The State DEC is investigating the possibility of White Tail Deer in New York State possibly suffering from Chronic Wasting disease, after 1 deer in Herkimer County tested positive for the fatal disease last month. The DEC Statement said that the disease is always fatal, and can spread through certain Deer & Moose populations, they will continue to monitor as hunting season approaches.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 3 people after a 3-month investigation into fraud, forgery and identity theft. In August, Deputies received a complaint in regard to stolen funds from multiple accounts, multiple unknown charges and new accounts being opened without consent. Deputies, Sidney Police & State Police and the Delaware County District Attorney's Office arrested 44 year old Lori Brooks of Sidney, 27 year old Joshua Hunt of Unadilla & 37 year old Matthew Walsh of Sidney on a variety of charges including Grand Larceny, Conspiracy, Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument & criminal possession of stolen property, Brooks was issued an appearance ticket and turned over to State Police for an outstanding warrant & was then turned over to the Otsego County Correctional Facility for arraignment. Hunt was being held at the Otsego County Jail on an unrelated charge, he was processed & was brought back to the Otsego County Jail, Walsh was turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for Arraignment, he will appear at the Village of Sidney Court at a later date, the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are possible.

The Sidney Elks Lodge will be hosting a Veterans Resource Fair Wednesday from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM at the lodge on River Street. There will be a free lunch, free haircuts & a variety of services available to area Veterans such as Blood Pressure screenings, and representatives from Medicare, The VA of Albany, The Tri-County Veterans Services as well as financial experts. The Sidney Chamber of Commerce will have their next meeting this morning, it will be held at 8:00 AM at Club 55, all members & Directors are urged to attend.

The tournament will be held at Canasawacta country club in Norwich beginning at 9:00 AM.

State Police at Sidney arrested 22-year-old Christopher Brissette of Unadilla for felony of criminal possession of stolen property. The arrest occurred after a report of the theft of power tools in July from a residential garage in the Town of Unadilla. Brissette is accused of possessing a wood splitter valued at about $2,000 in the Town of Columbus. He was issued a ticket returnable to the Town of Columbus court on August 16th.

A fundraiser will be held this Sunday in Sidney for the family of 31-year-old Shayne Charles, who was fatally injured in an explosion & house fire in Masonville July 13th. The fundraiser will be at the Moose Lodge in Sidney from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM to help pay for medical and funeral expenses and establish a trust fund for Charles daughter. Charles was severely burned when he tried to ignite a propane hot water heater at his mother’s house on State route 206, he was transported to the burn unit at Upstate Medical University Hospital in Syracuse, he died there 10 days later. . SIdney Village officials announced that East Main Street from the Moose Lodge to Orchard Street, will be closed through 2:00 trhis afternoon. Officials said that NYSEG is installing a new utiily pole.

The Sidney Moose Club will be holding a benefit Saturday in honor of the late Bill Ray.  The event will be held at the Moose Lodge tomorrow from 1:00 to 5:00 PM.  Proceeds will go for Bill’s medical expenses and for the Bill Ray Little League Baseball Field in Sidney. more information is available at 435-1007.

The documentary “Triple Divide”  will be viewed at the Sidney Memorial Public Library Saturday afternoon.  The documentary will start at 12:30, filmmaker Melissa Troutman will be on hand to discuss her film.

Memorial Day Parades / Services / Activites - 2013

Sidney - Parade to form at the Moose Club parking lot on East Main St. at 8:15AM with a brief ceremony in Prospect Hill Cemetary.  A ceremony will be held on the lawn of the Sidney Memorial Public Library.  Guest speaker with will be Sidney Mayor Andy Matviak.

Sidney Center - Parade will form at 10:30AM at the corner of routes 23 & 35.  Proceed to the former site of the Methodist Church for the service and then to the cemetary.

Masonville - Parade will begin at about 12:00pm.  Sidney High School Band to arrive about 11:45am.  Following the parade, there will be a chicken BBQ.

Guilford - Parade line up at 7:30am at the end of School St. moving out at 8:00am.  Ceremony to be held at the park on route 35.

Afton - Parade starting at 10am at the corner of Main st. and Pleasant St.  The Afton VFW Post 3529 will be holding a pancake breakfast from 7a-11a at the VFW on Main. St.

Bainbridge - There will be no parking on Main St. during the parade!  Parade will form at 10am at the Greenlawn Cemetary and start off at 10:30am.  Military services will be held at 10:15 AM.

Unadilla - Services and ceremony to start at 10:30am at the Community House, following by a parade and proceeding to Evergreen Cemetary.

Otego - Parade to form at the American Legion Field at 8am

Oxford - The wreath laying ceremony and rifle salute will be held at St. Joseph's Cemetary.  Following at 9am, the parade will line up at the Oxford American Legion Post #376.  Following the parade and ceremony, there will be a chicken BBQ at 11am.

Gilbertsville - Parade will form in front of the former school on Grove St. at 9am

Franklin - Parade begins at 11am at the American Legion and proceeds to the cemetary.

Oneonta - Parade at 10am followed by the dedication ceremony at Neahwa Park Memorial Walkway at 11am.

Norwich - Parade followed by memorial ceremony at 10:15am in the park.

Delhi - Parade to begin at Courthouse Square and ends at the American Legion at 11am.
