Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies responded on August 20th, to a 2 car motor vehicle accident in the Town of Sidney, in which one driver had reportedly left the scene. With the assistance of the Village of Sidney Police Department, the driver was identified as 38-year-old Joshua Crisell of Sidney, and the vehicle was located at a residence in Sidney. Deputies charged Crisell with Reckless Driving, driving to left of pavement markings, failure to keep right and leaving the scene of a property damage accident, Crisell was released on an appearance ticket for the Town of Sidney Town Court at a later date.

Norwich High School will hold its inaugural Hall of Distinction induction ceremony on Saturday at 4:30 PM in the senior high school. Committee member Anthony Testani told WCDO news who is being recognized:

The Hall of Distinction Committee is currently accepting nominations for future classes of honorees. Nomination forms can be found on the school district website norwichcsd.org, under the documents heading. Also, The Norwich High School Alumni Weekend Special will be held at the Norwich VFW Saturday night from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. The Beadle Brothers will perform & money raised will go the the Norwich Volunteer Fire Association & the Norwich VFW.

The Sidney Alumni Association will hold their alumni weekend Friday through Sunday Afternoon, after missing last year's event due to the COVID pandemic.  Spokesman Bryan Innes told WCDO news of some of the highlights:

Organizers for The Ron Palmer Memorial Scholarship Fund concert fundraiser announced that the concert has been moved this Saturday indoors to the Norwich American Legion on Sheldon Street in Norwich, due to expected wet weather.  The Concert will feature many local musicians & the show is scheduled from 12:00 noon to 7:00pm.  Organizer & Local musician Bruce Beadle told WCDO News about the legacy of Ron Palmer & how this scholarship came about:

State Police are investigating multiple burglaries at seasonal residences in Chenango, Delaware and Otsego counties. 23 year old Christopher Youngs of the town of Maryland and 27 year old John Clark of Morris have been charged with 2nd degree Burglary and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property for burglaries in Otsego and Delaware counties.  Youngs was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $50,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond.  Clark was remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.  The investigation is ongoing; anyone with information should contact State Police at Troop C in Sidney at 561-7400.

State Police arrested 33 year old Johnny Rivera of South Glens Falls for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, following an accident on Delaware County Road 4 in the Town of Sidney.  A trooper found an unoccupied Rent-A-Center Van that crashed into the guide rail, which had been reported stolen from Glens Falls, Rivera was walking away from the scene, he was taken to Tri-Town Hospital for the treatment of injuries then he was arraigned in Sidney Town Court & was released on his own recognizance and scheduled to reappear on July 22nd.

Sidney Police Department arrested 66 year old Paul Ferron of  Sidney for Aggravated unlicensed operation in the 1st degree,  Aggravated DWI with a BAC .18 or greater, Driving while intoxicated, and several tickets for traffic infractions following a recent traffic stop.  Ferron was released on appearance tickets to appear in Village of Sidney Court at a later date.

Governor Cuomo announced $357 million in funding for the renewal of 135 paving projects throughout the State. Locally $42.4 million will go for rehabilitating I-88 from exit 17 Colliersville/Cooperstown Junction to exit 18 Schenevus in Otsego County, $3.2 million will be used to resurface Route 8 from the Village of Sidney Line to south of the intersection of Routes 37 and 51 in Mount Upton & $4.5 million to resurface Route 206 from Route 27 in the Hamlet of Trout Creek to the Village of Walton Line.

The Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce will hold their "Commitment to Community" Annual Dinner Saturday Night.  The guest Speakers will be Kerri Green of Commerce Chenango & Assemblyman Cliff Crouch, at Club 55 on Union Street in Sidney.  The Chamber will honor their Citizen of the Year award winner Roy Nabinger, their Business of the Year; My Home Gym, The Business of Distinction award goes to John’s Garage and the Service Organization of the Year is The Bainbridge Lion’s Club.

