Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 35 year old Cody Borawa of Afton for Aggravated Harassment and Stalking. The investigation determined that over the course of 6 months Borawa attempted to contact the victim through emails, fake phone numbers, text messages, phone calls, third party contact through family & friends, and social media accounts after repeatedly being told to have no further communication with the victim. Borawa was released on an appearance ticket for the above charges and is to appear in the Town of Afton Court at a later date.

43 year old Jamie Viviano of Binghamton pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to 2nd degree Burglary, after Viviano’s involvement in two separate burglaries. On August 5, 2024, Viviano unlawfully entered a residential building in Binghamton, where he stole coins from a washing machine dispenser, he repeated this crime on December 13th but during the second incident, he escalated his behavior by brandishing a knife and threatening a worker at the housing complex while stealing more quarters from the machine. Viviano had already pleaded guilty to 3rd degree burglary last November for a separate incident, due to the nature of the new conviction, his sentence will be enhanced, when he is sentenced in May to 6 years in state prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision.
The Chenango County Historical Society launches the 2025 museum season with special Saturday hours from 10 am. to 4 pm. on March 1. The Community Gallery will host the works of a well known Chenango County Author & Illustrator, according to Historical society director Jessica Moquin:

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 41 year old Jason Chase of Norwich & 21 year old Danielle Froelich of Cincinnatus, following a traffic stop recently in Sherburne. Both were charged with various drug charges after packaged drugs and related materials were found during a traffic stop. Chase was wanted on an active warrant for a violent felony issued by Chenango County Court. Chase was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail and scheduled to appear in Town of Sherburne Court at a later date. Froelich was arraigned and released on an appearance ticket and is also scheduled to appear in Town of Sherburne Court at a later date.
41 year old Robert Wilson was sentenced in Broome County Court to 8 years in State Prison followed by 3 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Last July, the Broome County Special Investigations Unit executed a narcotics search warrant in Binghamton, officers seized methamphetamine, cocaine, fentanyl, packaging materials, a digital scale, and $7,796 cash from suspected drug sales.
Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested Jesse Moore of North Norwich for Criminal Mischief, Harassment, & Assault, for allegedly injuring 2 people during an altercation on February 3rd. Moore was arraigned and remanded to the Chenango County Jail.

High School Graduations are scheduled all over the Southern Tier this weekend. Hancock Commencement exercises began this morning, other districts with ceremonies today include Afton, Andes, Charlotte Valley, Deposit, Downsville, Edmeston, GMU, Laurens, Milford, Morris, South Kortright, Schenevus, Unatego & Windsor. Saturday Graduation ceremonies will include Sidney, Bainbridge Guilford, Norwich, Oneonta, Delaware Academy, Greene, Harpursville, Oxford Academy, Unadilla Valley, Sherburne Earlville & Walton. 2 area district will hold their ceremonies on Sunday, they are Cooperstown & Worcester.
State Police today announced that Troopers issued 20,952 total traffic tickets during the special “Speed Week” traffic enforcement campaign, from Monday, June 12 to Sunday, June 18 Troopers issued 10,478 tickets for speeding, Statewide, 172 people were arrested for DWI, State Police also responded to 175 personal injury crashes, including two fatal crashes. At Troop C, officers issued 1567 tickets, with 927 for speeding.
The State Comptroller's Office audited the Afton Central School District, , they found that the Afton Board and District officials did not effectively manage the District’s fund balance, so they levied more taxes than needed to fund operations and were not transparent with taxpayers. The Board annually overestimated appropriations by an average of $1.1 million or 7%. The District incurred $63,561 in unnecessary interest and other associated costs for the issuance of bonds to purchase school buses. The Comptrollers office recommended adopting realistic budgets, Reduce surplus fund balance to comply with the statutory limit to benefit taxpayers. District officials agreed with our recommendations and indicated they will take corrective action, the full report can be found at osc.state.ny.us.
State Police arrested 35 year old Heather Wrench of Coventry, for Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Grand Larceny & Petit Larceny, after a trooper and a Chenango County Deputy were dispatched to a report of a trespass on State Highway 206 in the town of Coventry. Wrench allegedly entered a vehicle and removed items, including a pistol, from a vehicle, she is also accused of trespassing several other area properties. Wrench was arrested and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail without bail.

