State Police are warning the public, about scams where individuals are falsely told they are “wanted on a warrant” and must pay money to avoid arrest. Scammers are contacting victims impersonating law enforcement officers, court officials, or government agencies, The victim is pressured to make payment using cash, gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or other non-traceable methods. On April 1, a victim was instructed to meet an individual who was purported to be a law enforcement officer to collect funds at a location in Bainbridge. This would have been the 3rd occasion for a sum of money to be over $100,000. After the victim handed over the cash, Troopers intervened and arrested Tushar Sharma of India for 2nd degree Grand Larceny, Scheming to Defraud & Conspiracy, he was arraigned and was released on his own recognizance, and is scheduled to appear at Bainbridge Town Court on April 20th.

Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 43 year old Himichal Sagar of India for scamming a senior citizen out of $36,000. The Liberty Police Department investigated a report of an elaborate scam that stole $36,000 from a 76-year-old Liberty resident, who had a potential virus on her computer, was contacted by someone claiming to work for the virus company, he convinced her to withdraw the money from her accounts and gave it to the man to put in a safer account while the virus was removed. Investigators found Sagar's rented vehicle at a hotel parking lot in the Town of Dickinson, Broome County deputies were called to assist and Sagar was taken into custody, the full amount of $36,000 was recovered. Sagar was charged with 3rd degree Grand Larceny & was released with an appearance ticket, but was ordered to surrender his passport to the court.

The Binghamton Police Department arrested 6 people following a shooting at 100 Susquehanna Street on Saturday. Police arrested 20 year old Lamont Weaver of Binghamton with criminal possession of a weapon & reckless endangerment, 25 year old Lytiek Gadson of Binghamton for tampering with physical evidence, 18 year old India Tombs of Binghamton with obstructing governmental administration, 2 underage teenagers were also arrested. Weaver was arraigned and remanded to the Broome County jail, the rest were released & the investigations is continuing.

Governor Cuomo said today that there was another slight uptick in positivity rates for those tested for COVID Thursday.  There were almost 77,000 tested, with 506 positives, for a .66% rate.  Patient Hospitalizations, the number in ICU beds & on ventilators continues to trend downward, there were 4 deaths Thursday attributed to the virus, State Health Department officials said that they are watching the numbers carefully because about 20% of the new positive in New York City were of the Delta variant, which had a horrific effect on the country of India recently.

The Governor said that the state has reached 70% of the population receiving at least one COVID Vaccine, he urged New Yorkers to complete their series of vaccinations, & state health officials will keep an eye on the Delta variant of COVID that has devastated India and is affecting Eastern Europe.

Fundraising efforts are underway for former tri-town area resident William Hurtubise, who traveled to India for work from Texas, he forgot to check his bag before leaving the states, and carried 8 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition into India.  Hurtibise was arrested on September 18th and taken into custody; family & friends in the area are trying to raise funds in the amount of $75,000 for legal expenses in order to obtain his release.  Details & fundraising can be found online at giveforward.com.