The Baristacrats Coffee Bar of Afton is teaming up with Gavin's Pizzeria on Division Street in Sidney on Sunday; they will be donating a percentage of the day's sales to the Afton VFW Building Project.  Baristacrats owner Alexis Van Buren explains:

This Sunday from 12:00 Noon to 6:00 PM, Gavin's Pizzeria on Division Street in Sidney will be hosting the Baristacrats Coffee Bar from Afton and the pair will be donating 10% of the day's sales to the Afton VFW Building Project.  The Baristacrats Coffee Bar will operate from the Gavin's Italian Ice take out window, The Afton VFW building project includes renovations to the building, which was built in 1898.  Contributions can also be mailed to P.O. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an accident on Elk Creek Road in the Town of Meredith Sunday afternoon, resulting in tickets for 26 year old Brandon Bathrick of Oneonta.  Deputies ticketed Bathrick for unlicensed operation of motor vehicle and aggravated unlicensed operation of motor vehicle, after he struck a tree limb in the roadway.   Bathrick’s driver’s license was suspended as a result of his failure to pay outstanding vehicle and traffic fines in the Town of Milford, Town of Oneonta and City of Oneonta Courts, he was released & will appear in the Town of Meredith Court at a later date.

Sidney Central School Alumni Association announced the cancellation of the All Class Reunion scheduled for July 17th through the 19th in Sidney.  The Association Board of Directors will meet later this month to assess whether they may be able to hold the event later this year, possibly in early October.

The Sidney Central School District is continuing with the Wednesday Bulk food deliveries today to families of District students who have signed up.  The district requests that families receiving a bulk food delivery should leave a cooler or container that can keep food cool at your door. We will put the food inside of the container at delivery. Those who are interested in receiving a bulk food delivery should call 561-7703.  The District is seeking feedback regarding communication and learning during this extended closure, with an online survey, the link is available; through the school website, the district's Facebook page and twitter account.

The Sidney Elks Lodge will hold a free Dinner this Saturday
at 1:00 PM for area veterans, service members & their families,

Sidney Center will have their annual "Holiday In The
Hamlet" celebration Saturday starting at 5:15 with Santa Claus, the event
will be held at the Sidney Center Fire station.

"Breakfast With Santa" will be hosted by the
Chenango Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Saturday from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM, it will
be held at the Norwich VFW at 61 East Main Street in Norwich.

immediately following the parade on Main Street.

The Friends of Afton Parade Committee will hold the annual
Afton Christmas Parade Saturday.  The
Parade line-up will be at Corporate Park on Route 7 at 4:00 pm, the parade
starts at 5:00pm & Santa will be in the NBT Bank after the parade. Food and
hot beverages provided by the Chamber of Commerce and VFW, located inside the
VFW. Community bonfire located in the First Baptist Church Parking lot after

Funeral arrangements for Brooke Ketchum of Unadilla are
being handled by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel at 21 Main Street in Sidney.   Ketchum died in an automobile accident in
the town of Otego Friday, Calling hours will be on Wednesday, October 9 from
2:00 to 4:00 PM with the funeral immediately following at 4:00pm. The family
invites those in attendance to the Sidney VFW for a reception following
services; donations can be made to a memorial fund for her 2 daughters.

The Sidney Police Department, Delaware County Sheriff's
Office and State Police conducted a vehicle and traffic law detail Thursday
from 5:00 to 10:00 PM. The goal of the detail was to take drunk and drugged
drivers off the road as well as enforce vehicle and traffic laws, 15 traffic
tickets were issued which included 2 arrests for aggravated unlicensed
operation.

The Afton VFW is hosting the Veterans Awareness festival
tomorrow.  The event will start at 8:00
AM with a breakfast, at 187 Main Street in Afton, more information is available

The Tri-County Chapter of New York State Women Inc. is
sponsoring an AMBA scholarship fundraiser Saturday in Sidney.  The Amba Clinic will be held from 6:00 AM to
9:30 AM at the Sidney Elks Lodge on River Street; those looking to have their
blood drawn for a variety of tests can call 800-234-8888 for an appointment.

The 10th Annual Sidney Center Tractor Parade will be held
tomorrow through the hamlet of Sidney Center.
The parade is open to anyone with tractors, doodlebugs, antique or
muscle cars, participants can line up at Firemen’s Field between 9:00 AM &
11:45 Am, the parade starts at 12:00 Noon.