Deputies were patrolling Sunday on State Highway 30 in the Town of Colchester, they conducted a traffic stop, Pitre was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended/Revoked Registration, Failure to turn in License Plate to DMV, Failure to Notify DMV of Address Change, and several other lesser charges, she was released on the traffic tickets and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Colchester Court at a later date to answer the charge.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a physical injury domestic dispute in the Town of Union. 66 year old Brian Sanks of the Town of Union, had attempted to smother his Girlfriend in her sleep, threatened to shoot her with a pistol, and threatened to use a taser baton on her. Sanks was taken into custody by deputies and an Extreme Risk Protection Order was subsequently issued, several weapons & drug paraphernalia were removed from Sanks residence. Sanks was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, he was arraigned and has remained in custody of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.

State Police responded Wednesday to a report of a serious SUV Rollover crash in the town of Plainfield. Troopers reported that the SUV struck an embankment and partially overturned, a 3 year-old female died from injuries sustained in the crash, 2 adults & 4 children were taken to a Utica area hospital, all of the occupants were from Rome & are not being identified at this time, The crash remains under investigation.

Some of the businesses that followed the state's laws were B&W Wines & Liquors, of Bainbridge, Mirabito's in Bainbridge & Afton, & Snake Bite Liquors in Afton. During the initiative, retail establishments are checked using a trooper in plain clothes and one or several underage operative(s) who, if asked, cannot lie about their age or give a fake date of birth. When asked for their ID they must show their real New York State ID.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies observed a vehicle traveling at 57 mph while in a posted 30 mph speed zone Sunday. Deputies identified the driver as 21 year-old Nicholas Wanamaker of Maybrook, a check of Wanamaker’s driver’s license revealed that his driving privileges were suspended in the State of New York. Deputies arrested Wanamaker for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and Speeding, Wanamaker released and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Colchester Court at a later date,

The Otsego County Department of Emergency Services announced that Dry ice and bottled water will be available for pick up this evening at the Unadilla fire station and the West Exeter fire station from 6 PM – 9 PM or while supplies last. Later this year, the Southern Tier will receive additional payments from the settlements with Endo Health Solutions, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, and Allergan. Locally Broome County receives $1.6 Million dollars, Chenango County, $308,000, Delaware County: $327,000.

The Board of Trustees of Hartwick College announced today that they have selected Darren Reisberg, executive vice president and chief strategy officer at the Joyce Foundation, as the College’s 11th president, he will take office on August 1, replacing Dr. Margaret Drugovich, who announced her retirement earlier this after serving as Hartwick College President for 14 years.
Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond awarded Deputy Samantha Acuna with the Sheriff’s Superstar Award for meritorious service while in the performance of duty. On April 8th, Deputy Acuna was dispatched to a “routine” welfare check following a call to 911 with an “open line”. Upon gaining entrance to the residence, Deputy Acuna found a male victim suffering from an apparent stroke, rendered first aid and immediately called for medical assistance, and likely saved the victim’s life.
State Police members from Troop C removed 42 impaired drivers from the roadways in the Southern Tier in March. The majority of the charges stem from misdemeanor Driving While Intoxicated charges, several people were charged with other crimes, including robbery, and drug possession.
42-year-old Jeremie Hoyt of Davenport, New York, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to 2 counts of sexual exploitation of a child, 2 counts of distribution of child pornography, and 1 count of possession of child pornography. Hoyt is being held pending sentencing scheduled for August 24, 2022, he faces at least 15 years and up to 110 years imprisonment on the charges, and a fine of up to $250,000.

Attorney General Letitia James announced that Cross Tie Disposal of Kentucky and company Vice President Harold Young are charged in a 42-count indictment that includes 30 counts of Falsifying Business Records and 11 counts of Endangering Public Health, Safety or the Environment. Cross Tie was supposed to dispose of old wood beams that were coated with creosote at a regulated site in Erie County but instead dumped the ties, contaminated with 11 hazardous substances at a property in Chenango County. The railroad ties have been removed as part of the Chenango County Industrial Development Agency’s Chenango County Rail Revitalization Services project in 2015 to repair and improve railroad tracks throughout the county.
Attorney General Letitia James announced that Cross Tie Disposal of Kentucky and company Vice President Harold Young are charged in a 42-count indictment that includes 30 counts of Falsifying Business Records and 11 counts of Endangering Public Health, Safety or the Environment. Cross Tie was supposed to dispose of old wood beams that were coated with creosote at a regulated site in Erie County but instead dumped the ties, contaminated with 11 hazardous substances at a property in Chenango County. The railroad ties have been removed as part of the Chenango County Industrial Development Agency’s Chenango County Rail Revitalization Services project in 2015 to repair and improve railroad tracks throughout the county.
Governor Kathy Hochul’s administration has lifted a 3-month pause on a new law that will require nursing homes to meet minimum standards for staffing and patient care. The law creates minimum staffing ratios and requires that nursing home residents get at least 3.5 hours per day of direct nursing care, it was approved in 2021 in response to the nursing home crisis during the pandemic, when thousands of Nursing Home residents died from the virus.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office assisted the US Marshals in executing an arrest warrant in the Town of Maryland on 59 year old Michael Hawkins for failure to register as a sex offender. Hawkins was convicted in 1997 for child molestation in Rhode Island, he faces a maximum term of 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.
Governor Kathy Hochul & the State Legislature failed to pass the state budget on time Friday. Negotiations over bail reform, to-go drinks and New York City casinos stalled the completion of the budget, If the budget isn’t passed today, paychecks for state government employees will be delayed, according to state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.

