State Police arrested 49 year old James Crosby of Binghamton following an investigation into an alleged threatening social media comment directed at New York State Senator Lea Webb. Crosby was charged with Making a Terroristic Threat as a Hate Crime, The investigation determined that Crosby posted a threatening comment on Facebook in response to a WBNG news story featuring Senator Webb at a Juneteenth event. Crosby was transported to the Broome County Jail for centralized arraignment. State Police also determined that Crosby was in possession of firearms despite being prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior felony conviction, Police Investigators recovered a rifle, a large capacity ammunition feeding device, and a firearm suppressor, all of which are prohibited under New York State law. Crosby was additionally charged with four counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd Degree, class “D” felonies.

The United States Attorney's Office announced that 20 year old Jerry Butler of Walton pleaded guilty in US District Court to receiving child pornography. Butler admitted that in January and February 2025, he used a social media messaging application to receive child sexual abuse material from an out-of-state minor victim. Butler exchanged approximately 20,000 messages with the victim in which Butler persuaded the victim to create and send him sexually explicit depictions of herself, or he would publicly embarrass her if she did not comply with his demands. Butler faces a term of imprisonment of at least 5 years and up to 20 years in prison when sentenced in October, he also faces a fine of up to $250,000 and a term of supervised release of at least 5 years and up to life. Butler will also be required to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 51 year old Anthony Sawyer of Norwich Monday following an investigation into a Domestic incident. Deputies responded for a disorderly conduct complaint in progress, deputies determined that Sawyer had allegedly been involved in a domestic dispute with family members, while intoxicated, he is accused of pointing a rifle at multiple victims, that Sawyer had operated an ATV on a public roadway while intoxicated Sawyer was charged with 4 counts of Menacing, plus 1 count each of Reckless Endangerment, Endangering the Welfare of a child and DWI, he was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for processing.

The Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 20 year old Cristian Navarro Guerrero of Staten Island pleaded guilty In Delhi Town Court to 1 count of Criminal Mischief for an incident On April 15, where SUNY Delhi University Police received a report of a broken window at the first-floor entrance to Catskill Hall. After viewing security camera footage, Navarro Guerrero was identified and arrested without incident, he was placed on 1 year of interim probation. Sentencing was adjourned for one year to see how the Navarro- Guerrero performs on probation.

Primary election results have been released, Democrats voted for incumbent Comptroller Tom DiNapoli in a landslide over 2 challengers, Locally Democrats in the 102nd Assembly District chose Janet Tweed over 2 other candidates. In the Republican Primaries locally,New York's 19th Congressional District, Peter Oberacker won the Republican primary, advancing to the November general election to face incumbent Josh Riley, in the 51st State Senate Republican Primary, Chris Tague was the winner, for Otsego County Sheriff, Incumbent Rich Devlin & Mike Stalter were in a virtual tie with some votes still to be counted, In Afton, Town Supervisor John Lawrence wins the Republican Primary.

47 year old Eric Rossman of Stamford appeared in the Town of Harpersfield Court Monday & pleaded guilty to 1 count of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property and 1 count of Conspiracy. In August of 2025, State Police received a report of stolen tools, at a residence located on Wood Road in Jefferson, it was determined that the stolen tools had previously been moved from a house in Harpersfield. Rossman admitted that he did not originally know that the tools were stolen, as he had put his initials on many of them, Once he was aware that they were stolen, he and one co-defendant moved to evade law enforcement. Rossman was sentenced to 1 year of incarceration to be followed by a one-year conditional discharge.

The Oneonta Fire Department responded to the report of a fire at the new Dietz Street Lofts in Oneonta, at about 2:00 PM this afternoon. mutual aid was requester from fire departments in Otego, West Oneonta, Laurens and Milford, Videos from scene showed flames on the roof of one of the buildings. WCDO News will have more information as it becomes available.

State Police at Troop C responded to the report of a Motorcycle and SUV accident at State 434 in Owego. Troopers & 1st responders attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful. The operator of the motorcycle was pronounced deceased, the driver of the SUV was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City for evaluation and treatment. The investigation remains on-going. The identity of the motorcyclist will be released once notifications are made to next of kin.

Attorney General Letitia James today announced another court victory against the National Rifle Association and former Executive Vice President & CEO Wayne LaPierre, and other top executives, The judgment will require LaPierre to pay $4.3 million back to the organization LaPierre had sought to overturn the 2024 judgment against him filed by James in 2020, the motion was rejected in State Supreme Court. LaPierre was also banned from serving as an officer or director of the NRA or any organization under the NRA's direct control for 10 years.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced a $63.5 million infrastructure project targeting roadways across the Southern Tier and western parts of the state. Locally In Otsego County, a $5.5 million safety initiative will be spent on installing a new sidewalk and drainage system upgrades along State Route 28 in Cooperstown. Transportation officials warn local commuters to prepare for ongoing lane adjustments, reduced speeds, and alternating ramp closures throughout the construction zones.

$6.3 million of the $54 million distributed to SUNY schools are going to Southern Tier universities, SUNY Chancellor John King Jr. announced that $5.8 million of that money will go to Binghamton University while the remaining $500,000 will go toward SUNY Delhi, for student services and research performed by the universities.

New York State DEC announced new and continued investments to address extreme heat, new funding opportunities to create public cooling spaces, and expanded assistance to provide affordable cooling for New Yorkers at home. CHENANGO COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE arrested 30 year old Jordan Robinson of Smyrna for Harassment, Unlawful Imprisonment, Criminal Mischief and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Deputies responded to a residence in Smyrna for a domestic dispute, where Robinson allegedly subjected the victim to unwanted physical contact, damaged property, and attempted to prevent the victim from calling 911 in the presence of a juvenile. Robinson was Arraigned & was released on an appearance ticket, and an order of protection was issued for the victim. Robinson is to appear in the Town of Smyrna Court at a later date.

Attorney General Letitia James announced the sentencing of former New York State Police Trooper Christopher Baldner of Catskill for causing the death of 11-year-old Monica Goods on December 22, 2020. Baldner was found guilty on the charge of Manslaughter & was sentenced to 2 1/2 to 7 1/2 years in prison. On December 22, 2020 Tristin Goods was driving on the New York State Thruway with his wife and two young daughters, Trooper Baldner was on patrol and stopped the Goods family car for speeding. During the stop, Baldner deployed pepper spray into the interior of the car and Mr. Goods sped away, Baldner rammed his police vehicle into the rear of the Goods family's car twice, it skidded into the guard rail, flipped over, and came to rest upside down. The impact ejected Monica Goods from the car, causing her death.

Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 26 year old Jazmine Meade of the Town of Dickinson, after a search warrant execution found narcotics & other drug paraphernalia on Monday. Members of the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force executed a search warrant at the Hillside Inn, as well a vehicle associated with Meade, officers seized 34.9 grams of cocaine, Suboxone strips, Narcotics packaging material, Digital scale, Cutting agent, Meade was charged with 2 Counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, 3 Counts of Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, Child Protective Services was contacted for additional investigation.

