State Police will participate in a national distracted driving enforcement campaign as part of April’s National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The “Put the Phone Away or Pay,” will run from Today, through Monday, April 13th. Troopers will conduct targeted enforcement details focused on drivers using electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 3,200 people were killed in distraction-affected crashes in the United States in 2024. During the April 2025 “Put the Phone Away or Pay” campaign, New York State Troopers issued 22,867 tickets, including 4,607 for distracted driving violations.
The National Weather Service has confirmed that the first tornado of 2026 in New York, The storm initially passed through Gowanda, with reports of wind-driven and accumulating large hail before moving across northern Cattaraugus County on March 31, carving a 1.4-mile path and causing damage consistent with an EF-1 tornado with peak winds of 107 mph.

National Baseball Hall of Fame Chairman of the Board Jane Forbes Clark announced that a Hank Aaron statue will be unveiled at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown on May 23. The bronze representation of Aaron will be installed on the first floor of the Museum. Aaron was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1982 following a 23-year big league career with the Braves and Brewers, Aaron launched his 715th career home run 50 years ago today. Aaron’s Hall of Fame plaque made a rare appearance outside of the Hall of Fame Plaque Gallery when it traveled to Atlanta for today’s event, the plaque will also be featured at Truist Park today for fans to view at this evening’s Braves-Mets game.

A raccoon tested positive for rabies in the town of Meredith. This is the first laboratory confirmed positive case of rabies in Delaware County in 2024. A rabid raccoon entered a cow barn in the town of Meredith and attacked and bit a cow. The raccoon was sent for testing to the State Department of Health Wadsworth Laboratory. The cow that was attacked and bitten has been euthanized. There were no human exposures, and no other domestic animals were exposed to the rabid raccoon. Brian Mulder of Union Grove Distillery in Arkville, will appear on Discovery Channel’s Moonshiners: Master Distiller program. 3 distillers from across the United States compete to become Master Distiller. 11 Fire Companies responded Friday night a fire in Stamford. The buildings were on fire at 62 to 64 Main Street in Stamford, 2 historic buildings were lost, the fire displaced 30 residents and 2 businesses, 2 residents & 2 firefighters were injured, with non-life threatening injuries. The Red Cross & Churchill Gym helped displaced residents, the cause of the fire is under investigation. The Stamford Village Hall will accept donations today through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Locally, Waste Recovery Enterprises of Sidney is collecting donations of canned food & toiletries for the 11 families displaced, teh items can be dropped off at their location at Valley View Road & they will deliver them to Stamford.

State DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced $4 million in grant funding for generators of excess wholesome food and food scraps to expand their capacity to donate it to organic recycling facilities. An estimated 40% of the food produced in the United States goes uneaten while about 2.5 million New Yorkers go hungry. Seggos said that much of the wasted food is disposed of in solid waste landfills where its decomposition accounts for more than 15% of emissions of methane, which is a potent greenhouse gas. Governor Cuomo announced an extreme risk protection order law that would prevent individuals determined by a court that are likely to engage in violent conduct from purchasing, possessing, or attempting to purchase or possess any type of firearm. The legislation would make New York the first state in the nation to empower its teachers and school administrators to prevent school shootings by pursuing court intervention. No law currently exists in New York State that enables a court to issue an order to temporarily seize firearms from a person who is believed to pose a severe threat of harm to himself, herself, or others unless that person has also been accused of a crime or family offense.

James Giacalone was released Saturday from a Pennsylvania Hospital, and into the custody of the State Police Violent Felony Warrant Squad. Giacalone had previously waived extradition proceedings, was returned to New York to face multiple charges, including two counts of attempted first degree murder of a police officer, for allegedly trying to run over 2 State Troopers who were trying to arrest him on separate charges on January 2nd in Binghamton. Giacalone was arraigned in the city of Binghamton Court and was remanded to the Broome County Jail with no bail set. His next court dates are pending.

A Bobcat has tested positive for rabies in the town of Tompkins, the first animal testing positive for rabies in 2016, according to Delaware County Public Health Services. The Bobcat was sent to the State Rabies Laboratory for testing, there was no human exposure, a dog that was exposed to the rabid Bobcat was immunized against rabies, and is not in danger of contracting the disease. Delaware County Public Health announced that the next scheduled rabies clinic is at the Masonville Fire Hall on June 29th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. 34-year-old James Oliver of Mount Upton has been charged with first-degree criminal sexual act for allegedly abusing a young girl. Oliver is a level 2-sex offender, he was convicted in 2005 for sexual misconduct to a 15-year-old girl, the latest alleged victim is 7. Oliver is being held at Otsego County Jail on $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 bond.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County will be sponsoring 3 farmers’ markets for the 2013 season in Sidney, Walton and Deposit.  The Sidney Farmer’s Market will be held at the Video Entertainment parking lot, 89 Main Street from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM every Tuesday, from July 2nd to September 24th.  Walton’s market will be open on August 7th  & September 4th, at Delaware Valley Hospital, 2 dates have been chosen for markets in Deposit, August 15th and September 19th at the First United Methodist Church on 2nd Street.  More information is available at 865-6531 or ccedelaware.org.
