State and local law enforcement agencies will increase patrols to crack down on reckless and impaired driving statewide ahead of and during the July 4th holiday weekend. This campaign began Monday & will run through Sunday, July 5. Law enforcement officers across New York will conduct sobriety checkpoints and target dangerous and aggressive driving during what is considered the busiest travel weekend of the summer. To help ease travel during the busy holiday weekend, temporary lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on New York State highways will be suspended from 6 am. Thursday, July 2, through 6 am. Monday, July 6, some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs.

State Police arrested 37 year old Sean Haynes of Johnson City for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, after a Trooper observed a motorcycle speeding and initiated a traffic stop. The Trooper determined that the motorcycle was unregistered and uninsured & Haynes was in possession of suspected crack cocaine. Haynes was arrested & was later turned over to the Broome County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced nearly $21 million in additional funding through the NY SWIMS initiative to support 16 new projects across the state, bringing the total to 79 projects. A EF-1 tornado has been confirmed in Otsego County Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service, it touched down along Otsego County Highway 49 near Ketchum Road in Pittsfield & traveled 8.4 miles to Crawford Road & County Highway 10 in Laurens, it was on the ground for 18 minutes, with estimated wind speeds of 105 miles per hour. No injuries were reported, 4 structures were destroyed, the Towns of Pittsfield and Laurens are in a state of emergency.

NYSEG reported a high of over 14,400 customers without power across the western Counties of the state, following strong thunderstorms earlier today, crews have been working to restore power as soon as possible, much of the area was also under a Tornado watch, which expired at 3:00 PM, only about 250 NYSEG customers lost power in the Tri-County region.

State DOT announced today that starting on June 29th, they will be replacing a culvert, leading to Route 23 west of Ashcraft Road, the project is expected to take about 6 weeks, a detour will lead traffic onto County Road 10, County Road 10A and State Route 12 through Pharsalia, Preston and Norwich. Drivers are encouraged to use caution and give themselves ample time in their commutes.
The Chenango County Historical Society is collaborating with Commerce Chenango to host the annual Summer Barn Party from 5 to 7 pm. on June 25 at 43 Rexford Street. An investigation determined that the vehicles crashed while entering a 1 lane only construction zone, Troopers administered Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which indicated impairment, Hertzog was arrested, his B.A.C was .14%, he was processed and issued appearance tickets to the Chenango Town Court on July 28.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 46 year old Anthony Alessi of Walton for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Criminal possession of a controlled substance, following a traffic stop at a check point in Town of Colchester, Alessi is accused of being impaired & was found to possess cocaine, he was processed and was released on appearance tickets for Town of Colchester Court at a later date.

The Madison County District Attorney, State Police, University Police at SUNY Morrisville and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office announced that an arrest has been made in connection with a shooting on the SUNY Morrisville campus that left a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the neck back on November 3rd of 2025. The victim was not a student, and was taken to Upstate Medical Hospital for emergency surgery. A Madison County grand jury indicted 19 year old Kido Simon on 6 counts, including attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal use of a firearm. Simon was a student at SUNY Morrisville at the time of the shooting, he is being held at Madison County Jail on bail set at $1,000,000 cash, $1,500,000 bond and $2,000,000 partially unsecured bond. Simon’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 3 at the Madison County Courthouse. 1 other person is wanted in connection with this case who remains at large.

Delaware County has continued to transition operations of the senior meals program after Delaware Opportunities abruptly ceased operating on May 7th. Delaware County Office for the Aging has supported Senior meals both at congregate meal sites and through home meal deliveries. Congregate meal sites are now fully staffed and operational in Delhi, Hancock, Walton & Grand Gorge, the Margaretville senior meals dining center is open and located back in the Margaretville Methodist Church. The Sidney senior dining center has been temporarily relocated to the Sidney Community Cultural Center at 1 Bridge Street in Sidney, today that site will be operational to serve meals on site and prepare meals for home delivery. The County continues to work with the owners of the Sidney Senior Housing site to permanently relocate senior meals back to the senior nutrition site at 21 Liberty Street Sidney. Those interested in county employment, contact the Delaware County personnel office to inquire about these positions.

