The Delaware County Board of Supervisors approved of a plan to safeguard an original County landfill cell, County Solid Waste Manager Tyson Robb Explains:

Robb said that the project has been slowed down somewhat with all of the rain in the County since the start of the project.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office has responded to the scene of a car crashing into a tree in the Village of Milford at about 1:00 PM today on State Route 28. The Otsego County Sheriff's Office, Otsego County EMS and the Milford Fire Department were currently at the scene, initial reports suggest that the car left the roadway and struck a tree. Traffic may be delayed in that area for clean up & accident reconstruction work.

The Delaware County Sheriff's Office is seeking the public's assistance in locating 39 year old Stephanie White, who is wanted on a probation violation. White is described as a white female, about 5'1" with brown hair & hazel eyes, anyone with information should call 607-832-5555 or go to "Submit A Tip" on the Sheriff's Office App.

The Afton Central School District closed at 11:30 this morning & all after school activities are canceled. The water in Afton was discolored or dirty, the Village of Afton Public Works Department told WCDO News that there was no water main break, but road crews using jack hammers adversely affected the quality of the water earlier today, it should clear up and there is NO order to boil water in effect.

Delaware County Public Health, the New York National Guard and State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, is hosting a Citizen Preparedness Training Event today in Walton, DCPH Spokesperson Isabella Ziolkowski comments:

The Delaware County Business Alliance reminds members to Nominate your favorite businesses for the annual Business Awards. All nominees must be Delaware County Business Alliance members, Nominations may be made in three categories: Business of the Year, Rising Star New Business, and Business Advocate. The National Weather service still has a Winter Storm Warning until 1:00 AM Saturday.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation to ban the sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits at retail pet stores, aiming to end the puppy mill-to-pet store pipeline and stop abusive breeders. The legislation will take effect in 2024, following studies that showed that many of these animals have health issues resulting from poor breeding and can cost families thousands of dollars in veterinary care.

The Sidney Chamber of Commerce will be awarding their annual Holly Jolly Spirit Award, which will go to the resident with the best decorated house for the Holidays, the decision will be made on Sunday.

The Afton Central School Drama Club will present the "Wizard of Oz" tonight & Saturday Night at 7:00 PM at the Afton Central School Auditorium, in case of Inclement weather & school being closed on Friday, the Friday night performance will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday.

The Gateway Alliance Church on Circle Drive in Sidney will hold a free Christmas Community Dinner on Sunday from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 PM, all are invited to attend.

Sidney Police arrested 36 year old Brittany Marino of Gloversville on an arrest warrant Monday. This arrest stems from a 2021 joint investigation, between the Sidney Police Department and the Department of Homeland Security, into the possession of firearms by a person who is prohibited from possessing firearms. Marino is accused of purchasing several firearms when she lived in Sidney, & then giving them to a person who is prohibited from possessing them. Marino was charged with One count of Criminal sale of a firearm in the first degree: ten or more firearms, she was arraigned in Village of Sidney Court where she was released on her own recognizance to appear back in court at a later date.

The Deposit Fire Department and Eastern Broome Emergency Services responded to a house fire in the Town of Sanford, Oquaga Lake Road was closed between Old Route 17 and Hanson Road. No injuries were reported, the structure sustained significant fire damage. Mutual aid was provided by fire fighters from Windsor, West Windsor, Harpursville, Ouaquaga and Afton.

Agriculture in New York state paid close to $1 billion in wages and produced roughly $3.3 billion in gross domestic product in 2021, according to a report by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. The sector has proved to be among the most resilient during the COVID-19 pandemic, losing just 1% of jobs in 2020 compared to the statewide annual employment loss of 8.7%. Both employment and wages in the farming sector grew in 2021 to reach new highs of 23,868 employees and $970.2 million in wages.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 32 year old Amanda Hoyt of Binghamton, pleaded guilty to the felony offense of Attempted Burglary in the Second Degree. In January, Hoyt illegally entered a St. Charles Street apartment in the Village of Johnson City and struck the resident in the arm with a hammer causing injury. Hoyt is a Second Violent Felony Offender and will be sentenced to 5 years in state prison on November 15th.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a Fight-in-Progress Complaint in the Hamlet of Arkville on July 16th. Rolland Billadeau of Shandaken allegedly pushed and struck the victim, Billadeau was located on August 21st and was served with a criminal summons on the charge of Harassment in the Second Degree. Billadeau is scheduled to appear before the Town of Middletown Court at a later date to answer for the charge. Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted by members of the New York State Police.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert for Perdue’s frozen ready-to-eat chicken breast tenders “gluten free”, They may be contaminated with small pieces of clear plastic and blue dye. Officials advise that consumers return the product to the store where it was purchased or throw it away.

Hospice & Palliative Care of Chenango County are collecting items for their 2022 home made sale, which will be held in October, Hospice Spokesperson Sarah Green told WCDO News what kind of home made items they are looking for:

The Election results have been tabulated; in the 19th Congressional District, special election, Pat Ryan appears to have defeated Republican Marcus Molinaro to fill the Congressional seat through the end of this year. 51st State Senate District, incumbent Republican Peter Oberacker won & will be on the ballot in November. In the 52nd State Senate District, Lea Webb won the Democratic party nomination, and will face Republican Rich David in November. In the 19th Congressional District, the Democratic Party Primary Josh Riley is the winner & he will appear on the Ballot in November for the term starting January 1st 2023.

More American Red Cross Blood Drives are scheduled locally today, one will be held in Walton from 12:00 Noon until 5:00 PM at the New Hope Community Church, 45 Stockton Avenue, another will be held in Cooperstown, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church on Elm Street. Donors can schedule an appointment to give using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

The State Department of Health will be operating a COVID-19 vaccination clinic on the grounds of the Great New York State Fair in Syracuse during its entire 13-day run, beginning August 24. The clinic will be open from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. every day of the fair, inside the Exposition Center. Access to the clinic is included with Fair admission. There is no charge for the vaccines or boosters.

State Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos of Long Island is being investigated by federal authorities for his outside income. Skelos reported income from a Long Island Law Firm of $150,000 to $250,000 dollars; he also listed a large investment with a Pharmaceutical company. His Assembly counterpart Sheldon Silver was arrested last week on corruption charges following a federal investigation.

Governor Cuomo announced that the average wait time at state-run DMV offices was reduced to 30 minutes, down from an 72 minutes only 2 years ago. State officials said the “dramatic reduction” was achieved through a two-year process that included a new reservation system, expanded office hours, New technology at call centers, Greeters who direct new customers to where they need to go & a redesigned DMV website.

State Police from Sidney arrested 22 year old Jacob Richie of Unadilla for Identity Theft, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property & Petty Larceny. The arrest followed the report of a missing debit card from a residence on PlankenHorn Road in Sidney, Richie was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Sidney Court on February 12th.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Town of Unadilla man for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.  39 year old Jacob Conklin was charged following a traffic stop in the Village of Afton, where Conklin was found to be in possession of heroin. He was taken into custody and processed, he is scheduled to appear in the Village of Afton Court at a later date.

A fundraiser has been scheduled Saturday for WCDO's Jim Tomeo, who is facing medical bills following a December stroke. The fundraiser will be a Pancake Breakfast at the Masonville Federated Church from 7:00 to 10:30 AM.
