Another Sidney Community Clean-Up will be held at Keith Clark Park on Saturday, the Starting time is set for 9:00 at the park pavilion. Volunteers will help variety of jobs throughout the walking trail areas. some tools will be available, or volunteers may bring their favorite shovels, pruners or other gardening gear. Work gloves should be worn.
The Unadilla Flag Day Parade will be held on Main Street in Unadilla, this Sunday featuring marching bands, vintage tractors, antique vehicles, and dozens of local fire departments. The Parade starts at 3:00 PM from Unatego Elementary School to the Community House.

State Police arrested 26 year old Ryan Gregory of Coram, Wednesday following a neighbor dispute that resulted in a man shot on Houghtaling Hollow Road in the Town of Meredith, Gregory allegedly shot the victim and 2 unoccupied vehicles. A 57-year-old male from Meredith sustained non-life threatening injuries and went to A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta, he was later transported to Albany Medical Center for further treatment. Troopers located Gregory at his local residence where he was in possession of firearms and refused commands to surrender, after several hours, Gregory surrendered and was charged with Attempted Murder, Criminal Use of a Firearm & Additional charges are likely. Gregory was processed then transported to the Delaware County Jail for Arraignment.

A Troy New York man wanted as a suspect in a shooting investigation was apprehended by the Broome County Sheriff’s Strategic Response Group and taken into custody within 5 minutes of his vehicle triggering a license plate reader in the City of Binghamton. On Wednesday, local law enforcement received an Attempt to Locate bulletin from the Watervliet Police Department regarding a possibly armed male suspect and vehicle wanted in relation to a shooting investigation in Watervliet. The vehicle was located in Binghamton, a traffic stop was conducted at a fast food drive through lane the unidentified suspect was taken into custody, members of the Watervliet Police took custody of the suspect and he was returned to answer for his charges.
Attorney General Letitia James today announced that 74 year old Miles Marshall of Hamilton was sentenced to 4 to 12 years in prison for operating a Ponzi scheme that fraudulently stole more than $50 million from 988 investors in Madison County and other nearby counties. Marshall convinced unsuspecting clients to invest millions of dollars into his so-called "Eight Percent Fund," claiming that their funds would be primarily used for real estate investments, Instead, Marshall used the funds to pay investment returns to prior investors, cover the expenses of his other businesses, and to fund shopping trips, vacations, and restaurant visits. Marshall's scheme lasted three decades, and in April, he pleaded guilty as a result of investigation.

The rabid raccoon exposed 2 dogs, There were no human exposures. Both dogs are up to date on their rabies vaccinations and received a booster. A Local Couple that just lost their senior dog have decided to set up a fundraiser in Norwich at the end of the month, to help local pet owners get the care for their pet, and get help paying for the vet bills, Anett Slater of Norwich told WCDO news about their effort:

The average price of gasoline at the pump in New York has increased by almost 40 cents per gallon in the last week, reaching $3.36 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. Nationally, the average price of gasoline went up 51 cents per gallon, averaging $3.45 per gallon. GasBuddy attributes the spike in gas prices to the U.S. strikes on Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, they suspect that prices will continue to rise as long as the conflict is continuing.
Hartwick College in Oneonta announced that Kerry Tatlock, will be the guest speaker on April 9th at 7 pm. This annual traffic safety enforcement period will begin on Monday, March 9, and run through Tuesday, March 17.? During last year's St. Patrick's Day impaired driving enforcement operation, officers statewide arrested 1,224 people for DWI, issued 10,314 tickets for speeding and issued 55,661 tickets in total.?

Delaware County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of 43 year old Dylan Bassani of East Meredith for 2 counts of Menacing following an investigation into a complaint filed by two NYSEG Utility workers. On September 17th, NYSEG Utility workers were attempting to make electrical repairs on Turnpike Road in the Town of Meredith, they reported that they were confronted by Bassani, who is accused of displaying a shotgun in attempt to intimidate the workers. On September 19th, Deputies applied for and were granted an Extreme Risk Protection Order through Delaware County Supreme Court, the next day, Bassani was located and arrested and the firearm was recovered. Bassani was processed & was released on an appearance ticket for the Town of Meredith Court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 39 year old Ashley O'Malley of Bovina, following an investigation into a motor vehicle accident on September 18th, in Bovina Center. Deputies found that the vehicle had gone off the side of the road and came to rest overturned on a resident’s property. O'Malley appeared to be in an intoxicated state, she was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, with a BAC of 0.18% or more, Moving from Lane Unsafely and Speed not Reasonable and Prudent, O'Malley was released on appearance tickets to the Bovina Town Court at a later date.

40 year old Mark Archer of Sidney pleaded guilty to 3 counts of Sexual Abuse in Delaware County Court Thursday. Archer was indicted by a Grand Jury on 12 counts related to sexual abuse against 3 victims were less than 13 years old between 2013 and 2019 in the Village of Sidney, Archer will be sentenced to 13.5 years in state prison and 30 years of post-release supervision, he will be required to register as a sex offender after prison & he is prohibited from contacting his victims.

Wilcox was in possession of obscene sexual material of a child, the Sheriff’s Office arrested Wilcox on 1 count of Possessing an Obscene Sexual Performance by a Child, he was released on an appearance ticket and directed to return to the Town of Kortright Court at a later date.

