The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 34 year old Dustin Henness of Morris following an investigation in to a sex offender who failed to update the New York State Sex Offender Registry of a change in status. Investigators were alerted that a level 3 sex offender was utilizing a Facebook account that was not registered, and was under an alias. Henness was taken into custody without incident, was processed and was held for arraignment at the Otsego County Correctional Facility.

The graduation ceremony will honor the perseverance, professionalism, and dedication of the new Troopers as they join the ranks at Troops across the state.

Clement struck a person with his car, at about 40 miles an hour, in July 2024 in the Town of Butternuts, causing serious damage to the victim's leg, Clement left the scene, State Police located him & took him into custody. The incident caused serious damage to the victim’s leg.

The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force said officers executed the search warrant at 15 Corbett Avenue where Officers seized methamphetamines, crack cocaine, fentanyl and methadone, as well as items used for weighing and packaging narcotics. 41 year old Jeremy Bezek was charged with multiple counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance & criminally using drug paraphernalia, 25 year old Carter Dennison was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, both face court action shortly.

Prince Johnson was the operator of the vehicle was found to have an active Violent Felony Warrant out of Broome County and he was arrested. Durgala was charged with false impersonation, Obstructing Governmental Administration, he was issued appearance tickets and was directed to appear in the Town of Walton Court at a later date to answer to the charges.

An anonymous tip from the community led to multiple drug smuggling charges at the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility this week. Investigators received information from anonymous community member that an 37 year old Luis Bigio of Endicott allegedly smuggling contraband into the Correctional Facility. Investigators searched Bigio’s cell & recovered 136 suboxone strips, Bigio was charged with 2 Counts of Promoting Prison Contraband, he was serving a Broome County Court sentence related to disobeying a court mandate. Bigio was processed at the Broome County Correctional Facility and will answer for his charges at the Town of Dickinson Court on a future date.

Attorney General Letitia James today secured the largest multi-state agreement with JUUL Labs and its former directors and executives for their alleged role in contributing to the nationwide youth vaping epidemic. As part of a multi state agreement, JUUL will pay $462 million to 6 states and the District of Columbia, New York will receive $112.7 million, which will support underage vaping abatement programs across the state.

A State DEC patrol caught 30 teenagers holding a party with alcohol on Friday, April 22, at the Charles Baker State Forest in Sherburne. The group included teens ranging in age from 15 to 19 years old, including an unidentified 18-year-old from Norwich, who allegedly had 3 cases of beer, who was charged with underage possession of alcohol in a State Forest.

The State Department of Transportation is advising motorists that starting Today, eastbound traffic on I-88 will be crossed over to the westbound lanes from just west of Exit 19 in Worcester to Exit 21 in Richmondville. The crossover will result in one lane of travel in each direction, the on-ramp at Exit 20 eastbound will close, followed by the westbound off ramp at Exit 19. The crossover and ramp closures are expected to be in place for approximately 5 months. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones.

NYSEG will be raising electric & natural gas rates starting this Sunday, after a rate increase request was approved by the Public Service Commission, who authorized the 3-year rate hike plan in November 2020. The Cannabis Control Board today advanced regulations for public comment that will allow for the home cultivation of medical cannabis. The regulations follow the requirements of Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act, allowing for up to three mature plants and three immature plants per person and a cap of six mature and six immature plants within any private residence. State Police at Norwich arrested 53 year old Jose Gonzalez of Norwich, for 2nd degree Assault and Criminal Possession of a Weapon, in connection with an alleged assault on 2 people at Fred's Inn of Norwich On April 14th. 2 people suffered injuries & were taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital, they were treated and released.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies investigated a head-on collision in the Town of Franklin on Wednesday afternoon. Deputies reported that at about 5:30 PM, they responded with EMT's to the accident on County Highway 21 near Leland Hull Road. Deputies determined that a vehicle driven by 50 year-old Jeffrey Lewis of Walton crossed over the center line and collided with a vehicle driven by 62 year-old Wayne Knorr of Laurens, causing the Knorr vehicle to overturn several times. Lewis’ driving privileges were revoked as a result of previous alcohol related offense, he was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operation of a motor vehicle without an ignition interlock device, failure to keep right and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, he was released to appear in Town of Franklin court at a later date. Alcohol was not a contributing factor in this accident.

