Attorneys for Payton Gendron of Conklin are trying to have his hate crime trial moved to New York City this year, where they feel that Gendron may get a fairer trial due to the diversity of the jury pool in New York City. Gendron is accused of shooting 10 Black people at a Buffalo supermarket in May of 2022, The U.S. Attorney's office in Buffalo has not responded to the request, meanwhile, Gendron is serving a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole after pleading guilty in November 2022 to multiple charges, including murder, federal prosecutors are expected to seek the death penalty of Gendron is convicted on the hate crime charges.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 18-year-old Joshua Davis, of Downsville Thursday on a multitude of charges following a 6-month investigation into sex crimes involving numerous victims. Davis is charged with 2 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, 6 counts of sexual misconduct, and 7 counts of 2nd degree Rape, for allegedly engaging in sexual contact with a child, and other related incidents. Davis was arraigned and was released on his own recognizance, he then surrendered to Deputies on 5 additional counts of sexual misconduct, from a separate investigation, he was arraigned in Walton Village Court on the 2nd round of charges & is scheduled to re-appear at Walton Village Court at a later date.

State Police & local law enforcement agencies, will increase patrols to crack down on drunk and drugged driving and other traffic infractions this 4th of July weekend. Troopers will conduct sobriety checkpoints, along with speeding and seat belt enforcement details, & they will also be looking for distracted motorists using their phones and other electronic devices while behind the wheel. Drivers should also remember to “move over” for stopped emergency and hazard vehicles stopped on the side of the road. State Police will also be targeting the illegal sale of alcohol to minors during the enforcement period from Saturday through midnight Tuesday, July 4th

State Police and local law enforcement will increase patrols to crack down on drivers who violate the law this Fourth of July weekend. Last year, State Police issued more than 10,200 vehicle and traffic tickets during the 4th of July weekend. Troopers arrested more than 180 people for DWI and responded to more than 650 accidents, two of which resulted in fatalities. During the enforcement, drivers can expect a number of sobriety checkpoints and DWI patrols. Law enforcement will also be looking for motorists who are using their phones and other electronic devices while behind the wheel. Drivers should also remember to “move over” for stopped emergency and hazard vehicles stopped on the side of the road when they travel New York roadways.

Governor Cuomo repeated that ethics reform remains the top issue in relation to a new state budget, and that reports that there is a deal close at hand with the state senate republican leadership is premature. Cuomo said that the second major issue in the budget is education, & how to address and fix a broken education bureaucracy. The state budget is due April 1st, the governor said he would not sign a budget without ethics reforms; the State Assembly Leadership is in agreement with the Governor on that issue.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 51 year Donald Scott of Afton following an investigation into the manufacturing of methamphetamines. Deputies responded to 9 Blowers Hill in the Town of Afton after receiving information of a “1- pot” meth lab. Deputies reported that Lab equipment & chemicals used in the cooking process. The State Police assisted with the investigation & with the destruction of hazardous materials. Scott was charged with Unlawful Manufacturing Methamphetamines, he was arraigned in the Town of Afton Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $25,000 cash bail.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation that protects young children by expanding the ban on the sale of products containing TRIS, a cancer-causing chemical used as a flame retardant. The new law expands the definition of TRIS to include an additional chemical, TDCPP from being used in consumer child care products, including baby products, toys, car seats, nursing pillows, crib mattresses, strollers and other items intended for use by children under three years of age. Alternative flame-retardants are available as a substitute for TRIS, ensuring that these products can remain essentially the same but with reduced children’s exposure to the chemical.