Catholic Charities in Sidney is once again offering free
backpacks to local children in need for the 2019-202 school year, Spokesperson

The Delaware County Board of Supervisors recently
established a new Public Defenders office.
The Board appointed Sidney Attorney Joe Ermeti to head up the office at Wednesday’s
meeting in Delhi, Ermeti is scheduled to start on August 1st.

The Disabled American Vets
Mobile Service Office will be at the Sidney VFW at 133 West Main Street until
4:00 PM this afternoon.  Counselors are
on hand to assist Vets with any issues they may have.

State Police and local law
enforcement statewide will increase patrols to combat drunk, impaired and
reckless driving throughout Memorial Day weekend.   The special enforcement period runs from
Friday  through Monday, Memorial Day,
which is traditionally one of the busiest travel holidays of the year and
police will be out in force.

State Police released an update regarding the incident in
the town of Springfield that left 1 man dead & an Otsego county Deputy
injured.  The deceased suspect has been
identified as 23 year old Matthew All, of Sharon Springs, on Tuesday, state
troopers attempted to stop All for allegedly threatening someone with a knife, he
took off & police pursued him, until he apparently crashed head on into the
parked deputy’s vehicle near routes 20 & 80 in the town of Springfield. The
unidentified Deputy was transported to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, with
serious but non-life threatening injuries, he was coherent at the scene. All
was pronounced dead at the scene by Otsego County Coroner Michael Fox.  The investigation is on-going.

The Sidney Chamber of Commerce announced their award winners
for this year.  Lorrie Roach is this
year’s recipient of the Citizen of the Years award & ABC Center for
Performing Arts is this year’s Recipient for Business of the Years.  Both will be honored at the annual Dinner in June.

The 9th annual "Spay-ghetti Dinner and Silent
Auction" for "All Animals Matter", will be held Saturday from
4:30 to 7:00 pm at the Norwich VFW at 61 East Main Street, Norwich.  This year's event will also feature adoptable
dogs and cats from the Delaware Valley Humane Society of Sidney.   Proceeds will benefit "4 Paws Friends
Club."

The Bainbridge Town Hall Theatre & Gallery Presents "The Christmas Spectacular" Saturday, featuring the Sidney Community Band performing seasonal music, the Out of the Woodwork Players performing the skit, and an appearance by Santa Claus. The show is a benefit for the Bainbridge and Sidney Food Pantries, starting at 2:00 PM with Free Admission, but food or cash donations will be accepted for the pantries.

The Village of Afton has scheduled their Christmas parade & festivities for tomorrow. Due to the current Bridge Construction, a New Parade Line up Location has been announced, on Court Street by the Afton Central School Athletic Fields, and the parking lot behind the Afton bus garage. The parade will go along State Route 41 & go along Main Street, participants are asked to arrive no later than 4:15pm. Also, live music is scheduled from Frankie Cepero starting at 4:00 pm in front of the NBT Bank, there will be refreshments provided by the Greater Afton Chamber of Commerce in the VFW.

Induction Weekend events kick off Friday at Sidney Alumni Field when all honorees are announced at halftime of the Sidney versus Walton football game, following the game, all inductees, Sidney alumni and their guests are invited to a get-together at the Sidney VFW. Democratic Congressional candidate Gareth Rhodes will appear in Sidney today. Rhodes will appear at the Sidney Golf & Country Club this morning at 9:00 AM, he is one of 7 announced candidates running for the Democratic Party Nomination for the right to face incumbent Republican Congressman John Faso for the 19th District.

The Sidney Veterans Day ceremony will be held at the Sidney VFW, tomorrow morning at 11:00 AM. A light lunch will be served following the ceremony at 133 East Main Street in Sidney.

The Sidney Central School District and the Sidney SADD chapter are organizing a 5k walk or run on Sunday October 22nd, to help support children with cancer. 100% of proceeds will be given to "Hope and Heroes". The race will begin at 2:00PM, the Start and finish will be at Sidney Central School District, the course is will be along the river with some small hills. The Greater Maywood Society has been attempting to sell the firmer Sidney Center School, but they are planning a special community event to open up time capsules Saturday. Spokesman Mike Sellitti explains:

The event is open to the public; it will also feature music, a barbecue, as well as displays & memorabilia from the Greater Maywood Society & the Sidney Alumni Association. The event runs from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Saturday at the former Sidney Center School.

