Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 44 year old Christopher West of Deposit following the report of copper piping stolen from a house while the residents were out of town. On Tuesday, deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked at a residence on Yarnes Road in the Town of Colesville, the vehicle was registered to West, Deputies confirmed with the homeowner that no one was allowed to be in the residence. West was located in the basement and was taken into custody without incident. Copper pipes were found to have been cut, West was charged with Burglary, Criminal Mischief & Possession of Burglar Tools, he was processed and remains in custody at the Broome County Correctional Facility.

State Police responded to a 2-vehicle crash on Interstate 88 in the town of Sidney Friday Afternoon. A tractor trailer and a pick-up truck were traveling west when they made contact, The pick-up truck continued off the roadway. The tractor trailer exited the roadway and turned on its side. The operator of the pick-up truck, a 77-year-old male sustained injuries and was transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center and is in stable condition. The operator of the tractor trailer, a 56-year-old male was transported to A.O Fox Hospital. Interstate 88 west was shut down to assist with the removal of the tractor trailer, Motorists were detoured at exit 10. Troopers were assisted by the New York State Department of Transportation with the closure. The investigation is on-going.
Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 40 year old Mathew O'Neill of Windsor with Driving While Intoxicated following a motor vehicle accident involving a boat and a tow truck in the Town of Colesville. On January 5, Responding deputies found a Ford Expedition smashed under a boat, with the rear of the boat pressed directly against the structure of a residence. The investigation revealed that O'Neill's vehicle left the road way and struck the parked boat, which collided with a residence and a tow truck parked nearby. No injuries were reported.

State Police arrested 42 year old Francisco Ortiz of Deposit Monday for Felony Assault following a domestic dispute. Troopers were dispatched to a report of a domestic dispute in a vehicle traveling on Interstate 88 in the town of Colesville. Ortiz is accused of striking a victim in the face and crushing the victim’s arm in the middle console of his vehicle, as well as breaking a door at the victim’s residence in Afton. The victim was transported to Tri-Town Regional Hospital in Sidney for treatment to injuries, Ortiz was located in Deposit and arrested, He was transported to the Broome County Jail for Centralized Arraignment, and he was issued appearance tickets to the Afton Town Court on January 20 for the damage he caused to the victim’s door.
A Public Hearing will be held by the Village of Sidney Planning Board Today at 5:00 pm, at Civic Center, on Liberty Street. The hearing is in reference to a major realty subdivision of Clover Hill Lane requested by owner of Parcels located East of County Rt. 4 and West Main Street. A regular meeting of the Village of Sidney Planning Board will follow the hearing.

West Colesville Fire Chief James Sitek suffered a medical emergency while responding to the fire, Friday Morning in Conklin. Sitek was transported to Wilson Hospital where he was pronounced deceased, he served as the West Colesville Fire Chief for 3 years. The Case is currently under investigation by the Broome County Fire Investigation Office, the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, and the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.

Broome County District Attorney's Office announced that Dylan Shoemaker of Colesville was sentenced to 12 years to life for 2nd degree Assault in Broome County Court. On February 6, 2023, State Troopers responded to Shoemaker’s residence in Nineveh for a domestic incident. Shoemaker punched a Trooper while being placed into custody, resulting in injury of that Trooper.
The Harpursville Fire Department responded to a fire Saturday at 329 Hartz Road in the Town of Colesville. Harpursville Firefighters were assisted at the scene by firefighters from Windsor, West Windsor, Deposit, Masonville, Greene, Afton, Port Crane & several other departments responded, firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading, there was mostly smoke & water damage.

21 year old Patrick Dai of Pittsford, and Cornell University, was arrested Tuesday on a federal criminal complaint charging him with posting threats to kill or injure another using interstate communications. Dai is accused of posting messages to the Cornell section of an online discussion site, where he allegedly called for the deaths of Jewish people and a post threatening to shoot up 104 west, which is a Cornell University kosher dining hall located next to the Cornell Jewish Center. The charge filed against Dai carries a maximum term of 5 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years. Dai is being held at the Broome County Correctional Facility pending court action in a federal court in Syracuse.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office released the name of the victim killed in a fatal motor vehicle accident on Monday. 17 year old Makai Wilkinson of Harpursville was driving a pickup truck with 2 passengers on Welton Street in the Town of Colesville when the vehicle left the roadway and collided with a tree. The two passengers were transported Wilson Hospital, one for minor injuries and the other for serious injuries, but Wilkinson was pronounced dead at the scene. This is an ongoing investigation.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office released the identity of the man found deceased in Fox Hospital Oneonta Bathroom in May. 32 year old Michael Morton of West Winfield died of a drug overdose sometime between May 30th and May 31. The autopsy found fentanyl, oxycodone, and several other substances.