On October 21st, Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies observed a vehicle traveling at 68 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour zone on State Highway 8 in Masonville. 52-year-old Jack Mason of Whitney Point, was stopped, his license was revoked due to failure to answer a prior summons from the Sidney Town Court. Mason was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operator of a Motor Vehicle, Speeding, Failure to Use a Turn Signal, and Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Stop Lamps. Mason was later released on traffic tickets to Masonville Town Court at a later date.

Governor Cuomo announced that Hospitalizations from COVID 19 have dropped to 576, the lowest number since March 17th. The number of patients on respirators has dropped to 70; there were 5 deaths from the virus Thursday statewide, the death toll is up to 25,150. 644 people tested positive Thursday, about .9% of all tested, bringing the Statewide Total to 415,014.
Raymond Corporation in Greene has had their manufacturing portion of their facility closed Thursday & today, after an employee tested positive for COVID 19. Gillibrand also called for the Trump Administration to renew the $600 week unemployment to those unemployed due to the pandemic, those benefits along with provisions that keep people from being evicted, expire at midnight tonight.
Governor Cuomo announced more than $30 million to enhance COVID-19 contact tracing and flu prevention in advance of the fall flu season. Oneonta police arrested 40 year old Brian Boore of Oneonta for 1st & 2nd degree Assault, for allegedly stabbing another person Tuesday. The victim was taken to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, Boore was located a short distance away from the scene, the investigation is continuing.
The Oneonta Police Department is investigating a series of slashed tires Sunday night into Monday morning in the City's East End. Police are using surveillance video to try to determine the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call Oneonta Police at 432-1111.

Due to the rising cases of COVID-19 in Broome County the Binghamton Rumble Ponies have decided to postpone "A Night at Rumble Town," originally scheduled for July 31st. Fans who had already purchased tickets will be receiving an email in the coming days with information on refunds for the event. As soon as it is safe to host fans at NYSEG Stadium, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies will post information on BINGRP.com along with their Facebook and Twitter pages.
SUNY Broome will be hosting a virtual graduation to celebrate the class of 2020 on Saturday. Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 25-year-old Alizabeth Ramos of Brooklyn Friday
evening, on a charge of Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle,

Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 25-year-old Alizabeth Ramos of Brooklyn Friday

following a traffic stop on in the Town of Masonville. Ramos was also issued
tickets for Unlicensed Operator, and Speeding, she was released on an
appearance ticket and is scheduled to return to the Town of Masonville Court at

Oneonta Police responded Saturday to
a residence on Chestnut Street, for a report of a deceased person. Officers discovered 20 year old Nicolas
Stagnitta from Patchogue, Long Island, who was a student at the State
University at Oneonta, the initial investigation and autopsy revealed that
Stagnitta took his own life; however, the investigation is continuing pending

