The Cyclosporiasis outbreak is impacting 31 states, including New York, it is caused by a parasite that triggers a severe gastrointestinal illness, The CDC & the Food and Drug Administration are actively investigating the surge in the number of cases, about 3,000 people are sick with about 85 hospitalizations nationwide. The Potential Food Sources are lettuce or salad greens, a specific grower or distributor of the affected foods has not yet been identified, Symptoms include nausea & vomiting, those with symptoms are advised to contact their health care provider, the illness can be treated with antibiotics.

Governor Hochul signed an executive order establishing a statewide moratorium on the permitting and construction of large new data centers. The freeze will temporarily stop massive, facilities for up to a year while the state develops updated environmental, energy, and community standards. The ban applies to new data center facilities that require 50 Mega Watts or more of energy. however smaller data centers used by hospitals, universities, and financial back-office services are exempt.

An Open House is being held today in Norwich regarding the 5 Court Street Construction project. The Open house will be held until 7:00 PM at the Board of Supervisors Chambers, county officials and engineers will be available to answer questions.

State Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying an individual in connection with an assault, On June 30, 2026, at approximately 11:35 a.m., at the Dollar General on State Route 12 in the town of Norwich. The investigation determined that a white male approached another male as he was exiting the store, yelled at him, and punched him in the face, causing the victim to fall to the ground and strike his head. The victim sustained a laceration above his eyebrow and was treated at the scene by members of Norwich Ambulance. He declined transportation to a hospital. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 6 feet tall, with a muscular build and short light brown hair, the suspect left in a blue SUV. State Police will increase patrols to crack down on drunk and drugged driving and other traffic infractions over the Fourth of July holiday, through Sunday night. Drivers can expect to encounter sobriety checkpoints and DWI patrols, Troopers will also be looking for motorists who are using their phones and other electronic devices while driving, they should also remember to “move over” for stopped emergency and hazard vehicles when traveling. Last year’s Fourth of July enforcement period, Troopers issued 10,497 total tickets, arrested 210 people for DWI, 258 tickets for distracted driving, 301 tickets for Move Over law violations.

49 year old Thomas George of Binghamton, was found guilty following a jury trial in Broome County Court for Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On July 1, 2025, Police conducted a traffic stop in Johnson City, officers located drug paraphernalia and a quantity of methamphetamine, they also discovered that George had a loaded handgun concealed in his waistband, with 10 rounds of ammunition. George is scheduled to be sentenced on August 14th, he faces up to 15 years in State Prison followed by 5 years of post-release supervision.

The Chenango County Historical Society and the Chenango County Historian’s Office are hosting the “America’s Potluck & Turtle Island Festival” from 4–8 pm. on July 5 at the Chenango County Fairgrounds. Historical Society Executive Director Jessica Moquin told WCDO what people can expect to see:

Lull said that the was the 4th year old of the Scholarship, which has handed out about $65,000 so far to graduating seniors.

35 Year old Ciera Washington of the Bronx pleaded guilty in US District Court to conspiracy to commit health care fraud and aggravated identity theft. Washington admitted that from April 2023 through October 2024, she worked with 2 others to steal the personal information of Medicaid beneficiaries and use that information to fraudulently obtain prescription medications from pharmacies throughout New York State & the Northeastern States, which caused a loss of nearly $4 million to the Medicaid program and tens of thousands of dollars to pharmacies. Washington agreed to forfeit over $400,000 in proceeds from her crimes and to consent to an order of restitution for the losses they caused. Washington faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment on the fraud count and a mandatory term of 2 years on the aggravated identity theft count, which must run consecutively, when sentenced in October in Federal Court, She also faces a term of supervised release of up to 3 years.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that more than $10 million in funding was awarded to 20 projects as part of Round 2 of the Municipal Parks and Recreation (MPR) Grant Program to fund the development and improvement of municipal parks and recreation sites statewide for the public to enjoy. Funding for this program was provided by the $4.2 billion Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act. 1 of the awards will go to the City of Norwich, they receive $810,000 to improve safety, accessibility and play opportunities by replacing aging playground equipment, court space and safety surfacing at the park on Hale Street.