The American Red Cross urges blood donors to give in the final weeks of summer to help overcome a critical summer blood shortage. Donors of all blood types are urgently needed, A blood drive will be held today in Norwich from 1:00 to 6:00 PM at the Norwich VFW Post 2782, 61-63 East Main Street. . Appointments to give blood can be scheduled by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

Sidney village crews will continue milling today. Motorists should note that there would be traffic delays on West Main Street between east Main and Chestnut streets, as well as Dewitt drive.

The Cancer Services Program of Delaware, Otsego and Schoharie counties will offer free health screenings to women 40 and older who are uninsured, as the Bassett Cancer Institute’s mobile screening coach will be available today in Sidney. The Bassett screening coach will be set up at the Sidney Great American store parking lot from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, appointments are requested at 1-888-345-0225.

The Delaware County Local Development Corporation closed on 2 loans totaling $118,000. The loans were made to Natural Gardens LLC and the Andrew Hinkley Insurance Agency, which together anticipate creating approximately 22 new jobs in Delaware County over a 2-year period. Natural Gardens will turn 80 acres of land into a teaching farm & event center for parties, weddings and corporate events, which will be complete with a microbrewery. The Andrew Hinkley Insurance Agency, from Harpursville is moving to 53-55 Main Street in Sidney. More information is available at economic development programs in Delaware County at 746-8595.

Several area schools will hold their high school graduation exercises on Saturday & Sunday this year.  Commencement exercises will begin at 10:00 AM in Sidney, Harpursville, Greene, Norwich, Walton and Delhi, 10:30 at Gilbertsville Mount Upton, 10:45 at Oneonta, 2:00 PM for Unadilla Valley and 7:00 PM for Bainbridge Guilford.  On Sunday, Edmeston’s Graduation will start at 1:00 PM, and Cooperstown’s at 1:30.

A gun buyback will be held by the state attorney general’s office Saturday in Binghamton.  Officials will be accepting working and non-working, unloaded firearms in exchange for compensation on site, at the VFW at 65 Carroll Street in Binghamton, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

Governor Cuomo announced the approval of $5.9 million to support economic development projects throughout the state.  Local projects assisted include the MARK Project of Delaware County for $250,000.  Also the Delaware County IDA & the Amphenol Corporation of Sidney will use a grant of up to $750,000 for a portion of the cost to construct a natural gas distribution line from the Constitution Pipeline to Amphenol’s   existing facility at 40-60 Delaware Avenue, as well as the new manufacturing facility to be being constructed at 171 Delaware Avenue, which will help retain 950 jobs.

Greater Maywood Rural Community Services is holding The "Lasagna And Laughs" organic fund-raising dinner will be held Saturday night at the Sidney VFW Hall, group spokesperson Lisa Barr comments:

Governor Cuomo announced that in honor of Veterans day today, he signed legislation to ensure that the flags lowered to half-staff at the State Capitol in honor of a fallen soldier are presented to the loved ones of the deceased.    The Governor also signed a new law to  designate State Route 23 in the Town of Davenport as the ”Davenport Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Highway, to memorialize the recently deceased members of the VFW Post #487 who served in Korea and World War 2. Another new law will designate a portion of State Route 97 in the Town of Hancock as the “Hancock Veterans Memorial Highway”  as that Town lost 2 service men in the Iraq War, as well as in previous wars and conflicts.

State Police in Sidney arrested 46-year-old MARK CRAWFORD of Guilford for Criminal Sexual Act, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.  The arrests were made following an investigation conducted by the State Police and Chenango County Child Protective Services into allegations that Crawford was having sexual contact with a person less than 11 years old.  Crawford was arraigned in the Town of Guilford Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $20,000 bail.  The Investigation is continuing.  Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the New York State Police at 561-7400.

