State Police responded late last night to a residence on Houck Road in the town of Masonville for a reported domestic dispute. 32 year old Drew Garnier of Masonville, was charged with 2nd degree Murder and 2 counts of attempted Murder. Garnier allegedly stabbed his pregnant wife, 29 year old Samantha Garnier & their 2 children. Troopers and Sheriff’s Deputies rendered aid to Samantha prior to EMT’s arrival, she was airlifted to Wilson Medical Center where she later succumbed to her injuries. 1 child was taken to Wilson Medical Center but later transferred to Upstate Medical Center. A second child was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center. Both children are expected to survive. Garnier was arrested on scene and taken to A.O Fox Hospital and upon release, he was processed at Troop C in Sidney & was transported to the Delaware Correctional Facility where he was remanded without bail.

State Police responded late Tuesday Night & early Wednesday Morning to 2 multiple vehicle crashes on I-81 in the towns of Lisle & then Marathon. The 1st accident occurred when 28 year old Singh Simran of Calgary, Alberta went off the roadway into the grassy median & attempted to bring the tractor trailer back into the roadway but overturned, blocking both lanes, 19 year old Danial Kirmani struck the cab with his car, 2nd tractor trailer operated by 67 year old Mykola Khudyk of Quebec collided with the trailer portion of the first tractor trailer, Kirmani was transported to Wilson Hospital for minor injuries. in the 2nd accident, in the town of Marathon, 31 year old Nicholas Espino of Bronx, failed to observe another tractor trailer slowing down, driven by 34 year old Gregory Wilson of Mexicao New York, & rear ended it, No injuries were reported. The portion of I-81 from Marathon to Lisle was closed for several hours due to the dense fog, clean up & the investigation of both crashes, The highway was reopened at 8:30 Wednesday Morning.

Troopers were dispatched to the report of children locked inside a hot vehicle and screaming at the Oneonta Walmart parking lot on a 99 degree day. The children were exhibiting signs of distress from the heat, Good Samaritans gave the children water, they were removed from the car and were taken to Fox Hospital & 39 year old Kurtis Carpel of Mount Upton, NY was charged with 2 counts of Reckless Endangerment and 3 counts of Aggravated Driving While Impaired with Child as Passenger after an investigation revealed that he was impaired. Carpel was taken to Otsego County Jail for Centralized Processing and Arraignment.

State Police responded Saturday Afternoon to a report of a single car crash with entrapment in the town of Franklin. 74 year old Gjeto Vulaj of Delhi was traveling south on County Highway 16 in a 2005 Jeep Wrangler, he went off the road into a ditch and his vehicle became engulfed in flames. Vulaj was trapped in the vehicle when a family member who was traveling behind him and another citizen attempted to remove him from the vehicle but they were unsuccessful. Vulaj was ultimately extricated by fire personnel from Franklin and Treadwell Fire Departments. He was transported to A.O Fox Hospital but did not survive. The family member who attempted to free Vulaj suffered smoke inhalation and burns. The investigation is continuing.

Delaware County Deputies responded Tuesday night to the report of a 1 car motor vehicle accident on State Highway 23 in the Town of Stamford. Deputies confirmed that 4 occupants were in the vehicle, with 1 deceased. Nyheim Golden-Williams of Binghamton was pronounced deceased at the scene by a Delaware County Medical Examiner. The other occupants were identified as 17 year old Kayla Gonsalves of Delhi, 20 year old Alexis Lotterman of Walton, & 25 year old Isaiha Caballero of New York City. Gonsalves and Lotterman were taken to an area hospital for minor injuries, Caballero was transported to Fox Hospital for a possible neck injury. This investigation is still ongoing, and further charges may be pending, Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond encourages anyone with additional information to contact the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 607-832-5629.

45 year old Katrina Lott of West Edmeston pleaded guilty to Driving While Intoxicated and was sentenced to 3 years of probation, in Deposit Town Court last week. On June 13, 2023, Lott was driving on County Route 8, when she lost control of her vehicle and drove into the ditch. A State Trooper responded to the crash scene and determined that Lott was likely under the influence of alcohol when open containers were spotted in the vehicle. Lott had a BAC of .16% - two times the legal limit.