State and local law enforcement agencies will increase patrols to crack down on reckless and impaired driving statewide ahead of and during the July 4th holiday weekend. This campaign began Monday & will run through Sunday, July 5. Law enforcement officers across New York will conduct sobriety checkpoints and target dangerous and aggressive driving during what is considered the busiest travel weekend of the summer. To help ease travel during the busy holiday weekend, temporary lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on New York State highways will be suspended from 6 am. Thursday, July 2, through 6 am. Monday, July 6, some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs.

The Delaware County Board of Supervisors has approved funding for a countywide Fire Services Assessment to be conducted by Emergency Services Consulting International. The approval follows recommendations from the Delaware County Fire Advisory Board’s Recruitment and Retention Committee and an overwhelming majority of County Fire Chiefs regarding the challenges facing Delaware County’s volunteer fire service. The Delaware County Board of Supervisors approved Resolution No. 96 authorizing the transfer of $73,828 to retain ESCI to perform the assessment, which should take about 9 months to complete following project initiation and data collection.

Governor Hochul today announced the release of the $30 million Agricultural Resiliency Against Tariffs Program for New York agricultural producers. The tariff relief program will provide direct payments of a minimum of $1,000 and a maximum of $25,000 to eligible producers. Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 60 year old Robert Sanfelice of the Town of Union, for allegedly harassing a neighborhood family because of their race and ethnic origin since 2020. Sanfelice was charged with several Counts of Harassment, Sanfelice was taken to Central Arraignment where he was released on his own recognizance, to appear in the Town of Union Court at a later date.

51 year old David Gensler of Delhi, pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court, to 5 separate indictments, for Unlawful Imprisonment, Attempted Bribery of a Witness, Criminal Contempt, Falsely Reporting an Incident, Aggravated Harassment, for various attacks against a few county Residents, Orders of Protections were issued on behalf of the victims, Gensler was sentenced to 2 terms of 1 year in prison to run concurrently, plus time served on other counts.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 45 year old Ryan Barriger of Walton following the execution of an arrest warrant issued by the Town of Walton Court.   On June 24th, Deputies responded to an "in progress" domestic incident, Deputies found that Barriger had engaged in a physical domestic with another person while a child was present, Thursday, Deputies received court documents they located & arrested Barriger, he was charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Harassment & he was processed, arraigned & was released on his own recognizance and was directed to reappear at the Town of Walton Court at a later date to answer the charges.

State Police arrested 41 year old Donatello Lazarati of Baldwinsville for Bail Jumping and Criminal Contempt, following a violation of a court order issued following his arraignment on a previous Grand Larceny charge. Lazarati was prohibited from leaving the United States and was directed to surrender his passport. Lazarati failed to comply with those conditions, State Police were notified Thursday that Lazarati was attempting to leave the United States and purchased an airline ticket to Qatar at John F. Kennedy International Airport, he was arrested at the airport, brought back to Troop C, and was processed in and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $35,000 cash, $50,000 credit or $250,000 partially secured bond.

The Luszi’s Legacy Cornhole Tournament last weekend successful, the tournament raised $1,600 that will go directly to Pet Street Station Animal Hospital fund, to assist families deal with the bills for emergency or quality of life care for their senior pets.

State DEC announced that a Free Fishing Weekend in New York State will take place this weekend, which is part of 6 designated Free Fishing Days that take place each year in New York State. During these days, the fishing license requirement is waived for freshwater fishing on New York’s waters.

Several law enforcement agencies commented at a press conference in Binghamton today regarding the Fire at the Knight's Inn of Endwell June 22nd, State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Captain Lucas Anthony discussed the investigation & released the names of those deceased in Monday's Fire:

State Police arrested 24 year old Tyler Russell of Endwell, Monday for 6 counts of 2nd degree Manslaughter & 1 count of Arson, he is being held at the Broome County Correctional Facility without bail pending Grand Jury action.

