Early Thursday morning at about 4:35 AM, State Police responded to the report of an overturned refuse trailer on State Route 17 in the town of Deposit. Troopers located the truck blocking both westbound lanes. Police said that the truck traveled off the roadway and into a ditch, tipped on its side and lost all of its contents. The operator of the truck was 57 year old Danny Robertshaw of Elmira; he was taken to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City for an evaluation. No other vehicles were involved and no one else was injured. The State DOT and a DEC Spill Response team responded to the scene.
State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced the arrest of Kristina Hand, former treasurer of the Morris Central School District in Otsego County, following a joint investigation by his office, the United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New York State Police. Hand allegedly stole $22,000 from the district to fund her personal shopping; she will face court action shortly.

The State University of New York has established a task force to focus on food security issues at its 64 campuses. The SUNY system reported that 70% of its campuses have a food pantry for students or partnerships with community organizations that provide meals. SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson said the goal is for all campuses to have food pantries or arrangements with community groups that provide resources for food.

The State University of New York Board of Trustees today announced the appointment of Kristina Johnson as the 13th chancellor of SUNY, replacing Nancy Zimpher, who will step down as Chancellor in June. Johnson’s appointment is effective September 5 at an annual state salary of $560,000.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday night, An off road motorcycle accident occured approximately a mile off of Mt. Pleasant Rd., in Bainbridge. The driver of the vehicle sustained a head injury and was transported to the Sidney airport and then was airlifted via a LifeNet helicopter to the UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.
Police arrested a Johnson City man they said broke into an apartment and strangled the man living there. Johnson City Police said it started when a dog bit 26 year old Jamell Jones in the leg at 7:30 pm on Thursday outside of 180 Harrison St. Jones tried to retaliate and attacked the dog. The dog's owner tried to stop Jones but Jones struck him in the face several times. Another man tried to stop Jones and the victim ran back into his apartment. Jones chased him inside and strangled him until he became unconscious. Officials charged Jones with burglary and strangulation, both felonies. He was sent to Broome County Jail without bail.
A 25-year-old Corning woman is accused of shoplifting at the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City while five children were in her care. Kristina A. Slyter allegedly stole $1,000 in property from the Sears store. Slyter was charged with a felony count of fourth-degree grand larceny and five misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Slyter was arraigned in Village of Johnson City Court and was remanded to the Broome County jail.
