37 year old Michael Brutvan of Binghamton, pleaded guilty to Murder in the Second Degree in Broome County Court and will serve a sentence of 17 Years to Life in a New York State Correctional Facility. On May 13, 2025, the Binghamton Police Department was dispatched to the Salvation Army located at 131 Washington Street for a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers located a male inside the establishment suffering from stab wounds to the shoulder and neck. The victim was later pronounced deceased. Sentencing is scheduled for June 22, 2026, in Broome County Court.

Binghamton Police responded to the Salvation Army at 131 Washington Street yesterday afternoon, Officers found a 57-year-old male suffering from stab wounds, the man was taken to an area hospital and was pronounced dead. 37-year-old Michael Brutvan allegedly entered the building and stabbed the victim several times & fled the scene, but was located & arrested. Brutvan has been charged with 2nd-degree murder, the investigation is continuing.

Sidney Town Supervisor Gene Pigford passed away Sunday at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. Pigford was an officer for the Salvation Army for 40 years & served as Sidney Town Supervisor for the last 7 1/2 years. Calling hours will be held from 5:00 to 8:00pm on Wednesday at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main Street in Sidney, Graveside services will take place at 1:00pm on Thursday, June 10, 2021 in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, in Unadilla. Pigford was 76.

Police accuse Thomas of twisting the unidentified woman's neck “in a violent manner,” causing extensive damage, she was transported to Fox Hospital & was transferred to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown where she required surgery.

Troopers patrolling I-81 in the Whitney Point area spotted a tractor trailer parked in the left lane, Wednesday morning, they observed the truck driver carrying one badly injured dog and another following behind him. A State Police K9 handler bandaged the injured dog to stop bleeding, the Broome County Humane Society was contacted and took possession of the dogs. The truck driver observed a Dodge Durango SUV slow down, roll down their rear window and throw the dogs out of the window. Anyone with information is asked to call State Police at 749-1614.

This year, with just 10 ringing days left in this year’s campaign, the kettles are trending short of the statewide goal. Volunteer bell ringers are needed throughout The Salvation Army's 48-county region. An hour of bellringing yields enough money in the kettle to provide thirteen meals. Severe symptoms, may include wheezing and difficulty breathing. Recent cases in NYS have been confirmed among individuals who reside in Western and Central New York, the Capital Region and Long Island, and specimens have been received from other regions for specialized testing at Wadsworth. 18 Year Old Gunnar Hassard of Oneonta has been arrested and charged with a hate crime after allegedly posting pro-Nazi posters around the SUNY Purchase campus, where he was a freshman. Hassard is accused of hanging 16 posters containing Nazi imagery, swastikas and images of Adolph Hitler; he was arraigned in Harrison Town Court yesterday and charged with Aggravated Harassment in the First Degree, a class E felony.
The Department of Environmental Protection announced plans to build a $34 million hydroelectric facility at Cannonsville Reservoir, which should produce enough electricity to power more than 3,500 homes each year. DEP officials announced that they will host 2 public meetings today, 1 at 9:00 AM at the Deposit State Theater, at 148 Front Street in Deposit & another at 12:30 PM at the Upper Delaware Council office, 211 Bridge Street in Narrowsburg. Governor Cuomo announced the Salvation Army in the City of Binghamton has broken ground on its new North Side Job Training and Support Center. The United Way of Delaware and Otsego Counties, the Oneonta Lion’s Club and Hannaford of Oneonta, will be holding a food drive at the 2015 Oneonta Halloween Parade on Saturday, October 31st at 7:00 PM. All food and monetary donations will be given directly to Opportunities for Otsego and the Salvation Army Food Pantry to help defray the loss that both agencies will incur this year by the Holiday Train not making its annual visit to Oneonta. United Way of Delaware & Otsego Counties has been awarded Federal Funds through FEMA Under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program “Set Aside” Funds. Otsego County has been chosen to receive $24,410 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county and related administrative fees with Opportunities for Otsego, Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, The Lord’s Table, St. Mary’s food pantry and First Presbyterian Church of Worcester, participating, they provided 104,435 meals, 164 nights of lodging and assist 23 households with emergency utilities.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman today announced that his office has posted information online detailing charitable donations raised for Hurricane Sandy relief. The 88 charities that have responded to the survey reported raising approximately $400 million for Hurricane Sandy relief. The five charities reporting the most contributions and pledges are the American red cross at 188 million, the robin hood foundation at 67 million, The Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City at 45 million dollars, the empire state relief fund at 15.4 million and the salvation army at 14.3 million.