2 Law Enforcement officers were killed, and the suspect was also killed in an incident in Liverpool Sunday night. Syracuse Police Officers encountered a suspicious vehicle Sunday Night, they attempted a traffic stop & the vehicle took off, officers did get the License plate number, it was traced to a Liverpool address to stop the vehicle, Syracuse Police & Onondaga Sheriff's Deputies responded & were encountered by an armed male and an exchange of gunfire followed. One Syracuse Police Officer and one Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy were struck by gunfire. The armed suspect was also shot, all 3 were taken to Upstate University Hospital, all 3 succumbed to their injuries.
24-year-old Kelvin Marfo of Delhi was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operator of a Motor Vehicle, plus other charges following an accident investigation. On April 6th Deputies responded to an iPhone Crash Detection for a motor vehicle accident on State Highway 28 in the Town of Meredith. Deputies found the motor vehicle accident, 2 of the occupants were transported for non-life-threatening injuries to a local hospital, while 2 others were treated by EMS. Marfo’s driving privileges were suspended for Failing to Answer a Summons, Marfo was issued an Appearance Ticket to appear before the Town of Meredith Court at a later date.
Last Wednesday, Oneonta Police Department was called to investigate a reported gunshot wound by A.O. Fox hospital emergency room staff. Officers learned that 51-year-old John Walley of Otego was transported to the hospital by a third party in a private vehicle, which left before police arrived. Walley was interviewed briefly and stated that he was on Chestnut Street when he was injured by a bullet, no evidence at the scene was found, he was re-interviewed & has refused to cooperate. The case will be closed but may be re-opened should additional information be received and the victim agree to cooperate. Oneonta Police Department responded last night to investigate a reported gunshot wound victim at Fox Hospital's emergency room. Officers learned that a 51-year-old male victim was transported by a 3rd party in a private vehicle, which left the scene prior to the arrival of police. The victim stated that he was on Chestnut Street when he was injured by a bullet. Police searched the location & no evidence was found. Hospital Security Staff were able to provide surveillance video of the vehicle and individual dropping the victim off at the hospital. The Binghamton Police Department arrested a 17-year-old from Johnson City for leaving the scene of a pedestrian hit-and-run Tuesday afternoon. Binghamton Police responded at Court and Water streets for a report of a person who was crossing the road being struck by a vehicle, the victim was a 45 year old man from Binghamton, He was transported to an area hospital w& was in critical condition. Detectives found the suspect and their vehicle later, he was arrested & was released on an appearance ticket.

40 year old Jesse Barnum of Endicott was arrested in Pennsylvania on multiple felony charges for failing to register under the Sex Offender Registration Act. Barnum was found hiding under a blanket in the rear of a van, he was arrested and extradited to appear in Broome County and Town of Union courts. On Friday, April 1, 2024, members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Warrants Division and the United States Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force traveled to Scranton area, Barnum was wanted 2 separate counts of Failure to Register Under the Sex Offender Registration Act, plus Bail Jumping.

Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 0.3% in January compared to the same month in 2023, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Collections totaled nearly $1.9 billion, up $4.8 million from the same time last year, with the increase led by New York City's 3.5% increase, County and city collections in the rest of the state had a decrease of -2.8%, as 27 of 57 remaining counties experienced year-over-year increases.

Unadilla Fire Department was alerted for a house fire in the town of Unadilla Monday night with possible entrapment. Crews responded & it was quickly confirmed that all subjects were accounted for and out of the structure. One subject was transported to A.O. FOX Hospital, firefighters were able to halt the fire before it could spread to the rest of the residence. Unadilla received assistance from Franklin, Sidney Center, Wells Bridge, and Otego Fire Departments, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

State Police at Troop C has updated the situation regarding the January 29th incident, where Cortland County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve eviction paperwork to 58 year old Steven Burda who was in possession of a shotgun. State Police responded to the assist, they attempted to de-escalate the situation until Cortland Police Lieutenant Cheyenne Cute attempted to disarm Burda using beanbag impact rounds, which were ineffective and Burda discharged his shotgun at the Officers, who were not struck. Cortland County Sheriff’s Investigator Sergeant Anthony Phelps discharged his sidearm, striking Burda in the lower body. Burda was transported to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, he is in stable condition, State Police obtained an arrest warrant for Burda for Attempted Murder, he will be arraigned on the warrant following his release from the hospital.