Broome County Sheriff’s deputies responded Friday to a report of a 2-car motor vehicle accident on Route 7 in the Town of Colesville. 40 year old Jesse Zurn of Port Crane was charged Driving While Intoxicated, plus aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Making an Unsafe Lane Change, Zurn was released on an appearance ticket to answer for his charges at the Town of Colesville Court later this month. The Driver of the other vehicle was not injured, and not charged in connection with the accident.

The State Health Department reports elevated levels of COVID 19's latest strains, in all regions of the state in their testing on Friday. There were 11 deaths reported for Friday with 222 patients in ICU and 79 patients on Ventilators, The statewide positivity rate for the day is 9.20%, the Southern tier had among the lowest positivity rates at 6.12% Friday.
The State Comptroller's office audited the West Colesville Volunteer Fire Company, the audit found that the board did not have sufficient controls or information to ensure all disbursements were appropriate and necessary. As a result, the company made unnecessary disbursements totaling $4,107, the board also could not determine whether all collections were properly recorded or deposited.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is warning people of a phishing scam claiming the state is offering $1,500 rebates because of high gas prices, where the scammers send text messages instructing people to click the link to see if they qualify, the link leads to a website designed to look like the actual DMV site. It asks for personal information, State officials report that this is an attempt at identity theft or to install malicious software on computers or cell phones. If you suspect you may have been contacted through a phishing scam, you can email the DMV at: dmv.sm.phishingattacks@dmv.ny.gov.

Several Fire Departments responded to the report of a fire at the Town of Windsor barn Thursday afternoon. The investigation revealed that the fire started in the bay area of a garage, with fire damage to the entire garage itself with most of the damage occurring in the bay area. Windsor, West Windsor, Harpursville, West Colesville, 5 Mile Point, Deposit fire departments responded, no injuries were reported.
Late Wednesday Night into early Thursday Morning, State Troopers and members from the State DOT assisted with the closure of State Route 17 west between exits 67 and 66 to remove a large piece of machinery. Back on February 25th, a tractor trailer, which was not permitted properly, was pulling a large piece of machinery when it suffered a mechanical failure during transport. The weight of the machinery was too heavy to move and a crane from Rogers Industrial & Crane Specialists was brought in to move the load off the first trailer and onto another properly permitted trailer.

The New York Department of State today announced Broome County and the municipalities of Binghamton, Colesville, Deposit and Sanford have received a total of $229,655 in state matching funds through the County-Wide Shared Services Initiative. The State Health Department reported declining numbers of COVID 19 positivity rates for Tuesday. Over 129,000 tests were conducted, with 2124 positives, for a positivity rate of 1.64%, hospitalizations were down to 1,832, with 310 ICU Patients & 166 on ventilators, there were 19 deaths in hospitals & nursing homes on Tuesday from the virus.
6 year old Trinity O'Connor of Sidney passed away Tuesday following a battle with cancer throughout her young life, Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 PM on Friday, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney. A fundraiser for the O'Connor family will be held today by Gavin's Pizza at Awestruck in the Sidney Industrial Park today until 9:00 PM, with 100% of food proceeds going to the family. There will be a Sidney Warrior Community Send Off with Firetrucks & a Motorcycles brigade beginning at 9:00 AM on Saturday, community members are invited to line the procession route from the CH Landers Funeral Chapel, up West Main Street, to Delaware Avenue & to the Old Amphenol Parking Lot. 34 year old Jason Johnson, who was wanted since Wednesday Night in connection with shooting a New York State Trooper, was taken into custody at about 4:30 Thursday afternoon in the town of Colesville.  State Police & Broome County Deputies were sent on a Welfare check of an individual Wednesday night at about 8:30PM, Johnson is accused of Shooting Trooper Becky Seager, who suffered a non-life threatening hip injury & was treated & released at Wilson Hospital.   Johnson was arraigned this morning at Broome County Central Arraignment and Processing on 2 counts of Attempted Murder, he was remanded to the Broome County Jail on no bail.  Other charges are pending.
State Police announced the Run for the Fallen begins in Syracuse today & heads toward Albany over 3 days, to honor fallen service members.  Part of the second day of the run comes through Otsego County & Traffic delays are likely around 11:00 a.m., along State Route 20 from West Winfield through Richfield Springs and East Springfield. The race ends Sunday from Sharon Springs to Albany; more information is available on the State Police website.