The Madison County District Attorney, State Police, University Police at SUNY Morrisville and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office announced that an arrest has been made in connection with a shooting on the SUNY Morrisville campus that left a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the neck back on November 3rd of 2025. The victim was not a student, and was taken to Upstate Medical Hospital for emergency surgery. A Madison County grand jury indicted 19 year old Kido Simon on 6 counts, including attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal use of a firearm. Simon was a student at SUNY Morrisville at the time of the shooting, he is being held at Madison County Jail on bail set at $1,000,000 cash, $1,500,000 bond and $2,000,000 partially unsecured bond. Simon’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 3 at the Madison County Courthouse. 1 other person is wanted in connection with this case who remains at large.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the launch of the 2026 Regional Economic Development Council Initiative, eligible REDCs will compete for funding through the $150 million ACHIEVE competition to support high-impact regional projects to advance regional goals. Up to $60 million in Regional Council Capital Funds will be made available in the 2026 Consolidated Funding Application in addition to funding from more than 20 programs to facilitate projects that advance each region’s strategic plan and state priorities. more information is available at regionalcouncils.ny.gov.

On Friday, State Police arrested Lieutenant Thomas Fellrath of the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office on multiple charges following an investigation by the State Police & the Otsego County District Attorney’s Office. Fellrath is charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Defrauding the Government, Official Misconduct, Fellrath is accused of possessing 10 grams of cocaine during a traffic stop on the New York State Thruway in Herkimer County, At the time of his arrest, Fellrath was on-duty and driving an unmarked Otsego County Sheriff’s Office vehicle outside of Otsego County.

Delaware County has continued to transition operations of the senior meals program after Delaware Opportunities abruptly ceased operating on May 7th. Delaware County Office for the Aging has supported Senior meals both at congregate meal sites and through home meal deliveries. Congregate meal sites are now fully staffed and operational in Delhi, Hancock, Walton & Grand Gorge, the Margaretville senior meals dining center is open and located back in the Margaretville Methodist Church. The Sidney senior dining center has been temporarily relocated to the Sidney Community Cultural Center at 1 Bridge Street in Sidney, today that site will be operational to serve meals on site and prepare meals for home delivery. The County continues to work with the owners of the Sidney Senior Housing site to permanently relocate senior meals back to the senior nutrition site at 21 Liberty Street Sidney. Governor Hochul's Office announced a 5 year deal has been reached on a contract for the CIVIL SERVICE EMPLOYEE ASSOCIATION, with more than 55,000 New York State Employees. The Contract Includes Yearly Salary Increases, Increases in Location Pay and Changes in Health Benefits, the Contract is Subject to Union Membership Ratification

Delaware County Public Health recommends that pet owners take advantage of any of the free rabies clinics for dogs, cats and ferrets in Delaware County. On Sunday morning at 9:14pm the City of Norwich Fire Department was dispatched for the report of a structure fire located at 6 & 6A Griffin Street in the City of Norwich. Firefighters found a working fire, crews entered the apartment building and found fire and smoke conditions within both apartments, they searched for occupants on all floors, they were able to bring the fire under control within an hour of arrival. Norwich Fire Department was assisted by the Sherburne, Oxford, North Norwich & Plymouth Fire Departments, the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and involved improperly discarded ashes from a prior campfire with the remaining ashes placed in a garbage bag on the rear porch of the home. There were no reported injuries to firefighters. 2 occupants of the home were evaluated at the scene by EMS & were released.

New York Attorney General Letitia James called for the passage of the One Fair Price law, which would ban surveillance pricing in New York state. Surveillance pricing is when companies use algorithms to analyze consumers spending habits, and then determine the highest price they will pay for a product. James said that 2 neighbors could buy the same product at the same time but pay different prices, The package includes 2 bills, one for online shopping and one for traditional retail stores. The bills also ban the use of electronic shelf labels in grocery stores and pharmacies.

Binghamton University will have over 4,800 students receiving their degrees in Commencement ceremonies being held Thursday, May 14, through Saturday, May 16, on campus. All ceremonies will be streamed live via the @BinghamtonU YouTube Channel.

State Police announced a 35% increase in vehicle and traffic tickets issued during this year’s Operation Hard Hat initiative, from April 20 through April 24th. State Police conducted 12 enforcement details across the state. Troopers were deployed within active work zones, 967 tickets were issued, 401 for speeding, 138 for distracted driving, 160 for violations of New York’s Move Over Law. In Troop c there were 65 tickets issued, 34 of those were for speeding,

A heavy presence of emergency responders and volunteers from both New York and Pennsylvania are searching for 18-year-old Dalton Malmstrom, who was last seen leaving his residence near the Susquehanna River in the town of Nichols, at 7:45 am. Saturday, Family members told Police that he was not acting like himself prior to leaving. Dalton is described as a 5-foot-10 white male with dark hair and was last seen wearing a dark-colored shirt. Anyone who with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to contact the State Police at (607) 561-7400 immediately, a picture is posted at the State Police Facebook page.

Old Route 17 in the Town of Sanford, will be closed to all traffic today and should be reopened to traffic on August 15. The road will be closed for a large culvert replacement, All thru traffic will need to seek alternate routes while the road is closed; A signed detour will be in place.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 38 year old Jennifer Hewitt of Cooperstown following an investigation into a fraud complaint at 2 Delaware County banks. Deputies were dispatched on March 3rd to a fraud complaint, they learned that Hewitt cashed 2 separate checks at 2 different Delaware National Bank of Delhi locations totaling more than $14,000, she did not have the funds available to cover the checks. Deputies arrested Hewitt for 2 counts of Grand Larceny among other related charges, Hewitt was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await Arraignment.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced monthly weekend office hours for pistol permit processing, as well as a new Firearm Safety Course. On Saturday, April 11th, the Identification/Pistol Permit Office will begin Monthly Weekend Office Hours from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM to process pistol permit applications, plus other business for community members who are unable to visit Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Community members are also invited to register for the first Sheriff's Office Firearm Safety Course provided by their Training Division, which will also take place on Saturday, April 11, Course space is limited, register at broomecountyny.gov.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 30 year old Nicholas Kahl of Middle Island following an investigation of a larceny complaint. On March 22nd, Deputies were dispatched to a complaint in Hamden, it was discovered that Kahl allegedly stole a tractor from a property without the owner’s consent. Deputies arrested Kahl for Grand Larceny, he was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await Arraignment.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced that Wall Street’s securities industry bonus pool reached a record $49.2 billion in 2025, up 9% from the previous year, while the average bonus rose 6% to $246,900. The increases reflect a rise of more than 30% in Wall Street’s profits, which totaled $65.1 billion in 2025. Wall Street accounted for 19.4% of the state’s tax collections in the current State Fiscal Year.

Justin Valk of Davenport was sentenced to 31 years to life in prison in Delaware County Court Wednesday, 25 years to life for 2nd degree Murder, which will run consecutive to the 6 years he was previously sentenced to for Burglary. Valk was also sentenced to 20 years for Assault, and 5 Years for a 2 counts Criminal Possession of a Controlled substance, both of those sentences will run concurrent to the murder sentence. Valk caused the death of his wife, Stephanie by injecting her with multiple doses of Methamphetamine and Fentanyl over a 24 hour period, the evidence was shown to a jury of footage shot by Valk, during a trial in January of his wife suffering from seizures and convulsions.

