The State DOT announced the start of the $7 million Southside Oneonta Safety and Mobility Improvement Project, which will reduce traffic congestion and enhance pedestrian access along the State Route 23 and State Route 28 corridor. The project includes extended turning lanes, a new sidewalk and an additional pedestrian crosswalk, ADA-compliant curb ramps, plus 2 new bus stops for Oneonta Public Transit users, construction will be continuing through the fall of 2027.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 43 year old Mark Andrews of Schenevus, for DWI, Refusal to take Breath Test, Failure to Keep Right, Driving on slopes and shoulders and Speed not reasonable and prudent following a 1 car property damage motor vehicle accident in the Town of Middlefield. Andrews was processed and released & will appear in Town of Middlefield Court at a later date.
38 year old Ronald Boerner of Andes pleaded guilty in the Town of Andes Court to Driving While Impaired by Drugs and was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge, he will be required to attend a Victim Impact Panel, Impaired Driver’s Program and his license will be revoked for at least six months., if he violates any terms or conditions of his conditional discharge, he could be re-sentenced to 1 year in jail. On October 15, 2025, State Police responded to a 2 car accident in Andes, they found that a vehicle was rear-ended when turning into a parking lot, Boerner failed Field Sobriety Tests and was arrested.

Attorney General Letitia James announced the sentencing of former New York State Police Trooper Christopher Baldner of Catskill for causing the death of 11-year-old Monica Goods on December 22, 2020. Baldner was found guilty on the charge of Manslaughter & was sentenced to 2 1/2 to 7 1/2 years in prison. On December 22, 2020 Tristin Goods was driving on the New York State Thruway with his wife and two young daughters, Trooper Baldner was on patrol and stopped the Goods family car for speeding. During the stop, Baldner deployed pepper spray into the interior of the car and Mr. Goods sped away, Baldner rammed his police vehicle into the rear of the Goods family's car twice, it skidded into the guard rail, flipped over, and came to rest upside down. The impact ejected Monica Goods from the car, causing her death.

The City of Oneonta Planning Commission unanimously approved the site plan for Solstice Commons, a housing project proposed by Rehabilitation Support Services. The development would be built on a 6.4-acre plot at 164 River Street, consisting of a 3-story building, the Units are designated for households earning between 30% and 70% of the area median income, with about half of the units intended for individuals living with mental illness issues. The Planning Commission determined that the project will have no adverse environmental impact.

New York had one of the steepest drops of any state in international tourism in 2025, due to the federal Tariffs, with a loss of 176,000 visitors, 2nd only to California, according to an analysis by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The report showed that as fewer visitors means less spending, which led to a smaller number of jobs in hotels and restaurants. The impact was most acute for the North Country & western New York near the Canadian border, where travel from Canada fell by more than 21%.

Binghamton Police responded Tuesday for a report of a domestic dispute with shots fired, a gas line was cut and the suspect leaving the scene in a stolen vehicle. Police pursued the vehicle into Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania State Police then continued the pursuit on Interstate 81 to Scranton. 53-year-old Diriki Birden was apprehended & was charged with 2 counts of Attempted Murder, Robbery, Criminal Use of a Firearm, multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Birden remains in the custody of the Pennsylvania State Police, where he faces additional charges in Pennsylvania. Binghamton Police recovered a firearm at the scene, No victims were struck by gunfire, no injuries were reported.

State tax receipts totaled $85.8 billion through three quarters of the State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2025-26, $2.3 billion higher than estimates released in the Division of Budget’s Mid-Year Update, according to the State Comptroller's Office. Collections were $5.9 billion higher than those through December 2024, Personal income tax receipts totaled $44.9 billion and were $1.5 billion above projections and $4.2 billion higher than the same period in SFY 2024-25, due to the impact of wage and financial market growth over the course of the year. In Broome County, the Town of Chenango will receive $560,000 construct a salt storage facility, The Friends of the Upper Delaware River, receives $458,537 to conduct an in-stream stabilization and floodplain reconnection project to improve flood resiliency, aquatic habitat, and water quality in the Upper Delaware River Watershed, and Broome County will receive $400,000 to purchase a new vacuum truck to reduce sediment flow from catch basins discharging into the Minor Tributaries to Lower North Susquehanna River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