The FBI & the Johnson City Police Department arrested 69 year old Robert Randesi of Johnson City on federal drug & weapons charges after the execution of search warrant at a warehouse style building in Johnson City. Officers located over 20 pounds of suspected methamphetamine, quantities of marijuana, approximately $24,000 in cash, several firearms including AR-15 style rifles, ghost guns, firearm parts and ammunition, plus machinist tools and metal fabricating equipment consistent with tools used to construct or mill firearms & their parts. Randesi is currently in the Broome County Jail, He faces court action for both state and federal charges.

The State DOT announced the start of the $7 million Southside Oneonta Safety and Mobility Improvement Project, which will reduce traffic congestion and enhance pedestrian access along the State Route 23 and State Route 28 corridor. The project includes extended turning lanes, a new sidewalk and an additional pedestrian crosswalk, ADA-compliant curb ramps, plus 2 new bus stops for Oneonta Public Transit users, construction will be continuing through the fall of 2027.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 43 year old Mark Andrews of Schenevus, for DWI, Refusal to take Breath Test, Failure to Keep Right, Driving on slopes and shoulders and Speed not reasonable and prudent following a 1 car property damage motor vehicle accident in the Town of Middlefield. Andrews was processed and released & will appear in Town of Middlefield Court at a later date.

38 year old Ronald Boerner of Andes pleaded guilty in the Town of Andes Court to Driving While Impaired by Drugs and was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge, he will be required to attend a Victim Impact Panel, Impaired Driver’s Program and his license will be revoked for at least six months., if he violates any terms or conditions of his conditional discharge, he could be re-sentenced to 1 year in jail. On October 15, 2025, State Police responded to a 2 car accident in Andes, they found that a vehicle was rear-ended when turning into a parking lot, Boerner failed Field Sobriety Tests and was arrested.

Broome County 911 Center received multiple reports of a fire at the Knights Inn, at 2603 East Main Street in Endwell, at about 6:00 AM today, a total of 6 fatalities have been confirmed. Additional information, including the identities of the victims, will be released at a later time, 2 others were taken to Wilson Medical Center. over 70 residents have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. A temporary shelter has been set up at the Vestal United Methodist Church. Endwell Fire Department arrived to find heavy black smoke in the front of the building and flames showing from the rear of the building. The fire spread rapidly, and multiple Fire Departments, ambulance crews and police agencies arrived on scene to assist. The New York State Office of Fire, the Broome County Office of Emergency Services, Broome County Mobile Crisis Response Team is on scene, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

State Attorney General Letitia James today released guidance to help New Yorkers understand their health insurance options and avoid scams as major changes to New York's Essential Plan take effect. Beginning July 1, 2026, New Yorkers enrolled in the Essential Plan with household incomes over 200 percent of the federal poverty level will no longer be eligible for that coverage, which translates to approximately 450,000 New Yorkers who are set to lose Essential Plan coverage. New Yorkers who enrolled in health insurance through New York State of Health can get free help renewing or changing coverage from New York State of Health-certified enrollment assistors by visiting nystateofhealth.ny.gov or calling 1-855-355-5777. Anyone who believes they have been misled, scammed, or improperly enrolled in a health insurance plan is encouraged to contact OAG's Health Care Helpline for assistance.

Tomorrow is is Primary Election day around the State. Democrats will vote statewide for the Comptroller candidate between long time incumbent Tom DiNapoli and challengers Drew Warshaw and Raj Goyle. Locally Democrats in the 102nd Assembly District will decide between 3 candidates, Thomas Boomhower, Janet Tweed & Mary Finneran. State Police arrested 56 year old Joel Salinas of Bainbridge following a traffic stop on Chenango County Road 35 last Tuesday. Troopers observed a vehicle committing multiple violations, initiated a traffic stop, Troopers observed a sawed-off shot gun and other illegal weapons, Salinas was driving to sell the shotgun, the investigation resulted in the seizure of several other illegally possessed weapons. Salinas was charged with multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Sale of a Firearm, he was processed & transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.

