Governor Cuomo today announced that $39.2 million in economic development funding has been approved for 34 projects that are spurring growth and opportunity across the state. The funding, approved by Empire State Development’s Board of Directors, supports projects that are creating 233 new jobs and retaining 1,589 existing New York State jobs – many of which have already been created or retained. This funding will also leverage $338.6 million in private assets and other public funding to support local businesses and projects that are building a strong foundation for future economic growth and job creation.
The Assembly Minority Task Force on Heroin Addiction & Community Response will hold a regional forum today, aimed at identifying problems and weaknesses in current efforts to combat the rampant heroin epidemic. Local Assemblyman Cliff Crouch & other lawmakers will participate from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the SUNY Broome Decker Health Science Center in Room D201. Representatives from rehabilitation and treatment organizations and facilities, law enforcement and criminal justice, and those with firsthand experience dealing with heroin addiction have been invited to attend and provide feedback.

New York was ranked 49th out of 50 states, for its business tax climate by the Tax Foundation, with only New Jersey ranking worse. The group did praise New York & Governor Cuomo for their corporate tax policies, which included reductions in corporate tax rates and an end to the manufacturing tax.   The tax foundation states that New York still has a long way to go, although recent reforms represent an effort toward a simpler & smarter tax code.

State troopers arrested 57-year-old David  Menard  of Bainbridge, for Possession of a Sexual Performance by a Child, and Promote a Sexual Performance by a Child.   Menard was arrested after a search warrant was conducted at his residence at the Maple Manor Apartments in the Village of Bainbridge; he was arraigned in the Town of Bainbridge Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail.
The state AARP outlined a proposal to improve assistance for people who take care of their loved ones at home. The AARP’s proposed “CARE Act” is designed to improve how hospitals help  caregivers learn after-care tasks for loved ones and strengthen community resources that help. New York State has added $5 million in funding for caregiver programs in this year’s budget, but more needs to be done, according to the AARP.  New York ranks 48th in supporting family caregivers.
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is hosting a series of fund raising walks this month.  Locally, 2 walks are scheduled this Saturday, at Keith Clark Park in Sidney another is scheduled for Otsiningo Park in Binghamton, with check in times at 10:00 AM and the walks beginning at 11:00 AM.  More information is available at 1-800-344-4823.

Community members will honor those who died in the American Civic Association shooting five years ago with a special ceremony Saturday at 1:00 PM.  Those in attendance will remember the 13 victims of the ACA shooting, at the downtown memorial on the corner of Clinton and Front streets in Binghamton. The ACA Memorial includes a central granite column with a glass shaft rising from the center that is illuminated at night.  Symbolizing the tragedy's rippling effect in the community are 13 sculptures of illuminated birds in flight.
The state Education Department, and the inBloom student-data project, are undergoing an involuntary uncoupling. The Education Department is acknowledging that it will end controversial plans, to store identifiable student data in a Web-based cloud, created by inBloom, a nonprofit funded by the Gates Foundation. State lawmakers passed legislation that prohibits the department from giving student information to entities that collect and store data for use in a data dashboard or portal. The state is also required to make sure that student data already uploaded is deleted.

Commerce Chenango, The Chenango Foundation, Inc. and the Advisory Committee of Leadership Chenango announced that Robert Wadsworth is the 2013 recipient of the Harry Tecklenburg Leadership Award.  The award will be presented at the Kick-off Dinner for the Leadership Chenango Class of 2014 tonight at the Canasawacta Country Club in Norwich.  Wadsworth served as Chairman and CEO of Preferred Mutual Insurance Company in New Berlin, from 1997 until his retirement in 2008.

New York state lost more personal income from people leaving the state in the 2000s than any other state. The Tax Foundation calculated that New York had a net loss of $45.6 billion in personal income from 2000 to 2010. The foundation tracks moves of people within and between states. States that gained the most income in the last decade are Florida, Arizona and Texas.
The state Senate Finance Committee have scheduled five statewide public hearings on how New York’s tax policies can be changed to reduce the burden on taxpayers and to help businesses create more jobs. Public hearings are scheduled for Albany, Syracuse, Buffalo, Mineola and New York City. The Business Council of New York State; National Federation of Independent Business; Unshackle Upstate; the State Economic Development Council; The Tax Foundation and New York Farm Bureau will participate.
The Village of Bainbridge Board of Trustees will hold a public hearing tonight at 6:30 in the Village Clerk’s Office, 33 West Main St., Bainbridge. The purpose of the public hearing will be to receive comments, concerning the submission of an application, to the State Office of Community Renewal, for funding under the federal Small Cities Community Development Block Grant Program for 2013. The public is welcome.
The Bainbridge-Guilford School Board will hold a special meeting on Thursday, August 22nd at 6:30pm in the district conference room. They will move into executive session to discuss several personnel items and they may convene in open session to approve the items.

A local broadband expansion project will receive state funds through the Connect NY Broadband Grant Program.  The Otsego County Wireless Network project will get $558,940 to bring wireless broadband to the county’s 24 towns, 9 villages and the city of Oneonta.  The connection will serve approximately 28,000 households, 4,500 businesses and 300 community anchor institution locations.
The Chenango Memorial Hospital Foundation raised over $132,000 during their recent annual campaign, the fundraising campaign along with planned giving and the annual golf tournament; the Foundation raised a total of $185,360. Last year's gift help renovate the interior of the old Medical Arts Building, Previous efforts helped to modernizing the in-patient and maternity units, purchased equipment for the Operating room and the Heart Center and purchased the vehicle to transport nursing home residents.  More information about the foundation is available at uhs.net.