State Police arrested 62 year old Frank Kovacs of Laurens, on a warrant for 8 counts of Rape, 3 counts of Criminal Sex Act, 3 counts of Sexual Abuse, Investigators received information pertaining to the rape and sexual assault of a child in Saratoga County from 2008 until 2011 in Clifton Park. Kovacs was arrested at his place of employment in Oneonta, and was transported to State Police in Clifton Park for processing. He was then arraigned at the Clifton Park Town Court where he was remanded to the Saratoga County Correctional Facility on $50,000 cash bail, a $250,000 bond, or a $500,000 partially secured bond. In June 2025, Kovacs was arrested by State Police for rape and sex abuse charges following a Otsego County grand jury indictment, this arrest is a continuation of that investigation. Kovacs is also mayor of the village of Laurens.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of a scam currently circulating, as Several county residents have reported receiving phone calls claiming they have an active warrant for their arrest and are instructed to pay a sum of money to have the matter “cleared up.” This is a scam, as the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office will never contact individuals by phone to demand payment.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 30-year-old Daniel Roe of Davenport, who is accused of subjecting a juvenile to sexual contact in May 2024. Roe was also alleged to have subjected another juvenile to inappropriate sexual conversations during the same time frame. Investigators arrested Roe on 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, 1 count of Forcible Touching, 1 count of Sexual Abuse, Roe was arraigned & Orders of Protection were issued for the victims. Roe was later released on his own recognizance and was directed to appear at the Town of Davenport Court at a later date to answer the charges.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 35 year old Shane Tweedie of Walton following an investigation into a stolen vehicle complaint reported in the Town of Bovina and was later located in the Village of Walton. Tweedie was located by deputies in the Village of Walton and he was charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Grand Larceny, Burglary, Criminal Contempt & Criminal Trespass, Tweedie was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await Centralized Arraignment Court.

City of Oneonta announced that crews will be installing new Rapid Flashing Beacons at crosswalks at the new roundabout project. Motorists should expect temporary lane closures at various times over the next two weeks, at Main Street East, Lettis Highway South, Main Street West through the roundabout and at Pine Street.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 19 year old Dayton Carney of Pittsfield, for Assault & Endangering the Welfare of a Child, following an investigation into an assault complaint in the Town of Milford. Carney was arrested and processed & was turned over to Corrections Staff to await arraignment, he will appear in the Milford Town Court at a later date.

State Police at Troop C responded today to the report of a vehicle with a windshield that shattered due to ice falling off of a tractor trailer on I-81. An investigation determined that a tractor trailer and a pick-up truck were traveling north on I-81 when a slab of ice flew off the tractor trailer and fell onto the pick-up behind it, the pick-up truck’s driver side front window and windshield were shattered, the driver tractor trailer did not stop, the operator of the pick-up truck, a 23-year-old male of Camden suffered hand and facial injuries, State Police remind Motorists to brush off snow and ice off their vehicles, The investigation is on-going.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 49 year old Kunga Gyamtso following an investigation of a sexual assault that occurred in the Town of Hartwick. Gyamtso is accused of subjecting a female victim to unwanted forcible sexual acts at his residence in the Town of Hartwick. Evidence was presented to the Otsego County Grand Jury which handed down an indictment for the arrest, for Rape & Criminal Sexual Act, Gyamtso was arraigned in the Otsego County Court and remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility on $40,000 cash bail or $400,000 partially secured bond. 36 year old John Pierre Regazzi of Delhi pleaded guilty to Assault, Forcible Touching and Criminal Contempt in Delaware County Court Wednesday, where he appeared for his scheduled pre-trial hearings. A jury trial was scheduled to commence on February 9, but Regazzi decided to enter a guilty plea, he will be sentenced to 5 years in state prison, to be followed by 3 years of post-release supervision, he will also be required to register as a sex offender for at least 20 years upon his release from state prison, and there will be a final order of protection in favor of the female victim. After pleading guilty, Judge Rosa remanded Regazzi back to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending sentencing on April 1.

Lawmakers have until April 1st to get the budget passed in time for the start of the next fiscal year.

Chobani announced that they awarded $400,000 in grants to 40 nonprofit groups through the eighth annual Community Impact Fund. The grants will go to organizations in Central New York, Idaho, Philadelphia and Muskegon Michigan. Locally, the Afton Central Schools will use the funds to build a greenhouse for agricultural education and to supply fresh produce for the FFA Food Pantry. The Food Bank of Central New York will support its Senior Grocery Program, the Norwich City School District will expand its backpack program, the Oneonta Middle School will provide grocery gift cards to families throughout the year, and the Cooperstown Food Pantry will use its grant to offer year-round farmers market vouchers, SNAP matching and CSA shares from regional farms.

State Forest Rangers responded to Hancock Sunday following the report of 2 hikers from Brooklyn who were lost off trail at Jensen’s Ledges. Forest Rangers spoke with the lost individuals by phone and were able to obtain their coordinates. Rangers found the hikers in about 2 hours Sunday evening and assisted them back to their vehicle. Officials remind hikers that before entering the backcountry, visit the DEC's Hike Smart NY, Adirondack Backcountry Information, and Catskill Backcountry Information webpages for more information. State Police arrested 37 year old Christopher Banks of Nineveh for Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child. A search warrant was executed on April 4th, Banks was found to be in possession of images consistent with child sexual exploitation. During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that 38 year old Mark Banks of Nineveh sexually abused a dairy cow while employed at a farm in the town of Colesville. Banks was charged with Sexual Misconduct, both were issued appearance tickets to the Colesville Town Court on April 24th.

Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force arrested 57 year old Bruce Hines of the town of Union after they executed a search warrant Thursday, Hines resisted officers and had to be detained after a brief struggle. Officers confiscated Methamphetamine, Fentanyl, Digital Scales, Packaging Material and $304 in cash, Hines was charged with multiple Counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and 2 Counts Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, plus Obstructing Governmental Administration & Resisting Arrest, he was arraigned and remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility.

The Otsego County Solid Waste Department Plastic Film Recycling Challenge ends today. Participating schools collected film plastics such as Grocery Bags, Bread bags, Bubble wrap, The winner of the each division will receive an ice cream social event soon, last year over 6 tons of the plastics were diverted out of the waste stream in otsego county.

Utica University has announced its commencement speaker for the undergraduate ceremony in 2025 will be Hamdi Ulukaya, the founder and CEO of Chobani, Ulukaya will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Utica University, he emigrated from his native Turkey in 1994 to the US, he purchased a closed factory in Edmeston in 2007 with a small business loan, Chobani became he biggest seller of Greek Yogurt in the world by 2012. Delhi firefighters responded Sunday at around 12:00 Noon for a structure fire at 220 Rosa Circle. Early reports suggest that an electric car in a garage caught fire, the structure was a total loss, WCDO will have more information when it is released.

Governor Hochul today announced preparations to call in the National Guard to staff the State Correctional Facility, if the Illegal Job Action staged by State Correction Officers; does not end tomorrow. The National Guard will be called in to protect correction officers who are currently on the job, individuals being held at Correctional Facilites as well as the surrounding communities. The Governor also directed Department of Corrections leadership and senior Administration officials to meet with leaders from the State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association to call for an end to the unlawful work stoppage. In March 2024, the union agreed to a collective bargaining agreement with the State of New York to improve working conditions for corrections officers.

