104-year-old Frank Doolittle of Bainbridge will be presented with the Congressional Gold Medal at a ceremony in Sidney on Saturday, Veteran’s day. Doolittle will receive his medal Saturday at 2:00 PM in a ceremony at the Thomas Z. Fagan Municipal airport from Congresswoman Claudia Tenney; Doolittle served in World War 2 in the US Civil Air Patrol.
State Police responded to a report of 3 people attempting to burglarize a home in the Town of Union. Responding troopers observed the reported vehicle & conducted a traffic stop. Police arrested 20 year old Alfred Irish of Endicott, 20 year old Anthony Bennett of Apalachin and 20 year old Vincent Pitts of Vestal, were arrested on Burglary Charges, they were arraigned in the Town of Union Court and remanded to the Broome County Jail with no bail set. Their next court dates are pending.
State Senator Fred Akshar joined members of the Norwich Fire Department and Norwich Mayor Christine Carnrike to announce approximately $290,000 in State and Municipal Facilities Program (SAM) funding to purchase two new ambulances for the City of Norwich. The two ambulances were purchased this summer and have already been put into use, rotating into service to replace two older ambulances. Norwich Fire Department covers the City and Town of Norwich and the towns of Plymouth, North Norwich and Preston.

State Police Superintendent George Beach has promoted Captain William McEvoy to the rank of Major and has assigned him to the position of Troop Commander at Troop C in Sidney. Major McEvoy started his career in 1984 as a trooper and was first assigned to Troop C; in 1989 McEvoy was promoted to Investigator and assigned to the Drug Enforcement Task Force in New York City. In 1991, he returned to Troop C, where he spent the majority of his years with the State Police, his most recent assignment was BCI Captain.
The Delaware County Board of Elections announced that Friday October 13th, is the last day to postmark a registration form to vote in the November 7th General Election. Also, October 13th is the last day for the Board of Elections to receive an enrollment change to be effective for 2018. In Delaware County this year, Offices up for Election include Supreme Court Justice, County Sheriff, County Clerk, County Treasurer and many town offices. On Saturday October 14th Delaware County Public Health and the Village of Sidney Police will be holding a free Car Seat Safety Event at McDonalds in Sidney, from 9AM-12PM. The free event will educate parents and caregivers on proper car seat installation and use. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the appointment of Pete Lopez to become Regional Administrator for Region 2. Lopez will oversee environmental protection efforts in New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Lopez has served as a member of the New York State Assembly since 2007.
The 22nd Annual Grand Finale Cruise In will be held at the Sidney Municipal Airport this Sunday, in conjunction with the Fagan Flyers fly in breakfast. State Police CNET members conducted a vehicle stop on McKinley Avenue in Endicott, & located an active one-pot methamphetamine lab with associated reagents and precursors for manufacturing methamphetamine in the vehicle. Police arrested 40-year-old Heather Callahan of Endicott, 53-year-old David Decker, of Vestal, 49 year old Christopher Decker, of Binghamton, & 22-year-old David Decker of Endicott, on a variety of drug charges. Police seized an active one pot methamphetamine lab, methamphetamine oil, & various other items used to manufacture methamphetamine, plus lab equipment, Marihuana smoking devices, Heroin, & Methamphetamine. All 4 were arraigned & were remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.
A memorial service will be held for former Masonville Town Supervisor & Sidney Auto Body founder Jack Thomas, Saturday at 1:00 PM at the Sidney United Methodist church on Liberty Street in Sidney. Thomas died Tuesday at Bassett hospital in Cooperstown, he was 84.
The Fagan Flyers will hold a Pancake Breakfast at the Sidney Municipal Airport Sunday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Arts & craft vendors, live music, face painting and demonstrations by LifeNet are also scheduled.

New York City will buy homes and businesses in flood zones in the watershed areas. The one-two punch of tropical storms Irene and Lee in 2011 has prompted an additional $70 million of spending by the city to combat flood hazards. City officials said the programs would protect the water while helping the towns that participate. The city agency will earmark at least $15 million, through 2017, to buy vulnerable homes and businesses, including those not eligible under the FEMA flood buyout program. The city also will provide $17 million to the Catskill Watershed Corporation, which implements protection programs, for flood hazard mitigation in those communities.
The U.S. House of Representatives adopted an amendment introduced by area Congressman Chris Gibson that increases funding to combat the heroin epidemic plaguing Upstate New York communities. The amendment to the Fiscal Year 2015 Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriations Bill increases the account for the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force by $4 million. The Task Force supports multi-jurisdictional investigations to target drug traffickers.
