The results are in for the Otsego County Solid Waste Plastic Film Recycling challenge, where students were encouraged to recycle bread-bags and similar plastics, Otsego County Waste Management & Recycling Coordinator Kyle King told WCDO News who the winners were:

Otsego County School Districts Plastic Film Recycling challenge ends today, after Otsego County Students collected & turned in plastics like grocery bags, bread bags & bubble wrap to get them out of the waste stream, Kyle King of the Otsego County Solid waste Department explains:

King said that in recent years, the challenge has successfully recycled tons of the plastic film items, with the winning district getting the ice cream event each year of the contest.

The Otsego County Conservation Association & Otsego County Planning & Solid Waste announced the winning schools of the 2024-2025 Plastic Film Recycling Challenge. The Unatego Elementary School won the elementary division with 2,122 pounds of plastic film recycled & Springbrook won in the high school division with 801 pounds of plastic film recycled. 10 participating schools diverted a total of 4,655.4 pounds of plastic film, each winning division will receive an ice cream social event.

The Otsego County Solid Waste Department Plastic Film Recycling Challenge ends today. Participating schools collected film plastics such as Grocery Bags, Bread bags, Bubble wrap, The winner of the each division will receive an ice cream social event soon, last year over 6 tons of the plastics were diverted out of the waste stream in otsego county.

The Otsego County Solid Waste Department is continuing with the annual Plastic Film Recycling Challenge where Otsego County Schools recycle things like bread bags, Grocery bags Bubble wraps & bring it to Trex Affiliated business where the totals are counted. King said that last year this challenge helped divert roughly 6 tons of plastic film from the landfills and helped promote recycling practices in our school aged community. The winning schools in each division will receive an ice cream social event in the spring.

State Senator Peter Oberacker was elected to another term in the legislature this week, he commented about working in the State Senate for the 51st District:

Oberacker defeated Democratic challenger Michele Frazier of Delhi by a substantial margin Tuesday.

The Otsego County Solid Waste Department has invited local school district to once again participate in the annual Plastic Film Recycling Challenge, starting November 15th to next April. Kyle King of the Solid Waste Department explains:

Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced that the District Attorney’s Office will no longer participate in the Delaware County Drug Court Program. Smith stated that the motivation behind the creation of Drug Court was noble, to help low level, non-violent, drug users obtain the treatment they needed, but the State’s Bail Reform and Discovery Reform, has led to the portion of the population the program was meant to help, are no longer entering the criminal justice system. WCDO News will interview Smith for more on this story next week.

The Otsego County Solid Waste Department, Otsego County Conservation Association, and Casella announced that the Film Plastic Recycling Challenge is back, where area schools recycle plastic bags and other plastic film items which cannot be recycled through regular recycling programs. The challenge focuses on collecting clean, dry, plastic film to help keep it out of the landfill, it begins today until April 24th, Winners will be announced on Earth Day in April.

The Otsego County Solid Waste Department and the Otsego County Conservation Association are teaming up once again to promote the Otsego County Schools Plastic Film Recycling Challenge. The challenge promotes recycling of film plastics and is open to all public and private k-12 school buildings located in Otsego County. The challenge kicks off on America Recycles Day, November 15, and runs through April 14, 2023.

6 Otsego County School in 4 Districts participated in the Otsego County Film Plastic Recycling Challenge, with Gilbertsville-Mount Upton winning by collecting about half of all film plastic collected. Jeff O'Handley of the Otsego County Conservation Association explains:

O'Handley said that the event is co-sponsored by the Association and the County Solid Waste Department. During the challenge, schools collect as much film plastic as they can, it's collected, weighed, and then dropped off for recycling, where it can be turned into new material such as composite lumber. The total amount collected in this contest was 3,085 pounds. More information is available at occainfo.org.

Conservation Association announced the 2020 plastic film recycling
challenge.   Schools in Otsego County are
competing to see who can collect the most plastic film for recycling through
April 15th; the winners will be announced at OCCA’s Earth Festival on April
