New Healthcare Reforms went into law on January 1st, Now expectant mothers can now enroll in health insurance penalty-free where the Coverage is retroactive to the month of pregnancy certification, Also, a new law makes health insurance cover at least 2 EpiPens per year, capping out-of-pocket costs at $100. another law states that insurance providers must eliminate all out-of-pocket costs for insulin, removing financial barriers for diabetes management.

A new state law beginning tomorrow, will make the cost of Insulin on insurance cheaper. The law eliminates co-pays for insulin covered by health insurance plans, making New York the 1st state to eliminate co-pays. The American Diabetes Association estimates that about 1.8 million adult New Yorkers have the illness, the measure is expected to save New Yorkers $14 million in 2025.

Attorney General Letitia James today secured agreements from the nation's largest insulin manufacturers to cap the price of insulin at $35 per monthly prescription for uninsured New Yorkers for 5 years. An investigation by the Office of the Attorney General found that From 2002 to 2013, the average list prices for insulin products tripled, about 10% of New Yorkers have diabetes, about 464,000 of them rely on insulin every day.

The State Department of Corrections announced that disgraced Hollywood movie producer Harvey Weinstein has been moved to the Mohawk Correctional Facility in Rome New York. Weinstein was convicted of rape in 2020, he was sentenced to 23 years in state prison, he was also found guilty of sex crimes in California & was sentenced there to 16 years in prison. New York State Correctional officials moved Weinstein to Mohawk, following a heart procedure shortly after. His lawyers have also said that he suffers from diabetes and vision issues.

In honor of Veteran's Day, the State Department of Health announced that they are working to correct disparities in services available to Veterans, after a report found 37% of veterans report at least one disability, compared to 26% of non-veterans, Veterans are more likely to report they engage in risky behaviors, including smoking, and are more likely to report diagnoses of other health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, COPD, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis than non-veterans in the same age group. Law enforcement agencies from Yates County to the Capital District are looking for 71 year old Franklin Herman of Jerusalem, who suffers from Alzheimer's Disease & Diabetes. Herman is described as a white male, 5'6" about 150 pounds, he is bald & has blues eyes & wears glasses, he is driving a blue GMC Sierra Pick up with New York License number 9093JY, he was last seen this morning in Cohoes at about 9:40 AM. Physician Assistant Alyssa MacIntosh of UHS Women’s Health Center in Norwich will hold a discussion about Breast Cancer & earl y detection in a free presentation today at Bohemian Moon, 103 W. Main Street in Norwich. Governor Cuomo announced today that $1.6 million has been awarded to 3 emergency food relief organizations in the Southern Tier through the Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program, administered by the Department of Health. Agencies receiving these awards are required to devote a portion of the funding to food identified as helpful in the prevention of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and obesity. Locally, funding was awarded to the Broome County Council of Churches, they received $100,000 & Delaware Opportunities received $149,315

Governor Cuomo is calling for cuts in state funding for $25 million from 39 public health programs that fight cancer, diabetes and other conditions. Cuomo's administration said it will be up to state health officials to decide where to make the reductions, which are intended to make public health spending more efficient. Cuomo’s $152 billion budget proposal actually increases health care spending overall.

Bassett Healthcare Network has been awarded a $297,419 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for up to four years to bring telehealth services to the school-based health care setting. The grant-funded project will benefit students enrolled in 18 of Bassett’s school-based health centers in Delaware, Otsego and Chenango counties. In addition to providing access to sub specialists, the school-based project will include diabetes care and education, obesity prevention programming and nutritional counseling, oral health care, behavioral health services, and asthma care and education. From July of 2015 through June of 2016, the program handled 33,522 visits; 32 percent of those were mental health visits, and 59 percent were medical visits; the dental component handled over 3,054 visits.

Approximately 460,000 New York Medicaid recipients diagnosed with diabetes received diabetes-related services costing more than $1.2 billion in state fiscal year 2013-14, according to a report released by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The report notes that about 1.6 million adult New Yorkers, or 10.3% of the adult population, have been diagnosed with either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, which is higher than the 3-year nationwide average of 9.6%.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation that will expand access to potentially lifesaving medication for students and school personnel in the event of an emergency. The new laws include provisions that will allow schools to administer epi-pens to students without prescriptions in emergency situations and that will allow students diagnosed with asthma, allergies and/or diabetes to self-administer prescribed medical treatments. One new law authorizes schools to possess and administer auto-injectable epinephrine, in an emergency situation, even if the recipient of such treatment does not have a prescription.
