New York State agency overtime costs increased 22.7% in 2025 for a total of $1.6 billion, while the number of overtime hours increased by 5.9%, according to the annual report by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The size of the state workforce grew for a third straight year in 2025 increasing by 2.7%, Overtime hours and earnings have continued to surge at the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, The figures were influenced by the strike by some Corrections employees that took place between Feb. 17, and March 10, 2025.

The Unadilla Fire Department responded Thursday Afternoon at about 2:10 PM to a reported brush fire in the town of Unadilla. 1st arriving crews encountered a large brush fire making it's way up a hillside, NYSEG crews responded to turn off power lines, Firefighters were able to contain the fire and then attack any hot spots following the power shut off. An estimated 4.1 acres burned with all crews being back in service around 5:30 PM. No injuries were reported.

Sidney Police Department responded to a 3 vehicle head on collision Thursday Morning at about 10:20 AM on State Route 8 & River Street. Upon arrival, officers determined that a commercial Box Truck traveling southbound on State Route 8, was involved in a head-on collision with 2 vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. 1 driver sustained injuries and was transported by Lifenet to Upstate Medical University Hospital for treatment. The other two drivers were treated at Tri-Town Regional Hospital and subsequently released. The Sidney Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Sidney Fire Department, Sidney EMS, State Police & DOT, among others, The cause of the accident remains under investigation at this time.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 40 year old Christopher Ashton of Otego for Sex Offender Failure to Notify Change of Address. The investigation revealed that Ashton, who is a level 1 sex offender, did not report a change of address to the State Sex Offender Registry within 10 days, he was arrested, processed and was released on an Appearance Ticket to the Town of Middlefield Court at a later date, he was being held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility on a parole warrant.

New York State recently announced more than $25.5 million in grants to support 29 water quality and climate resiliency projects in the State DEC’s Region 7. In Broome County, the Town of Chenango will receive $560,000 construct a salt storage facility, The Friends of the Upper Delaware River, receives $458,537 to conduct an in-stream stabilization and floodplain reconnection project to improve flood resiliency, aquatic habitat, and water quality in the Upper Delaware River Watershed, and Broome County will receive $400,000 to purchase a new vacuum truck to reduce sediment flow from catch basins discharging into the Minor Tributaries to Lower North Susquehanna River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

State Police responded to South Hall of the SUNY Morrisville Campus Monday afternoon at 3:45 pm, they found a 20-year-old male, who was not a student, with a gunshot wound to the neck. Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies responded on August 20th, to a 2 car motor vehicle accident in the Town of Sidney, in which one driver had reportedly left the scene. With the assistance of the Village of Sidney Police Department, the driver was identified as 38-year-old Joshua Crisell of Sidney, and the vehicle was located at a residence in Sidney. Deputies charged Crisell with Reckless Driving, driving to left of pavement markings, failure to keep right and leaving the scene of a property damage accident, Crisell was released on an appearance ticket for the Town of Sidney Town Court at a later date.
State Police issued 109 tickets during a four-hour long Operation Hard Hat detail within a work zone on Interstate 81 in the town of Chenango Thursday. The detail was a combined effort with the State Police and the Broome County Sheriff’s Department, Crews from the DOT were repairing the bridge rail over Front Street. The area is a 55mph zone and just the left lane was closed, while two others were still open to accommodate traffic. Troopers charged 27 for using cell phones while driving, 36 for speeding, 27 for no seat belt, 19 other cvarious tickets were issued.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol responded Saturday to a report of a burglary on Boswell Hill Road in the Town of Union. The homeowner spotted 2 individuals with flashlights inside his house with his home security camera system and called 911. Deputies, with State Police, located the 2 suspects, they fled into a wooded area, but were apprehended. Arrested were 43 year old Matthew Ortloff of Chenango Forks, & 45 year old Jeremiah Johnson of Endicott. The pair were charged with Burglary, Conspiracy, Possession of burglar tools, criminal mischief, along with seve4ral other related charges, they were arraigned and remain in custody at the Broome County Correctional Facility.

Bainbridge Guilford Superintendent Tim Ryan released a statement about an incident Friday evening as B-G was hosting a football game with Walton. During the game administration was notified that a student was overheard saying he had a gun at the game, law enforcement was notified, the student was located and was taken away from the game & Staff remained with the student until law enforcement arrived and took over the situation. Ryan stated that there was no fight at the game and there was no gun, there was no need to suspend or cancel the game or send everyone home. Law enforcement continued to meet with the student and his family, they left the premises and law enforcement officers remained at the game until the conclusion.
Broome County Sheriff Road Patrol deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident involving 2 vehicles Early Sunday morning on Morgan Road in the Town of Binghamton. Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar identified the deceased as 29 year old Charles Burrell of Conklin, who was ejected from 1 of the vehicles, he said that the operators of the 2 vehicles were engaged in a continuing dispute over women & narcotics, they engaged in a road rage incident that ended with the fatality. 20 year old Cody Diffendorf of Kirkwood & 26 year old James MacDowall of Binghamton were each charged with 2nd degree manslaughter, both are in the custody of the Broome County Correctional facility pending future court action.

