State Senator Fred Akshar held a press conference at the
Broome County Sheriff’s Department yesterday, vowing to fight to overturn or
fix some of the portions of the Bail Reform law that just went into effect that
is sending some violent criminals back out onto the streets:

Akshar said that numerous cases
have occurred already where someone has been released on an appearance ticket,
and almost immediately committed a crime that they would not have been able to
commit if they had been remanded to jail like they would have last year.

The opening of the 2020 personal income tax filing season
has begun, with a dozen free tax filing assistance sites across New York State.
Taxpayers who earned $69,000 or less in 2019 are eligible to file both their
federal and New York State income tax returns at these locations at no cost.
Eligible taxpayers may also prepare and file their returns for free by using
tax preparation software available through the State Tax Department's

The State Department of Labor today released preliminary
local area unemployment rates for September 2019. The State’s seasonally adjusted
unemployment rate decreased from 4.0% to 3.9% in September 2019.  Locally Chenango County had 3.7%
unemployment, Delaware County had 3.9% & Otsego County had 3.6%
unemployment in September.
The Raymond Corporation’s founder George Raymond Sr. was
announced as an inductee into the 2019 Supply Chain Hall of Fame at their
recent EDGE Conference in Anaheim, California.
George Raymond Sr. established the company in 1922 when he purchased a
foundry in Greene, 17 years later; George Raymond Sr. was granted patents for
the double-faced wooden pallet and the hydraulic hand pallet truck
revolutionizing the material handling industry.
Contract Talks are underway for 65 Registered Nurses at
Chenango Memorial Hospital, represented by 1199SEIU, United Healthcare Workers
East.  The current collective bargaining
agreement, negotiated in 2016, is set to expire on October 31st.
Governor Cuomo signed legislation requiring pharmacies to
inform patients of Class I drug recalls made by the FDA within 7 days. Class 1
Drugs have a high probability of causing serious adverse health consequences or
death, the severity of health risks is higher for elderly patients and those
taking long-term medications. This law takes effect immediately.
The State Department of Health announced new services for
e-cigarette users seeking help to stop vaping, through the State’s Smokers’
Quitline.   The Department added the
service to address the growing need to help users of e-cigarettes break their
dependence on vaping, the Quitline is available at 1-866-NY-QUITS
Breast cancer survivors will share their stories at the
next Women’s Health talk this evening at Bohemian Moon in Norwich as part of

James Brower was sentenced in Chenango County Court Monday
to 1 1/2 to 4 1/2 years in prison after a guilty plea of hindering prosecution
in connection with the death of 11 year old Jacelyn O’Connor in the town of
Norwich 2 years ago.   Tobias Rundstrom Wooding
was sentenced to 20 years in prison last year, for the raping and killing
O’Connor.
The Chenango County Department of Public Works shall close
County Road 14 between The Madison County Line and Conley Road, in the Town of
Smyrna today.  The closure is in place
for the replacement of a large culvert, officials estimate that the project
could take about 3 days, Motorists are asked to seek alternative routes, local

19 year old Hunter Speenburgh pleaded guilty to 2nd degree
assault & was sentenced to 1 year in jail on Monday in Chenango County
Court.  Speenburgh along with Landon
Cummings & Brendan Gager were arrested in connection with an assault of a
victim who was left unconscious, with a fractured eye socket and some teeth
knocked out in October of last year, after the victim allegedly attempted to
buy marijuana from Jade Orlando of Norwich.

State Police arrested 27 year old David Baldo of Oneonta for
Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Criminal Possession of a Controlled
Substance & Unlawful Possession of a Marihuana.  Baldo was stopped during a road check on
Lower Main Street in the town of Oneonta; Troopers were able to smell marijuana
and located a quantity of marijuana and pills.
Baldo was issued appearance tickets returnable to the town of Oneonta Court
on April 23, 2019 and released to a sober third party.
22 year old Cheyanne Moore of Norwich pleaded guilty in
Chenango County Court to 5th degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  Moore had been arrested following a raid on
her Norwich apartment last December, where police confiscated several narcotics.  Moore faces sentencing at a later date.

Broome County DA Steven Cornwell announced that a Broome
County Grand Jury handed up a 5-count indictment against 45 year old Wilfredo
Pica-Torres of Binghamton, for 2nd-degree murder, attempted Murder & 1st
& 2nd degree arson in connection with incident on Walnut Street in
Binghamton in February.  Pica-Torres is
accused of intentionally setting a fire to a building at 109 Walnut Street in
Binghamton on February 9th, which led to the death of Victor Banayan.

projects that will protect and transform New York State's health care system.
This funding from the Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program
will improve patient care through the development of high-quality medical

Governor Cuomo is proposing a measure for school buses to be
equipped with cameras to record drivers who illegally pass stopped school
buses, and to put seat belts on school buses.
The proposals are included in the 2019-2020 state budget plan he