Hospice & Palliative Care of Chenango and the New York State Veterans Home at Oxford recently finalized a long-awaited partnership which now allows residents of the home and their families to receive hospice care from the nurses and volunteers of the organization. Executive Director Kendall Johnson of Hospice & Palliative Care of Chenango told WCDO news about the partnership:

The final two weekends in March have been designated as New York State Maple Weekends, & the making maple syrup will be highlighted this year at Rogers Environmental Center during their Maple Magic Weekend Celebration in Sherburne on Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29, from 12PM-3PM on both days. State Police and local law enforcement agencies statewide are participating in the national enforcement initiative to eliminate impaired driving during this year’s Super Bowl celebrations. The campaign runs through Super Bowl Sunday, there will be increased patrols, sobriety checkpoints, police will target speeding, distracted driving and other reckless driving behaviors.
State Police arrested 21 year old Colby Gravelin for Grand Larceny, Operating a Motor Vehicle While Impaired by Drugs and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Troopers observed a vehicle with vehicle and traffic infractions, a traffic stop was initiated, Gravelin failed a Field Sobriety Test, Gravelin was found to be in possession of suspected illegal drugs. Troopers learned that Gravelin was a suspect in a larceny from Home Depot in Oneonta in December, where he allegedly left the store with about $1700 in merchandise without paying for it, Gravelin was issued appearance tickets for the Oneonta City Court & Oneonta Town Court at later dates.
Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 49 year old Adam Lund of Columbus on an Arrest Warrant issued by the Town of New Berlin Court for Sex Offender Failure to Notify Law Enforcement of Address Change. Lund was taken into custody without incident and arraigned in the Town of Columbus Court. Lund was released on his own recognizance and will appear in the Town of New Berlin Court on a later date.

On February 13, 2025, State Police responded to Mountainside Creamery in the Town of Roxbury regarding a report that several items had been stolen. Troopers discovered that the items had been sold for scrap by Johnson, he later admitted to stealing the items valued at over $3,000, Johnson was remanded to the Delaware County Correction Facility to begin serving his sentence, If he violates the terms of probation, he faces the possibility of being re-sentenced to 2 and 1/3 to 7 years in state prison.

State Police arrested 43 year old Todd Seamon of Hartwick for 1st Degree Burglary, after Troopers were dispatched to a report of a burglary on State Route 28 in Schuyler Lake where a victim was assaulted. An investigation revealed that after an on-going dispute, Seamon forced entry into a 77-year-old's home and struck the victim multiple times causing injuries. The victim was transported to Bassett Hospital with what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries. Troopers located Seamon and he was arrested and processed. Seamon was transported to the Otsego County Correctional Facility for Centralized Arraignment.

The victim was taken to a Syracuse area Hospital, no arrests have been made, The preliminary investigation into the shooting has determined that this was an isolated dispute between people who were familiar with each other. 30 year old Karl Calhoun pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to Attempted Rape & Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On August 24th, Calhoun forcibly attacked a female, struck her multiple times, strangled her, and forcibly removed her clothing, she was able to resist the attack and escape to safety, the incident was captured on video surveillance, on September 5th, Vestal Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Calhoun, a search uncovered a loaded pistol with an extended magazine containing 9 live rounds, Calhoun will be sentenced to 10 years in state prison for Attempted Rape and 7 years for Criminal Possession of a Weapon, the sentences will run concurrently, and Calhoun will be required to register as a sex offender and an Order of Protection will remain in effect.
State Police are reminding the public to be aware of phone scams that tell a victim to withdraw large sums of money or buy gold bars to “protect their assets”. Scammers will call asking if the victim made a large purchase on Amazon, if they did not, the caller is told that their identity and social security number have been stolen, they are “transferred” to someone who claims to be from a credit union or a bank and advises that the victim to withdraw their money or purchase gold bars so that it can be held for “safe keeping”. The scammers will send a “courier” to collect the money or gold bars. State Police BCI announced the arrest of 41 year old Akash Thakkar of Hiawatha, New Jersey for Grand Larceny for a June 2024 larceny where scammers swindled $500,000 in gold bars, Troopers were able to identify Thakkar as the man who picked up the gold bars, he was processed & was turned over to the Tompkins County Jail for Arraignment.