Delaware County Business Alliance announced that Todd Pascarella has been named as the organization's new President, replacing Ray Pucci, who has retired. Pascarella has been a Delaware County Chamber & Business Alliance member for many years, and served on the board of directors for 6 years including as the Board chairman, he is also the executive director of the Catskill Revitalization Corporation, which has been recently rebuilding and restarting the Delaware & Ulster Railroad and he was co-founder of Union Grove Distillery in Arkville, and once served as the mayor of the Village of Fleischmanns.
The 1st annual Sidney Brew-to-Brew 5K on Saturday, had 180 participants finish the race and they raised about $3,000 to benefit the Uplift Collective and the Delaware Valley Humane Society. 25 year old Jon Hendley, from Oneonta, was the first male finisher and 30-year-old Lauren Castelucci of Apalachin was the first female finisher, with a time of 20:20.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a domestic dispute recently in the Town of Meredith, it was determined that the physical domestic had occurred in the presence of children where it was alleged that the suspect closed a car door on the victim’s leg with the intent to cause injury. Deputies arrested of 32-year-old Troy Ladlee for 3rd degree Assault, Menacing, and 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Ladlee was processed and was arraigned and released. Ladlee was directed to appear in the Town of Meredith Court at a later date to answer the charges.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 32 year old Joseph Amaro of Cooperstown & 43 Year Old Cricket Miller of Oxford, for charges related to a recent vehicle pursuit following an attempted traffic stop in Norwich. Amaro drove erratically, and Miller threw items at a patrol vehicle, causing several thousand dollars’ worth of damage. The pursuit ended in Ilion in Herkimer County, after Amaro’s vehicle struck a uniformed member of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, causing injuries. Amaro was charged with Obstruction, Conspiracy, Resisting Arrest, 2nd degree Assault Criminal Mischief, Unlawful Fleeing & Reckless Endangerment, as well as 74 Vehicle and Traffic Law citations, Miller was charged with Conspiracy, Criminal Mischief, Reckless Endangerment, Obstruction & Resisting Arrest, plus 8 citations for violating Vehicle & Traffic laws. Both were arraigned & remanded to the Chenango County Jail pending future court action.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 45 year old Bobbi-Jo Nye of Oneonta for Grand Larceny, following an investigation into a complaint that occurred in the Town of Oneonta where over $1000 of items were removed from the Oneonta Home Depot without payment. Nye was arrested, processed, and released on an appearance ticket returnable to the Oneonta Town Court at a later date.

Nicholas Vitale pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Oneida County Court, to attempted offering a false instrument for filing, Vitale acknowledged submitting a false form, in an attempt to stop any investigation by State Police, State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, and the Attorney General's Office, into the death of Messiah Nantwi at the Midstate Correctional Facility in March. Vitale was also sentenced on Tuesday to a $750 fine, $200 State surcharge and $50 DNA fee. He also had to agree to resign from his job.

In the Delaware County Republican Primary for the Treasurer's race, Carli Pinner defeated Ronda Williams with 56% of the vote, in the Town of Colchester, Robert Hafele will be the Republican candidate for Colchester Town Supervisor, David Rubera win the nomination in the Hancock town Supervisors race, James Ellis wins the nod in the Meredith Town Supervisors race, In the town of Sidney Board race, the nominees will be Frank Selleck & Andrew Hinkley, and for the Walton town board, the nominees will be Luis Rodriguez-Betancourt and Kevin Armstrong. In the Delaware County Republican Primary for the Treasurer's race, Carli Pinner defeated Ronda Williams with 56% of the vote, in the Town of Colchester, Robert Hafele will be the Republican candidate for Colchester Town Supervisor, David Rubera win the nomination in the Hancock town Supervisors race, James Ellis wins the nod in the Meredith Town Supervisors race, In the town of Sidney Board race, the nominees will be Frank Selleck & Andrew Hinkley, and for the Walton town board, the nominees will be Luis Rodriguez-Betancourt and Kevin Armstrong. In Chenango County, Ronald Sherman & Joel Lawrence won the Republican Party Nomination for Afton Town Board.
State Police responded to a 2-vehicle crash on State Route 11 in the town of Kirkwood. Investigators reported that Denise Ellis of Binghamton, was making a left turn when she failed to yield the right of way to a vehicle traveling north on State Route 11, the 2nd vehcile driven by 73 year old Nora Gibson of Pennsylvania, rolled as a result of the collision. Ellis was transported to Wilson Medical Center, her passenger was not injured, Gibson and a 74-year-old occupant were both transported to Wilson Medical Center. Ellis was ticketed, all injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a 1 Car Motor Vehicle Accident on County Highway 21 in the Town of Walton, they identified the driver as 75-year-old Erol Tural of Walton, Deputies charged Tural with, DWI and driving with a blood alcohol content of .08% or greater, Moving from a Lane Unsafely, Speed not Reasonable & other charges, Tural was released on appearance tickets and traffic summonses and was directed to appear in the Town of Walton Court at a later date.

State Police arrested 29 year old Daniel Nelson of Bloomville for 2nd degree Assault, after Troopers responded to a residence in Cooperstown for a report of a domestic dispute on June 22. Troopers later learned that the other person was checked out at a local hospital and was treated for broken bones stemming from injuries sustained during the argument, Nelson was arrested and later transported to the Otsego County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.

An Endicott man is facing a felony charge after allegedly stealing 27 iPhones from a FedEx facility while working for the company. Last Friday the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol responded to a larceny complaint at FedEx Freight East, at Industrial Park Drive in the Town of Kirkwood. Security at the facility advised that someone had been stealing from iPhones since April by sneaking them out of the facility in his coat pocket. After reviewing footage, 22 year old Leon Roberts of Endicott was charged with 3rd degree Grand Larceny. Roberts was arraigned at Central Arraignment Part and released with an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Kirkwood Court.