This year is the 63rd edition of the Regatta and WCDO will once again have coverage of the event, including full team coverage on Sunday for the 70 mile races.
Governor Hochul announced that contracts have been executed for 26 large-scale land-based renewable energy projects that, upon completion, will provide more than 2.5 gigawatts of clean energy, powering more than 670,000 homes throughout the State. The projects are expected to create more than 1,900 jobs and generate more than $6 billion in private investment statewide. Contracted projects include the High Bridge Wind, in Chenango County.
City of Oneonta announced that a new traffic pattern will go into effect starting Monday, June 2nd as part of Phase I of the State DOT's Reconstruction Project of the Main & Maple Street Roundabout project. There will be Road closures that will impact Main Street, Lettis Highway, and Maple Street where they intersect. Route 23 Northbound traffic may turn onto Route 7 Eastbound, Route 7 Eastbound traffic may turn onto Route 23 Southbound,all other routes through the intersection will be closed to traffic. On Monday at the DEP Offices on Smith Street in Kingston, community leaders gathered to announce a new initiative to improve wireless connectivity across the watershed. New York City DEP Commissioner Aggarwala discussed the project’s aim to build wireless infrastructure that will not only enhance DEP operations but also address the gaps in connectivity affecting local communities. The project will help fill in "dead zones" along critical roadways and ensure better communications for first responders, in areas where cell service is unreliable. The DEP's ability to create this infrastructure on their land will allow private wireless carriers to also utilize it to provide much-needed service boost to residents and businesses.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies received a complaint last week regarding a stolen vehicle from a driveway in the Town of Tompkins. Deputies were contacted by State Police, as they had located the vehicle parked at a residence in the Town of Bainbridge. 37 year old Aaron Howard of Walton was charged with Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property and Unauthorized use of a Motor Vehicle. 36 year old Courtney Condon of Walton was charged with Grand Larceny and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property.
A pilot and a rescue dog he was transporting to an animal shelter were killed when a small plane crashed near Windham Sunday. 49 year old Seuk Kim of Springfield Virginia was flying from Maryland to Albany, when his plane crashed, 2 other dogs on the plane survived. Kim died on impact, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating the crash.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection, Friends of the Upper Delaware River, and the Upper Delaware River Tailwaters Coalition will hold a public information meeting to discuss the 2023 Delaware Aqueduct shutdown. Unadilla Valley Central School District voters approved a $17.8 million capital project by a vote of 114 to 18. The renovations and improvements will be funded through state aid and an allocation from the district’s reserve funds. The project is expected to be budget neutral, with no anticipated impact on the tax levy.

New solitary confinement rules under the Humane Alternatives to Long Term Solitary Confinement Act, or HALT, that limits a person's prison time in segregated confinement housing were upheld after a federal judge dismissed a challenge filed by the state correction officers' union last year. The Act caps the amount of time an inmate can be held in segregated confinement housing to 15 days, or 20 days over a two-month period. The union petitioned to overturn the law, the court also ruled an increase in violent attacks before HALT took effect could not impact the law, which took effect April 1.
This past January, Bassett Research Institute launched an investigation surrounding health care access and the use of telemedicine within Bassett Healthcare Network. The project was funded by a $50,000 grant from the National Institute for Health Care Management, after Bassett and other Hospitals around the country had to move to a telemedicine model on the fly as COVID numbers spiked. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli released a report regarding the City of Norwich's adopted budget for the 2021 fiscal year.  The review found that officials adequately assessed the impact of the pandemic on financial operations while developing estimates for significant revenues and expenditures in the 2021 adopted budget.  A Key Recommendation, City officials should carefully monitor their budget to actual revenues and expenditures and make amendments to the budget as needed throughout the year.
The State Department of Transportation has begun the $16 million project to replace the bridge carrying U.S. Route 11 (Front Street) over Interstate 81 in the Town of Dickinson. The project will also construct roundabouts at two intersections along U.S. Route 11 and upgrade a third with new traffic signals. The estimated completion date of the project is fall of 2022.

New York State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 3.9% in November 2018, reaching its lowest level since these records began in 1976, according to preliminary figures released today by the State Department of Labor. The number of unemployed New Yorkers fell in November, from 387,500 to 379,400, its lowest level since August 1988. In addition, New York State’s private sector job count rose by 5,200, or 0.1%, to 8,231,100 in November 2018, a new, all-time high.

New York's population continues to decline faster than any other state, according to new statistics released by the U.S. Census Bureau. The report found New York was just 1 of 9 states to see a decrease in population, losing an estimated 48,510 residents between July 1, 2017, and July 1, 2018. Illinois saw the second largest population loss, followed by West Virginia, Louisiana, Hawaii, Mississippi, Alaska, Connecticut and Wyoming. New York's over 19.4 million populations is the 4th highest behind California, Texas and Florida.

Attorney General Barbara Underwood today announced the settlement of a lawsuit against FedEx that will distribute $2 million to an estimated 500 qualifying drivers who delivered packages. The Attorney General’s office filed the lawsuit back in October 2010, alleging that the drivers had been unlawfully misclassified as independent contractors and was, in fact, employees. The Attorney General's action sought restitution for violations of New York Labor Law, including unpaid overtime and unlawful deductions from wages. Qualifying drivers will be sent notice by the claims administrator and be required to submit a claim form in order to qualify for payment from the settlement fund.