Early Saturday at 2:04 AM the City of Norwich Fire Department was dispatched for the report of a structure fire involving a “carport” at 19 Miller Street in the City, firefighters found a working house fire, a single occupant was located at a 2nd floor window, jumped from the window & was taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital & was transported to University Hospital in Syracuse, listed in critical condition. Norwich Fire Department was assisted by the North Norwich & Oxford Fire Departments, Norwich Fire Chief Jan Papelino said that several tenants did escape, but 2 adult individuals were deceased. The investigation into the incident is still on going, with the City of Norwich Police Department, and the Chenango County Office Emergency Services Fire Investigation Unit.
Oneonta Police responded last Tuesday to the area of 30 Center Street to the report of a male that had suffered a gunshot wound. A 36-year-old male was located and was taken to an area hospital, an assailant fled the scene prior. Oneonta Police were assisted by State Police, State University Police at Oneonta and the Otsego County Sheriff's Office in the search for a suspect & collecting of evidence. Oneonta Police were able to identify the suspect as Miguel Alcaraz, who was taken into custody & was charged with 2nd degree Burglary last Wednesday. The State Health Department reported that flu cases rose by over 25% in the last week and hospitalizations have surged by 30%. Most of the cases have been reported in Western New York, especially in Erie, Niagara, and Chautauqua Counties. In the last recorded week, there were more than 4,000 cases reported in New York State, there has also been a surge in the respiratory virus known as RSV.

35 year-old Bradley Law of Harpursville was sentenced in Broome County Court to 2 concurrent sentences of 1 1/3rd to 4 years in prison Tuesday. Law hit 13 year old Brennan Loveless with a pickup truck on January 1st 2023 while the boy was riding his bike on the shoulder of Route 7 near his home in Sanitaria Springs. Law fled the scene while Loveless, who was thrown 180 feet down the shoulder, suffering serious injuries. Law then told police he hit a deer with his truck instead. Law pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a firearm and attempted leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident.

An investigation by Troopers at the scene determined that 25 year old La-Tee Baker of Oneonta, 21 year old Bryanna Patterson of Oneonta, and 23 year old Bethany Brown of Delhi, were involved in a fight, both women sustained injuries, Brown was transported to A.O. The State Comptroller's Office announced that State tax receipts totaled $51.5 billion through the 1st 6 months of State Fiscal Year 23-24, $1.7 billion higher than estimates released in the Division of the Budget in July. However, tax receipts were $6.9 billion lower than the first half the previous year according to the monthly State Cash Report released today. Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that Dylan Shoemaker of Chenango Forks pleaded guilty to 2nd Degree Assault, in Broome County Court Friday. Shoemaker admitted that on February 6th, he assaulted a State trooper, when police responded to a residence on Perch Pond Road in Windsor following the report of a domestic dispute. 1 trooper was hit in the face and the same trooper was cut by glass as he wrestled Shoemaker to the ground, he was treated and released at a local hospital. Shoemaker has a lengthy criminal history, he will be sentenced to 12 years to life in New York State prison on January 12.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 18 year old Craig Longo of Rocky Point for driving while ability impaired by drugs, and criminal possession of a weapon. On September 24th, Deputies were assisting Delhi Police, State Police, and SUNY Delhi Police with a failure to comply traffic violator in the Village of Delhi. Patrols located the vehicle in question on Back River Road in the Town of Delhi, and that Longo had been operating the vehicle, he was released on appearance tickets and directed to appear at the Town of Delhi court at a later date to answer the charges.

State police reported that 82 year old Lorena Mayes of Norwich was killed from a 2-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon in the town of North Norwich. Police reported that Mayes was operating her vehicle at County Highway 32 and State Highway 12, she pulled out into the path of an SUV traveling north on Route 12. Mayes was transported to Chenango Hospital, but did not survive. A 91-year-old passenger in the Mayes vehicle was taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both occupants of the SUV were taken to Basset Hospital in Cooperstown with non-life-threatening injuries.

Delaware County 911 received call Sunday from the operator of tractor trailer stating that he had traveled off the roadway and had rolled over on State Highway 23 in the Town of Kortright. Delaware County Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to the scene along with members of the Davenport Fire Department, Stamford Fire Department, Bovina Fire Department, Headwaters EMS and NYS DEC Spill Response team. 61 year old Michael Rowe of Sidney was taken to Fox Hospital for minor injuries and was released. The investigation into the crash is continuing and tickets are pending.
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced new steps to protect individuals from COVID-19 following reports of a new variant, BA.2.86. COVID-19 hospitalizations in New York increased as the summer progressed, an updated COVID-19 vaccine tailored to guard against certain newer variants is expected to arrive in pharmacies and doctor’s offices next month after the Food and Drug Administration advised vaccine manufacturers to develop a new COVID-19 vaccine to target Omicron variants.
Law enforcement in Pennsylvania have charged a New York woman, following an investigation into a car/pedestrian accident, where the pedestrian died & the driver left the scene. Lisa Barnes of Johnson City was charged with Leaving the Scene of a Deadly Crash after the crash on August 11th in Clinton Township, Franklin Pauler was unresponsive and suffering from a severe bleeding injury to his head, Barnes turned herself in the following day, claiming that she was lost & her GPS was not working, Pauler had died from his injuries at an area hospital the day after the accident.