State Police arrested 24 Year Old Fiona Taylor of Norwich & 47 year old Lauren McKinley of Norwich in connection with a case of animal neglect in Chenango County last month. On January 22nd, 56 animals were removed from a property on Mudge King Road in the town of North Norwich. During the execution of a search warrant, 30 horses, a pig, 7 sheep, 4 goats, 4 chickens, 7 dogs and 3 cats were in need of immediate care and were transported to various local animal rescue locations, 12 dead animals were observed on the property that included horses, goats, pigs and chickens. Taylor & McKinley have been charged with 16 counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals and 65 counts of Overdriving, Torturing and Injuring Animals; Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance Both women were issued appearance tickets and are scheduled to appear at the North Norwich Town Court on February 26th.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 31 year old Skyler Smith of East Meredith for Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On Saturday Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Smith, who was found to be in possession of an illegal switchblade knife. Smith was additionally charged for a traffic violation and was released on appearance tickets and is to appear in the Town Delhi Court at a later date to answer the said charges.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office announced that a Oneonta man was arrested on an Arrest Warrant issued by the Town of Delhi Court. On June 29th, 2023, Sheriff Deputies responded to a reported Domestic Dispute in Delhi, Deputies had applied for & received an Arrest Warrant for Daquan Brown for Aggravated Harassment and Criminal Mischief, Monday evening, Town of Colchester Police responded to a report of a car in a snow bank, the operator was Daquan Brown who was taken in to custody by deputies on the warrant. he was turned over to the Delaware County Correctional facility for Arrangement.

New York State is waiving registration fees for out-of-state snowmobilers on 2 weekends this winter - February 28th through March 2 and again March 7th through the 9th, so that snowmobilers can ride on over 10,000 miles of snowmobile trails in New York State. Calling hours & Funeral arrangements have been announced for Binghamton Firefighter John Gaudet, who died fighting a fire at 1 Main Street last Wednesday evening. The Gaudet family will receive friends at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, located in Binghamton, today from 1:00 to 5:00 PM, the funeral mass will be held Wednesday Morning at 11:30 AM at the same location. The official cause of death for Gaudet has not yet been announced, he served for 11 years with the Binghamton Fire Department.

Governor Kathy Hochul today is warning New York consumers of E-ZPass text message scams. Consumers have reported receiving SMS text messages attempting to collect tolls. These fake texts are often sent from an international number and request the consumer to reply with "Y" to receive a link to an unofficial website. Consumers should be aware that E-ZPass or Tolls by Mail will never send a text or email requesting sensitive personal information. On February 11th, State Police conducted an Underage Drinking detail in Otsego County. All of the businesses checked were in compliance and did not sell alcohol to an underage operative. 19 year old Benjamin Wheeler of Norwich pleaded guilty in federal court to possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle, Wheeler admitted that on August 6, 2024, he knowingly possessed a “Spikes Tactical” AR-15 style rifle at his apartment in Norwich, New York, The firearm was not registered to Wheeler, Sentencing for his conviction for possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle is scheduled for February 12, 2025, in Utica, he faces a maximum sentence of up to 10-years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000.00, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 40 year old Whitney Bachanas of Milford on 3 counts of Aggravated Animal Cruelty, following a recent animal abuse investigation. Bachanas was charged following an investigation in collaboration with Susquehanna SPCA, Cornell University Veterinary Hospital and Upstate Veterinary Specialties, she was originally charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty in September, and has been additionally charged with 3 counts of Aggravated Animal Cruelty, she was issued an appearance ticket for town of Milford Court.

A Delaware County Grand Jury returned a 4-count indictment against 41 year old Darcee Lewis of Oxford, for 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and 2 counts of Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia. On August 14th, a search warrant was executed by the Village of Sidney Police Based on information provided by State Parole Officers, they located narcotics and drug paraphernalia, Lewis is accused of possessing methamphetamine, fentanyl with intent to sell, as well as scales, loaded needles, and packaging materials. Lewis was arraigned & was remanded on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.

32 year old Evan Middleton of Johnson City, was sentenced today as a Second time Felony Offender to 12 years in State Prison followed by 3 years post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance On April 6, 2023, after the execution of a narcotics search warrant at Middleton's residence at 58 Massachusetts Ave in Johnson City, Middleton was found to be in possession of fentanyl and methamphetamine, with the intent to sell.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 43 year old Whitney Bachanas of Milford woman for animal cruelty after Deputies responded to County Highway 35 in the Town of Milford for a welfare check. Bachanas was charged with Abandonment of Animals, Failure to provide proper sustenance, Deputies located several animals abandoned, malnourished and mistreated. 2 emaciated dogs in critical condition were transported to Cornell University animal hospital. A 3rd dog was located deceased as well as a turkey and a quail. 2 quail were rescued for foster and rehabilitation. The Susquehanna SPCA, Cornell University and Farm Friends Network assisted in this rescue and investigation. Bachanas was issued appearance tickets and is set to appear in court at a later date.

State Police issued 10,949 tickets and arrested 225 people for DWI on Memorial Day weekend. The special enforcement period began on Friday, May 24, 2024, and ran through Monday, May 27th, in the Troop C Area, there were 770 total arrests, 11 for DWI, 192 for speeding & 234 violated the child restraint & seat belts laws.

31 year old Cachet Fernandez of Unadilla was convicted of Failing to Register as a Sex Offender, on Monday in Delaware County Court, Fernandez appeared in Delaware County Court for a conference on his pending case, after the conference, he pleaded guilty to the indictment. Fernandez relocated from Delaware County to Binghamton, but never changed his address with the State Sex Offender Registry. Judge John Hubbard sentenced Fernandez to a 3-year conditional discharge, if he fails to keep his address current during that 3-year period, or violates any laws, he is subject to being re-sentenced to 1 and 1/3 to 4 years in state prison.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the ratification of a three-year labor agreement with the Police Benevolent Association of New York State, which includes more than 1,100 members of the New York State Agency Police Services Unit in titles such as Forest Ranger, Environmental Conservation Officer, Park Patrol Officer and University Police Officer. The agreement, which runs until March 31, 2026, won the approval of 97 percent of PBA of New York State members who cast ballots.

An audit released by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli found Medicaid managed care organizations made as much as $1.5 billion in improper and questionable payments to providers who did not appear to be enrolled in Medicaid. 5 Managed care Organization were paid $916 million in claims for services by in-network providers whose IDs did not match with a Medicaid enrolled provider on the date of service, $832.5 million in claims were for services by providers whose Medicaid application was denied or had been withdrawn because they failed to meet Medicaid standards or the application was missing information. Broome County Sheriff's deputies responded last Thursday to a report of inappropriate behavior and abuse of a juvenile female victim in the Town of Maine, where a family acquaintance had conducted several inappropriate physical and sexual interactions with a child. 74 year old Mark Turner of the Town of Maine was charged with 4 Counts of Sexual Abuse, he was arrested and taken into custody without incident and was being held for Court action at the Broome County Correctional Facility.

39 year old Timothy Jarczynski of Maryland pleaded guilty to DWI in Davenport Town Court & was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge. On September 28, 2022, a citizen called 911 to report an erratic driver on State Route 23, after following Jarczynski for approximately 10 minutes, he crashed into a ditch where a State Trooper determined that Jarczynski was impaired at the time of the accident. Jarczynski was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge and his license was revoked, he was ordered to attend a victim impact panel and successfully complete the impaired driver’s program, If he obtains a driver’s license, he will be required to install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle he owns or operates, he could still face 1 year in jail if he violates any of these conditions.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 23 year old Jarrett Griffin of Walton on an arrest warrant issued out of the Town of Tompkins Court. On April 4th, Deputies located Griffin and arrested him, Griffin is accused of making threats over texts and Facebook, he's been charged with 3 counts of Aggravated Harassment, he was processed, and turned over to the custody of the Delaware County Jail for future court action.

