State Police responded Friday afternoon to a one-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 81 in the town of Lisle. An investigation determined that an SUV operated by 59 year old Paul Veeder of Virginia was north on Interstate 81, he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to leave roadway and overturn. A 19-year-old female from Virginia, was not wearing a seat belt was ejected and became pinned beneath the SUV. She was transported to Wilson Medical Center, where she is being treated for non-life threatening injuries, Veeder and 3 other occupants were also transported to Wilson Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. Veeder was issued traffic citations. The northbound passing lane of Interstate 81 north was closed during the investigation.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 71 year old Debra Sanford of Garrattsville for 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Driving While Intoxicated following an investigation into a motor vehicle accident in the Town of New Lisbon, Sanford is accused of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of narcotics, and possessed 2 different illegal types of controlled substances on her person, she was ordered to appear in New Lisbon Town Court at a later date.

On Sunday morning at 9:14pm the City of Norwich Fire Department was dispatched for the report of a structure fire located at 6 & 6A Griffin Street in the City of Norwich. Firefighters found a working fire, crews entered the apartment building and found fire and smoke conditions within both apartments, they searched for occupants on all floors, they were able to bring the fire under control within an hour of arrival. Norwich Fire Department was assisted by the Sherburne, Oxford, North Norwich & Plymouth Fire Departments, the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and involved improperly discarded ashes from a prior campfire with the remaining ashes placed in a garbage bag on the rear porch of the home. There were no reported injuries to firefighters. 2 occupants of the home were evaluated at the scene by EMS & were released.

Old Route 17 in the Town of Sanford, will be closed to all traffic today and should be reopened to traffic on August 15. The road will be closed for a large culvert replacement, All thru traffic will need to seek alternate routes while the road is closed; A signed detour will be in place.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Deposit Fire Department responded to a house fire in the Town of Sanford. A candle had accidentally caught a chair on fire in a single family residence. The fire was able to be extinguished by the resident prior to crews arriving on scene. 20 home candle fires are reported each day across the country, If you use open flame candles, make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be knocked down easily. Keep them at least 12 inches away from anything that burns and be sure to blow out all candles when you leave a room or home, or when you go to bed.

Deposit, Eastern Broome Emergency Services and the Harpursville Fire Department were dispatched after a resident reported a smoke on the 2nd floor. the fire was quickly knocked down, it was determined that the fire started in the chimney of a wood burning stove and spread into the walls of the structure. Everyone was able to escape the residence uninjured. a 2nd alarm was requested with additional response from Afton, Windsor, Masonville & West Windsor.

Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 37 year old Scott Hanrahan of Sanford for Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Possession of an Assault Weapon & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. On Saturday Broome County Sheriff’s Road Patrol conducted a traffic stop on Route I-86 West in the Town of Windsor, deputies located cocaine, along with various assault weapons & multiple rounds of ammunition, Hanrahan had previous felony convictions & is facing new charges for illegal weapon and drug possession following the traffic stop. Hanrahan was arraigned at Central Arraignment Part and remains in custody at the Broome County Correctional Facility.

A motorist stopped at a house along North Sanford Road and told a resident about the fire in the woods down the road. State Police arrested 26 year old Matthew Haigis of Deposit, Friday for 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Contempt, Criminal Mischief and Criminal Obstruction of Breathing. Troopers responded to a report of a physical dispute at a residence on North Sanford Road in the town of Deposit, Haigis left the scene, the victim reported that Haigis broke into the residence, obstructed the victim’s breathing and broke a cellphone during an altercation, Haigis also violated an order of protection. A trooper located Haigis operating a vehicle in Deposit, he was taken in custody, & he was transported to Broome County Central Arraignment and Processing.
Oneonta City Officials announced that crews will install a new curb along the north side of Center Street from Yager Avenue to West Street, excluding the sections between Maple Street to Elm Street and Ivy Court to Central Avenue. The work began today & is expected to be completed August 27th, depending on the weather. night & they approved their Local Renewable Energy Law for the possible
development of solar and wind energy businesses. Guilford town Supervisor George Senek told

& State Police responded to a 2 car motor vehicle accident on State Highway
357, near Lawton Hill Road, in the Town of Franklin. Deputies reported that 55 year-old Robert Ray
of Bainbridge travelled into the opposing lane & struck an on-coming
vehicle driven by 89 year-old Richard Dickson of Jensen Beach, Florida. The Dickson vehicle subsequently ran off the
roadway and overturned in a ditch. Richard Dickson, and his 90-year-old
passenger, Helen Dickson suffered minor injuries and were transported to A.O.
Fox Hospital for treatment. Deputies later issued Ray traffic summonses for
failure to keep right and failure to wear a seatbelt.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office cleaned up “Tent City” which was located along the Chenango River behind the North Plaza on City of Norwich property. The Sheriff’s Office cleaned up between 50-60 used needles, 16 – 50 gallon sized garbage bags of garbage and other larger items that were left behind by the occupants. Clean up took several hours and involved the Norwich Fire Department, Oxford Fire Department and the City of Norwich DPW.
State DOT Officials announced that work has resumed on the $3.2 million rehabilitation of the East Bosket Road Bridge over County Route 28 in Windsor and State Route 17 in Sanford. The project, scheduled for completion this fall, will replace the concrete bridge deck and install new steel railings along each side of the structure. The approaches to the bridge also will be repaved.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 57-year-old Timothy Hunter after a warrant was issued for his arrest following a domestic dispute where he allegedly displayed a firearm; the victims fled the scene to a nearby residence & called 911. Hunter was arrested without incident and arraigned in the Town of North Norwich Court where he was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $250 cash bail.
State Police arrested 62-year-old Gary Perine of Sanford for 3rd degree Arson. On August 25, troopers and local fire departments responded to an unoccupied house fire at 28 Kenyon Hill road in the town of Sanford, troopers accuse Perine had purposely started the fire inside his home. Perine was arraigned in the town of Sanford court and was remanded to the Broome county jail with no bail set. His next court date is pending.

State Police responded Friday to a report of a 1-vehicle rollover fatal accident on State Highway 17 in the Town of Sanford. The investigation revealed that the operator of an Econoline van fell asleep at the wheel, the vehicle drifted off the road and overturned multiple times before coming to rest. 5 of the 7 occupants were transported to Wilson and Lourdes Hospitals to be evaluated for non-life threatening injuries, however, 1 Passenger; 70 year old Dennis Pitts of Rochester, was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital, he was pronounced deceased. The investigation is continuing.

A passerby called in the report, officers determined that the victim was deceased; he was identified as 55 year old Christian Savu of Sanford. State Police responded to a Broome County 911 report of a hunting accident in the Town of Sanford. 2 separate groups of hunters were hunting when 45-year-old Duane Wayman of Binghamton failed to observe another hunter & shot him. 50-year-old Andy Patrick of Johnson City was injured near his right eye, the right side of his chest and his left shoulder. He was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. All hunters possessed valid licenses, the investigation is ongoing.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 36-year-old Steven Keller of North Branch for aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the Town of Hamden. Keeler is accused of driving with a suspended license due, with an insurance lapse & also operating a vehicle with a loud exhaust. Keller was arraigned and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail in lieu of $500 bail.

Governor Cuomo announced that 5 new outdoor access projects are now complete and open to the public across New York State as part of an effort to expand recreational opportunities for sportsmen & to boost tourism. The projects include the Goodyear Lake Access Improvement project with $170,000. Upgrades were also made at Oquaga Creek, in a parking area on North Sanford Road.