The State Health Department continues to see favorable numbers regarding COVID.  The state tested over 176,000 New Yorkers Tuesday with 4% positive, the lowest rate since late November, Hospitalizations continue to decrease, the number of Patients in an ICU bed went up slightly & the number of Patients on Ventilators decreased to 955, there were 136 COVID related deaths Tuesday.
A.O. Fox Hospital’s Tri-Town Campus announced that they will be holding a blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross on Monday, February 15th, between 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the main conference room at 43 Pearl Street West in Sidney.   Appointments are required at redcrossblood.org or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS, all blood types are needed.
State Police responded Tuesday Morning at about 11:30, to Interstate 88 west in the town of Bainbridge for a 2-vehicle crash involving a State Department of Transportation Plow and a garbage truck.   The westbound lanes were closed at exit 9 for several hours to remove the two vehicles.  An investigation revealed that the plow truck was in the left lane plowing the passing lane and shoulder of the roadway.  The garbage truck passed on the right and struck the snowplow wing on the passenger side.  The impact caused both vehicles to go into the median. The garbage truck was registered to Global Transportation in Iowa & was being operated by 77-year-old male from Tennessee, The DOT truck was operated by a 22-year-old male of Oxford with a 55-year-old passenger of Greene, and No injuries were reported.  The roadway reopened around 2:20 p.m.
State Police at Binghamton are searching for a missing runaway teen. 15 year old Trevor Mallory was last seen on February 2nd at 4:30 PM leaving an address on Colesville Road in the town of Colesville.  Troopers were told he got into a grey colored 4-door-sedan; the vehicle make and model are unknown.  Mallory is described as 5 foot 9 inches and 135 pounds.  He has brown hair and brown eyes, anyone with information should contact State Police at 775-1241.

Delaware County Sheriff’s
Deputies arrested 19 year old Trent Wade of Rochester for Aggravated Unlicensed
Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Operation of a Motor Vehicle with Improper
plates, Speed not Reasonable and Prudent, and Operating a Motor Vehicle without
Insurance. Wade was charged following a Motor Vehicle Accident on County
Highway 14 in the Town of Meredith. Wade is scheduled to appear before the Town
of Meredith Court at a later date.

The State DOT announced completion of a $1.1 million project
that replaced a culvert under Dilly Road in the Town of Colesville. The new
culvert ensures more efficient water flow underneath the road, reducing erosion
and enhancing safety for motorists traveling to and from nearby State Route 7.
The Town of Colesville assisted in the project and will maintain the new
pre-cast concrete box culvert.  The bulk
of construction took place last summer to comply with stream work restrictions
and minimize disruptions to school bus routes.
The American Red Cross is holding 2 more blood drives locally
today, 1 in New Berlin from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM at 12 School Street, another
will be held from 11:30 AM to  4:30 PM at

The Broome County Sheriff's Department responded Sunday to a
Disturbance on Hancock Road in the Town of Colesville. Responding deputies
identified 35 year old Clifford Whitman Jr., as being involved in the dispute,
he had an active Felony Warrant out of Susquehanna County Pennsylvania for his
arrest.  Whitman fled through the woods;
he was taken into custody after a quarter mile foot chase & was turned over
to Correctional Staff for arraignment. One Deputy sustained minor injuries
during the struggle, which did not require medical care.  Whitman was charged as a Fugitive from Justice,
plus 2nd degree Assault, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Resisting Arrest
& Obstructing Governmental Administration.
The Village of Bainbridge Zoning Board of Appeals will hold
a special meeting this evening at 6:30 PM at the Village clerk's Office at 33
West Main Street.  The purpose of the
meeting is to discuss a variance & Special Permit for 5 Prospect Street and
a Special Permit for 62 West Main Street.