45 year old Katrina Lott of West Edmeston pleaded guilty to Driving While Intoxicated and was sentenced to 3 years of probation, in Deposit Town Court last week. On June 13, 2023, Lott was driving on County Route 8, when she lost control of her vehicle and drove into the ditch. A State Trooper responded to the crash scene and determined that Lott was likely under the influence of alcohol when open containers were spotted in the vehicle. Lott had a BAC of .16% - two times the legal limit.

2 Law Enforcement officers were killed, and the suspect was also killed in an incident in Liverpool Sunday night. Syracuse Police Officers encountered a suspicious vehicle Sunday Night, they attempted a traffic stop & the vehicle took off, officers did get the License plate number, it was traced to a Liverpool address to stop the vehicle, Syracuse Police & Onondaga Sheriff's Deputies responded & were encountered by an armed male and an exchange of gunfire followed. One Syracuse Police Officer and one Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy were struck by gunfire. The armed suspect was also shot, all 3 were taken to Upstate University Hospital, all 3 succumbed to their injuries.

The Acco Brands plant in Sidney is being sold, Acco Officials said that the company signed a non-binding letter of intent to sell the building to a renewable energy company, if the building is sold in 2024, operations would continue in Sidney throughout much of 2024. CONVALT of Watertown is believed to be the purchaser as they announced on their website their plans to build their main factory, in Sidney with a targeted date of commercial operation in the 1st quarter of 2025.

24-year-old Kelvin Marfo of Delhi was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operator of a Motor Vehicle, plus other charges following an accident investigation. On April 6th Deputies responded to an iPhone Crash Detection for a motor vehicle accident on State Highway 28 in the Town of Meredith. Deputies found the motor vehicle accident, 2 of the occupants were transported for non-life-threatening injuries to a local hospital, while 2 others were treated by EMS. Marfo’s driving privileges were suspended for Failing to Answer a Summons, Marfo was issued an Appearance Ticket to appear before the Town of Meredith Court at a later date.

Last Wednesday, Oneonta Police Department was called to investigate a reported gunshot wound by A.O. Fox hospital emergency room staff. Officers learned that 51-year-old John Walley of Otego was transported to the hospital by a third party in a private vehicle, which left before police arrived. Walley was interviewed briefly and stated that he was on Chestnut Street when he was injured by a bullet, no evidence at the scene was found, he was re-interviewed & has refused to cooperate. The case will be closed but may be re-opened should additional information be received and the victim agree to cooperate. Chief Gilmore said that the cause fire is under investigation by Sidney Fire Department as well as County & State Fire investigators. This Morning, Sidney Police Chief Eric Oliver told WCDO News that the deceased from the Pearl Street East Fire has been identified as 72 year old Juanita Meredith.

The Susquehanna SPCA & the Otsego County Sheriff's Department responded to the Town of Laurens for the report of a possible dog-abandonment case. Deputies discovered 5 dogs deceased in garbage bags and 4 who appeared to have abandoned, the 4 were removed & are currently being cared for at the Susquehanna SPCA, the 5 deceased animals were brought to Cornell University for forensic examinations. The Sheriff's Office is looking for the owner of the dogs, the investigation is continuing. Delaware County Sheriff's office arrested 45- year-old James Simmons of Canandaigua for DWI and other charges following a traffic stop on February 11th. Deputies were patrolling on State Highway 17 in the Town of Colchester and observed a vehicle without a front license plate, a traffic stop was conducted & Simmons was charged with DWI, Aggravated DWI, Aggravated Unlicensed Operator and Open Container of an alcoholic beverage, Simmons was released on tickets returnable to the Town of Colchester Court at a later date to answer the charges.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 18 yr old Arianna Blazek of Queens for driving while ability impaired by drugs. On December 11th, Deputies responded to a one car motor vehicle accident on Scotch Mountain Road in the Town of Delhi, Deputies determined that Blazek was impaired by drugs at the time of the accident. Deputies arrested Blazek last week following the results of a blood test, for driving while ability impaired by drugs, Speed not reasonable and prudent and unsafe tires, she was released on tickets returnable to the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

Last Night, The Unadilla Fire Department & several area Fire Departments responded to a fire in Unadilla at 1762 State Route 7, in that fire occupants escaped, the cause of that fire is also under investigation this morning.

State Police responded early Monday morning to a domestic dispute at 10 Debra Lee Drive, Apalachin. Troopers and EMS personnel provided lifesaving treatment to an injured male and female at the scene. The female died as a result of injuries sustained during the domestic dispute. The injured male was transported to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, where he currently remains in stable condition. This incident remains under investigation.

Commerce Chenango announced that they will host a State Budget presentation on February 20th. The discussion will be held at the Commerce Chenango Offices at 15 South Broad Street starting at 3:00 PM.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 27 year old Cody Leonard of Binghamton for Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation, Endangering the Welfare of a Child & Harassment, following a Domestic Dispute in November 2023. Shortly after the incident occurred, Leonard was incarcerated at the Broome County Jail on unrelated charges & an arrest warrant was issued. Leonard faces court action on the newest charges shortly.

The Broome County Sheriff's office arrested 35 year old Kasandra Wolfran of Port Crane for DWI, Aggravated DWI, Operating a vehicle with a suspended registration & Moving from a lane unsafely after a car-tractor trailer accident on Route 17 West in the Town of Union. Deputies responded Friday to a report of a motor vehicle accident, video footage recorded by the tractor trailer's camera revealed that Wolfran attempted to cut in front of the tractor trailer & her car was struck by the tractor trailer & they both headed for the median, where they struck & damaged the guardrail, with the tractor trailer dumping its load of aluminum spools. Deputies reported that Wolfran had a BAC of .18, more than double the legal limit, she was arrested, arraigned and released on an appearance ticket for Town of Union Court later this month.

35 year old William Polhamus of Harpursville appeared in Delaware County Court Monday for sentencing on 1 count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. On July 4th, 2023, Walton Police responded to a physical domestic dispute in progress, where Polhamus physically assaulted a woman in front of a minor child, he then took another minor child and had drove off on a motorcycle, he then led Walton police in a chase, weaving through traffic, the chase was stopped & State Police located & arrested Polhamus, he was sentenced to 1 year in jail, he was ordered to pay a crime victim’s fee and was assessed the mandatory state surcharge.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced State University of New York campuses are investing nearly $10 million to provide 3,000 SUNY students with internships before graduation. SUNY Chancellor John King visited SUNY Delhi, where he met with students and business leaders to discuss internship opportunities and the ways SUNY can create a workforce development pipeline in Delaware County and across the state. All 29 campuses will increase the number of paid internship slots for undergraduate students.

The State Department of Parks, Recreation & Youth Services announced today that the annual Winterfest, originally scheduled for February 10th, at Nathaniel Cole Park has been canceled. Officials stated that there was insufficient snow and ice to accommodate the usual scheduled activities.

Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti announced that Josie Valdes-Pica of Binghamton, pleaded guilty to Attempted Assault & 2nd & 3rd Degree Assault just before the start of jury selection. On November 7, 2022, Valdes-Pica struck a female victim multiple times with a metal baseball bat, he is facing 3.5 to 15 years in a State Correctional Facility, followed by 5 years post-release supervision. Sentencing is scheduled for May 3, 2024, in Broome County Court.