Manon was accused of stealing over $3,000 in cash from a home he was doing work in on February 1, 2024, in the Town of Middletown, if Manon violates the terms of his probation, he faces one and a third to four years in State Prison.

State Police and local law enforcement will conduct special traffic enforcement during Columbus Day weekend to combat speeding and impaired driving. 64 year old Johannes Vulto pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court to producing cheese that caused a listeria outbreak that killed 2 people and hospitalized six others in 2016. State Police at Norwich arrested 37 year old Michael Salamey of Frankfort, in connection with a renovation at home in Chenango County. Salamey was charged with 2 counts of 3rd degree Grand Larceny, Scheming to Defraud & Petty Larceny. Salamey is accused of entering into a contract for $33,000 to complete improvements to a home in the village of Sherburne, he did not finish the work and also stopped communicating with the homeowners. Additionally, Salamey is accused of failing to pay a surveyor & Sub Contractor, he was arraigned in the Norwich City Court and is scheduled to appear at the Sherburne Village Court on November 16, 2023.

State Police Investigators continue to search for Brandon Williams who was last seen on March 11, 2019. At the time that Brandon went missing, he was 32 years old, weighing about 220 pounds and 6’2” in height. He was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, gray jeans, black Converse sneakers, a New England Patriots winter hat and a tan Carhart jacket with black writing on it. Huffman was acting as a Home Healthcare Aid for the elderly couple, he allegedly assaulted them & forced them to turn over debit card and signed checks, he then stole the victim's vehicle and fled the area. The victims were taken to an area hospital, in serious condition. Detectives tracked Huffman into Pennsylvania and then later back into Broome County, a felony Arrest Warrant was issued, he was found in Broome County & was taken into custody without incident. Huffman was charged with Robbery, Assault, Strangulation, 3rd & 4th Degree Grand Larceny, criminal mischief, endangering a vulnerable elderly adult among other charges, he was arraigned and was remanded to the Chenango County Corrections Division on $50,000 cash bail, $100,000 bond. Huffman is due to appear in the Town of Afton Court on a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff Office announced that 2 Walton juveniles were arrested regarding an Environmental Conservation complaint. On October 17th, Deputies located a vehicle parked in the roadway in the Town of Walton, unoccupied and nobody around the vehicle, they located hunting equipment in plain view inside the vehicle, they located multiple juveniles in a field nearby along with a recently killed deer. The Department of Environmental Protection seized the deer and the juveniles were turned over to the care of their parents. This week Deputies arrested the 2 juveniles, ages 16 and 17 of Walton, for multiple violations of the State Environmental Conservation Law, the juveniles were directed to appear at Delaware County Probation to answer the charges.
Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar announced that tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM, Broome County Law Enforcement Academy will hold its graduation ceremony for the Class of 2023 at the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton. This year, 38 graduates representing 17 law enforcement agencies will officially earn the rank of Officer or Deputy Sheriff.
U.S. Marshalls arrested a Brooklyn man this morning in the City of Binghamton after attempting to escape authorities in New York City. 26-year-old Thomas Nimmons was arrested by members of the U.S. Marshal’s Binghamton Division, he was wanted on a parole warrant as well as a federal arrest warrant for Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution. He is currently a suspect in an ongoing homicide investigation by the New York Police Department. Nimmons was taken into custody by the Binghamton Metro SWAT team after a search warrant was executed at 77 Mary Street. He was transported to the Binghamton Police Department and turned over to members of the NYPD shortly after.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the operator of a Chevrolet Silverado rear-ended a Dodge Durango. The Silverado rolled after impact with the Durango. The operator of the Silverado, was a 42-year-old male of Grand Gorge, A 7-year-old passenger was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center for a head injury. The operator of the Durango, a 38-year-old female of Bloomville was transported to Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown. The crash remains under investigation.

