The FBI has announced the indictment of 63 year old Henry Garcia of Vero Beach Florida for "Sending a potentially hazardous material" charge, by mailing a letter last year to the New York Attorney General's Office in Albany, containing what was believed to be a biological weapon. The suspicious white powder was not a hazardous substance, the charge filed against Garcia carries a maximum term of five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

The Otsego County Office of Emergency Services announced that they have sent personnel to assist in the fighting of the Catskills area wildfires in Ulster, Sullivan & Orange Counties. Otsego County deployed 5 Hand-crews, totaling 25 firefighters, to assist in Greenwood Lake, with fire fighters from Milford, Otego, Unadilla, & West Laurens Fire Departments, as well as Otsego County Emergency Services Deputy Fire Coordinator Jeremy Hilton. Troopers were dispatched to the report of children locked inside a hot vehicle and screaming at the Oneonta Walmart parking lot on a 99 degree day. The children were exhibiting signs of distress from the heat, Good Samaritans gave the children water, they were removed from the car and were taken to Fox Hospital & 39 year old Kurtis Carpel of Mount Upton, NY was charged with 2 counts of Reckless Endangerment and 3 counts of Aggravated Driving While Impaired with Child as Passenger after an investigation revealed that he was impaired. Carpel was taken to Otsego County Jail for Centralized Processing and Arraignment.

Broome County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 44 year old Shaun Kozak of the Town of Maine following a series of larcenies at several NYSEG substations and other electrical facilities. Detectives discovered a large amount of industrial electrical equipment consistent with several reported larcenies, after conducting a search of Kozak's Garage, he was charged with 3rd degree Burglary, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property & 4th degree Grand Larceny, Kozak was taken to the Broome County Correctional Facility for arraignment.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 32 year old Emily Wood of Morris for Aggravated Harassment, following a complaint in the Town of Morris. Wood is accused of sending threatening and unwanted text messages to the victim. The defendant is set to appear in the Town of Morris Court at a later date.
Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a 2-car accident on I-86 in the Town of Windsor. During the investigation, 39 year old Michael Morgan of Queens, failed a field sobriety test & was charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs. Morgan was processed and released on tickets returnable to the Town of Windsor Court.

Firefighters from Bainbridge, Guilford, Mount Upton, Masonville, Coventry, Franklin, Trout Creek, Afton and Sidney all responded to a structure fire at the Auto Plus Store at 4 Front Street Monday Night at about 9:00 PM. Investigators are trying to determine how the fire started, the store was closed when the fire broke out, no injuries among fire fighters were reported.

The Chenango Arts Council’s annual Chenango Student Art Show will take place from March 4th to March 31st, the exhibit will open with a reception and awards ceremony on Friday March 4 beginning at 5:30 pm. The Otsego County Office of Emergency Services were requested to respond to a reported structure fire at 22 Maple Street in the Village of Gilbertsville Monday morning at about 9:15 AM. Firefighters from Gilbertsville, Morris, Mount Upton, Otego, Sidney, Wells Bridge and Otsego County EMS, all responded to the scene, 64 year old Louise Dubben was located deceased inside her residence. The Otsego County Office of Emergency Services, New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control and the New York State Police are leading investigation efforts. An investigation into the fire is ongoing.

State Police & local emergency squads responded Saturday afternoon at about 2:15 PM, to a multiple vehicle crash on State Route 7 near the Meadow Crest Park in the Town of Unadilla.  Police stated that a Chevy driven by Michael Tucker of Sidney, was traveling west bound on State Route 7, a Volkswagen Beatle was facing eastbound, driven by Jeanmarie Doelger of Bainbridge, had stopped to make a turn into a driveway when 3 motorcycles driven by Emma Stebbins of Bainbridge, Kory Bennet of Bainbridge & Ralph Bennet of Mount Upton struck the rear of the Doelger vehicle, Ralph Bennet's Motorcycle struck Tucker's Chevy & Tucker then hit a mail box.   Doelger was transported to AO Fox Hospital Tri- Town campus in Sidney, Stebbins was airlifted to Wilson Hospital, Bennett and Tucker were taken to Fox Hospital, Ralph Bennett was transported to Wilson Hospital.

Fire Companies responded to a blaze at 78 Broad Street in Morris Saturday.  The cause of the fire appears to be
electrical in nature, fire fighters from Morris as well as Gilbertsville, West
Laurens, West Oneonta, Laurens, Mount vision, Garrettsville and Pittsfield
responded.  No injuries were reported

State Police arrested a Mount Upton twice in a 30 hour
period on June 22nd & 23rd.   42 year
old Karlton Tompkins was charged on June 22nd, after he made a U-Turn to avoid
a Police DWI Road Check on State Route 7 in Unadilla, he was apprehended along
with 41 year old Jason Lowe & 25 year old Erica Marble of Sidney on drug
charges,   On June 23rd, Tompkins tried
to flee a trooper in his vehicle, which he crashed on Loomis Road in the town
of Afton, he fled on foot, followed by 2 troopers & a police Dog, a scuffle
ensued with 1 trooper injured and Tompkins bitten by the Police dog.  Tompkins was charged with Reckless
Endangerment, Reckless Driving, Driving While Ability Impaired, Resisting Arrest
and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.   Tompkins was treated at Tri Town Hospital in
Sidney; he was arraigned & was sent to the Chenango County Jail on Cash
Bail pending court action.

