Norwich Police Department conducted a routine traffic stop on Rexford Street Monday that led to the arrest of 59 year old William Hamilton & 36 year old Heather Pollock of Norwich, as well as the seizure of a significant quantity of illegal narcotics. Hamilton was also wanted on an active arrest warrant, he was charged for that & several counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance & tampering with physical Evidence. Pollock was also charged with Criminal Possession of a controlled substance & tampering with evidence. Police seized Fentanyl, Methamphetamine, and Crack Cocaine. Hamilton and Pollock were arraigned and were released on their own recognizance pending further court proceedings. The investigation is ongoing.

Broome County Sheriff’s Road Patrol responded Thursday night to a dispute near the Speedway gas station on Route 12 in the Town of Chenango, deputies located a motorcycle still running, which had struck a fence and became disabled. Witnesses reported that the driver left the scene and was hiding nearby, Deputies located 46 year old David Osborn of Frankfort, he was transported to UHS Wilson Hospital for treatment of his injures, failed a sobriety test, he became uncooperative with hospital staff and Officers, Osborn had a suspended driver’s license, no motorcycle license and multiple outstanding warrants, the motorcycle was stolen from Binghamton. Osborn was charged with DWI, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle & 7 traffic violations, he was ordered to appear in Town of Chenango Court following his discharge from medical care.

The State Health Department reported the 1st cases of the West Nile virus has been reported in Onondaga County. The individual is an elderly adult from Cicero, who was hospitalized but has since been discharged and is recovering. Additionally, the first Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus detection in mosquitoes this season has also been reported in Cicero. General Clinton Canoe Regatta Champs and 10 New York Canoe Racers will be competing in the AuSable River Canoe Marathon, in Michigan on July 26-27. 2025 General Clinton Canoe Regatta and 2024 Triple Crown of Canoe Racing Champs: Guillaume Blais, of Quebec, and Mike Davis, of Homer, Michigan are considered among the favorites. Chenango County Department of Public Works announced that County route 37 in the Town of Guilford between Blower Road & Route 8 is closed starting today, to replace a culvert. The project will take between 1 to 2 weeks, the traveling public is asked to seek alternate routes, local traffic will be allowed to get to & from their homes. State Police arrested 21 year old Ryan Morris of Pennsville, New Jersey for Driving While Intoxicated and Petit Larceny. A Trooper was dispatched to the town of Caroline for a report of a person on a side by side, stealing road signs, The Trooper located Morris, who failed the Field Sobriety Tests, he was processed, his B.A.C was .17%. He was issued appearance tickets to the Caroline Town Court on August 25, 2025.

46 year old John Jaromack Jr, formerly of Franklin, appeared in Delaware County Court Monday, he was sentenced to a total of 10 years in State Prison to be followed by 10 years of post-release supervision. Jaromack pleaded guilty to 2 counts of Criminal Sexual Act in August in Delaware County Court, he admitted to sexually abusing a minor child. The court also issued orders of protection in favor of the two children for the next 13 years. The defendant will be mandated to register as a sex offender upon being released from prison.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced today that millions in federal funding will be available for New Yorkers through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program this winter:

The money will help thousands of households across the state afford their heating bills and make cost-effective home energy repairs this winter. She is also calling for additional funding for LIHEAP to make sure that as many qualifying families as possible can get the assistance they need throughout the coming months.

The Tompkins County Sheriff's Office reported that a Binghamton man who led police agencies on a manhunt, was taken into custody today. Christopher Borges of Binghamton led police on a manhunt covering several hours, he was located and taken into custody around 10:07 am. on Deerfield Lane in the Town of Caroline without incident. Charges against Borges include kidnapping, robbery and criminal contempt.

52 year old Shelly Genung of Sidney appeared in Delaware County Court Tuesday and pleaded guilty to 1 count of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a child in the vehicle. Genung admitted that she was operating the motor vehicle on a public highway in the Village of Sidney, while she was intoxicated by alcohol, with a 6-year-old child in the vehicle, she will be sentenced to 5 years of felony probation supervision and required to comply with any substance abuse treatment recommendations & successfully complete the Impaired Driving Program and attend a Victim Impact Panel, her license will be revoked, and she will be required to install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle she owns or operates.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 45 year old Danielle Ashdown of Binghamton during the intake process at the Broome County Correctional Facility. On October 6th, Ashdown was arrested by Binghamton Police for a conditional discharge. A routine search uncovered 2 clear bags hidden on her person, containing methamphetamine and fentanyl, they also recovered 2 other substances. Ashdown was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & 3 Counts of Promoting Prison Contraband, she was remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility.

The Chenango County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting will be held today at Fred’s Inn, in Norwich, beginning at 6:00 pm. Members, farmers, and legislators will be present to discuss the future of agriculture & how green energy is affecting production.

Hartwick College officials announced that they are hosting 2 Candidate Forums prior to Election Day. The Hartwick Institute of Public Service announced that the forum for today features candidates running for election in Otsego County, on Wednesday, November 1, the institute will host candidates running for election in the City of Oneonta. Both events are scheduled for 6:00 to 8:00 PM in the Shineman Chapel House on the Hartwick College campus.