On Monday Morning, the Colchester Town Police Department, the Downsville Fire Department and Emergency Squad, responded to a reported motorcycle accident on State Highway 30 & Delaware County Highway 7. The operator of the motorcycle, a 42-year-old female, left the roadway and struck a ditch, she was ejected, sustained serious injuries and was transported by LifeNet of New York to Albany Medical Center for advanced medical care.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a stolen rental car, where the victim stated that he had rented an SUV from Enterprise, but it had been stolen by his girlfriend, Christine Turner, who took the vehicle to Rochester and would not be returning the rental. On Friday, the missing SUV was located in Binghamton, patrols attempted a traffic stop, but Turner failed to comply, she eventually stopped & was forcibly removed from the vehicle, and her passenger, Christina Yacalis, were both placed into custody. Turner was charged with Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Obstruction of Governmental Administration & Multiple traffic violations, Yacalis was charged with Criminal Possession of Controlled Substances, both were arraigned and were released on appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Maine Court & City of Binghamton Court.
State Police conducted an Underage Drinking Detail in Chenango County Thursday. All of the businesses checked were in compliance and did not sell alcohol to an underaged operative. Businesses that complied included area Mirabito Quickway stores, Stewarts Shops, Speedways & privately owned liquor stores in Norwich, & Sherburne. During these investigations, businesses are checked utilizing a Trooper in plain clothes and one or several underage operatives who cannot lie about their age or provide a false date of birth.
The State DEC announced several proposed regulation changes to streamline use and reporting of hunting tags and provide new deer hunting opportunities. First, DEC proposes a process for using electronic carcass tags for deer, bear, and turkey. Second, DEC proposes to provide a replacement regular season deer tag to youth hunters who successfully use that tag during the Youth Big Game Hunt weekend. Finally, DEC also proposes to enhance the Deer Management Assistance Program by extending the permit renewal cycle from 3 years to 5 years, More information is available at the the DEC website.

Troopers arrested 245 people for DWI and investigated 774 crashes, with three fatal crashes reported. Locally, Troopers reported 15 DWI arrests, 299 Speeding tickets, 26 Distracted Driving tickets, 126 Seat Belt violations and 31 move over law violators.

State Police Superintendent Steven James announced that a meeting was held at Troop A in Batavia regarding human trafficking & other security issues at the Northern Border. State Police officials met with those from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, the Buffalo Police Department, Erie County Sheriff's Office, Niagara Falls Police Department, and the New York State Park Police. The meeting was held in light of more trafficking issues coming across the Canadian border into the US in increasing numbers.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies received a complaint last week of property damage in the Town of Walton. Troopers determined that 27 year old Siara Mettler of Walton had unlawfully damaged a 2024 Chevrolet Trax, located at a residence on Beers Brook Road located in the Town of Walton. Mettler was charged with 1 count of Criminal Mischief, was processed & arraigned, an order of protection was issued protecting the victim from further contact. Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 47 year old Eric Bormann of Laurens, on 3 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Criminal Possession of a Firearm and Harassment. Deputies responded to a domestic dispute in the Town of Laurens, Bormann was also found to be in possession of a semi-automatic handgun without a State Pistol Permit, he was issued an Appearance Ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Laurens Town Court at a later date.
State Police reported that 3 people were transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center after a serious crash in the town of Nanticoke, at about 3:00 PM Sunday. Troopers were dispatched to Nanticoke Road and Henry M. Baldwin Street in the town of Nanticoke for an accident with injuries. An initial investigation indicates that an SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed struck a pick-up truck that was turning left onto Nanticoke Road. The SUV continued off the roadway and overturned. All three occupants of the SUV were transported by ambulance to UHS Wilson Medical Center for serious injuries. The occupant of pick-up truck was not injured. The investigation is on-going.
The State DMV is warning customers to be aware of the latest phishing scam, where bad actors seek to gain access to personal information by pretending to be from the DMV. This is the latest in a series of text message phishing schemes that DMV has warned New Yorkers to avoid. Previous scams have claimed that E-ZPass accounts were about to be suspended. DMV provides information on these phishing attacks on its website at dmv.ny.gov.

Delaware County Sheriffs Office received a report Friday of a threat made to an Insurance Company. 75 year old Robert Meredith of Andes, made multiple death threats to employees of the insurance company. Investigators found that Meredith was in possession of a semi-automatic pistol, he did not possess a State Pistol Permit. Meredith was charged with Criminal Possession of a Firearm, he was released on an appearance ticket returnable to Andes Town Court at a later date.
51 year old Cindy Manon of Margaretville pleaded guilty in Middletown Court to Driving a Motor Vehicle While Ability Impaired by Drugs. Manon was sentenced to 3 years of probation supervision, she is also required to attend a Victim Impact Panel, and her license is revoked for at least 6 months, if she violates these terms, she will be resentenced to 1 year in jail. On August 30, a State Trooper pulled over Manon, she failed the field sobriety test, a lab test showed positive results of methamphetamine and other drugs in her system.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded on September 29th, 2024, to Davenport for a report of a car into a house. 2 occupants of the house had sustained major injuries, the operator of the vehicle, 18-year-old Jayden Aviles, of Maryland, New York was impaired by Cannabis, 1 of the victims died as a result of the injuries sustained during the collision. A Delaware County Grand Jury handed down an indictment charging Aviles with Driving while Ability Impaired by Drugs, Vehicular Manslaughter & Vehicular Assault, Aviles was arrested Friday & was released but had to surrender his passport, Drivers License, he could not leave the region Aviles is scheduled to re-appear at the Delaware County Court at a later date for further Court Action.