NYSEG reported a high of over 14,400 customers without power across the western Counties of the state, following strong thunderstorms earlier today, crews have been working to restore power as soon as possible, much of the area was also under a Tornado watch, which expired at 3:00 PM, only about 250 NYSEG customers lost power in the Tri-County region.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office updated the public on the recent Salmonella outbreak at the jail, with 12 hospitalized over hundreds sickened, Broome County Health Department Director Olivia Catalano spoke at this afternoon's press conference:

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar stated that while many have called for the quick dismissal of the Food Care Provider, that process would take months to dismiss and appoint a new provider, he referenced a similar situation several years ago with a food provider at an area nursing home:

There are no current hospitalizations among the inmates, Health care workers are remaining on site to continue to monitor the situation to insure that another outbreak does not occur.

State DOT announced today that starting on June 29th, they will be replacing a culvert, leading to Route 23 west of Ashcraft Road, the project is expected to take about 6 weeks, a detour will lead traffic onto County Road 10, County Road 10A and State Route 12 through Pharsalia, Preston and Norwich. Drivers are encouraged to use caution and give themselves ample time in their commutes.

State Police arrested 27 year old Jon Hertzog of Port Crane for DWI following a 2 vehicle crash on Interstate 88 Tuesday in the town of Chenango. An investigation determined that the vehicles crashed while entering a 1 lane only construction zone, Troopers administered Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which indicated impairment, Hertzog was arrested, his B.A.C was .14%, he was processed and issued appearance tickets to the Chenango Town Court on July 28.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 25 year old Tara Tilley of Norwich for DWI, Consumption of Alcohol in Motor Vehicle, and several traffic violations, following a personal injury motor vehicle accident in the Town of Morris. Tilley was Defendant was issued appearance tickets for Town of Morris Court at a later date.

The Norwich Business Improvement District announced today that Public art will be coming to Downtown Norwich. Development Chenango Corporation was awarded $600,000 for a Downtown small project grant fund, $350,000 was spent supporting property owners’ renovations. The remaining funds, along with donations from Friends of the Park and local foundations, have been allocated to public art for Downtown Norwich. Awarded artists will design and install five sculptures and one mural Downtown! The Norwich Public Art Initiative, a committee formed to steward the project, has launched a request for artist qualifications as the first phase of the project, final proposals will be selected by December 1, with anticipated installation of the art work in spring 2027.

State DEC announced several changes to deer hunting regulations to increase harvest of female deer and improve DEC’s ability to manage abundant deer populations. Under the new system, all hunters will receive a first Antlered Deer Tag which can be used during any season, except the September antlerless season. Governor Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday that over $2 billion in tax relief checks will be sent out to nearly three million New York homeowners as part of the state's School Tax Relief (STAR) program. Hochul says most homeowners who are eligible for STAR credit will receive a check between $350 and $600. Seniors who are eligible will receive a check between $700 and $1,500.

Binghamton Police Department arrested 53 year old Stanley DeGroat of Binghamton and 47 year old Brett White of Binghamton, following a shooting. DeGroat was charged with Attempted murder, Criminal possession of a weapon, Criminal contempt & 4 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, White was charged with 8 counts of criminal possession of a weapon, following an incident Sunday, where DeGroat fired a shot that grazed the victim's hand, he fled the scene on a bicycle, he was located & taken into custody. Search warrants were obtained & executed at 2 locations, Officers found several rifles, shotguns, and 2 illegally possessed handguns, which led to White's arrest. Both face court action shortly, more charges may be forthcoming.

Attorney General Letitia James announced that the Trump administration dismissed its appeal of a court ruling striking down its blockade on wind energy development. In May 2025, James led a coalition of 17 other attorneys general in suing to block a presidential directive suspending all federal approvals for wind energy projects. In December 2025, the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts granted the coalition's motion for summary judgment, declared the directive illegal, and vacated the order.

