The Nate Lull Scholarship Fundraiser Golf Tournament is held This Sunday at Ouleout Creek Golf Course in Franklin, Lull told WCDO about the latest tournament:

This year's tournament will be raising money for the 2027 edition of the scholarship, where the goal is to surpass last year's fundraising efforts, about 60 teams will be participating.

The Southern Tier Music Festival will be held tomorrow afternoon into the evening hours at the Sidney Municipal Airport, co-organizer Teri Schunk comments:

The Luszi’s Legacy Cornhole Tournament last weekend successful, the tournament raised $1,600 that will go directly to Pet Street Station Animal Hospital fund, to assist families deal with the bills for emergency or quality of life care for their senior pets.

This community dialogue will take place at the James S. Flanagan Research Center, 43 Rexford Street in Norwich, to begin planning activities for the day-long festival for July 5.

Chobani had their new site plan changes approved by the Rome Planning Board on Tuesday night, as they continue with their expansion plans in New York State. Chobani was leasing over 168 acres on a golf course from Oneida County, but the acreage has been reduced to 93 acres in the new plan, Chobani plans to have the new facility running in 2027, with construction expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Chenango County Health Department reported that a raccoon found along State Highway 80 between Sherburne and Columbus was tested by the Wadsworth Laboratories, and was found to have rabies. Residents and visitors in the area are advised to not pick up or handle any stray or wild animal, If your pet or livestock is behaving strangely contact your veterinarian immediately. 40 year old Mark Archer of Sidney pleaded guilty to 3 counts of Sexual Abuse in Delaware County Court Thursday. Archer was indicted by a Grand Jury on 12 counts related to sexual abuse against 3 victims were less than 13 years old between 2013 and 2019 in the Village of Sidney, Archer will be sentenced to 13.5 years in state prison and 30 years of post-release supervision, he will be required to register as a sex offender after prison & he is prohibited from contacting his victims.

LifeNet of New York 7-8 is hosting a special event on September 27, to celebrate 15 years of service, by honoring the dedication of local first responders, partners, and community supporters who have helped make LifeNet’s mission of providing critical lifesaving care possible. Former LifeNet patients, including 16-year-old Anielle McEwan-Lomnicki, who was a trauma patient who was struck by a drunk driver while walking home from school two years ago. 35 year old Irina Irimescu of Sidney appeared in Delaware County Court Wednesday to be re-sentenced after it was determined she violated her probation. On August 14, 2023, she pleaded guilty to Grand Larceny, she admitted guilt for her part in a larceny with Darin Wignall. She was sentenced to a term of 5 years of felony probation supervision. The County Department of Probation filed a revocation petition alleging Irimescu violated the terms by failing a required drug screening. Judge Rosa re-sentenced Irimescu to 364 days of incarceration.

Oneonta Fire Department responded at about 1:30 this morning to a structure fire at 5 Grand Street. An Occupant in 1 of the apartments reported a kitchen fire, crews found light smoke showing from the exterior of the building, they encountered heavy smoke and poor visibility on the 2nd floor, they located the involved apartment and quickly extinguished the fire. The Department reported that all 6 residents from the 3 affected apartments have been displaced and will remain so until repairs can be completed. 1 occupant was taken to A.O. Fox Hospital for evaluation, 1 resident's cat perished in the fire. Assistance was provided by the Sidney Fire Department FAST Team, West Oneonta Fire Department was on stand-by, the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

The Department of Justice announced the results of Operation Restore Justice, which resulted in the rescue of 115 children and the arrests of 205 offenders in the nationwide crackdown. The coordinated effort was executed over the course of five days by all 55 FBI field offices. Locally, Jerry Butler of Walton was charged, he is accused of using a social messaging application to request and receive sexually explicit content from a minor, he is believed to be involved in the "764" network, whose members seek to corrupt and exploit vulnerable populations, including minors, He faces at least 15 years in prison. The Department urges the public to report suspected exploitation of a child through their tip-line at 1-800-CALL-FBI, at tips.fbi.gov, or by calling your local FBI field office.

Delaware County Public Health is scheduling Rabies vaccination clinics, following the recent report of the first rabid animal of the year in Masonville last week. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli's auditors found that New York state bought hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of medical equipment at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, that now sits unused in storage facilities. To compete for the purchase of the medical equipment at the start of the pandemic, Then Governor Cuomo took emergency steps to accelerate the procurement process, inconsistent with Office of General Services guidance. DiNapoli's auditors determined the state paid $452.8 million to purchase 247,343 Medical items & machines, only 324 of those items were distributed, the audit recommends that the state distribute the items to hospitals & medical providers who may be able to use them, and stop paying for excessive storage fees for those items.

Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced that the Delaware County Grand Jury returned a 5-count indictment against Jeramiah Burke of Margaretville. Each count of the five count Indictment accuses Burke of Menacing a Police Officer, on March 9th, in the Town of Middletown, he is accused of intentionally place or attempt to place several different uniformed police officers, including State Troopers and Deputies, in reasonable fear of physical injury by displaying a knife while such police officers were in the course of performing their official duties.

On September 18th, 2024 the Sidney Police Department began an investigation into a social media post that made a threat to several specific students of the Sidney School District. The same threat was also directed to several specific students of the Walton School District. Sidney Police Department has charged a 14 year old female with one count of Making a terroristic threat and four counts of Aggravated harassment, Due to the subject's age she was issued a juvenile appearance ticket to appear at the Delaware County Probation Department and released.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 38 year old Stanley Kingston of Albany, following a traffic stop on July 26, in the Town of Oneonta. Kingston was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, DWI, with a previous conviction within 10 years, 2 counts of Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, driving a vehicle without Ignition Interlock Device, among other charges, Kingston had a revoked license, he was released with appearance tickets for Oneonta Town court at a later date.

The Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 43 year old James Nash of Sidney on an arrest warrant from the Delaware County Family Court. On July 18th, the Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Village of Sidney Police Department that Nash was currently in their custody for an unrelated warrant issued by the Village of Sidney Court. In January of 2023 the Delaware County Family Court issued an arrest warrant for Nash for failure to pay child support, Nash was brought to Delaware County Central Arraignment where he was held pending arraignment by the Delaware County Family Court.

Motor vehicle fatalities in New York state rose 25.8% from 2019-2022, the highest level in a decade, as the number of vehicle miles travelled, licensed drivers, and traffic accidents have declined, according to a report by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. There were 1,175 traffic fatalities in New York in 2022, which was the highest number since 2013. This increase coincides with a 7% decrease in vehicle miles travelled and a 12.5% decline in traffic accidents in New York in this period. Regionally, the North County had the highest per capita fatality rate in 2022 at 12.9 per 100,000 people.

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer visited Awestruck Ciders in Sidney yesterday, vowing to overturn the "Bubble Tax", which has kept the local cideries from adding other flavored ciders that would have carbonation levels or "Bubbles" like champagne, that would be costly in taxes:

Schumer said that the dropping of the Bubble tax would mean millions of dollars to the New York economy, from the fast growing Cider industry, he will introduce the legislation when he returns to Washington.

Delaware County officials announced that with the heat & humidity, several public libraries will serve as cooling centers, including in Andes, Bovina, Delhi, Margaretville, Roxbury, Sidney & Walton, In observance of Juneteenth on Wednesday, some libraries may be closed. Residents are also asked to check up on elderly neighbors, avoid extreme exercising in the heat, drink plenty of water.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 37-year-old Nikita Kingsbury of Oneonta after she agreed to meet a confidential informant in Davenport for the purposes of selling controlled substances. Kingsbury arrived with her boyfriend, 43-year-old Lloyd Hunt, they were both taken into custody, they were in possession of Fentanyl and Suboxone at the time of their arrest. Hunt was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and was released on an appearance ticket, Kingsbury was arrested on an unrelated Bench Warrant issued by Delaware County Court for a failure to appear in Court, she was remanded to the Delaware County Jail without bail. Last Week, Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested Kingsbury at the Delaware County Jail for Attempted Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, she was arraigned and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail.

The Village of Sidney is facing budgetary issues, following the extended loss of 138 taxable properties since 2006 & 2011, Sidney Village Mayor Ray Baker told WCDO News that the budget increase is 11%, he told WCDO News what steps they are taking:

Mayor Baker Said that the median household is assessed at $65,000, which equates to $140 more per year in taxes for Village property owners on average, he said that they are also looking at selling the properties across from the Golf Course as a way to get more houses on to the tax roles.

Catholic Charities of Sidney is still seeking children from the Sidney central School District, to sign up for free backpacks with school supplies, for the coming school year, spokesperson Penny McKnight explains:

Sentencing was delayed in Chenango County Court for William Sabines of Oxford, Sabines pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide, concealment of a human corpse and attempted criminal possession of stolen property, in connection with the burning & dismemberment death of Jesse Donlin of Unadilla & Sidney in 2019, & hiding Donlin's vehicle in Chenango County. Sabines was originally scheduled to be sentenced last Friday.
