Broome County Sheriff's Office will hold the 1st of 4 Public Safety Town Halls this Thursday’s meeting at the Town of Chenango Town Hall from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Sheriff Akshar, Undersheriff Davis and members of the Sheriff's Office team will be present to discuss issues, answer questions. The Town of Chenango Town Hall is located at 1529 State Route 12, Binghamton.

State Police, the FBI & local law enforcement agencies arrested 20 year old Peter Howard of Louisville Kentucky, who is a student at Hamilton College in Clinton, Howard is accused of posting a a false alert of a possible active shooter situation at the Hamilton Campus, on a social media site called Jodel. No active threat was found, students were told to shelter in place during the investigation, Howard was arrested on Sunday and charged with making a threat of mass harm.

The Board of Trustees of Hartwick College announced today that they have selected Darren Reisberg, executive vice president and chief strategy officer at the Joyce Foundation, as the College’s 11th president, he will take office on August 1, replacing Dr. Margaret Drugovich, who announced her retirement earlier this after serving as Hartwick College President for 14 years.

Governor Cuomo announced a joint effort by state agencies to crack down on underage drinking on college campuses and in college towns as the fall semester begins. The State Liquor Authority and the State DMV, working with local law enforcement agencies, will conduct statewide sweeps of locations holding liquor licenses, including bars, restaurants, liquor stores and grocery stores, looking for fake IDs and illegal sales to minors. The combined enforcement effort will begin immediately, Persons under the age of 21 found to be using fake IDs or false documents with the intent of purchasing alcohol can be arrested and have their license revoked for a minimum of 90 days or up to one year. Businesses charged by the State Liquor Authority with underage sales face civil penalties of up to $10,000 per violation, and repeat offenders also face potential suspension or revocation of their liquor licenses.
Commerce Chenango and the Hamilton Business Alliance will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Rogers Environmental Education Center. Oneonta Police have charged a Hartwick College student with Assault. 20-year-old Nabill Maiyaki of Mohegan Lake is accused of stabbing an unidentified male victim during an altercation on Elm Street at about 1:00 AM Saturday, he has been charged with 2nd-degree assault & criminal possession of a weapon. The injured male was stabbed in a leg and in the abdomen, and was taken to Fox Hospital with non- life threatening injuries Maiyaki was held being held on bail pending court action

President Obama's visit to Binghamton University this Friday has been limited to a very small audience. Tickets will be distributed Wednesday at noon via an online lottery pool. There will only be one entry permitted per person, and only one ticket will be awarded per entry selected. Participation is limited to students, faculty and staff at B.U., along with a few select local dignitaries including Broome County Executive Debbie Preston, Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan and Vestal Supervisor John Schaffer. The President will lay out a plan to make college more affordable, tackle rising costs, and improve value for students and their families. The town hall event will take place inside the Old University Union at 12:45 on Friday, although attendees will need to be in place much earlier. Traffic will be disrupted on campus for much of the day with the main entrance and campus loop closed from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. The university is still working on determining designated areas for anti-fracking or gun rights protestors.
A car drove into the M&T Bank on Upper Front Street Binghamton at around 11:10 a.m. Tuesday. New York State Police and the Chenango Fire Department responded to the scene. Paula Hamilton, 90, of Harpursville, hit the accelerator when she meant to hit the brake. Her silver Honda drove through a handicapped space in the front of the building, knocked over a sign and drove through the front window. Hamilton was taken to Lourdes hospital for precautionary measures. No one else was injured.
Elaine Sortino, a 1971 graduate of SUNY Oneonta and a member of the college’s athletics Hall of Fame, succumbed to a lengthy battle with cancer Sunday. Sortino, who was entering her 35th season as the head softball coach at the University of Massachusetts, was 64 years old.