A search of the vehicle revealed about 4 ounces of methamphetamine under a car seat where one of the 3 children present had been sitting during the traffic stop. The operator, 25 year old Lacey Brown of Binghamton, and passenger 25 year old Jacob Brown of Binghamton, were each charged with 2nd & 3rd Degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and 3 Counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Child Protective Services responded to the scene to take custody of the children until they were turned over to a trusted adult. Also seized from the traffic stop was $1,242 in US currency. Both Lacey and Jacob Brown were arraigned and remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility, where they remain in custody.
On Friday Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies observed a vehicle to be traveling at about 100 miles an hour in a 55-miles per hour zone, while passing another vehicle in the Town of Davenport. at that speed. Deputies identified the driver as 21-year-old Cash Carter of West Sayville, Deputies subsequently arrested and charged Carter with one count of Reckless driving, Speed Not Reasonable and Prudent and Obstructed View among other charges, Carter was released on traffic summonses and was directed to appear in the Town Davenport Court at a later date to answer the charges.
Delaware County Sheriff Deputies were dispatched in January to Liberty Street in Walton for a Trespass complaint, Deputies were advised by the owner of the property that 36-year-old Leanne Woolard was found in the storage area of the building but had left the area prior to patrols arrival, The owner previously reported Woolard had previously trespassed and was reported to Walton Police. An Arrest Warrant was issued for Criminal Trespass, On Friday Deputies located and arrested Woolard, she was processed and turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for Arraignment.

The Oneonta Police Department along with the New York State Police, Otsego County District Attorneys Investigator and Norfolk Southern Railway Police are investigating an incident that occurred on the railway tracks in the City of Oneonta. In the early morning hours of Sunday, March 30, 2025, an individual was found deceased on the tracks. The cause of death is still under investigation and, while foul play has not been ruled out, there were no immediate signs of criminal activity at the scene. No further information will be released as family notifications still need to be made.
40 year old Elizabeth Motts pleaded guilty to 3rd degree Burglary in Delaware County Court last week. Troopers responded to Mountainside Creamery in February in the Town of Roxbury regarding a report that several items had been stolen. Signs of forced entry were discovered. Troopers noted that a former employee had stolen copper wire months before. On February 10th, law enforcement was sent to the scrap yard for an ongoing domestic, where Motts was fighting with a male while unloading several metal sheets onto the scales that would later be confirmed to be stolen. Motts later made admissions to assisting in the burglary of Mountainside Creamery and to the transportation of the stolen metal materials to the scrap yard.

New York Attorney General Letitia James and a coalition of 19 other attorneys general today filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for illegally firing thousands of probationary federal workers, including hundreds in New York. In the last week of February, 372 federal workers had filed for unemployment in New York. More than 1,000 Department of Veterans Affairs employees nationwide were fired in February, including workers at VA medical centers in New York. In Buffalo and Syracuse, more than 100 Internal Revenue Service employees have been fired at the height of tax season. The coalition is seeking a court order to stop further mass layoffs without notice and the reinstatement of all illegally fired federal workers who have been laid off since January 20, 2025.
The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office announces the arrest of 37 year old Joseph Scianablo of Cooperstown following an investigation in to a 2023 larceny. it was discovered that Scianablo was a level 2 sex offender, who had relocated to Florida in 2023 without making the proper notifications to the New York State Sex Offender Registry, he turned himself in Wednesday to the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office on an active arrest warrant issued through the Middlefield Town Court. he was processed and was held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Arraignment.

The National Guard will be called in to protect correction officers who are currently on the job, individuals being held at Correctional Facilites as well as the surrounding communities. The Governor also directed Department of Corrections leadership and senior Administration officials to meet with leaders from the State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association to call for an end to the unlawful work stoppage. In March 2024, the union agreed to a collective bargaining agreement with the State of New York to improve working conditions for corrections officers.

State Police arrested 24 Year Old Fiona Taylor of Norwich & 47 year old Lauren McKinley of Norwich in connection with a case of animal neglect in Chenango County last month. On January 22nd, 56 animals were removed from a property on Mudge King Road in the town of North Norwich. During the execution of a search warrant, 30 horses, a pig, 7 sheep, 4 goats, 4 chickens, 7 dogs and 3 cats were in need of immediate care and were transported to various local animal rescue locations, 12 dead animals were observed on the property that included horses, goats, pigs and chickens. Taylor & McKinley have been charged with 16 counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals and 65 counts of Overdriving, Torturing and Injuring Animals; Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance Both women were issued appearance tickets and are scheduled to appear at the North Norwich Town Court on February 26th.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 31 year old Skyler Smith of East Meredith for Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On Saturday Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Smith, who was found to be in possession of an illegal switchblade knife. Smith was additionally charged for a traffic violation and was released on appearance tickets and is to appear in the Town Delhi Court at a later date to answer the said charges.

State Police arrested 21 year old Nathan Kurtz of Bainbridge for Driving While Intoxicated and Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident. Troopers responded to a report of a vehicle that was disabled on County Road 48 and that it had left the scene of an accident. Troopers determined that Kurtz had driven the vehicle impaired and damaged a yard, he was transported to the Oneonta barracks where he was evaluated by a Drug Recognition Expert. Kurtz was processed and issued appearance tickets to the Otego Town Court on October 17th.

Since May 21st, More than 700 inspections, resulting in 7,485 pounds of illegal cannabis seized, 345 stores were padlocked and 596 Notices of Violation issued. One of the stores was Sidney Exotic on Main Street, There are currently 166 legitimate adult-use retail dispensaries across the Empire State.

State Police arrested 23 year old Brandon Fancher of Cobleskill, last week, for DWI, in Oneonta. While on roving patrol during a DWI Sobriety Checkpoint, a Sergeant observed a vehicle speeding on Main Street in Oneonta and made a traffic stop, the Sergeant smelled an odor of an alcoholic beverage and observed other characteristics associated with impairment. Fancher failed a Standardized Field Sobriety Test, he was arrested, he was processed and issued appearance tickets to the Oneonta Town Court on September 3rd.
Walmart has recalled nearly 10,000 cases of apple juice sold in stores across the U.S. that were found to contain potentially harmful levels of inorganic arsenic. The recall applies to 9,535 cases of Great Value brand apple juice sold in 25 states, including New York State, as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Florida-based manufacturer Refresco Beverages voluntarily recalled the contaminated 6-packs of 8-ounce juice bottles after discovering levels of the chemical contaminant that exceeded industry standards.