State Police arrested 20 year old Skylar Clement of Mount Upton for 2nd degree Attempted Murder & 1st degree Assault. Troopers responded Sunday to County Route 18 and State Highway 51 in Butternuts where they discovered a victim was intentionally struck by a vehicle and the suspect fled the scene. The victim sustained serious injuries & was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City for treatment. Troopers and Investigators located the vehicle in Guilford, Clement was located in the City of Norwich and taken into custody. He was transported to the Otsego County Correctional Facility for Centralized Arraignment.
The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 43 year old James Ebert of Schenevus following an investigation of a physical altercation. Ebert was charged with 2nd degree Assault, plus Menacing & 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, after deputies responded recently to a fight in progress in the Town of Maryland. Ebert was processed & was issued an Appearance Ticket for Maryland Town Court at a later date.

Bainbridge Firefighters responded to a blaze at 104 County Route 38 shortly after Midnight last night. Bainbridge Fire Chief Fred Bell told WCDO News the the house was not occupied, & was completely destroyed, Bainbridge was assisted by firefighters from Masonville, Sidney, Coventry, Guilford, Mount Upton & Afton, there were no injuries reported, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Broome County Sheriff's Office announced that the County's #5 Most Wanted Fugitive was arrested in the Town of Union. 42 year old Matthew Knapp of Kirkwood was tracked down by the Warrants Division & was taken into custody without incident and was transported to the Broome County Correctional Facility. Knapp had been on the run since May 16th, when he absconded from probation for a Sex Offender Registration Violation, as he failed to update his address with the State Sex Offender Registry Under the Sex Offender Registration Act.
53 Baseball Hall of Fame members are expected to return to Cooperstown this weekend as they induct 2024 electees Adrian Beltré, Todd Helton, Jim Leyland and Joe Mauer into the Hall of Fame. Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 49 year old Michael Hackett of Norwich following a traffic stop in the Town of Norwich Monday. Deputies and Detectives initiated a traffic stop on a motorcycle on State Highway 12 for Vehicle and Traffic violations. During the investigation, Deputies located Methamphetamine, Cocaine, and Crack Cocaine. Hackett was charged with multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Hackett was arraigned & he was held without bail until a later court date.
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that major construction has begun on a $21.8 million project along a stretch of I-88 from Exit 18 in the town of Maryland to Exit 19 in the town of Worcester. The $21.8 million project will resurface 8.4 miles of pavement, Additionally, minor work will take place on the bridges over South Hill Road, and rehabilitation work will be done on 16 small culverts.
The State Department of Labor announced that the number of private sector jobs in New York State increased by 0.1%, to 8.35 Million in April. The State's unemployment rate decreased slightly to 4.2% in April & the State's labor force participation rate decreased slightly to 61.3%.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested the 2nd suspect of a Grand Larceny complaint. On July 15, 2023 a business in the Town of North Norwich reported that an enclosed trailer was stolen, Detectives were able to identify the 2 suspects by tracking the vehicle used in the larceny, into Oneida County by viewing security cameras, the suspects were Michael Garramone of Remsen, and Derek Crouse of Whitesboro. On July 28, 2023 Garramone was arrested, Crouse fled to Rhode Island, a warrant was issued for Crouse’s arrest. Cranston Police Department in Rhode Island was involved in a vehicle pursuit Sunday with Crouse on a motorcycle, they took Crouse into custody & he was turned over to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, he was charged with Grand Larceny & Conspiracy & was arraigned & remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on no bail pending action in Town of North Norwich Court.
The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26 year old Tyler Mitchell of Stamford, following a traffic stop in the Town of Edmeston. Mitchell was found to be operating a motor vehicle on a public highway with a suspended driver’s license, he was found to be in possession of a modified pistol that had the serial number removed, he was found to be in possession of a quantity of Methamphetamine and Suboxone. Mitchell was charged with Criminal Possession of a firearm, Criminal Possessing of a controlled Substance, among several traffic infractions, he was taken into custody and later held at the Otsego County Jail pending central arraignment.

Delaware County Deputies responded Saturday night, to Gregory Hollow Road in the Town of Colchester for a report of a truck stuck in a brook. Upon arrival, Deputies identified a male walking away from the scene, as 44-year-old Jesse Luscomb of Hamden. Luscomb had traveled onto private property with a vehicle and caused significant damage to the property, ultimately becoming disabled in mud. Luscomb was charged DWI, Uninspected Motor Vehicle and Leaving the scene of a property damage accident, Obstructing Governmental Administration, Reckless Criminal Mischief & Trespassing, Luscomb was processed and was then transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for Arraignment.