44 year old Richard Robinson of Holland Patent pleaded guilty to Attempted Promoting Prison Contraband in Delaware County Court Tuesday. Robinson was an inmate at the Delaware County Correctional Facility on April 17th, he had 2 small plastic bags with a white powdery residue in a brown paper bag, the substance tested positive for methamphetamine. The case was presented to the Delaware County Grand Jury, Robinson was indicted for Promoting Prison Contraband & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, sentencing will be on August 25th, Robinson is expected to be sentenced to 1.5 to 3 years in jail.

Walton Police arrested former Walton Teacher Eric Scofield who allegedly violated an Order of Protection by being on school property. Scofield was located on the property of the Walton High School, Scofield was charged with 4 counts of Criminal Contempt, he was arraigned & was being held at the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond. Scofield was ordered to stay away from the district after an investigation for engaging in improper communications with students.

Rail Fans are waiting for the Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014, the world's largest operating steam locomotive, to move through the region in the coming days. as part of a historic coast-to-coast tour to celebrate America's 250th anniversary. A Homeland Security Task Force Investigation Resulted in Convictions for 11 Drug Traffickers from across the Southern Tier, around the state and in Michigan. The 11 defendants involved in an organization distributing large quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and other drugs primarily from 2019 to 2021 through Broome, Tioga and Chemung Counties, they also unlawfully possessed firearms as felons or in furtherance of their drug trafficking. Law enforcement seized methamphetamine, & other drugs, over 65 firearms, cash and ATVs. Among those convicted 55 year old David Wemmer, 37 year old David Cobb & 50 year old Brandon Vanorman, all from Spencer, 38 year old Shawn McCabe of Windsor, 39 year old Philip Acciarito of Owego, , 44 year old Jennifer Patton of Spencer & 39 year old Eini Raupers of Candor.

Governor Hochul announced that $6 million in State support included in the recently passed budget, will allow for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies to commit to a five-year lease extension at Mirabito Stadium. The Madison County District Attorney, State Police, University Police at SUNY Morrisville and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office announced that an arrest has been made in connection with a shooting on the SUNY Morrisville campus that left a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the neck back on November 3rd of 2025. The victim was not a student, and was taken to Upstate Medical Hospital for emergency surgery. A Madison County grand jury indicted 19 year old Kido Simon on 6 counts, including attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal use of a firearm. Simon was a student at SUNY Morrisville at the time of the shooting, he is being held at Madison County Jail on bail set at $1,000,000 cash, $1,500,000 bond and $2,000,000 partially unsecured bond. Simon’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 3 at the Madison County Courthouse. 1 other person is wanted in connection with this case who remains at large.

On Friday, State Police arrested Lieutenant Thomas Fellrath of the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office on multiple charges following an investigation by the State Police & the Otsego County District Attorney’s Office. Fellrath is charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Defrauding the Government, Official Misconduct, Fellrath is accused of possessing 10 grams of cocaine during a traffic stop on the New York State Thruway in Herkimer County, At the time of his arrest, Fellrath was on-duty and driving an unmarked Otsego County Sheriff’s Office vehicle outside of Otsego County.

Governor Hochul's Office announced a 5 year deal has been reached on a contract for the CIVIL SERVICE EMPLOYEE ASSOCIATION, with more than 55,000 New York State Employees. Plans are going forward to unearth a Time Capsule buried in Unadilla in 1976 and have it opened this July 4th, as part of a celebration for the 250th anniversary of America. The 218th Session of the New York State Police Basic School held their graduation today at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center. 175 Troopers graduated, 23 are training in Troop C, 8 are local from the Troop C area. The new Troopers will be starting May 30 and will be with a Field Training Officer for 10 weeks before getting their official permanent station assignment. State Police arrested 52 year old Jonathan Menhennett of Oneonta after a dispute at a residence in the town of Oneonta. Menhennett allegedly menaced a victim & made threats with 2 knives, the victim sustained injuries but did not wish to be transported to a hospital. Menhennett was charged with 2 counts of Menacing, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, he was processed & was transported to the Otsego County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 41 year old Alex Scrivani of Claryville for Burglary & Criminal Mischief in Andes on May 11th. Deputies observed Scrivani walking along the highway, they attempted to interview him & he was uncooperative. Deputies later observed Scrivani exiting a residence and driveway, he was detained and it was determined that Scrivani was not supposed to be in the buildings or on the property. The homeowner was contacted and responded to the scene. Scrivani had forced his way into the building & his belongings were located inside, Scrivani was arrested, he was processed and arraigned and was being held on bail at the Delaware County Jail pending future court action.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office responded Monday to State Highway 12 in the Town of Norwich for a reported motor vehicle versus bicycle crash. The preliminary investigation determined that a 69-year-old male from Oxford, NY was operating an E-bike on the southbound shoulder of the roadway when he entered the southbound lane and was struck by a vehicle operated by a 16-year-old male traveling southbound. The operator of the E-bike was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, where he remains in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing.

