2 local teams brought home state championships this weekend, Deposit-Hancock Baseball and Softball both won Class-D titles, it's the 4th Class-D program in state history to have their baseball and softball teams capture a state crown in the same season. The Greene Softball team finished as runners-up in the Class-C bracket. THE DEPOSIT HANCOCK BASEBALL TEAM CAPPED OFF A GREAT SEASON WITH A 9-3 WIN OVER FORT PLAIN TO WIN THE CLASS-D STATE TITLE AT SUNY BINGHAMTON. IT’S THE FIRST STATE TITLE FOR THE COMBINED PROGRAM. THE DEPOSIT SOFTBALL TEAM LOST A HEARTBREAKING 4-3 CONTEST TO FORT ANN IN THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. THE JACKS HAD WON 3 STRAIGHT TITLES BUT JUST CAME UP SHORT THIS SEASON. ON THE TRACK THE BEST LOCAL FINISHER AT THE STATE MEET WAS DELHI SENIOR LOGAN BRUCE, SHE WON THE DIVISION 2 PENTATHLON COMPETITION TO BRING HOME HER 2ND STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, she helped Delaware Academy WIN a TITLE IN BASKETBALL EARLIER THIS YEAR. THE NEW YORK STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR BASEBALL, SOFTBALL & TRACK AND FIELD ARE THIS FRIDAY & SATURDAY. SEVERAL LOCAL ATHLETES AND TEAMS WILL BE PARTICIPATING. THE DEPOSIT-HANCOCK BASEBALL TEAM WILL PLAY IN THE CLASS-D SEMIFINALS ON FRIDAY AT 5 PM IN BINGHAMTON WHILE THE DEPOSIT SOFTBALL TEAM WILL PLAY IN THE CLASS-D SEMIFINALS ON SATURDAY IN GLENS FALLS AT 1:30 PM. DEPOSIT SOFTBALL IS LOOKING FOR THEIR 4-STRAIGHT STATE TITLE WHICH WOULD TIE THE STATE RECORD FOR CONSECUTIVE CHAMPIONSHIPS. 11 LOCAL TRACK & FIELD ATHLETES WILL HEAD TO SYRACUSE TO COMPETE FOR A STATE TITLE BEGINNING ON FRIDAY. ATHLETES FROM SIDNEY, UNATEGO, DELAWARE ACADEMY, UNADILLA VALLEY, DOWNSVILLE, WORCESTER, ONEONTA & COOPERSTOWN WILL BE AT THE TRACK AND FIELD STATE MEET. State Police arrested 73-year-old Spencer Harford of Amsterdam, for 3rd degree grand larceny. Troopers investigated a report of 2 bad checks that is accused of using to purchase cattle and a trailer, valued at almost $30,000 from a deposit woman. Harford was arraigned in the Village of Deposit Court and remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or a $20,000 property bond pending future court action.

State Police arrested 19-year-old Samantha Wren of Hancock, for 2nd degree burglary & 2nd degree criminal contempt. The arrest occurred after Troopers investigated a theft of property from a residence in Hancock, police determined that Wren entered her mother’s residence without permission and stole an amount of cash, food and clothing, which also violated a valid order of protection. Wren was arraigned in the Village of Hancock Court and released without bail required.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum has announced the logos that will appear on the caps of the Hall of Fame plaques for 2015 Hall of Fame electees Craig Biggio, Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz. Biggio’s plaque will feature a Houston Astros, the only team he played for in his 20-year career. Martinez’s plaque will feature the pitcher in a Boston Red Sox cap, where he had his most successful seasons. Smoltz’s plaque will feature the pitcher in a Braves cap; he played the vast majority of his career with Atlanta.