Otsego County Sheriff's Department arrested 20 year old Christopher Robinson of the Town of Maryland, following allegations of an adult having sexual encounters with a juvenile. Robinson was charged with 2nd degree Rape & Criminal Sexual Act, for allegedly performing sexual acts with a female who was 14 & 15 years old at the time of the incidents in question. Robinson was arraigned in the Town of Worcester Court & is being held on $5,000 dollars cash bail or $10,000 bond at the Otsego County Jail.
Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville and the Wildlife Conservation Center of Virginia announced that Tajiri, the calf of April born before the whole world last year, will be transported to the Carolina Wildlife Conservation Park outside of Raleigh, North Carolina. Animal Adventure Park owner Jordan Patch stated that this move will allow Tajiri to play a vital role in the conservation and propagation initiatives that align with the facilities mission statements. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 55 year old Douglas Jones of Hamden, Friday for Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The arrest occurred following an investigation regarding a Facebook messenger conversation between Jones and a child under the age of 17, where Jones is accused of acting in a manner likely to be injurious to the child’s mental and moral well-being. Jones was arraigned & was released upon his own recognizance, and scheduled to appear before the Town of Davenport Court at a later date.
State Police arrested 41 year old Bobbi Falank of Sidney for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a BAC of .22%. Troopers were dispatched to a report of an erratic driver on Woodland Road in Sidney who had driven through a lawn. Troopers caught up with the Falank, she was arrested and released on appearance tickets returnable to the town of Sidney Court on September 20th.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a Hancock couple for allegedly possessing stolen Snowmobiles from Pennsylvania & possessing drugs packaged for sale. Deputies recovered 4 stolen snowmobiles in Hancock and Deposit, they arrested 28 year old Matthew Mason of Hancock, for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property for allegedly possessing the stolen snowmobile trailer and 4 snowmobiles, he was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond. Deputies had also arrested 43 year old Tammy Moore on 2 separate occasions once for Aggravated DWI, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & later for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. State Police arrested 38 year old Michael Sullivan of Agawam, Massachusetts & 30 year old Gabrielle Graham of Pittsfield, Massachusetts for criminal possession of a controlled substance, Sullivan was additionally charged with Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. Troopers received a complaint of a disabled vehicle on I-88 in the town of Afton; they located marijuana and a smoking pipe with residue. Sullivan and Graham were arraigned in the town of Afton Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $1,000 cash bail or $2,000 bond. Their next court date is scheduled for April 23, 2018 in the town of Afton Court.
Johnson City Police Department announced that 29-year-old Corey Robinson is being detained in Marietta, Georgia, he is suspected of murdering 46 year old Erika Smith Cunningham, who was found dead at 92 Crocker Avenue Sunday morning. An arrest warrant was issued on Thursday and Robinson was taken into custody a few hours later. Robinson will be charged with 2nd degree murder, Extradition proceedings have begun, Robinson is expected to be returned to Broome County in about a week.
The controversial NG Advantage natural gas compressor station project in Port Crane is being scrapped by the company, even after they received approval for the project by the Town of Fenton planning board a year ago. NG sold some of the property already to Carrier Services Corporation of Ohio; they are expected to request a rezoning of the property for commercial or industrial activity.

Chenango County Court Judge Frank Revoir made only a mild adjustment to the bail of Ernest Franklin of Guilford this week. Franklin's cash bail remained the same at $125,000, bond was reduced from $250,000 to $200,000 Thursday, Franklin is accused of planning the murder of his special needs son Jeffrey Franklin & setting fire to the family home to cover up the murder. The State DEC, the Chautauqua County DA's Office & and Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department announced that 34 year old Thomas Jadlowski of Sherman, surrendered to officers, he is accused of shooting his neighbor, 43 year old Rosemary Bilquist, while she was walking her dogs on November 22nd. Jadlowski was arraigned on a 2-count indictment for 2nd degree manslaughter & hunting after legal hours. Billquist died from a gunshot wound at a local hospital within hours of the incident.

A public meeting to accept comments on the draft Northern Chenango Unit Management Plan will be held on Thursday, March 2, at 7:00 PM. The Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center in Sherburne will host the meeting; Public comments are being accepted until May 2nd. The state land covers approximately 15,800 acres in Chenango and Madison counties. The draft UMP has been developed to address management activities on these state properties. DEC staff will briefly present highlights of the draft plan at the public meeting, and the public will have an opportunity to comment on the plan
State Police arrested 44-year-old Kevin Roof of Binghamton, for 2nd degree Burglary. After consultation with Chenango County District Attorney Joseph McBride, State Police arrested Roof after his release from the hospital where he had been treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his upper leg, which he received during the course of his criminal conduct in the town of Afton on Algerine street on January 30th. Roof was arraigned and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $50,000 cash bail, $500,000 property bond pending future court action in Afton Town Court. 34-year-old James Fletcher was also charged with 2nd degree burglary in connection with this case, the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is requested to contact State Police at 561-7400.