Broome County Sheriff's Office announced that a corrections investigation led to a an arrest of an inmate at the Correctional Facility. Investigators received information on a homemade instrument, Officers initiated a search of several cells, 19 year old Alixander Lavelle had the solid, sharpened piece of plastic from under the mattress in Lavelle’s cell, he was charged with Promoting Prison Contraband, he was processed and will answer for his charges at the Town of Dickinson Court on a future date.

Local government sales tax collections totaled $23 billion in calendar year 2023, up 4.2%, from 2022, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. New York City's sales tax growth was 5.9% in 2023 for the rest of the state was 2.4%, much of the increase was attributed to the return of tourism to per-pandemic levels.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced today the 6 designated Free Fishing Days in New York will take place on: February 17 to 18, June 29 to 30, September 28, and November 11 for Veterans Day. During these days, the fishing license requirement is waived for freshwater fishing on New York’s waters.

Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 2.5% in October compared to the same month in 2022, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Overall, local collections totaled nearly $1.8 billion, up $43.5 million compared to the same time last year. County and city collections outside of New York City totaled $880 million, an increase of 2.2%. 45 out of 57 counties experienced some year-over-year increase.

Enrollment across the State University of New York campuses increased from year to year, for the first time in a decade. The Governor's Office reported that the year-to-year total system-wide student enrollment increased, 1.1% overall, 367,542 students. Undergraduate first-time enrollment was up across all sectors at 4.3% The technology sector showed the strongest increase at 13.3%, followed by community colleges at 3.9 percent.

NY State of Health announced the beginning of its annual open enrollment period for health insurance. The House Ethics panel says it has found "substantial evidence" of lawbreaking by Congressman George Santos, and has referred its findings to the Justice Department. The committee said Thursday that Santos' conduct warrants public condemnation, is beneath the dignity of the office, and has brought severe discredit upon the House. Santos has maintained his innocence and refused to resign despite calls from many of his colleagues to do so. Santos is accused of knowingly making his campaign committee file false or incomplete reports with the Federal Election Commission, among other misdeeds.

The State Department of Labor announced that the number of private sector jobs in New York State decreased over the month by 10,300, or 0.1%, to 8,252,000 in October. The State's unemployment rate increased from 4.0% in September to 4.2% in October, while the State's labor force decreased by 1,900, the statewide labor force participation rate held constant at 61.6%.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident on the I-88 West / I-81 South overpass in the Town of Chenango yesterday morning involving 6 different vehicles. The investigation found that a pickup truck was traveling westbound on the I-88 overpass when the vehicle hit a patch of ice and flipped onto its hood. The 2nd vehicle behind the truck was able to stop before a collision could occur, but the next four vehicles all hit the ice, were unable to stop and collided with the vehicle two and each other. The accident led to the closure of I-88 westbound near Exit 2 for several hours for cleanup. 2 of the drivers were transported to Wilson and Lourdes hospital respectively for minor injuries. The ice was caused by a parked construction site water truck that was leaking water onto the highway. No charges have been filed at this time.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 43-year-old Misty Cintron, and 50-year-old Brandon Hendricks, both of Sidney, for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Cintron was also charged with Tampering with Physical Evidence, Hendricks was also charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On November 1st, the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division executed a search warrant at Division Street, Cintron and Hendricks were present, officers seized over $1,000 in cash from suspected proceeds from drug sales, and 254 wax envelopes containing Fentanyl. Following arraignment on November 2nd, Cintron was released to reappear at a later date, Hendricks is being held due to the weapons possession charge.

44 year old Andre Gilliam of Binghamton was arrested after a search warrant was executed on Tuesday. The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force Tuesday executed a search warrant at 174 1/2 Castle Creek Road in the Town of Chenango, they seized Fentanyl, Scales and cutting agent used for the distribution of narcotics, plus $3,790 in cash from suspected drug sales. Gilliam was charged with multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & 2 Counts of Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, he was transported to the Broome County Correctional Facility for processing and to await arraignment at Central Arraignment.

The Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 34 year old James Gay of North Norwich for Driving While Ability Impaired by drugs, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, following a traffic stop for an equipment violation in the Town of Norwich. During the investigation of the traffic stop, James was exhibiting signs of recent drug use and failed the field sobriety testing. While being taken into custody James was found with a small amount of Methamphetamine. James was processed and released on appearance Tickets to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

Oneonta Police Department Announced an update to their earlier investigation in the Spruce Street area on October 28th. Oneonta Officers were investigating a noise complaint, they heard what sounded like a shot from a firearm, they responded to the area with State Troopers & State University Police. The ongoing investigation revealed that there had been a conflict at a party with all involved ending up on Spruce Street, 1 male was said to have pulled something from his mid-section discharged it at close range at another male. No witnesses described seeing a handgun. Investigators do not believe that this was a functioning firearm, and that the suspect fled the area and is currently in New York City. The investigation is continuing, anyone with information is asked to call the Oneonta Police Department at (607) 432-1111.

Today, the Governor's Office sent state agencies to Assist Local governments IN Sullivan County following Saturday's Tornado in Callicoon Center and Roscoe. The State Department of Agriculture and Markets Encourages Affected Farms to Contact U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency to Report Damage. The National Weather Service in Binghamton determined the tornado was an EF2, with maximum winds of 115 mph. The tornado traveled 10 miles with a maximum width of 300 yards.

Law Enforcement Agencies around the state are participating in "Operation Safe Stop Day" today, where police officers are checking to see if motorists are stopping for school busses with their flashing lights on, picking up or dropping off students. It is estimated that 50-thousand New Yorkers illegally pass stopped school buses each day that school is in session. Penalties for a first-time offense include a fine of up to 400 dollars, five points on a person's drivers license and possibly 30 days in jail.

The family of Jorge Jimenez, who was fatally struck by a vehicle driven by former Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim in February 2019, has agreed to settle a lawsuit against Boeheim. Terms of the settlement will remain sealed, Jimenez was a passenger in a car that that skidded on Interstate 690 and hit a guardrail. Boeheim was driving home after a game when he swerved to avoid the car and hit Jimenez, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Boeheim was not charged by police investigating the crash.

32-year-old Kyle Packer was arrested by Otsego County Sheriff's deputies following a domestic dispute in Edmeston. Packer allegedly choked a victim & several items were also damaged, he left the scene, but was later arrested on a separate outstanding warrant for allegedly trying to use a fake $100 bill to purchase items at a retail establishment. Packer was charged with Strangulation, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, Criminal Mischief, Harassment, Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument & Petty Larceny, he is being held in the Otsego County Jail pending arraignment.

State Police & other Law Enforcement Agencies are reminding New Yorkers to follow the "Move Over" law, which requires drivers to change lanes away from emergency responders, tow trucks & police vehicles responding to emergencies on the state's highway. The message was announced again after a driver slammed into the back an a van assisting a motorist in the Hudson valley, flipping another vehicle into the air, there were no injuries according to DMV officials. The Move Over Law has been in effect since 2012 in New York State.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 26 year old Tiger Gould of Unadilla following a warrant investigation for the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office. Gould was charged with Criminal Possession of Controlled Substance, he was found to be in possession of methamphetamine, he was issued an appearance ticket in the Town of Unadilla Court at a later date, he was turned over to Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on the Bench Warrant.

The Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that Kyle Babola of Johnson City pleaded guilty for killing Scott Groover with a machete in 2021. Babola took a plea deal of 20 years to life before the trial could start, the maximum sentence could have been 25 years to life in prison.

The Delaware County Chamber of Commerce announced that potential public transportation options for Delaware County will be the topic of a presentation on May 16 at 11:00 am in the Meeting Room of the Delaware County Business Center at 5 ½ Main Street in Delhi. The Chamber has been working with County and State officials, private transportation operators, healthcare and human service organizations, regional employers, and national transportation associations on a 7-month study of public transit options. The State Labor Department released preliminary local area unemployment rates for March. The State's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 4.2% in February to 4.1% in March. Locally, Chenango County had 3.5%, Delaware County 3.9% and Otsego County 3.8% unemploment in March.

The New York State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for February 2023. Rates are calculated using methods prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. New York State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment held constant at 4.2% in February 2023. Locally, Chenango County had 4.1% unemployment, Delaware County had 4.5% and Otsego County 4.4% unemployment in February.

The State DOT announced that construction began to replace the existing bridge carrying NY Route 79 over the Chenango River in the Towns of Fenton and Barker in Broome County, with a new bridge realigning NY Route 79. State and Federal funding totaled $12.6 million for the project, which is scheduled for completion this Fall.

The Broome County District Attorney's office is still pursuing the Colonial restaurant Rape case, after the owners sought to have the charges dismissed against them last month. The DA's office said that Jordan Rindgen, Yaron Kweller and his brother Leor Kweller are accused of supplying cocaine to 2 young women and then raping them in a basement on Washington Street in downtown Binghamton on November 27th, 2021. The Colonial Restaurant and Bar and Dos Rios Cantina, both owned by the defendants, have both since closed since the allegations went public & the charges were filed.

Walton fire fighters responded to 14 Tripp Avenue in Walton last Wednesday for a shed and a garage fire that spread to a nearby house. Firefighters arrived to the scene, 2 occupants had escaped the fire, 2 neighboring homes were evacuated, The shed and garage were destroyed, home suffered significant damage on the second floor, 1 firefighter suffered a minor injury and was treated at the scene. Walton was assisted by Delhi and Trout Creek Fire Departments, Sidney Fire Department’s FAST team. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 63 year old Patrick Logan for failure to register under the sex offender registration act; Logan was taken to the Central Arraignment Part Court at the Broome County Correction Facility for arraignment.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 34 year old Justin Terenzi of Berkshire, for failing to appear for a court date in January of 2023 after being previously arraigned on a charge. Terenzi was charged with Bail Jumping & was taken to the Central Arraignment for arraignment.

The Village of Sidney announced that today water lines will be shut off beginning at 9:00 am until approximately 6:00pm. This will affect Route 7, Deshaw Lane, Route 8, Old County Route 43, Junction Road and County Road 35. This is due to new water main connections being installed.

The Village of Sidney Police Department responded yesterday afternoon at about 2:50 PM, to the report of a unconscious female lying in the middle of Sunset Avenue. Police were advised that the female had been struck by a vehicle, 14 year old Anielle McEwan-Lomnicki was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City & was transferred to SUNY Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse where she remains in stable but critical condition with bleeding & pressure on the brain, an upper spine fracture & fractured ribs according to family, The driver, 31 year old Courtni Baker of Sidney left the scene and returned a short time later, she was charged with Aggravated DWI, with a BAC of .18 or higher, plus DWI, Leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, Reckless Driving, Vehicular Assault & Escape for allegedly attempting to leave the Police Station, along with several other lesser charges. Baker was arraigned in the Town of Delhi court where she was remanded to the Delaware County Jail without bail. The investigation is ongoing which could result in more charges being filed.

The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that 3 people died and another was hospitalized after they were hit by a car in Newark Valley Wednesday afternoon. According to the Sheriff’s Office, an 18-year-old man was driving south on State Route 38 around 11:20 am Wednesday and hit 4 pedestrians walking on the shoulder. 66 year old John Stephens, 25 year old Kurtis Acker & 52 year old Doreen Wood were killed, a 27-year-old woman was flown to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse in critical condition. All 4 pedestrians were from Newark Valley.

The Broome County District Attorney's office announced that 37 year old Ronald Bodden of Binghamton pleaded guilty to promoting prison contraband in Broome County Court. Bodden admitted that he possessed methamphetamines while in the County Jail on an unrelated charge, he will serve 2 to 4 years in prison on the new charges starting on March 23rd.

19 year old Payton Gendron of Conklin was sentenced to life in prison without parole yesterday, for the mass shooting of 10 people in May of 2022 at a Tops grocery store in Buffalo. Gendron pleaded guilty in November to 15 charges, including murder, attempted murder & Domestic Terrorism motivated by Hate in a state court room, today Gendron faces Federal Court action, if convicted on the federal charges, he could face the death penalty.

State Police arrested 44 year old Rodney Oakley of Plymouth, for Scheming to Defraud, 5 counts of 4th degree Grand Larceny & 8 counts of Petty Larceny. State Police received a report last November that Oakley, who was the town Highway Department Superintendent, was allegedly using town money for his own personal use, it was determined that since December 2020 Oakley allegedly had been using town funds to purchase various car parts, tools and materials for his own personal use, he was issued an appearance for the town of Plymouth Court on February 22nd.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the 2023 dates for Free Freshwater Fishing Days in New York. The requirement for a fishing license is waived during the 6 days this year: February 18 to 19; June 24 to 25; September 23; and November 11. More information is available at dec.ny.gov.

The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, is asking for those who attended the original Woodstock Music & Arts festival at that site in 1969, to come forward & share their story. The Center is conducting its "Oral Histories Project" to document the memories of fans who attended the event. U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced $1,162,978 to 2 local homeless housing and services organizations. In New York, HUD awarded a total of $2,042,599.  The Binghamton, Town of Union, Otsego, Chenango, Delaware, Cortland, and Tioga Counties Continuum of Care received $716,456 for Opportunities for Otsego and $446,522 for Catholic Charities of Chenango County.

Several area Fire Departments responded to a structure fire at 440 St. John Road in Afton early this morning. On Saturday night, Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies conducted a traffic stop in the Town of Colchester, Deputies identified the driver of the vehicle as 44-year-old Tyrece Williams of Syracuse, who's vehicle registration was suspended, due to an Insurance Lapse. Williams was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended/Revoked Registration, Aggravated Unlicensed Operator, Failing to turn in license plates into DMV, among other charges, Williams was released and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Colchester Court at a later date.

About a dozen people were arrested at a protest at the Johnson City Wegman's Parking lot last night. People were protesting the police brutality cases of Tyre Nichols in Memphis & the Hamail Waddell keeling incident by Binghamton Police January 1st. Police from the Johnson City, Binghamton and Endicott Police departments, as well as the Broome County sheriffs Deputies and State Troopers responded.

The State Department of Labor announced that the number of private sector jobs in the State increased by 3,700 to 8,063,000 in October. The State's unemployment rate increased .1% to 4.4% in October. State Police responded Monday to a report of a 1-vehicle crash on County Highway 7 in the town of Otego. 45 year old Jennifer Thayer of Otego was driving on County Highway 7 when she exited the roadway and struck a tree. Thayer was transported to A.O. Fox Hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

The State DOT is advising motorists that the ramp from I-88 westbound to I-81 northbound in the Town of Chenango, will be closed today from 9:00 to 12:00 Noon for overhead sign inspection. A detour will direct traffic to I-81 Southbound for entry to I-81 Northbound at Exit 5.