State Police Troop “C” Traffic Incident Management unit in partnership with the Department of Transportation held an Operation Hard Hat enforcement in Windsor along State Highway 17 east between exits 78 and 79. In just over four hours, 75 tickets were issued, 58 for Speeding, including 1 person was observed and ticketed for traveling 92 mph in the 55 mph active work zone.

23 year old Elijah Gibson of Endicott, pleaded guilty Monday in Broome County Court to Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Gibson will spend 5 years in New York State Prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision. On December 30th, in Endicott, Gibson possessed a loaded and operable 9mm firearm. Gibson is due back in court for sentencing on September 25th.
State Police will be holding a Child Passenger Car Safety Seat Check today, as State Law requires that all children must be restrained in an appropriate child restraint system while riding in a motor vehicle until they reach their 8th birthday. Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a fatal, two car motor vehicle accident yesterday morning on State Highway 28 in the Town of Meredith. 45 year old Marsha Rotella of Delhi was traveling on State Highway 28 when she was attempted to pass a 2nd vehicle, operated by 46 year old Jamie Navarro of Pembroke Pines, Florida, an approaching, uninvolved vehicle caused Rotella to steer back into the southbound lane & she hit the Navarro vehicle, lost control, she skidded off the roadway and overturned, Rotella was ejected from the vehicle, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The U.S. Department of Labor found A.W. Stiles Contractors of McMinnville, Tennessee failed to provide 4 workers with effective fall protection, following an investigation, into a fatal fall of a worker in Smyrna, last December, The workers were replacing an aluminum standing seam roof on a building at Baillie Lumber Company, OSHA also found that A.W. Stiles did not train employees on fall hazards & respiratory hazards were not evaluated, Stiles also failed to ensure workers were medically able to use respirators. A.W. Stiles was cited for 8 violations, with a total of $83,885 in penalties.

Broome County Sheriff's deputies responded last Thursday to a report of inappropriate behavior and abuse of a juvenile female victim in the Town of Maine, where a family acquaintance had conducted several inappropriate physical and sexual interactions with a child. 74 year old Mark Turner of the Town of Maine was charged with 4 Counts of Sexual Abuse, he was arrested and taken into custody without incident and was being held for Court action at the Broome County Correctional Facility.

39 year old Timothy Jarczynski of Maryland pleaded guilty to DWI in Davenport Town Court & was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge. On September 28, 2022, a citizen called 911 to report an erratic driver on State Route 23, after following Jarczynski for approximately 10 minutes, he crashed into a ditch where a State Trooper determined that Jarczynski was impaired at the time of the accident. Jarczynski was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge and his license was revoked, he was ordered to attend a victim impact panel and successfully complete the impaired driver’s program, If he obtains a driver’s license, he will be required to install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle he owns or operates, he could still face 1 year in jail if he violates any of these conditions.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 23 year old Jarrett Griffin of Walton on an arrest warrant issued out of the Town of Tompkins Court. On April 4th, Deputies located Griffin and arrested him, Griffin is accused of making threats over texts and Facebook, he's been charged with 3 counts of Aggravated Harassment, he was processed, and turned over to the custody of the Delaware County Jail for future court action.

45 year old Katrina Lott of West Edmeston pleaded guilty to Driving While Intoxicated and was sentenced to 3 years of probation, in Deposit Town Court last week. On June 13, 2023, Lott was driving on County Route 8, when she lost control of her vehicle and drove into the ditch. A State Trooper responded to the crash scene and determined that Lott was likely under the influence of alcohol when open containers were spotted in the vehicle. Lott had a BAC of .16% - two times the legal limit.

The Acco Brands plant in Sidney is being sold, Acco Officials said that the company signed a non-binding letter of intent to sell the building to a renewable energy company, if the building is sold in 2024, operations would continue in Sidney throughout much of 2024. CONVALT of Watertown is believed to be the purchaser as they announced on their website their plans to build their main factory, in Sidney with a targeted date of commercial operation in the 1st quarter of 2025.
24-year-old Kelvin Marfo of Delhi was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operator of a Motor Vehicle, plus other charges following an accident investigation. On April 6th Deputies responded to an iPhone Crash Detection for a motor vehicle accident on State Highway 28 in the Town of Meredith. Deputies found the motor vehicle accident, 2 of the occupants were transported for non-life-threatening injuries to a local hospital, while 2 others were treated by EMS. Marfo’s driving privileges were suspended for Failing to Answer a Summons, Marfo was issued an Appearance Ticket to appear before the Town of Meredith Court at a later date.
Last Wednesday, Oneonta Police Department was called to investigate a reported gunshot wound by A.O. Fox hospital emergency room staff. Officers learned that 51-year-old John Walley of Otego was transported to the hospital by a third party in a private vehicle, which left before police arrived. Walley was interviewed briefly and stated that he was on Chestnut Street when he was injured by a bullet, no evidence at the scene was found, he was re-interviewed & has refused to cooperate. The case will be closed but may be re-opened should additional information be received and the victim agree to cooperate. Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 18 year old Steven Cook of Vestal for Attempted Use of a Child in a Sexual Performance, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Cook is accused of soliciting pornographic images from a 12-year-old girl. Deputies responded last week to a 911 report from a 12-year-old victim in the Town of Union, who informed investigators that she had been talking and exchanging explicit messages with Cook where he allegedly attempted to initiate sexual contact with the minor and attempting to solicit pornographic images from her. During the execution of a search warrant, Cook was uncooperative with investigators, but was eventually taken into custody, Cook remains in the custody of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office awaiting arraignment.
Broome County District Attorney's office announced that 38 year old Andrew Bethune of Binghamton was sentenced in Broome County Court to 4 years in New York State Prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. On January 25, 2023, authorities conducted a search of Bethune's apartment located at 111 Oak Street, Apartment 4 in Binghamton, they seized cocaine, fentanyl & methamphetamines, plus packaging materials, a digital scale and $5,481 in cash from suspected drug sales.
National Baseball Hall of Fame Chairman of the Board Jane Forbes Clark announced that a Hank Aaron statue will be unveiled at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown on May 23. The bronze representation of Aaron will be installed on the first floor of the Museum. Aaron was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1982 following a 23-year big league career with the Braves and Brewers, Aaron launched his 715th career home run 50 years ago today. A raccoon tested positive for rabies in the town of Meredith. This is the first laboratory confirmed positive case of rabies in Delaware County in 2024. A rabid raccoon entered a cow barn in the town of Meredith and attacked and bit a cow. The raccoon was sent for testing to the State Department of Health Wadsworth Laboratory. The cow that was attacked and bitten has been euthanized. There were no human exposures, and no other domestic animals were exposed to the rabid raccoon. Brian Mulder of Union Grove Distillery in Arkville, will appear on Discovery Channel’s Moonshiners: Master Distiller program. 3 distillers from across the United States compete to become Master Distiller. The Susquehanna SPCA & the Otsego County Sheriff's Department responded to the Town of Laurens for the report of a possible dog-abandonment case. Deputies discovered 5 dogs deceased in garbage bags and 4 who appeared to have abandoned, the 4 were removed & are currently being cared for at the Susquehanna SPCA, the 5 deceased animals were brought to Cornell University for forensic examinations. The Sheriff's Office is looking for the owner of the dogs, the investigation is continuing. Those who would like to donate the the SPCA to assist with the cost of this type of rescue can go to sqspca.org to make a donation.

