Chenango County Health Department reported that a raccoon found along State Highway 80 between Sherburne and Columbus was tested by the Wadsworth Laboratories, and was found to have rabies. Residents and visitors in the area are advised to not pick up or handle any stray or wild animal, If your pet or livestock is behaving strangely contact your veterinarian immediately. The State Department of Health announced the 1st case of measles in New York State outside of New York City in 2025, the 3rd case in the state this year. The case was identified in a patient less than 5 years of age in Suffolk County and was confirmed at the Department's Wadsworth Laboratory in Albany. It has been determined there was potential exposure to measles for the public and persons who visited the pediatric emergency department at Cohen Children's Medical Center on March 3 to March 4, or visited an inpatient child there on March 3 to March 6. More information is available at health.ny.gov/diseases. All New Yorkers are urged to protect themselves by making sure they're up to date on vaccines.

State Police were dispatched last Wednesday to an accident involving a UTV in the town of Smithville. An investigation revealed that a UTV was on Waldon Road in the town of Smithville when the operator; 52 year old William Williams of Greene lost control, left the roadway, struck a tree and the UTV came to rest on its side. Williams did not survive, the unidentified 24-year-old passenger was transported to Wilson Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is on-going.
The Chenango County Health Department announced that raccoon located on County Route 10 in the Hamlet of Preston was tested on May 30, 2024, by the NYS Wadsworth Laboratory and was found to have rabies. 32 year old Anthony Schorer of Burlington was sentenced to 10 years probation in Otsego County Court. Schorer pleaded guilty to a 2nd degree criminal sexual act against a child, State Police originally arrested Schorer on January 4th and his brother, 33 year old Timothy Schorer of Hartwick on January 11th, he is due in court on June 24th. The alleged crimes happened between 2003 and 2010, the victim was between the ages of 5 and 11 years old.

The State Department of Health today announced the 1st confirmed orthopoxvirus case outside of New York City, following testing at the Wadsworth Lab in Albany. The Sullivan County health department is treating the case as a probable monkeypox case, and contact tracing efforts are underway. George Wang of Lawrence Kansas was sentenced in Otsego County Court Monday, to go to a state run Psychiatric Center for the treatment of a mental disease. Wang was originally charged with Attempted Murder after the car he was driving veered off of State Route 28 in Hartwick on November 18th of 2020, striking a pedestrian in a parking lot, and then left the scene. Wang pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect recently, he will stay in a facility until he is deemed to be not a danger to himself or the public.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the detection of 4 more confirmed cases of the COVID-19 Omicron variant in New York State, for a total of 12. 2 of the new cases are from Suffolk County and 2 are from Oneida County. The State Health Department reported 4 new cases of the UK variant of COVID 19 has been reported in New York State. 2 of the cases were identified in Saratoga County and 2 in Suffolk County, there are 22 known cases of the variant in the state, The Wadsworth Lab is also continuously testing for other COVID-19 virus strains and so far, no other variants besides the UK strain have been found in New York.

Governor Cuomo announced that the first confirmed case of the UK strain of COVID-19 virus has been detected in Saratoga Springs, it was detected by the Department of Health's Wadsworth laboratory & the strain was traced back to an individual affiliated with a Saratoga Springs jewelry store and all individuals who visited the store from December 18 through December 24 are encouraged to contact the Department of Health and receive a COVID-19 test immediately.
The Binghamton Devils will play the 2020-21 season in Newark, New Jersey at the Prudential Center, which is home to the New Jersey Devils.  The AHL announced that 4 teams have been granted provisional relocations for the 2020-21 season due to COVID concerns, including the Binghamton Devils.

County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested and charged 50-Year-Old Edmund Rajner of
Sidney Sunday for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, unlicensed operation of a
motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without an inspection certificate, as
well as failure to signal a turn.  Rajner
was released on traffic tickets and is scheduled to appear in the Village of
Sidney Court on a later date.

Governor
Cuomo announced that the state will begin testing for the Corona Virus at their
own Wadsworth labs in Albany.  Previous

has committed a $250,000 for a new emergency room and walk-in center at UHS
Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.
Officials from Preferred Mutual Insurance Company announced the pledge
on Tuesday; it will be paid over the next 5 years, & is the largest
corporate commitment to be announced since the Norwich hospital kicked off a
capital campaign started last month.
US Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten
Gillibrand reported that they were told by the Defense Department that $160
million in funding allocated for an engineering center and supporting
structures at West Point would be repurposed for the Border Wall between Texas
& Mexico.   Gillibrand stated aid
that Trump is taking money from West Point and 126 other military installation
projects across the country in order to work around Congress and build the southern
border wall.
The State Department of Health today
announced new findings of its ongoing investigation into the vaping-associated lung
illnesses that have been reported across the state, including an updated case
count and information regarding the testing being conducted at the Department’s
Wadsworth Center Laboratory.  the
Department has received 34 reports from physicians of severe pulmonary illness
among patients ranging from 15 to 46 years of age who were using at least 1
cannabis-containing vape product before they became ill, Laboratory test
results showed very high levels of vitamin E acetate in nearly all
cannabis-containing samples analyzed by the Wadsworth Center as part of this
investigation. At least one vitamin E acetate containing vape product has been
linked to each patient. The Wadsworth Center is testing both cannabis and
nicotine-containing vape products as part of this investigation.

Governor Cuomo today directed the State Department of Health to expand free Zika virus testing to all pregnant women who, during their pregnancy, had unprotected sex with a partner who traveled to an area with ongoing Zika virus transmission. This expansion comes as the Department is investigating 1 case of possible sexual transmission of the Zika virus, and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published reports of increasing numbers of confirmed and probable sexual transmission of Zika virus, including several involving pregnant women. To date The State Lab at the Wadsworth Center in Albany has conducted tests on samples from more than 1,400 patients and 40 have been found to be positive, those infected patients have been returning travelers from countries where Zika virus is ongoing.

Governor Cuomo today announced the New York State Department of Health will offer advanced lab testing for individuals with symptoms who have travelled to areas where Zika virus infection is ongoing. This will be done by the Wadsworth Center – one of only three state laboratories in the nation with the ability to conduct this kind of advanced testing – and will also include screening and confirmatory tests for antibodies against Zika and other related viruses. Pinpointing the source of a salmonella outbreak may soon take less time and be more accurate, due to the next generation DNA sequencing techniques being used at the State’s Wadsworth Center Laboratories. The technology enables public health laboratories to rapidly identify strains of salmonella and quicken responses to potential outbreaks.