The Otsego County Department of Health reports that a cat tested positive for rabies in the Village of Cherry Valley on October 24, 2023. This cat belonged to a feral cat colony on Montgomery Street in the Village of Cherry Valley. The chance of rabies in other cats in the colony is very high, anyone who may have had contact with the cats should call the Health Department at 607-547-4230

American Red Cross Blood Drives will continue today. 1 Blood Drive will be held at the St. Mary's Church on Elm Street in Cooperstown, from 12:30 TO 5:30 PM. A blood drive will also be held at the Delaware Academy in Delhi from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, appointments can be made with the red cross app, at redcrossblood.org or by calling 1-800 RED CROSS.

State police have cancelled an adult Amber Alert, as the elderly missing person has been located. 92 year old Beverly Cleveland was in good health at a motel in Owego& & she has been turned over to family members. Cleveland was reported missing over the weekend from the Town of Caroline in Tompkins County, she reportedly became disoriented while driving to her home in Trumansburg.

Governor Cuomo today announced that $20 million dollars will be awarded statewide to replace residential drinking water lead service lines as part of New York's Clean Water Infrastructure Act of 2017. The Lead Service Line Replacement Program awards locally include the City of Binghamton, which will receive $663,000.

Governor Cuomo announced a new public awareness campaign on the fentanyl crisis, which consists of ads about the dangers of fentanyl, providing safety tips on prevention, and offering guidance on how to safely respond to a fentanyl overdose. The campaign will include banners on social media, Advertisements on all forms of mass transit, and ads in shopping area and laundromats in communities throughout the state. Each advertisement will direct people to visit CombatAddiction.ny.gov or call the state's HOPEline number for help, at 1-877-8-HOPENY (1-877-846-7369).

The Village of Sidney is reminding Main Street area property owners & residents to NOT use salt or salt-like products on the newly poured concrete this winter. Sand is available by request to building & businesses owners or caretakers to throw sand on any snow this winter, as the rock salt could be harmful to the new concrete. State Police arrested 35 year old Justin Mancini of Endicott, for 3 counts of possessing a sexual performance by a child, he was taken into custody & during the investigation, Police received information that Mancini had placed a Craigslist ad to babysit children. State Police are requesting that anyone who used Mancini for childcare, answered his ad, or has any information that Mancini was hired to babysit, contact the BCI at 754-3854.

State Senator Fred Akshar will be visiting classrooms in 3 more schools Today as part of his new district-wide "Akshar All-Star" student recognition program. Akshar will visit the Tioga Central High School in Barton, The Vestal Middle School Library & at 2:00pm, the Oxford High School

State Troopers in Oneonta arrested 25-year-old Cory Merchant of Sidney for 3rd degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation and on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Town of Amsterdam Court for Failure to Pay Fine.  The arrest resulted from a vehicle and traffic stop on State Route 23 in Davenport, Merchant was issued uniform traffic tickets returnable to the Town of Davenport Court for January 8th, he was then turned over to State police in Cobleskill to be transported to the Town of Amsterdam Court for arraignment on the Bench Warrant.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation to make the unlicensed practice of law a class E felony. Cuomo said that for most professions licensed by the State, unlicensed practice constitutes a class E felony but under current law, unlicensed practice of law constitutes a misdemeanor. The new law takes effect November 1, 2013.

The state Education Department released the list of 16 “persistently dangerous schools” & the Sidney middle school made the list again, the education department stated in their report that stated that schools are placed on the list when there are persistent reports of violent and disruptive incidents. Other upstate schools on the list were in Peekskill, Caroline, Berkshire, Greenburgh; South Seneca and Andover.

Chobani CEO Hamdi Ulukaya will appear twice on NBC news programming today, he appeared on the “Today” show this morning, and will appear on “Rock Center” this evening.  Ulukaya started Chobani in Edmeston after buying a shut down factory in 2005, he credits his employees & the dairy farmers of the region for their success:

Ulukaya said that the company’s employment has grown by large numbers in the last few years, a new factory is opening in Idaho shortly to help service West Coast demands, and they opened a retail store in New York City earlier this year.

A New Quinnipiac Poll released Wednesday asked New York registered voters on the controversial natural gas drilling issue.  44% are in favor of drilling because of economic benefits and 42 percent opposed it due to environmental concerns.  Voters favored a tax on gas drilling companies by a 54% to 32% margin, and believe 78% believe that drilling will create jobs while only 15% believe that it would not create jobs.  50% of those polled also said that Hydro-fracking will damage the environment, 17% believe that hydrofracking would not damage the environment.

Former New York state comptroller Alan Hevesi has been released from prison after serving 20 months for officials misconduct.  Hevesi was convicted for his leading role in a “Pay to Play” scheme while overseeing the state’s pension fund.  Hevesi had served at the Mid-State Correctional Facility in Oneida County and was released after he was granted parole in court in November.  Hevesi was originally sentenced to from 1 to 4 years in prison for his guilty plea in 2010.

24-year-old Jaclyn Wesley  of Binghamton was indicted by a Broome County grand jury  on charges of vehicular manslaughter.  Wesley was arrested after she drove her SUV into the Chenango River from  I-88 in the town of Fenton on may 20th 2011, passengers Robert Moorehead,  Robert Marshall, and Carri Michalski were all killed in the crash.  Wesley was originally charged with 3 counts of first-degree vehicular manslaughter and 7 other charges, including DWI.

Governor Cuomo announced $1 million in federal funding to enhance the competitiveness of New York's agricultural products. The funding will support the research, development and promotion of specialty crops including fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, and nursery crops, and includes $200,000 to help support the growth of the state's wine, beer, and spirits industry.