State Police at Oneonta are looking for the public’s assistance in locating a work truck that was taken without permission from Barney and Sons Well Drilling which is located on County Highway 10 in the town of Laurens. The truck is a pump hoist, and is described as 2021 Ford F550 White Utility Truck with a red crane attached to the roof. It was stolen sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday, Anyone with information is asked to call New York State Police at (607)561-7400.
Broome County Sheriff's Office released more details after a manhunt that ended in Tompkins County on Wednesday. On Tuesday, at 6:00 PM, Broome County deputies and State Police responded to a domestic disturbance in Whitney Point, the couple left the scene in a U-Haul van, a deputy observed it on State Route 12 in the Town of Chenango & recognized 30 year old Christopher Borges of Binghamton, who was wanted by Binghamton Police for Robbery. The deputy attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the driver, 20 year old Abigail Galusha of Endicott failed to comply. The pursuit continued onto I-81, state route 79, and ended in Tompkins County, when the vehicle went off the road and over an embankment. Galusha was taken into custody, she was wanted on multiple warrants, Borges fled into the woods. Around 10:00 AM Wednesday, Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a possible sighting of Borges near the abandoned van, deputies took Borges into custody, he was taken to Broome County Central Arraignment, charged with Kidnapping, Criminal Contempt, Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer

The Tri-County Seniors is partnering with Delaware Opportunities to collect gift items for senior citizens in need this holiday season. The collections began this week & will run through Monday, November 28, with collection boxes at the Tri-County Senior Center in the Sidney Civic Center, Conklin Fashions in Bainbridge, Sidney Memorial Public Library and Trackside Dining in Sidney, and Jess F. Howes Building Supplies in Sidney Center. Suggested items to donate include calendars, stamps, scarves, gloves, books, crosswords, socks, toiletries, flashlights, small blankets, and gift cards, the items will be distributed to seniors through the Delaware Opportunities home meal delivery program.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a Walton resident for driving while intoxicated after Deputies observed a vehicle traveling at around 80 miles per hour on State Hwy 206 in the Town of Walton. 22 year old Dakota Nichols of Walton was charged with DWI, driving with a .08% or more of alcohol, & Speeding, Nichols faces court action at a later date.

46 year old Jamie Crowley of Windsor was found guilty by a jury of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 2 counts of Menacing in Broome County Court, on July 3, 2021, Broome County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Crowley’s home after reports of Crowley firing a gun at a woman’s car who turned around in his driveway, and at responding deputies, who returned fire, Crowley sustained non-life threatening injuries. Crowley was sent back to the Broome County Jail following the guilty verdict.

Norwich Police have arrested 38 year old Matthew Lamb of Norwich, on charges of 4th degree arson, criminal mischief, & reckless endangerment, for allegedly using a blow torch to kill insects at his apartment at 12 State Street in Norwich Monday Night. Firefighters from the Norwich Fire Department, & the North Norwich Fire Department responded, no injuries were reported.
State Police announced that 2 people were arrested during an Underage Drinking Initiative in Otsego County on October 28th. Alcohol was sold to a minor at Mirabito's in Richfield Springs and Apple Mart in Cooperstown. An appearance ticket was issued to each clerk who sold alcohol to the minor. 10 other businesses in Otsego County were in compliance, including Mirabito stores in Cooperstown & Cherry Valley,
24 year old Kyle Corbin of Endicott, pleaded guilty to felony Attempted Promoting Prison Contraband in Broome County Court. Corbin admitted to bringing in methamphetamines into the Broome County Jail earlier this year when he was jailed on an unrelated charge. Corbin is expected to be sentenced to 1½ to 3 years in State prison when sentenced in January.
Cooperstown Firefighters responded to a blaze on Hooligan Hill Road Monday Afternoon. Investigators believe that a lawn mower caught fire in a garage after use & spread through the whole structure. The home was completely destroyed, the unidentified resident escaped without injuries.