State Police arrested 3 people for DWI after a 1 car crash in the town of Smyrna last Sunday. Troopers were dispatched to State Highway 80 in the town of Smyrna, when they arrived they found an unoccupied vehicle they observed another vehicle parked next to the vehicle that had crashed but it took off as soon as troopers approached. Troopers caught up to that vehicle & they accuse the driver, 43 year old Raymond Haitian Jr of Georgetown of driving while Intoxicated. The investigation revealed that 34 year old Kyle Dulian of Tonawanda was operating the original vehicle that had crashed and was also one of the occupants in Haitian's vehicle. Dulian was arrested for DWI. While troopers were still on scene, 34 year old Alicia Martin of Georgetown arrived looking for her friend, she was also arrested for DWI. All 3 will appear in court in January to answer to the charges.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District is in the process of updating the Master Plan for the East Sidney Lake Project. THE Army Core of Engineers is preparing an environmental assessment in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 to assess the impact of the Master Plan Revision to the human and natural environment. A public review meeting will be held after the initial public comment period, ending January 11, 2019, to allow opportunity for the public to submit ideas, comments, and feedback on the Draft Master Plan and Draft Environmental Assessment, the public meeting is planned for some time in April 2019. The Oneonta Department of Public Service will be replacing a water main valve located on Ann Street today, starting at 8:00 AM, Water outages will begin at 9:00 AM. Residents on Ann Street, West Ann, Meckley Ave, Baker Street, and Wilcox Ave will be without water for the duration of the project. River Street residents from Meckley to Wilcox Ave will also experience a water outage during work. The Chobani Foundation announced the recipients of Their 1st Community Impact Fund, which will provide $100,000 in grant funds to 4 beneficiaries locally. The Sidney Central School District was awarded $21,000, to incorporate a food truck into its nutritional education program. The Catskill Development Foundation was awarded $28,150 for a food and agricultural entrepreneur training program at Delaware County FoodWorks+, The Oxford Academy and Central School District was granted $30,000 to fund the salaries of 25 students working for local businesses in the 10-month Career Pathways Program, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County received $20,850 to provide marketing assistance for farmers and managers of farmers markets looking to expand their businesses. Governor Cuomo’s office announced on Tuesday of their goal to create a program for regulated marijuana use next year. The governor’s office hosted the listening sessions throughout September and October to gauge community appetite for legalizing marijuana, A study by the New York City Comptroller’s office estimated that revenues from taxes on regulated marijuana sales could bring in $3.1 billion dollars for the state. In Colorado, marijuana retailers made $1.5 billion last year and collected $247 million in taxes.

New York Farm Bureau has released its annual "Circle of Friends," naming 160 New York State Legislators to the distinguished list. The award is an indication of the individual lawmaker's support of New York agriculture and Farm Bureau. The "Circle of Friends" honor is based upon each legislator's voting record on issues of agricultural importance as well as other evidence of legislative support, including sponsorship of bills that New York Farm Bureau has either supported or opposed during the most recent legislative session, State Senators Fred Akshar, Jim Seward & John Bonacic plus Assembly members Cliff Crouch, Bill Magee, Donna Lupardo & Gary Finch were all named to the Farm Bureaus “Circle of Friends" again this year.

Governor Andrew Cuomo's office has announced the start of a child care availability task force. The group is comprised of representatives from the child care provider community, the business community, unions that represent child care providers, representatives from several state agencies and local departments of social services will develop recommendations to make quality, affordable child care accessible across the state. The task force met for the first time on Wednesday.

Voters in the Unadilla Valley School district have until 8:00 tonight to vote on the district's proposed 10 million dollar capital improvement project. Voting is being held at the District Office Lobby.

The Food and Drug Administration announced today that Del Monte Foods has recalled more than 64,000 cases of "Fiesta Corn" seasoned with red and green peppers. So far there had been no reports of illness, Del Monte determined the cans had not been properly sterilized, leading to the risk of spoilage. State Police have located James Sitts, who was wanted on an arrest warrant out of the town of Oneonta Court for 2 counts of Grand Larceny. Sitts was located and arrested by City of Oneonta Police Officers on December 8, He was later transferred to the custody of State Police and was arraigned in the town of Oneonta Court where he was remanded to the Otsego Jail with no bail. His next court date is January 3rd.

US Postal officials announced that the construction project at the Post Office at 3619 State Route 79 in Harpursville begins today. Officials said that there may be limited interruptions as construction continues; there will be no changes to hours for the postal window service or the lobby. There is also no impact to delivery services made by the Post Office as a result of the work. The work is expected to approximately two weeks.

The State DEC extended the public comment period on the draft permit for the proposed, federally regulated Constitution Pipeline, as well as the upgrade to the Iroquois Wright Compressor station in Schoharie County, by an additional 28 days. Public comments on the proposed project will be accepted through Friday, February 27th at 5:00PM. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission was responsible for conducting an environmental review of the project; they issued a final Environmental Impact Statement in October. State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley led a coalition of 17 states to file a brief in the U.S. Supreme Court urging them to uphold the interpretation of the federal Fair Housing Act. The Inclusive Communities Project had proven a low-income housing tax credits program resulted in a disparate impact on African-American residents in violation of the Fair Housing Act. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments in the case on Wednesday, January 21, 2015.