State Police responded Saturday Night to a 1 vehicle crash on County Highway 1 and Little Dingle Hill Road in the town of Andes. An investigation at the scene determined that 27 year old Ethan Ray Kennedy of Delhi lost control of his vehicle & went off the roadway and struck an embankment causing the vehicle to roll and land on its roof. Kennedy did not survive.

A raccoon tested positive for rabies in the town of Davenport, it's the 2nd confirmed positive case of rabies in Delaware County this year. 1 dog & 3 people were exposed to the rabid raccoon, the raccoon was sent for testing to the State Department of Health Wadsworth Laboratory. The exposed dog received a booster, the 3 people exposed have begun Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis. State Police arrested 40 year old Michael Sodomora of Richmondville for Reckless Endangerment, following a crash on May 12th. Troopers responded to Lowe’s on State Highway 23 in Oneonta for a report of a vehicle that struck the building. An investigation determined that Sodomora traveled through the Lowe’s parking lot at high rate of speed before striking the entrance of the building, traveling several feet inside and damaging a cash register counter and multiple shelves of merchandise. Sodomora and a 63-year-old female passenger from Pennsylvania were not injured, Sodomora was processed & turned over to the Otsego County Jail for arraignment.

State Attorney General Letitia James has released footage from the Vestal Police body-worn cameras that her office obtained as part of its ongoing investigation into the death of Eslam Hegazy, who died on February 25th following an encounter with Vestal Police Department. The video shows Police instructing Hegazy to drop his knife repeatedly, a Taser was deployed at Hegazy, who still failed to comply, 2 officers shot at him, Hegazy was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 41 year old Trevor Metterhauser of Pennsylvania was sentenced in a New York Federal Court room to 80 years in prison plus multiple fines for attempted aggravated sexual abuse, aggravated sexual abuse, sexual exploitation of children, and multiple counts of possession of child pornography, involving 2 toddlers, 1 in the Southern Tier & the other in Texas. As part of his guilty plea, Metterhauser admitted he conspired with Brandon Whitford to sexually exploit an a 4-year-old girl in New York & record the abuse, Metterhauser also traveled to Texas where he conspired with Carlos Ruiz to sexually assault a 2-year-old child and to record that abuse. Co-Conspirators Whitford and Ruiz have each pleaded guilty in connection with this case.

State Police announced that 18 year old Dalton Malmstrom of Nichols, who was reported missing Saturday, was found deceased in the Susquehanna River by the State Police Under Water Recovery Team and members of the K9 unit. Delaware County has been contracting with Delaware Opportunities, to provide nutrition services to Delaware County residents 60 years or older and their spouses. Thursday Night, Delaware Opportunities ceased all operations of senior meals effective immediately. The Delaware County Office for the Aging took over today. Delaware County officials will move forward with the plan to take senior meals service in house rather than waiting until 2027. Norwich Police Department arrested Todd Talbot of Norwich, for Endangering the Welfare of a Vulnerable Adult, Sexual Abuse, and Forcible Touching. Talbot allegedly subjected the victim to unwanted sexual contact, he was located by and taken into custody without incident. Talbot was arraigned in Norwich City Court and remanded to the custody of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on cash bail. He is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