Ouaquaga Road in the town of Colesville.
All occupants escaped safely, & no injuries were reported.
Firefighters from Harpursville, West Colesville, Sanitaria Springs, Five Mile
Point, West Windsor, Windsor and Ouaquaga responded.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On January 20th troopers were dispatched to a possible
overdose in a vehicle parked in Dollar General on North Road in the town of
Windsor.  Troopers observed both
occupants passed out, they were assessed by paramedics & were charged with
a variety of drug & other charges.  Arrested
were 24 year old Caitlynn Rhodes of Colesville, & 24 year old Tieler
Kennerup of Windsor, they were arraigned at Broome County Central Arraignment
and Processing.  Kennerup was released on
his own recognizance and Rhodes was remanded to the Broome County Jail without
bail.

infrastructure tour today, in the Town of Windsor where he will meet with local

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded Friday to a fatal motorcycle crash in Colesville on Cafferty Road. 57-year-old Keith Bernhardsen of Harpursville was located in a field on the side of the road, he was transported Bernhardsen to Wilson Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Bernhardsen attempted to make a left turn and the motorcycle went off the road into the field.
Oneonta Department of Public Service announced that crews will be flushing water mains in the high service area starting 9 am to 4 pm, today. Affected areas include: Homer Folks Ave., Overlook Drive, Suncrest Terrace, College Terrace, West St. Ravine Parkway and the streets north of SUNY Oneonta. Flushing in these areas is expected to be completed this week, with flushing in other areas to continue the following week. The Harpursville Fire Department has been awarded a regional Assistance to Firefighter's Grant for $372,130 for emergency radio communications equipment. Chenango County Sheriff's Detective’s Division and Norwich City Police responded to the area of the stone quarry off West Main Street Extension, in the Town of Norwich for a narcotics investigation. 2 individuals were found in a tent with Methamphetamine, materials to manufacture Methamphetamine and a fire pit they used to burn Methamphetamine waste and byproducts. Detectives arrested 29 year old Amber Towndrow and 30 year old Steven Pighinni for Unlawful manufacture of methamphetamine, Criminal Possession of a controlled substance, Unlawful disposal of Methamphetamine and Trespassing. 21-year-old Rebel Whitman of Binghamton man faces several charges, after allegedly trying to flee law enforcement. The Broome County Sheriff's Office attempted to stop a vehicle on Colesville Road near Route 11 in the Town of Kirkwood early this morning, Whitman allegedly failed to comply & continued to Sanitaria Springs, into Chenango County through back roads & then onto State Route 206 in the Town of Greene, where he sideswiped a State Police vehicle before traveling into a ditch. Whitman & a passenger were taken into custody, Whitman was charged with Forgery, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer, Reckless Driving, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, plus numerous other Violations. Whitman was arraigned in the Town of Kirkwood Court and taken to the Broome County Jail. Whitman's unidentified passenger was released.

The Broome County Sheriff's responded to 4 Light Road in the Town of Colesville on January 1st, for a reported fight. The suspects were eventually determined to be father and son Robert Woodward the 3rd & Robert Woodward the 4th, both arrested and charged with assault, they will appear in the Town of Colesville Court on a later date to answer to the charges.
3 people were left homeless from a Wednesday morning trailer fire in the town of Laurens. Firefighters from Laurens, West Oneonta, Mount Vision & West Laurens responded to the fire at the Valley Stream Mobile Home, The fire was knocked down within 20 minutes, no injuries were reported.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office have charged a man with DWI, following an accident involving 3 tractor trailers Monday morning. The accident occurred on Colesville Road in Kirkwood, where a tractor trailer driven by 54 year old Daniel Masonic of Binghamton, crossed over the double yellow lines and struck two other tractor trailers who were headed the opposite direction. Masonic's truck then went off the road, up an embankment, and struck a group of trees. Masonic's BAC was .18%. He was issued tickets to appear at a later date in the Town of Kirkwood court.

On Tuesday afternoon at about 2:10 pm, State Police responded to a reported armed robbery at the Runway Food Mart, Gulf Gas Station, on Martin Hill Road in the town of Colesville. State Police are currently seeking one suspect, a white male, small build, wearing a blue sweatshirt and jeans. A handgun and knife were displayed and the suspect was last seen exiting the gas station on foot in an unknown direction. Anyone with information is requested to contact State Police at 775-1241.
The Oneonta city department of public service has completed the flushing of water mains in the city's west end. Officials announced that the final phase of low service flushing would begin next week in the 6th ward, starting on Monday & lasting several weeks. Water may be discolored or pressure may be low during the flushing, more information is available at 432-2100.

Fire departments from Harpursville, Five Mile Point, West Colesville and Windsor responded to a fire at 927 Trim Street in Windsor at around 7:30 this morning.   Fire investigators believe that the fire started in the rear of the home & was possibly caused by a defective wood stove.   One occupant escaped without injury, no injuries among firefighters were reported.