44 year old Andre Gilliam of Binghamton was arrested after a search warrant was executed on Tuesday. The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force Tuesday executed a search warrant at 174 1/2 Castle Creek Road in the Town of Chenango, they seized Fentanyl, Scales and cutting agent used for the distribution of narcotics, plus $3,790 in cash from suspected drug sales. Gilliam was charged with multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & 2 Counts of Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, he was transported to the Broome County Correctional Facility for processing and to await arraignment at Central Arraignment.
The Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 34 year old James Gay of North Norwich for Driving While Ability Impaired by drugs, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, following a traffic stop for an equipment violation in the Town of Norwich. During the investigation of the traffic stop, James was exhibiting signs of recent drug use and failed the field sobriety testing. While being taken into custody James was found with a small amount of Methamphetamine. James was processed and released on appearance Tickets to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

State Police arrested 3 people after a fight at the Lantern Hill trailer park in Oneonta Saturday. An investigation by Troopers at the scene determined that 25 year old La-Tee Baker of Oneonta, 21 year old Bryanna Patterson of Oneonta, and 23 year old Bethany Brown of Delhi, were involved in a fight, both women sustained injuries, Brown was transported to A.O. Fox Hospital. Baker and Patterson were located by Troopers walking along State Highway 23 and were arrested. They were issued appearance tickets to the Oneonta Town Court on November 21, 2023. After release from the hospital, Brown was charged with Assault, she was issued appearance tickets to the Oneonta Town Court on December 5.

Troopers were advised last week that Price took a used vehicle for a test drive from a car dealership, told them she’d like the vehicle checked out by her mechanic but never returned. An investigation revealed that on September 15, the vehicle was traveling on Interstate 90. Price and the vehicle were located at a truck stop in the town of Pembroke. The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 61 year old Ann Herberger of Gilbertsville following a traffic stop on July 17th in the Town of Butternuts. Herberger was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a vehicle, Operating a Motor Vehicle while Registration is Suspended, & Operating Motor Vehicle without Insurance. Deputies discovered that Herberger was operating a motor vehicle while her driver's license & the Vehicle's Registration was suspended. She will appear in the Town of Butternuts at a later date.
State Police in Binghamton are currently attempting to locate 17-year-old Jason Babcock Jr; who left his residence on Colesville Road in the town of Colesville on June 18th on his bicycle. The bicycle is described as a blue and white "Kent 20" BMX bike. Babcock Jr. is described as a fair skinned white male with dirty blonde hair with a longer crew cut hair style and about 6’ to 6’2” tall. State Police at Sidney responded to a crash involving a tractor trailer and SUV on State Route 8 near County Road 35 in the town of Guilford. An investigation at the scene revealed that the SUV was on State Route 35 when the vehicle entered the intersection and collided with a tractor trailer that had been traveling on State Route 8. The driver of the SUV, 27 year old Erin Hazen of South New Berlin was transported to A.O Fox Hospital - Tri Town. A passenger in the vehicle, a 3-year-old male was not injured. The driver of the tractor trailer, 51 year old Sergei Maliutin of Cohoes, did not report any injury.
Delaware County Sheriff's office arrested 33 year old Christopher Snyder of West Winfield for driving with a suspended New York State Driver’s license. On Saturday afternoon, May 27th, 2023, Sheriff’s Deputies observed a vehicle traveling on State Highway 206 in the Town of Walton, at 75 mph in a posted 55 mph zone. On Tuesday, Deputies responded to the reported theft of a truck & trailer containing a zero turn lawn mower on Mill Street in the Town of Binghamton, the truck’s owner had security cameras, & a tracking device, where the vehicle was located at Phillips Way in the Town of Binghamton, the 3 suspects, fled on foot into a creek. Deputies arrested 30 year old Heather Brewer of Endicott, 38 year old Joseph Schultz & 35 year old Ryan White of Endicott on a variety of charges including Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of stolen Property, & Conspiracy, Schultze was found to have outstanding warrants for Grand Larceny, resisting arrest, identity theft and drug charges in the State of Pennsylvania and violating parole in Albany.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection, Friends of the Upper Delaware River, and the Upper Delaware River Tailwaters Coalition will hold a public information meeting to discuss the 2023 Delaware Aqueduct shutdown. DEP officials will be discussing the details of the upcoming shutdown and repair project and how it will impact the management of the Delaware River basin reservoirs and the Upper Delaware River. The Meeting will be held on April 11th from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at the Hancock Town Hall, 661 West Main Street, Hancock, a Zoom Link can also be obtained from one of the organizing agencies.

Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 24 year old Patrick Combs of Grand Gorge pleaded guilty to Grand Larceny and Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, in Delaware County Court. Combs stole over $3,000.00 from the Roxbury Country Store, also, on January 15th, he operated a motor vehicle on State Highway 30, while impaired by drugs. Combs will be sentenced to 1-3 years in state prison for his conviction of Grand Larceny & 364 days in jail for driving while his ability was impaired by drugs, the sentences will run concurrently.
The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 34 year old Emario Lynch of the Bronx in the town of Morris for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia. Deputies observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Deputies stopped the vehicle a short time later and found it to have switched plates and no insurance, Lynch was also found to possess crack cocaine and MDMA. Lynch was released on an appearance ticket & is set to appear in the Town of Morris Court at a later date.
The Chenango County Department of Public Health is offering a free rabies clinic for Chenango County pet owners on Saturday, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Guilford Highway Department, located at 223 Marble Road in Guilford. The clinic is for Dogs Cats & Domesticated Ferrets.
