVINCES AND THE COUNTRY OF BELIZE DESCENDED ON BAINBRIDGE TO PARTCIPATE IN THE 63RD RUNNING OF THE EVENT. SINCE 1963, THE GENERAL CLINTON CANOE REGATTA FINISH LINE HAS BEEN CROSSED OVER 16 THOUSAND TIMES WITH 2 THOUSAND 47 PADDLERS DOING THE 70 MILER JUST ONCE.

The 61st General Clinton Canoe Regatta was held this past weekend, over 1500 paddlers. In the Men's NYMCRA Stock class, cousins Seth MacArthur of Staten Island & 1st time paddler Austin Henchey of Otego won the race by over 7 minutes, WCDO's Craig Stevens asked them about this year's Race:

This Year's Regatta saw one of the lowest river levels in the history of the race.
The Delaware County DPW announced road work on county Routes 16 and 21 will take place in the coming weeks. Pavement rehabilitation work began today on county Route 21, from at the Walton village line heading north about 6 1/2 miles, that project will be complete by June 30. The department will begin work on county Route 16 on Monday, June 5, starting in Treadwell and progressing to state Route 10 in Fraser. that project should be completed by June 15. Drivers should expect extended delays during this work. Alternate routes are suggested.

A.M. NEWS Tuesday 5-30-23

The 61st General Clinton Canoe Regatta was held over the Memorial Day Weekend, with over 1500 paddlers ranging in age from 5 to 83, low water & the Hot Sun made things difficult for the 70 mile racers.

The 4 Person Pro Division Winners were New York Paddlers Ed Curley, Ben Schlimmer, Jake Crotser & Patrick Madden, Curley summed up the conditions to WCDO after the race:

The 4 man team beat the 2nd place canoe by about 20 minutes.

In the C1 Pro Race, Canadian Christoph Marchan also won by over 20 minutes with a time of 8:55:17, it was only his 2nd time at the Clinton Regatta, he told WCDO of his strategy:

In the 2 person pro endurance race, Canadian Steve Lajoie won for the 12th time with Michigan paddler Wes Dean, , it was his 1sty pro win, , taking home the $3,000 winning purse, they talked to WCDO's Craig Stevens after the race:

Lajoie & Dean won their race in 8:05:51.

And, the General Clinton welcomed back 28 time pro champion Serge Corbin back for his 32nd Clinton race, the 66 year old Canadian paddled in the mixed division for the 1st time, with his 31 year old partner Ev Chamberland, they spoke to Craig After the race:

The pair finished 1st in the mixed Pro Division & 12th overall, it was Chamberland's 2nd 70 mile finish at the Clinton regatta.

the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 18 year old Austin Reynolds, of Sherburne, for Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the Third Degree and Unlawful Possession of Alcohol; Person Under 21 years of age, after participating in a Stop DWI check point in the Town of Delhi. Reynolds was released with appearance tickets where he will appear in the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.
The Trial of former State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver begins today in a Manhattan federal courtroom. Silver is accused of taking $4 million in bribes and kickbacks disguised as legal fees from 2 separate law firms, while serving as Assembly Speaker. . Questioning of potential jurors is scheduled to begin on Monday. The Trial of Former State Senate Leader Dean Skelos will start later this month.

Sidney High School Senior Austin Dean won the New York state wrestling championship in division 2 at 285 pounds, Saturday night at the Times Union Center in Albany. Dean won his final match 5 to 3 in overtime by scoring a takedown with 17 seconds left. Dead talked with WCDO Sports Director Nate Lull today about how he ended his high school wrestling career:

Some local high school athletes have reached elite status this year, being tabbed with “All State” honors.  Unatego’s Tyler Butler earned first team honors for his play at Safety, second team honors went to Nate McDonald of Sidney, Jake Mazzarella of Bainbridge-Guilford and Mike Beers of Walton.  Third team honors went to Brandon Walters of Sidney; honorable mention went to Sidney’s Austin Dean and UV’s Kody Homann.