Binghamton Police Department responded Monday to 314 Prospect Street for the report of a shooting. Officers located a 26 year old male who was shot in the abdomen, he was taken to an area hospital for emergency surgery. Sidney Area 1st Responders were dispatched to the report of a tractor trailer going into a ditch in the south bound lane of State Route 8 South of Sidney This Morning. Crews emptied the contents of the trailer for several hours, the vehicle was being removed from the site earlier this afternoon.

Fire Companies from Broome and Chenango Counties responded early this morning to a house fire at 101 Sapbush Road in the Town of Barker at about 3:30 AM. Fire Fighters from Chenango Forks, Whitney Point, Lisle, Greene, Smithville among others were called to the scene, occupants in nearby houses were evacuated, no injuries were reported, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Police responded to the report of a Bomb Threat at the Heath Sciences Building on Corliss Avenue in Johnson City Friday. The threat is being investigated by the University Police Department & local law enforcement agencies & the FBI, the threat was deemed not credible & the building was opened again on Saturday. The investigation is continuing & no arrests have been announced.

The State Health Department reported on the latest COVID Statistics Friday, the Positivity rate was almost 8.5% with 6502 positive cases in more than 74,000 Tests. There were 2550 people hospitalized statewide with 224 patients in an ICU, with 81 on Ventilators, there were 20 more deaths reported in Hospitals & Nursing Homes, 73,028 have died from COVID since 2020.

Broome County DA's office announced that 42 year old Matthew Bowden of Deposit, pleaded guilty to felony Criminal Contempt. In 2021, Bowden Violated a court order of protection by harassing the protected party named in the order. He was sentenced to 1 to 3 years in New York State Prison.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the successful implementation of 988 in New York State as the new three-digit number to call or text to be connected to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. All 62 counties in New York State will be covered for the launch of the new 988 Lifeline, which will ensure that anyone with a New York area code contacting 988 will be connected to one of New York's 988 crisis centers. In 2020, NYS received 142,827 calls, a 13 percent increase in just one year.

The Tops supermarket store in Buffalo, which was the site of a mass shooting that killed 10 people on May 14th, will reopen to the public this Friday. The store has been closed & underwent extensive renovations since the shooting, 18 year old Payton Gendron of Conklin is being held on 10 counts of 1st-degree murder, 2nd-degree murder as a hate crime and 3 counts of attempted murder as a hate crime, he is being held without bail pending future court action.

The Susquehanna SPCA is looking to find homes for 12 dogs that would do best in families without small children or other pets. Their “Singles Night: Meet Your One and Only Pet” will be held on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the shelter on State Route 28. Tioga Downs Casino Resort President and CEO Jeff Gural has been nominated by President Joe Biden to join his administration, as the chair of the Public Buildings Reform Board. The Board is an independent agency used to identify opportunities for the Federal government to significantly reduce its inventory of civilian real property, which would cut costs. Gural is expected to accept the nomination.

39 year-old Isaac Anzaroot of Brooklyn was arrested today by the Binghamton Police Warrant Division. Anzaroot is the owner of numerous properties in the city, he was wanted on 12 bench warrants and 2 arrest warrants related to housing code violations & for failing to appear in court to answer those violations. The Binghamton Code Department condemned the First National Bank building at 95 Court due to fire alarm system issues, which forced many of Anzaroot's tenants to locate elsewhere.

The State DOT will be installing a new water main on State Route 7; Main Street in Otego, starting today, to facilitate a pavement, sidewalk and drainage project. Work will result in a short interruption of water service to village residents beginning at 10:00 AM, for about 3 hours.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli's office issued a follow up report on a 2019 audit of the Hancock Fire Department. The audit included recommendations for rental payments, disbursements made by the Treasurer and collections from the clothing organization, ambulance corporation and fundraising activities. Auditors revisited the department this year, the department has had 1 of 10 recommendations implemented, 3 were partially implemented and 6 were not implemented.

Norwich City Police arrested 42 year old Todd Jackson of Norwich for allegedly setting a dumpster on fire at a Norwich senior living facility in the early morning hours on Saturday, April 30th. The fire damaged the dumpster & surrounding fences, The Norwich Fire department quickly extinguished the fire and no injuries were reported. Jackson was arrested Thursday for 2nd & 3rd degree criminal mischief and 5th degree arson, he was arraigned in Norwich City Court and held on $10,000 bail.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 45 year old Chad Jackson of Binghamton, was found guilty of 2nd degree burglary, On March 28, 2020, Jackson broke into a room at the Del Motel on Upper Court Street in Kirkwood and stole items from a person inside. He is facing up to 15 years in prison and faces sentencing August 8th.

The Chenango County District Attorney's Office announced that Cody Coleman of Smithville Flats was sentenced to 20 years in prison & 5 years post-release Supervision as part of a plea deal for 1st-degree manslaughter for the death of 16 year old Amelia Wakefield 2 years ago. Coleman pleaded guilty for the fatal shooting of Wakefield with a shotgun on May 3rd, 2019 at his residence in Smithville Flats.

State Police and multiple agencies responded Sunday Afternoon at about 4:35 PM to a 1 vehicle crash off Interstate 81 south at the exit 1 off ramp in Kirkwood. The driver, 40-year-old Andrew Morley of Windsor, was transported to Wilson Hospital with serious injuries. A 14-year-old male passenger of Windsor was pronounced deceased after being transported from the scene & a 12-year-old female passenger of Windsor, was eventually taken to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse with serious injuries. The crash remains under investigation.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand visited the Center of Excellence at Binghamton University to announce her bipartisan "Made in America Manufacturing Communities Act of 2022" , which incentivizes private-public partnerships by empowering the Secretary of Commerce to designate “Manufacturing Communities,” which would be eligible for federal financial and technical assistance. The bill would also help strengthen the U.S. manufacturing base and help local businesses cut through bureaucratic red tape to address ongoing pandemic-related supply chain disruptions.

Governor Hochul signed an executive order forbidding New York Businesses from doing business with Russia, including canceling its investments there. The state will not permit its own investment activity to aid Russia as it attacks Ukraine, Governor Hochul also said New York will welcome Ukrainian refugees in response to Russia’s invasion. New York is home to the largest Ukrainian population in the United States.

Several area Fire Departments responded to a fire at about 6:35 Sunday Night in Hamden on State Route 10. Hamden fire fighters were assisted by fire departments from Walton, Bovina, Delhi, Franklin, Oneonta, the fire was quickly extinguished, damage was minimal & the cause of the fire is under investigation, no injuries were reported.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced plans to end the state mask requirement in schools starting Wednesday. The number of children testing positive for COVID is declining to levels not seen since before students returned from summer break; in the past six weeks, the State established 261 #VaxForKids sites, and distributed 4.8 million COVID test kits to schools.

The Governor's Office & the State Health Department reported that the downward trend in COVID positivity rates declined on Saturday. Over 97,000 people were tested, with 1671 Total Positives, for a positivity rate of 1.71%. Patients hospitalization were down to 1,911, Patients in ICU were down to 342, the number on ventilators was 191, there were 20 new deaths reported by healthcare facilities Saturday.

Delaware County Public Health reported 42 new positive cases of COVID 19 for the week of February 19th through the 25th. COVID related deaths were up to 15 for the year.
