State Police responded to a report of a 1-car fatal rollover motor vehicle accident on State Route 17. 36 year old Fareeha Nausheen of Monticello was operating a Honda minivan in a construction zone, when she lost control of the vehicle, it skidded across the open westbound lane of traffic and continued into the lane of traffic under construction, causing the vehicle to roll over several times. 77 year old Muktar Began of Monticello was ejected and was struck by the vehicle prior to it coming to rest in the center median, Began was pronounced deceased at the scene. A 3-year-old rear seat passenger was also ejected from the vehicle and sustained a minor injury. 4 surviving passengers were transported to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. Nausheen was ticketed for moving from lane unsafely and failure to use child restraint seats for rear seat passengers & faces court action in the Town of Windsor Court on August 11th.
The Oneonta Police Department responded to a report of a robbery at the Smokers Choice Sunday at 76 Chestnut Street in Oneonta. The investigation revealed that the clerk on duty at the time, with another person, had conspired to steal money from the Smokers Choice and intended to report the theft as a robbery. Police arrested 20-year-old Morgan Reichart of Oneonta, for 5th degree Grand Larceny, 5th degree Conspiracy, Making a Punishable False Written Statement and Falsely Reporting an Incident. 26-year-old Mark Briley of Oneonta was charged with 5th degree Grand Larceny, & 5th degree Conspiracy, both were being held until arraignment in Oneonta court.
State Senate Republicans have secured a legally binding memorandum of understanding with the governor’s office amending provisions of the New York SAFE Act. The document suspends a portion of the SAFE Act establishing a statewide database requiring purchasers of ammunition to undergo a background check. The MOU also ends the moratorium on Internet sales of ammunition.
Governor Cuomo announced that more than $350,000 is available to help low-income families and veterans to participate in the FreshConnect Checks Program, which increases the purchasing power of food stamps used at participating farmers markets. More than 84,000 checks have already been issued to 152 sites across the state to help eligible New Yorkers access healthy foods, including fruits and vegetables. The program has also been extended to operate year-round at participating farmers’ markets, providing the opportunity to use checks 12 months a year. A full list and map of participating venues can be found at freshconnect.ny.gov.
The Great New York State Fair is seeking singers to be the very first musical performers of each day. The contest is looking for New Yorkers to sing or play the National Anthem live twice in one day: once at 9:30 a.m. at Chevy Court to open the Fair, and again at 1 p.m. in the Toyota Coliseum to kick off afternoon equestrian competitions. Interested parties can upload videos to the contest site on the Fair's Facebook page, or Email submissions to newyorkstatefair@agriculture.ny.gov. or drop off entries on DVD at the State Fair administrative office or mail them to the Fair at 581 State Fair Blvd., Syracuse NY, 13209. Entries must be uploaded, emailed, or postmarked by midnight, July 21st.
By a vote of 344-77, the House of Representatives adopted the 21st Century Cures Act, the legislation was authored by area Congressman Chris Gibson to combat Lyme disease and tick-borne illnesses, prioritizing federal research, setting benchmarks for progress on treatment and cures, acknowledging chronic Lyme, and giving patients and physicians who treat tick-borne illnesses a voice in the process. The National Institutes of Health will receive an additional $1.75 billion per year for the next five years and the FDA will receive an additional $550 million to help combat the illnesses.

State Police responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a passenger car and a motorcycle on Route 11 in the Town of Marathon. 42 year old Christopher Tanner of Marathon crossed the center of the roadway, striking a motorcycle being operated by 49 year-old Shanon Nasoni of Endicott. Nasoni was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, where she was pronounced deceased. Tanner had a BAC of .21, he was charged with Vehicular Manslaughter, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, and Failure to Keep Right. Tanner was arraigned in the Town of Marathon Court and was remanded to the Cortland County Jail without bail.
The trial of State Senator Tom Libous of Binghamton is scheduled to begin today. Libous was indicted last year for allegedly making a false statement to the FBI, when he was questioned about using his political influence to get his son Matthew a job at a Westchester County Law firm. Matthew Libous was found guilty last week on 3 counts of falsifying federal tax returns & he faces sentencing at a later date.
The “Greater Chenango Cares” event begins today through Wednesday the 22nd at the Norwich HIgh School Complex. Area residents can receive free medical, dental, optical & even Veterinary services from trained Army personel from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm each day.Chenango County Planning Department Spokesperson Rena Doing said that shuttle bus service is available:

For the first time, online purchases will be available throughout all 12 days of the Fair and fairgoers will be able to use an electronic ticket on their smartphone for easy entry. Tickets will be available online and in hundreds of stores across New York. 5 products will be sold online at www.etix.com, the State Fair runs from August 27th to September 7th this year.