New York Attorney General Letitia James is suing Coinbase and Gemini, 2 of the newest players in the prediction market industry, arguing that the companies' unregulated and unlicensed platforms are illegal gambling operations. By operating without licenses, the lawsuit says, Coinbase's and Gemini's prediction market businesses aren't paying the same taxes as licensed casinos and mobile sports-books, which are taxed by the state at a rate of approximately 51% of gross revenues. The lawsuit also claims that Coinbase and Gemini allow users as young as 18, the state law prohibits wagering by anyone under 21. The lawsuit seeks to bar the companies' platforms from operating in the state unless and until they obtain licenses from the state Gaming Commission.

Delaware County Public Health is hosting free Climate and Health Workshops at the Delaware County Senior Dining Centers. Participants will learn how changes to the climate can impact their health and ways to prepare for emergencies. These workshops are free and open to residents 60 years and older. Each workshop will take place during the senior dining program lunch hour from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM, each participant will receive a starter emergency preparedness kit. Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 54 year old Shelley Wilkerson of Worcester for Overdriving, torturing and injuring animals and failure to provide sustenance following an investigation into a report of an elderly Great Dane that was dying or deceased at Wilkerson's residence. Deputies found the Great Dane was located outside, the Investigation revealed that Wilkerson allegedly failed to provide proper veterinary care to the dog, which resulted in the dog's death. Wilkerson was arrested and was issued an Appearance Ticket to Town of Worcester Court at a later date.

New York lawmakers passed a third budget extender Monday to keep state government running and employees paid as budget negotiations, continue in Albany. The stalemate continues due to issues like the state’s climate law, auto insurance reform, education and housing. The budget was due April 1st & has been late the last 5 years.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that various Municipalities in the Mohawk Valley, received Downtown Revitalization Initiative funds, locally the Village of Morris will receive $4.5 million as winners of the 4th round of the NY Forward program. Morris will invest in sidewalks, streetscapes and housing to strengthen its downtown region in order to make the village a more popular tourist location.

Progress is being made towards the early childhood education center in the lower level of the new Commerce Chenango Building at 19 East Main Street, in downtown Norwich. The project is being coordinated by Commerce Chenango, in collaboration with the City of Norwich, the Chenango County Industrial Development Agency, & "The Place" The center is approved to serve 52 children, featuring classrooms, a play room, and dedicated outdoor space, the project is expected to be completed & open in October.

Village of Sidney reminds local residents that the Department of Public Works will be continuing with Spring Brush Removal, crews will be doing brush pick up the first week of every month. The City of Norwich and Chenango County Emergency Operations Center have issued a travel advisory for motorists using state Route 12 for bridge work on the Route 12 bridge over the Canasawacta Creek at the Southern end of the City. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced monthly weekend office hours for pistol permit processing, as well as a new Firearm Safety Course. Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 30 year old Nicholas Kahl of Middle Island following an investigation of a larceny complaint. On March 22nd, Deputies were dispatched to a complaint in Hamden, it was discovered that Kahl allegedly stole a tractor from a property without the owner’s consent. Deputies arrested Kahl for Grand Larceny, he was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await Arraignment.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced that Wall Street’s securities industry bonus pool reached a record $49.2 billion in 2025, up 9% from the previous year, while the average bonus rose 6% to $246,900. The increases reflect a rise of more than 30% in Wall Street’s profits, which totaled $65.1 billion in 2025. Wall Street accounted for 19.4% of the state’s tax collections in the current State Fiscal Year.

Justin Valk of Davenport was sentenced to 31 years to life in prison in Delaware County Court Wednesday, 25 years to life for 2nd degree Murder, which will run consecutive to the 6 years he was previously sentenced to for Burglary. Valk was also sentenced to 20 years for Assault, and 5 Years for a 2 counts Criminal Possession of a Controlled substance, both of those sentences will run concurrent to the murder sentence. Valk caused the death of his wife, Stephanie by injecting her with multiple doses of Methamphetamine and Fentanyl over a 24 hour period, the evidence was shown to a jury of footage shot by Valk, during a trial in January of his wife suffering from seizures and convulsions.