Police seized 11 ounces of marihuana, synthetic marihuana, $931 dollars in cash, a handgun and a digital scale. Baldwin and Odindo were arraigned & were remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $25,000 cash bail; Freid was arraigned and remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $5,000 cash bail.
Norwich City Police have identified the victim of a shooting as 19-year-old Roxanne Shipman of Norwich on Thursday. Police responded to the report of a shooting Thursday at Division Street shortly after 6:00 PM, Shipman was transported to Chenango Memorial Hospital where she died from her injuries. The Norwich Police Department and the State Police Forensic Investigation Unit are investigating; preliminary reports suggest that the shooting could have been accidental.
DELAWARE COUNTY Sheriff’s department arrested 67-year-old Charles Kwiesinski of Stony Point, for Harassment, for allegedly sending Menacing phone calls & voicemails to a Walton resident. Kwiesinski will appear in Walton town court at a later date.

Veronica Taft of Binghamton has had her murder conviction dismissed, she was convicted previously for 2nd degree murder, manslaughter, and endangering the welfare of a child, for the death of her 2 year old son Lyric in 2010. An appeals court has ruled that there was conflicting proof went against the weight of the evidence presented on the murder & manslaughter charges, the convictions for endangering the welfare of a child stand.
The state comptrollers office claims that they blocked 2,052 tax rebate checks worth $819,000 addressed to dead homeowners. Overall, the office returned nearly 32,000 checks totaling 32 million dollars to the state Department of Taxation & finance, avoiding them from going out erroneously last year.

Binghamton Police charged 27-year-old Nicholas Chappell of Binghamton with 2nd -degree murder & attempted 2nd degree murder for the fatal shooting at 1 Mozart Street Wednesday morning. Chappell is accused of fatally shooting 23-year-old David Sanborn of Whitney Point & injuring 26-year-old Jordan Doolittle of Windsor. The investigation is ongoing.
City of Oneonta Police arrested 18-year-old Noah Graetz of Owings Mills Maryland & Hartwick College for Criminal possession of a Controlled substance & Criminal possession of marihuana. Oneonta Police Department Detectives received information regarding illegal narcotics and a large amount of marihuana on the Hartwick College campus; Police seized 6 grams of cocaine, 27 ounces of marijuana, & $2,150 cash. Delaware County Public Health announced that a raccoon has tested positive for Rabies in the town of Middletown. The Raccoon was sent to the State Rabies Lab for testing, the positive test results were received Wednesday. Officials said that there was 1 domestic animal and 1 human exposure; they are coordinating the Rabies Post Exposure Prophylaxis treatment that the adult will be receiving. The animal has been placed in quarantine for 6 months due to a short lapse in rabies vaccination status. The next scheduled rabies clinic is: Delhi Fire Station on October 19th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Governor Cuomo announced that the sales and use tax exemption for feminine hygiene products sold in New York State is in effect. Feminine hygiene products have been taxable since the state sales tax was first instituted in 1965, even as a wide variety of other goods, such as dietary and family planning products, have been exempt.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 20 year Justin Mattice of Delhi early this morning on charges of felony aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, aggravated driving with a blood alcohol content of .18% or greater, felony DWI, criminal possession of a controlled substance following a civilian report of a possible domestic dispute in progress on Warner Hill Road in the Town of Meredith. Mattice was arraigned at Kortright Town Court; he was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $2,000 bail.

State Police at Sidney arrested 22-year-old Christopher Brissette of Unadilla for felony of criminal possession of stolen property. The arrest occurred after a report of the theft of power tools in July from a residential garage in the Town of Unadilla. Brissette is accused of possessing a wood splitter valued at about $2,000 in the Town of Columbus. He was issued a ticket returnable to the Town of Columbus court on August 16th.
Governor Cuomo has signed legislation designed to help incapacitated people at the end of their lives. “Peter Falk’s Law,” requires all people entitled to notice of a person’s death, funeral and burial arrangements to be identified in court orders appointing a guardian to oversee the person’s care. In some circumstances under the current law, legally-appointed guardians have failed to notify family members or close friends of the person when they become sick, are admitted to the hospital, or pass away, the new law will help ensure legal guardians will no longer be able to improperly isolate an incapacitated person at the end of their lives. The famous actor's daughter had alleged the actor’s second wife obtained conservatorship of him and blocked all contact with other family members at the end of his life.
20-year-old Kobe Hanns of Conklin was sentenced to eight months in jail in Broome County Court Wednesday. State police say Hanns fatally shot & killed his sister’s dog for urinating inside the family house. Hanns was found guilty of aggravated cruelty to animals and criminal mischief after a trial in June.
State Police at Oneonta arrested 21-year-old Akil Wright of Laurens for the felony criminal mischief and 21-year-old Shaquilla Parker of Laurens for menacing, after troopers responded to a dispute at an apartment on Main Street in Laurens. An investigation determined that after a physical dispute with her boyfriend Parker threatened him with a knife. Also, he damaged over $250 of their property. Wright and Parker were arraigned at the Town of Laurens court and were release without bail required. Their next court dates are pending.