State Police arrested 38 year old Randy Grabo of Otego for DWI and several traffic infractions, following a 1-car vehicle accident in the town of Morris. Both Grabo and the occupant of the vehicle were taken to Bassett Hospital for further evaluation. Grabo was later released and issued tickets to return to the town of Morris Court on March 26, 2018.
47 year old Kenneth Upton of Mount Vision was indicted on a varoety of drug counts, following an arrest by Oneonta Police for allegedly selling heroin in 2016. Upton was being held in the Otsego County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond pending future court action.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 5 SUNY Delhi students, 3 were involved in a “Drug deal gone bad” in the Village of Delhi. Deputies arrested and charged 20-year-old Naciar Odindo of Mt. Vernon, & 19-year-old Khalil Baldwin of Queens, for 4th degree Grand Larceny, plus Obstructing Governmental Administration & Criminal Possession of Marihuana. Police reported that both entered the Delhi residence or 21-year-old Dylan Freid of Syracuse, to buy marijuana, but subsequently decided to steal the marihuana instead.   Baldwin and Odindo then fled on foot, Freid flagged down a Deputy and notified him of the theft of the marihuana, Baldwin & Odindo were apprehended.  Freid was charged with Criminal Sale of Marihuana & Criminal Possession of marihuana, deputies also arrested 21-year-old Thomas Hite of Morris, and 20 year old Sharif Johnson of Queens, they were released on appearance tickets returnable to the Village of Delhi Court. Police seized 11 ounces of marihuana, synthetic marihuana, $931 dollars in cash, a handgun and a digital scale. Baldwin and Odindo were arraigned & were remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $25,000 cash bail; Freid was arraigned and remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $5,000 cash bail.

State Police arrested 33-year-old Donald Wilber of Mount Upton for 2nd degree assault, criminal contempt, criminal mischief and menacing after troopers responded to a report of a physical dispute in Bainbridge Saturday Morning. Wilbur allegedly approached a vehicle stopped on Church Street, 1 of the occupants had an order of protection against Wilber, he is accused of striking the vehicle window with a baseball bat several times when the person would not leave the vehicle. The victim and the driver received head lacerations from the broken glass, Wilber was arraigned in the Town of Guilford Court and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $50,000 property bond, he faces action in Town of Bainbridge at a later date.
State Police arrested 29 year old Jonathan Robinson of Laurens for 3rd degree criminal mischief, the arrest occurred after an incident in early September at the Morris Central School parking lot, where Robinson allegedly slammed his fists down on the hood of another driver’s vehicle after a dispute, causing over $750 worth of damage. Robinson was arraigned in the Town of Morris Court and was remanded to the Otsego County Jail in lieu of $1,500 cash bail or $3,000 property bond.
State Senator Jim Seward will be at the Mount Vision Fire Department station to announce a special state grant to help fund construction of a new fire station. The Announcement will be held at 7:00 PM at the Mount Vision Fire Department at County Highway 11B.

Area School district will be holding their Graduation Exercises this weekend. Tonight, Charlotte valley & Windsor will hold their graduation ceremonies at 6:30, at 7:00 PM, graduations will be held for seniors of Afton, Deposit, Franklin, Milford, Morris, Unatego & Laurens. On Saturday AT 10:00 am, Ceremonies will begin for Sidney, Greene, Harpursville, Norwich, & Walton, at 10:30 for Gilbertsville-Mount Upton, at 10:45 for Oneonta, & 11:00 AM for Oxford Academy. Saturday afternoon graduation ceremonies will be held for Unadilla Valley at 2:00 PM & Saturday night for Bainbridge-Guilford Seniors at 7:00 PM. Edmeston seniors will graduate on Sunday afternoon.

Tomorrow is school budget vote day across the state. Locally, 2 area school districts managed to lower the tax levy slightly; they were the Milford & Afton School Districts. School that have the tax levy unchanged from last year are Walton, Delhi, Charlotte VALLEY, Deposit, Oxford Academy, Laurens, Gilbertsville Mount Upton, & Morris. Slight increases in the tax levy were in Unatego, Bainbridge Guilford, Oneonta, increases of 1% or more are proposed in the Unadilla VALLEY & Norwich Districts, 2% or more were proposed in Sidney, Greene & Franklin and more than 3% increases were proposed in Harpursville & Windsor. State officials said that the tax cap for the tri-county region was tabulated at roughly 1%.

Voting for the BG school district residents on the Budget & for the School Board seats will be held in the Bainbridge & Guilford town Halls this year. Voting will be from 12:00 Noon until 9:00 PM.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 32 year old Jeremy Morris of Oneonta & 24 year old Amanda Tolbert of Oneonta on a variety of charges in Cooperstown on January 13th. Morris was driving without a license, when he was stopped deputies found hypodermic needles, drug packaging materials, two firearms & ammunition, he was also accused of selling heroin in Oneonta. Morris was charged with Possession of a hypodermic instrument, Criminal possession of a weapon, Criminal contempt, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, & Criminal sale of a controlled substance, he was returned to the Otsego County Jail on $50,000 cash bail and $100,000 bond. Tolbert was charged with possession of a hypodermic instrument & she was wanted on an active Family Court arrest warrant. Tolbert was arraigned in the Town of Otsego Court and taken to the Otsego County Jail on $1,000 cash bail.
The town of Guilford is currently seeking candidates to fill openings on their planning board, board of assessment review, & the Mount Upton Park committee. Those interested should call the Guilford Town Clerk’s office at 895-9966; the deadline of applications is February 3rd.