Greater Oneonta Historical Society & Otsego 2000 are sponsoring a Walking Tour of downtown Oneonta on Saturday. The tour will focus on opportunities and threats in the Oneonta Downtown Historic District, which the State Preservation League has named to its bi-annual “7 To Save” list. State Police are looking for 2 people who scammed a clerk at the Owego Speedway October 5th, by engaging in a series of purchases including lottery tickets and Visa cards, stealing over $3,693 from the store. The incident occurred on October 5, and it is believed the pair conducted a similar scam in Johnson City earlier that evening. They may be operating a white Ford sedan. State Police arrested 27-year-old Vincent Cavalieri from Schenevus after he was involved in an incident that occurred on September 12 in 2020 in Camden. Cavalieri was off-duty from the Otsego County Sheriff's Department when he accidentally discharged his personally owned firearm in his pants pocket, resulting in the injury of a 10-year-old girl and her mother. Both victims were treated for minor injuries and released. Cavalieri was charged with Reckless Endangerment, he is currently employed as a police officer in Cooperstown. Cavalieri was arraigned in Oneida County Court and was released on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to appear back in Oneida County Court Wednesday.
State Police reported that 2 separate accidents occurred on State Route 8 in the town of Deposit Thursday. State Police were dispatched to a tractor trailer on its side Thursday afternoon, where the driver went off the roadway onto a soft shoulder and the vehicle flipped onto its side, spilling wood chips. No injuries were reported. Police reported that 1 lane was shut down for clean-up when a truck struck low hanging wires with its trailer, the truck was not damaged during the incident and no injuries were reported. but Route 8 was closed for several hours because of the downed power lines and clean up.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Walton woman for driving with a suspended license. Deputies responded Sunday to a 2-car accident on State Highway 10 in the Town of Hamden, 1 vehicle was against the guardrails and that the other vehicle had left the scene. Deputies located the vehicle that had left the scene at a nearby residence & identified the driver as 29-year-old Kassondra Pierce of Walton, who had her driving privileges suspended. Pierce was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Unlicensed Operator and Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident, she was released & was ordered to appear in Town of Hamden Court at a later date.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of a shooting during a home invasion in the town of Maine at around 8:30 PM Sunday. 23 year-old Jakev Jackson, had been receiving threatening messages while at home, then 25 year-old Brandon Sena-Bruzek of Montrose Pennsylvania & 23 year old Kenneth Hughes of Greene kicked down the door, armed with guns, Jackson was also armed with a shotgun. Investigators believe that Hughes pointed a handgun at Jackson, who fired and hit Hughes in the stomach, seriously injuring him. Hughes and Sena-Bruzek then fled the residence but were apprehended by Deputies, Hughes was taken to Wilson Hospital and Sena-Bruzek was arrested without incident. The investigation is ongoing & various felony charges will be filed.

Governor Kathy Hochul today encouraged New Yorkers to take advantage of the State's first Free Fishing Weekend of 2022, this Saturday & Sunday, February 19 and 20, when freshwater anglers are permitted to fish for free without a license. Additional free fishing days include June 25 and 26, September 24 (National Hunting and Fishing Day), and November 11 (Veterans Day). During free fishing days, residents and visitors can fish for free on any of the state's 7,500 lakes and ponds or 70,000 miles of rivers and streams. All other freshwater fishing regulations still apply.

The Governor's Office & the State Health Department reported 3,583 Positive Cases of COVID 19 Saturday, the Lowest number since October 25th. The Statewide Positivity Rate was 2.28% the Lowest Since October 31st. HEAP will begin accepting emergency benefit applications starting Monday, January 3rd, for those New Yorkers who have already used up their regular benefit and who are now facing a heating emergency. State Police are investigating a shooting in the town of Conklin, Early Thursday morning. Police responded following the report of a person or persons firing several shots from a dark colored sedan on Barbara Avenue, the shots struck a vehicle and residence, there were no injuries reported.