Delaware County Sheriff's office arrested 45- year-old James Simmons of Canandaigua for DWI and other charges following a traffic stop on February 11th. Deputies were patrolling on State Highway 17 in the Town of Colchester and observed a vehicle without a front license plate, a traffic stop was conducted & Simmons was charged with DWI, Aggravated DWI, Aggravated Unlicensed Operator and Open Container of an alcoholic beverage, Simmons was released on tickets returnable to the Town of Colchester Court at a later date to answer the charges.

On December 11th, Deputies responded to a one car motor vehicle accident on Scotch Mountain Road in the Town of Delhi, Deputies determined that Blazek was impaired by drugs at the time of the accident. Deputies arrested Blazek last week following the results of a blood test, for driving while ability impaired by drugs, Speed not reasonable and prudent and unsafe tires, she was released on tickets returnable to the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

State Police responded early Monday morning to a domestic dispute at 10 Debra Lee Drive, Apalachin. Troopers and EMS personnel provided lifesaving treatment to an injured male and female at the scene. The female died as a result of injuries sustained during the domestic dispute. The injured male was transported to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, where he currently remains in stable condition. This incident remains under investigation.

State Police saw an increase in female and minority candidates compared to the last processing weekend. The number of female candidates increased by 30%, the number of Black candidates increased by 35%, and the number of Hispanic candidates increased by 13%. State Police are accepting applications for Entrance Examination until March 4th & individuals can take the test through March 17th, more information is available at joinstatepolice.ny.gov.

Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti announced today a county-wide diversion program for those suffering from substance use disorders, in partnership with the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and Helio Health. Starting February 19th, qualifying accused individuals being arraigned at The Centralized Arraignment Part of the Broome County Court System will have the opportunity to be part of the new diversion program, Motivation to Change, where upon acceptance into the program, the individual will be directly transported to Helio Health for placement into detox or inpatient residential treatment. The Sheriff’s Department has agreed to transport program participants directly to Helio Health, where the individual will be assessed and the appropriate treatment plan would be recommended.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 30 year old Sophie Shalhoub of Meredith, for criminal possession of a weapon, following a domestic incident on January 31st. Deputies responded to the incident, during the investigation, a handgun was discovered belonging to Shalhoub, who did not possess a New York State Pistol Permit. Shalhoub was arrested & was released on an appearance ticket, returnable at a later date to the Meredith Town Court.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office announced that an Arrest Warrant issued by the County Probation Department has resulted in the arrest of 20 year old Timothy Taylor of Starlight, Pennsylvania. On Saturday February 2nd, Deputies were advised by Hancock Police that they had Taylor in custody for unrelated charges and Taylor had an outstanding Probation Absconder Warrant from the Delaware County Probation Department. Taylor was subsequently arrested & was brought to Delaware County Centralized Arraignment to answer his charges.

71 year old Rudolph Pacheco of Staten Island, was convicted in Delaware County Court of Vehicular Manslaughter, Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident, and Aggravated DWI, and was sentenced to state prison. Pacheco admitted to drinking beer and other alcoholic beverages for 6 to 7 hours before driving away, with a BAC over .18, he struck a pedestrian & admitted that he knew the pedestrian was killed, and he left the scene. Pacheco was sentenced to 3 to 9 years in state prison for Vehicular Manslaughter, 2 to 6 years for Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident; and a 1-year conditional discharge for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, the sentences would run concurrently, other fines were also imposed fines totaling $3,820 and his license was revoked, he will need to install an ignition interlock device if he is ever permitted to drive again, he was sent to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to begin serving his sentence.
42 year old Edna Cering of Sidney entered a guilty plea to Criminal Trespass in Delaware County Court. On August 5, 2023, Sidney Police received reports of individuals squatting in another individual’s home, as police arrived, 2 individuals ran into the woods behind it, 1 of the suspects was Cering, she appeared in County Court & was sentenced to a 1 year conditional discharge, a fine, and a mandatory state surcharge.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office announced that 34 year-old Krystynne Bliss of Sidney is facing a charge of Promoting Prison Contraband, On January 19th, members of the Delaware County Sheriffs Office Criminal Investigation Division received information that Bliss entered the Correctional Facility while in possession of with Schedule 3 controlled substance, Bliss was arraigned at the Delaware County Central Arraignment court and returned to the corrections facility on an earlier unrelated charge.
State Police at Troop C responded Monday Afternoon to assist the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department at a residence on Homer Avenue in the City of Cortland. Gunfire was exchanged inside the residence. A person inside the residence sustained injuries and was transported to Upstate Medical Center. No officers were injured during the incident. The investigation is ongoing, there is no danger to the public.