The Sidney Police Department has parking restrictions and street closings in effect for the Hometown Day Parade tomorrow.   No Parking rules are in effect on Main Street and River Street from 7:00 a.m. to the conclusion of the parade, street closures include Circle Drive from Fox to West Main at 11:00 AM, and at 12:30 closures will be Main Street at State Route 7, West Main Street from Loomis Drive to Main Street, East Main Street from Beale Boulevard to Main Street, and River Street from Colegrove to Main Street. The Salvation Army Sidney emergency Disaster team is holding a food drive to help victims of Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey.  Team Spokesperson Marie Cole explains:

The canned goods can be dropped off starting tomorrow through June 15th; more information is available at 563-2976.

A benefit for 4-½ year old Bailey Tomas of Sidney will be held at the Sidney VFW on Sunday at noon, to raise funds for a 2nd open-heart surgery and the insertion of a new pacemaker at a Rochester New York Hospital.  Proceeds will benefit the family’s traveling and medical expenses, more information is available at 563-7857.

Memorial Day Parades / Services / Activites - 2013

Sidney - Parade to form at the Moose Club parking lot on East Main St. at 8:15AM with a brief ceremony in Prospect Hill Cemetary.  A ceremony will be held on the lawn of the Sidney Memorial Public Library.  Guest speaker with will be Sidney Mayor Andy Matviak.

Sidney Center - Parade will form at 10:30AM at the corner of routes 23 & 35.  Proceed to the former site of the Methodist Church for the service and then to the cemetary.

Masonville - Parade will begin at about 12:00pm.  Sidney High School Band to arrive about 11:45am.  Following the parade, there will be a chicken BBQ.

Guilford - Parade line up at 7:30am at the end of School St. moving out at 8:00am.  Ceremony to be held at the park on route 35.

Afton - Parade starting at 10am at the corner of Main st. and Pleasant St.  The Afton VFW Post 3529 will be holding a pancake breakfast from 7a-11a at the VFW on Main. St.

Bainbridge - There will be no parking on Main St. during the parade!  Parade will form at 10am at the Greenlawn Cemetary and start off at 10:30am.  Military services will be held at 10:15 AM.

Unadilla - Services and ceremony to start at 10:30am at the Community House, following by a parade and proceeding to Evergreen Cemetary.

Otego - Parade to form at the American Legion Field at 8am

Oxford - The wreath laying ceremony and rifle salute will be held at St. Joseph's Cemetary.  Following at 9am, the parade will line up at the Oxford American Legion Post #376.  Following the parade and ceremony, there will be a chicken BBQ at 11am.

Gilbertsville - Parade will form in front of the former school on Grove St. at 9am

Franklin - Parade begins at 11am at the American Legion and proceeds to the cemetary.

Oneonta - Parade at 10am followed by the dedication ceremony at Neahwa Park Memorial Walkway at 11am.

Norwich - Parade followed by memorial ceremony at 10:15am in the park.

Delhi - Parade to begin at Courthouse Square and ends at the American Legion at 11am.

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County will hold an energy Symposium tomorrow at Suny Delhi.  The event will be held in Catskill Hall from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, topics include: Efficiency and Savings, heating with wood pellets, new technologies for home and business with solar thermal, solar-voltaic and small wind turbines, the Grass Pellet Demonstration Project, & funding opportunities.   There will be tours of the energy projects on the Delhi Campus and of the new green/sustainable construction at Sidney Federal Credit Union in Delhi. The Sidney Central School Observatory will be open Tonight, from 8:30-10:00PM.    Featured attractions will be Jupiter and the Moon.  Several telescopes will be available for viewing, including the main scope inside the dome.  This event is open to the public, and admission is free.  This session will be run by Sidney High Astronomy students.  The Observatory is located behind the high school building.  Please drive past the main entrance of the new gymnasium.

A Tuscan Italian feast fundraiser will be held tomorrow from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, at the Sidney VFW, to benefit the Delaware valley humane society.  The cost will be $10.00 per person; children under 5 will eat free.  A Chinese auction is also scheduled.

Another blood drive will be held in Sidney tomorrow.  The blood drive will be held at Saint Luke’s church on west Main Street from 1:30 to 6:30 PM.  More information is available at 1-800-red cross or at redcrossblood.org.