State Police arrested 62 year old Frank Kovacs of Laurens, on a warrant for 8 counts of Rape, 3 counts of Criminal Sex Act, 3 counts of Sexual Abuse, Investigators received information pertaining to the rape and sexual assault of a child in Saratoga County from 2008 until 2011 in Clifton Park. Kovacs was arrested at his place of employment in Oneonta, and was transported to State Police in Clifton Park for processing. He was then arraigned at the Clifton Park Town Court where he was remanded to the Saratoga County Correctional Facility on $50,000 cash bail, a $250,000 bond, or a $500,000 partially secured bond. In June 2025, Kovacs was arrested by State Police for rape and sex abuse charges following a Otsego County grand jury indictment, this arrest is a continuation of that investigation. Kovacs is also mayor of the village of Laurens.

The Oneonta Town Board will hold a Public Hearing on April 8th regarding Plans to build an artificial intelligence data center at 359 County Road 9, which were put on hold following a 1 year moratorium on the project. Town Residents submitted a petition with over 700 signatures opposing the project by Eco-Yotta.

The State Cannabis Advisory Board and The State Office of Cannabis Management announced the launch of the second application round for the Community Reinvestment Program Grants, continuing New York's effort to reinvest adult-use cannabis tax revenue into communities disproportionately impacted by past federal and state drug policies. This grant opportunity has a minimum of $5 million to award and up to $15 million, Interested applicants can apply for the Community Reinvestment Grants at cannabis.ny.gov/reinvestment.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45 year old Gerald Schmitt of Norwich following an investigation into a stolen trailer and snowmobiles from the Town of Norwich. Schmitt was charged with Criminal possession of stolen property, tampering with physical evidence & Conspiracy, after 2 stolen snowmobiles were found on Schmitt’s property. Schmitt was released on appearance tickets in accordance with New York State Bail Reform and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

The State Attorney General’s Office is investigating the death of an unidentified Binghamton man this past weekend. On March 7, Binghamton Police responded to the report of a man in the road blocking a Broome County Transit bus, he eventually climbed onto the front of the bus, resisted arrest, was taken to Binghamton General Hospital for a health evaluation, & was discharged the following day& was taken to Binghamton Police Headquarters, he experienced a medical emergency, officers administered 1st aid until EMT's took him to Wilson Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. The State DEC & local fire departments remind area residents that the annual burn ban will will take effect March 16th, and will run through May 14th this year. During the Burn Ban, people will not be allowed to have large open fires and the burning of leaves, brush, cardboard are prohibited. The use of fire pits with fireguards, small cooking fires, charcoal and propane gas grills are allowed. The Burn Ban exists due to the high risk of wildfires & grass fires that can occur during the early spring and spread rapidly due to the drier than normal conditions.

Delaware County Public Health reported that a raccoon tested positive for rabies in the town of Colchester, it's the 1st positive case of rabies in Delaware County in 2026. The average price of gasoline at the pump in New York has increased by almost 40 cents per gallon in the last week, reaching $3.36 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. Nationally, the average price of gasoline went up 51 cents per gallon, averaging $3.45 per gallon. GasBuddy attributes the spike in gas prices to the U.S. strikes on Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, they suspect that prices will continue to rise as long as the conflict is continuing.

This annual traffic safety enforcement period will begin on Monday, March 9, and run through Tuesday, March 17.? Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 33 year old Kimberly Hart of Norwich, following an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving a juvenile victim. Hart allegedly engaged in sexual relations with a female juvenile victim & promoted the production of nude images of the juvenile victim and disseminated those images electronically to a registered sex offender residing in North Carolina. Hart was charged with Obscenity, Sexual Abuse, Disseminating Indecent Material to Minors, Sexual Misconduct, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Child & Promoting an Obscene Sexual Performance by a Child Less Than 17 Years of Age. Hart was arraigned & remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $15,000 cash bail, $30,000 bond, The investigation remains ongoing.