A fundraiser will be held this Sunday in Sidney for the family of 31-year-old Shayne Charles, who was fatally injured in an explosion & house fire in Masonville July 13th. The fundraiser will be at the Moose Lodge in Sidney from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM to help pay for medical and funeral expenses and establish a trust fund for Charles daughter. Charles was severely burned when he tried to ignite a propane hot water heater at his mother’s house on State route 206, he was transported to the burn unit at Upstate Medical University Hospital in Syracuse, he died there 10 days later. . Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of a domestic dispute in Andes Monday. 21 year old Joel Maldonado of Lydenhurst, New Jersey & 21 year old Preston Reed of Andes fell through a plate glass window during the altercation, Maldonado sustained a head laceration, he was taken to O’Connor Hospital in Delhi, where he was treated and released. Deputies determined that 2 small children were in close proximity to the altercation, Maldonado was charged with 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Criminal Mischief, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $1,000 dollars cash bail, Reed was charged with 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
On Monday, July 25, 2016 Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 28-year-old John Mahler on a Parole Warrant issued by the State Division of Parole. Mahler was convicted in 2013 of committing burglaries in the Village of Walton; he was paroled in March, & was subject to Post Release Supervision until March 2019. Mahler is being held in the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending further action by the Division of Parole.

The State Labor Department released the unemployment rates for southern tier area counties today. Chenango county registered 4.5% unemployment, Delaware County had an even 5%, Otsego county registered a 4.3 % for teh Month of June. The state wide unemployment rate for June was at 4.7% for the 2nd straight month.
Governor Cuomo announced the arrests of 5 people for illegally selling synthetic marijuana at stores in Syracuse and Binghamton. State Police seized more than 100 packets of suspected synthetic marijuana, the State Health Commissioner is issuing orders to immediately close the establishments found to be selling these illegal substances. In Binghamton Troopers arrested 62-year old Vijaykumar Hathi and 64-year old Deepa Hathi, owners of Friend’s Grocery at 46 Court Street in Binghamton. Both were charged with sale of synthetic drugs, & possessing of synthetic Marijuana.

The State Senate Task Force on heroin & Opioid Addiction have issued a 4-part plan to combat the crisis in New York State. The plans call for increasing prevention efforts by trying to limit prescriptions for the legal medications from Doctors, opioid education to prescribed patients & Establishing a Narcan kit registry. The plan also calls for increased penalties for existing & new laws dealing with the sale of controlled substances. This year’s state budget commitment of $166 million for heroin and opioid crisis, treatment, outpatient, and residential services, was increased by another $25 million follow the report from the Senate task Force.
U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer introduced a bill to expand Brady background checks. Schumer introduced Brady Bill 2 after more than 2,000 advocates flooded his office Monday morning with phone calls. Senator Schumer's original Brady Bill has prevented more than 2.6 million gun sales to domestic abusers, violent felons, and people with dangerous mental illnesses; the new bill will expand background checks to all gun sales.

The State DOT will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, May 24, regarding plans to rehabilitate a bridge on State Route 28 in the town of Milford. Governor Cuomo announced the submission of 210 vetoes, eliminating pages of unnecessary language from the 2016-17 Enacted Budget. The vetoes include 18 reappropriations for items that had previously been fully paid out. 132 appropriations already received adequate funding within State agency operations, and 15 were duplicative, 27 reappropriations have been vetoed previously and therefore cannot be reappropriated, & 14 appropriations were unconstitutional.

The state learned that hundreds of faulty bolts were discovered within the reactor at the Indian Point Unit 2 Plant, the latest in a series of incidents that raise concerns about the management, maintenance and equipment standards at the plant. Governor Cuomo stated that there was no immediate danger to public health and safety, but the Governor said that he believes that the plant should NOT be re-licensed.
A federal jury on Tuesday convicted 25-year-old Antonio Ballard of Binghamton, for engaging in a sex trafficking and prostitution business involving minors. Ballard faces sentencing on July 27th.
Former New York state Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver was disbarred Tuesday by the Appellate Division of the state Supreme Court in Manhattan. Silver was convicted for abusing his power while serving as Speaker of the State Assembly from 1994 until last year. He faces sentencing in a couple of weeks.