The Guthrie Clinic will take over operations at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton Thursday. The take over includes all of Lourdes facilities, including the new clinic at the Oakdale Commons, a new name for the facility will be announced Thursday.

3 fire departments responded to a structure fire at 936 Houghtaling Hollow in the town of Meredith Tuesday afternoon. A family of 5 was displaced by the trailer fire. Meridale Firefighters were assisted by the Franklin & Delhi Fire Department, no injuries were reported.
A special election to pick a successor to George Santos, will be held on February 13th, according to the Governor's office. Santos was the 6th person expelled from the US House of Representatives in the country's history Former area Congressman Tom Suozzi may be the Democratic Party choice, he had served that district for 6 years before making a run from Governor. Several Republicans are vying to keep the seat Republican after Santos's ouster, he was expelled last week following a scandal-plagued tenure in Congress and a looming criminal trial.
The State Health Department reported that flu cases rose by over 25% in the last week and hospitalizations have surged by 30%. Most of the cases have been reported in Western New York, especially in Erie, Niagara, and Chautauqua Counties. In the last recorded week, there were more than 4,000 cases reported in New York State, there has also been a surge in the respiratory virus known as RSV.

Law fled the scene while Loveless, who was thrown 180 feet down the shoulder, suffering serious injuries. Law then told police he hit a deer with his truck instead. Law pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a firearm and attempted leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident.

State Police & other state agencies responded to a commercial vehicle crash at I-88 in Duanesburg, Tuesday morning. The investigation has determined a tractor-trailer traveling exited the road and traveled down a steep ravine, carrying multiple large cylinders containing compressed natural gas. The driver was removed and transported to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries and is currently listed in critical condition. I-88 was closed between exit 24 and exit 25 for the investigation & clean up, there were no home or business evacuations & there was no fire or explosion as a result of this crash. The name of the driver will not be released at this time. The investigation into the cause of this crash is ongoing.

The New York State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for September 2023. The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 3.9% in August to 4.0% in September, locally Chenango County reported 2.9% unemployment, Delaware County 3.4% & Otsego County had 3.0% in September.

Local government sales tax collections in New York state totaled $5.9 billion in the third calendar quarter of 2023 (July - September), an increase of 3.6%, or more than $205 million, compared to the same period last year, according to a report released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. On May 4th, 2022, 2 arrest warrants were issued by the Walton Town Court, On October 11th Deputies arrested and charged Bennett on both arrest warrants, he was held at the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await centralized arraignment.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office announced that The driver who was killed in a 1-vehicle crash on Route 8 in Bridgewater has been identified as 36-year-old Edward Cuevas, of Oneonta. Cuevas was driving on State Route 8 at about 8:15 on September 25 when the crash occurred, the cause remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Oneida County Sheriff's Office at 315-765-2737.

The Broome County District Attorney's office announced that DeJoghn Llamas pleaded guilty to Attempted Assault and was sentenced to 7 years in state prison and 5 years of post-release supervision. Llamas admitted that he slashed a 61-year-old woman in the face with a knife during an argument at a Binghamton residence in October of 2022.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a 1 car motor vehicle accident with injuries on September 26th, where the vehicle was found to have rolled over and the operator was found to be suspected of operating the vehicle in an intoxicated state. 19 year old Samantha Hanneman of New Jersey was charged with driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration over .08, Failure to Keep Right, Move from Lane Unsafely, No Seatbelt, and Speed not Reasonable and Prudent. Hanneman was released to a family member on appearance tickets and directed to appear at the Town of Middletown court at a later date to answer the charges.

Deputies arrested Atanga for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, along with other charges, he was released on the traffic tickets and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Delhi Court at a later date to answer the charges.

Governor Hochul announced more than $516 million in assistance for rehabilitating or replacing bridges and culverts all over the state. In the Southern Tier Region - $52.8 million, with $2.783 million to Chenango County for the replacement of the Blanding Road bridge over the Chenango River, $1.5 million to Chenango County for the replacement of the Route 10 culvert carrying the tributary to Genegantslet Creek, $5.3 million to Delaware County for the replacement of the Route 206 bridge over Spring Brook & $1.1 million to the Village of Stamford for the replacement of the River Street culvert carrying the tributary to the West Branch Delaware River, Delaware County.
The Broome County District Attorney's Office announced that Noe Casas-Aguilar of Binghamton & Johnathon Aldrich of Binghamton were sentenced to 14 years in State prison, with 5 years of post release supervision. Casas-Aguilar pleaded guilty to 1st Degree Burglary & 1st Degree Robbery, for the July 31st, 2022 burglary where he & Aldrich invaded a home on Bevier Street, threatened the occupants and stole money and handguns.
Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 24 year old Jamie Sophie of Unadilla after an investigation of a motor vehicle accident on June 25th on State Highway 28 in the Town of Meredith. Deputies found a vehicle left the roadway and collided with a front porch of a residence, Sophie had been operating a motor vehicle in an intoxicated state, he was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, aggravated DWI, moving from lane unsafely, and inadequate brakes, Sophie was ordered to appear in the Town of Meredith Court at a later date.