The Oneonta City School District have switched middle and high school students to remote learning yesterday & again today after being notified of a teacher testing positive. NO student or any faculty/staff member is deemed a “close contact” to the affected teacher, according to a district letter; all elementary buildings will open as normal. Middle & High School students are scheduled to return on the previous hybrid schedule Monday.
Otsego County Department of Health reported 10 new cases of COVID 19 Thursday; they are investigating a cluster of cases that originated at a wedding that has now spread into the community. Current COVID numbers, they report 952 total confirmed cases, 27 active cases with 2 hospitalizations, they've had 7 deaths, 747 probable and confirmed cases linked to SUNY Oneonta & Hartwick College reported 2 more cases of COVID-19 have been detected, they have 3 active cases on campus; the total number of cases is 24.
Delaware County Public Health reported 4 new cases of COVID 19 Thursday, with 12 active cases, 3 hospitalizations, & 73 in quarantine. Delaware County is up to 149 cases since March with 8 deaths and 129 recoveries.

28-year-old Devan Ellsworth of Norwich has been indicted for manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, for allegedly causing the death of his 20-month-old daughter in August in Norwich. Ellsworth was originally charged with assault following the August 27th incident, where first responders were called to Ellsworth’s home on Henry Street following the report of an unresponsive child, who died the following day in a Syracuse hospital. Ellsworth remains held in the Chenango county jail pending court action.

The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for August 2018. The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 4.3% to 4.2% in August 2018. Locally, Chenango County had 3.8% unemployment, Delaware county registered 4.2% & Otsego County 3.9% in August.

The State Department of Transportation will hold a public open house meeting on Wednesday, September 26 at Afton Central School, from 5:30-7:00 pm to discuss 2 bridge replacements on State Route 41 in the towns of Afton and Coventry. The project will replace the bridge carrying Route 41 over Cornell Creek in the town of Afton as well as the bridge carrying Route 41 over Wilkins Brook in the town of Coventry. Both bridges, which were built in the 1930s, are inspected regularly and safe for continued travel. The bridges will likely be replaced during separate construction seasons in 2020 and 2021. 28 year old Devan Ellsworth of Norwich appeared in court earlier today, so far he has been charged with 2nd degree Assault & endangering the welfare of a child, in connection with the death of his 1 year old daughter last weekend in Norwich. First responders & Norwich police were called to the Ellsworth apartment on Henry Street in Norwich Sunday for a report of a 1-year-old child with a head injury, the child died Monday after being transferred to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. Ellsworth is expected to have his case heard by a Grand Jury & charges are expected to be added, he is being held in the Chenango County Jail without bail.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli released an audit today that examined 7 school districts and their compliance with school bus safety requirements, it found that school districts are not confirming all school bus drivers are completing required training and drug testing, and that school bus safety drills and inspections are done. DiNapoli recommended school officials take immediate steps to address the deficiencies, have superintendents annually approve all drivers that transport district students, have all drivers meet the minimum training requirements, & have random drug and alcohol testing, & have all buses have pre-trip inspections conducted. State Police arrested 41 year old John Nixon of Sherburne for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, after a trooper responded to the report of a vehicle veered across the center line, into a drainage ditch & then back to the other side of the highway, striking several mailboxes, on State Route 8 in the town of Guilford. Nixon was arrested; he was released to a sober third party and is scheduled to appear in the town of Guilford Court on September 11th.

Alternate Jurors were selected & the trial of Jeremy Coates is underway in Chenango County Court. Coates is charged with 2nd degree murder for the September 2016 =killing of 58 year old Daniel Green in Green’s Oxford home. The trial is expected to take 2 weeks to complete.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is April 28.
The City of Oneonta Department of Public Service announced this year’s schedule for curbside residential brush and yard waste pick-up. City residents wards 1 through 4 will be picked up on Monday April 16th, those living in wards 5 to 8 will be picked up the following Monday, April 23rd. Residents should have brush and yard waste out no sooner than the weekend before the scheduled pick-up to prevent possible code violation.

Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell announced that 27-year-old Aizaz Siddiqui of Binghamton pleaded guilty in City of Binghamton Court Friday to leaving the scene of an accident, in connection with the December 3rd 2016 death of Binghamton University student Stefani Lineva. Siddiqui hit Lineva on State Route 434 in Binghamton, she was pronounced dead at Wilson Hospital. Siddiqui will be sentenced on August 4th.
Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a Sidney Central School Special Education teacher following an investigation by Deputies, State Police, and Sidney Central School administrators. Deputies arrested 48-year-old James Lewis, Jr. of Otego, for 2 counts of Forcible Touching and 3 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Lewis is accused of inappropriately touching 2 male special education students in the school on different occasions during the last week of April. Lewis surrendered to Deputies on Wednesday afternoon; he was arraigned in the Village of Sidney Court where he was released on recognizance pending further court action.
Governor Cuomo today announced $87 million in grants are available to municipalities and not-for-profit corporations for water quality improvement projects. The program provides grants for projects that improve water quality, protect drinking water sources, reduce polluted runoff, and restore habitats in New York’s waterbodies. The grants are administered by the State DEC and made available through Governor Cuomo's Regional Economic Development Council initiative.
The Chenango County Sheriffs department participated in the April 28th National Drug Take Back event. The Sheriff’s Office recovered approximately 150 pounds of prescription medication at drop off locations in New Berlin, Guilford, as well as the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office. Residents may continue to turn in their prescription medication at the Sheriff’s Office Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm.
New York union dues are now fully tax deductible under a state budget provision backed by Governor Cuomo, who signed the bill into law on Friday. A limitation built into the law prevented many union workers from applying the deduction, but the state’s new budget agreement removed those limitations at the state level. The bill will affect about 500,000 union workers in public and private sectors and will cost the state about $35 million.

State Police responded to a report of shots fired on Algerine Street in Afton, at about 11:30 this morning. Troopers found one person with a Gunshot wound that required medical treatment, who was in police custody. The investigation is continuing. The Afton School district Superintendent Betty Briggs told WCDO News that the building was placed in "Lockout" following the reported shooting, but there was only staff and no students in the school today, due to a scheduled "Conference day".

A new Siena research poll says Governor Andrew Cuomo's 2017 agenda is largely supported by New Yorkers. Cuomo maintains a 56 percent to 37 percent favorability rating, unchanged since late last year. His job performance rating stands at 45 percent approve, 53 percent disapprove -- also little changed from last month. Meanwhile, 47 percent of voters are ready to back the governor for a third term, a job Cuomo is seeking again next year.
The Binghamton Senators have called a Press Conference for Tuesday afternoon at the Holiday Inn of Binghamton, they are expected to address the replacement team for the Senators, after Ottawa team officials announced that they are moving the their top Farm team out of Binghamton after this current season. Published reports out of Albany suggested that New Jersey Devils would be moving their farm team from Albany to Binghamton; an official comment is expected at tomorrow’s press conference.

The state's minimum wage is going up at year's end. Downstate counties & New York City will see higher minimum wages implemented due to a higher cost of living, in most of the upstate counties, the wage will be increased to $9.70 an hour. The increases go into effect on the last day of the year.
It now seems unlikely for the state lawmakers to be called back to Albany for a special session this week. Lawmakers were pushing for a pay increase for themselves for the fist time in 17 years; Governor Cuomo was pushing for stronger ethics reforms. Lawmakers come back to Albany to begin the 2017 session in January.
State officials are reminding New Yorkers that if they have an old TV, laptop, cell phone, tablet or other electronic device to dispose of, they cannot put it with their regular trash. The State Electronic Equipment recycling & re-use act makes it illegal to have those items thrown out, they must be disposed of properly due to toxins that could contaminate the soil, air or water. The law also requires manufacturers of electronic devices to take back the products they have sold. More information is available on the state DEC website.
The Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested several people on sealed indictment arrest warrant on a variety of drug charges Thursday. Charged were 20 year old Marissa Peck of Andes, 22 year old Zachery Mattice of Delhi, 35 year old Dennis Fickeria of Margaretville & 45 year old Abelardo Vincente of Hancock. All 4 were held in the Delaware County Jail on cash bail. Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies also arrested 21-year-old Austin Rose of Andes on a sealed indictment arrest warrant; he’ll be arraigned on the undisclosed charges in January, when the charges will be unsealed. Rose was arrested at the Otsego County Correctional Facility where he is being held on a charge of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.
The Otsego County Sheriffs department arrested 32 year old Robert Colvin of Unadilla, for allegedly breaking into a woman’s house, shoving the victim & stealing prescription medication, Colvin was charged robbery and grand larceny; Colvin was arraigned in the Town of Unadilla Court and was sent to the county jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond.

The Maine-Endwell Little League World Series team will be honored at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown this weekend. In September 2016, the state's private sector job count fell by 4,400. Since the beginning of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's administration, New York State's economy has added 839,500 private sector jobs and experienced employment growth in 58 of the past 69 months.