Deputies found that the vehicle’s registration was suspended and Olsen had a suspended license, Olsen was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle while the Registration was suspended, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, driving without headlights, among other charges, Olsen was released on appearance tickets for Village of Sidney Court at a later date.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 33 year old Brandon Cullipher Of Plymouth On May 31, for DWI, Driving with a .08% BAC or Greater, and Aggravated DWI for driving while a child under the age of 16 is in a motor vehicle. Cullipher was observed driving a vehicle with no affixed inspection sticker on the windshield, he is also accused of driving the vehicle with an open container, with passengers under the age of 16. Cullipher was taken into custody, processed and released on an appearance ticket, to appear in the Town of North Norwich Court at a later date.
On Thursday, June 29, at 9:00AM, the Greater Oneonta Historical Society and the Oneonta Job Corps Academy will unveil a historical marker for Homer Folks Tuberculosis Hospital at the corner of West Street and Homer Folks Drive. The marker recognizes Homer Folks Tuberculosis Hospital, which was a state hospital that treated hundreds of TB patients between 1935 and 1973. The hospital grounds are now occupied primarily by the Oneonta Job Corps Academy campus, along with several other entities.

The indictments against Hahn accuse him of possessing fentanyl with intent to sell, he was released in his own recognizance, he must not possess or consume any illegal drugs or alcohol and he must check in with the Delaware County Probation Department weekly.

20 year old Brandon Navas of East Meredith was sentenced to 2 to 6 years in State Prison after admitting to violating the terms and conditions of his probation sentence. Navas was previously sentenced to a 5-year term of probation for his 2022 Conviction of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, he is accused of committing a Burglary in Roxbury while serving the sentence, he appeared in Delaware County Court last week and admitted to violating probation, he was sentenced & was remanded to the custody of the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending his transfer to state custody.

Broome County Sheriff's Office is partnering with the Southern Tier chapter of the American Red Cross for a Blood Drive today at the Sheriff's Office in honor of the late Broome County Deputy Kevin Tarsia, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. on July 4th, 2002, Deputy Tarsia was killed in the line of duty during an encounter with suspects from a firearms burglary at Grange Hall Park in Kirkwood. 32 year-old Courtni Baker of Sidney pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court today to charges relating to a February 15th accident, where Baker struck 14-year-old Anielle “AK” McEwan-Lomnicki as she was walking home from Sidney middle school. 49-year-old Hasaan Coston of Binghamton was found guilty in Broome County Court on 3 felony drug possession charges related to two separate raids by members of Broome County's Special Investigations Unit Task Force. Officers executed the 1st search warrant on July 29, 2021, and recovered cocaine, crack cocaine, $1200 cash and drug paraphernalia, at the 2nd search on August 4, 2022, in Endicott, officers seized more cocaine, crack cocaine and $1260 cash, Coston could face over 25 years in jail upon sentencing later this year.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies, State Police and the Village of Delhi Police Department, responded May 14th to a report of a Physical Domestic in Progress in the Town of Meredith. 35-year-old James Twito of Meredith, allegedly engaged another person in a physical domestic dispute where he is accused of obstructing the breathing of the victim, he was charged with Unlawful Imprisonment, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, 3rd degree Assault & Criminal Mischief , Twito was arraigned in the Town of Delhi Court where he was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $5,000 cash or $10,000 in secured bond.
The New York Farm Bureau announced support today for Governor Hochul's request to the federal government to expedite work visas for migrants who have been properly processed and who want to work on farms in New York State. There is a lengthy tradition of migrant workers on New York State farms, Farm Bureau officials stated that the State Department of Agriculture and Markets along with Cornell's Agricultural Workforce Development program are working to rectify the situation, the latest action would just be a temporary one and Washington officials must act to come up with a permanent solution to all angles of the immigration issue.
The State Department of Health today issued updated advisories for the consumption of fish from waterbodies in the State. The most notable update this year is the release of a new Catskill Region advisory, which includes the Cannonsville & Pepacton reservoirs in Delaware County, The Advisory is for a “Sensitive population”, which includes people who may bear children and children under 15; the fish in question include rainbow, brook & brown trout. Otsego County Sheriff's Office aarested 28 year old Joseph Spataro of Otego following a welfare check investigation in the Town of Oneonta. Spataro was chargeedd with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, DWI, Unlicensed Operator, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs & Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a mtoro vehicle, Spataro is accused of operating a motor vehicle while impaired and in possession of drugs, he was issued an appearance ticket for the Oneonta Town Court on a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded May 10th to the Town of Meredith to assist US Homeland Security Units with the apprehension of 48 year old Charles Bodie of Meredith, who was wanted on an active US Federal Court Warrant for the Sexual Exploitation of a Child. Deputies and Homeland Security conducted surveillance of property in Meredith where Bodie had been living, on May 11th, they arrested Bodie on the warrant, he was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility, where he was to be held indefinitely. Bodie was scheduled to be transported to the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York at a later date for arraignment on the Sexual Exploitation of a Child charge, if found guilty, Bodie could face 15 to 30 years in prison.
The Broome County Sheriff's Office announced that a stolen vehicle traffic stop in the Town of Kirkwood led to an arrest on multiple felony drug charges last week. On May 7th, a deputy identified a vehicle as stolen from Binghamton, after stopping the vehicle and confirming its status, Officers seized 11.3 grams of cocaine, a digital scale and $1,423 in cash, 38 year old Jorge Cortina of Binghamton was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell & Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, he was processed and issued an appearance ticket to answer for his charges on June 7, 2023 in the Town of Kirkwood Court.

An unvaccinated dog and 1 person were exposed to the rabid skunk, the dog had to be euthanized because it had not been vaccinated. A Broome County judge on Friday has sentenced Jason Johnson of Nineveh to 60 years in jail for the attempted murder of Trooper Rebecca Seager in June 2021, Johnson was found guilty on a number of felony counts last year in Broome County Court for shooting Trooper Seager in the hip in the Town of Colesville, Johnson was taken into custody following a 21-hour manhunt.
