Governor Hochul signed an executive order establishing a statewide moratorium on the permitting and construction of large new data centers. The freeze will temporarily stop massive, facilities for up to a year while the state develops updated environmental, energy, and community standards. The ban applies to new data center facilities that require 50 Mega Watts or more of energy. however smaller data centers used by hospitals, universities, and financial back-office services are exempt.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is expanding and enhancing communication abilities with crime victims and community members with new technology that provides text updates to community members calling 911. Following a call to 911 or the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line, callers using a mobile phone will receive an automated notification & incident number by text message, with updates related to the response, about the deputy being dispatched and access to helpful resources, callers will also be able to check the status of their cases at sheriffconnect.broomecountyny.gov.

A community-wide conversation about housing insecurity & homelessness will take place in Norwich on Friday at “A Conference on Housing and Belonging, from 9:30 am. to 2 pm. in the Norwich High School Auditorium. Chenango County Social Services Commissioner Daniel Auwarter explains:

The State’s Division of Consumer Protection is warning members of the military community to be aware of scams targeting active-duty service members and veterans. The FTC reports the number of scams targeting the military community increased by 17%, costing victims $684 million in 2025, with 35,215 fraud reports filed. Service members and their families should never give personal information by phone or by clicking on links in emails to an unknown company or person. The Consumer Assistance Helpline 1-800-697-1220 is available Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, consumer complaints can be filed at Dos.ny.gov/consumerprotection.

From 3 to 7 pm. on Friday, the Swart-Wilcox House Museum on wilcox Avenue in Oneonta will be celebrating the installation of the Lawrence Swart plaque by the Oneonta chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Another Sidney Community Clean-Up will be held at Keith Clark Park on Saturday, the Starting time is set for 9:00 at the park pavilion. Volunteers will help variety of jobs throughout the walking trail areas. some tools will be available, or volunteers may bring their favorite shovels, pruners or other gardening gear. Work gloves should be worn.

The Unadilla Flag Day Parade will be held on Main Street in Unadilla, this Sunday featuring marching bands, vintage tractors, antique vehicles, and dozens of local fire departments. The Parade starts at 3:00 PM from Unatego Elementary School to the Community House.

State Police arrested 26 year old Ryan Gregory of Coram, Wednesday following a neighbor dispute that resulted in a man shot on Houghtaling Hollow Road in the Town of Meredith, Gregory allegedly shot the victim and 2 unoccupied vehicles. A 57-year-old male from Meredith sustained non-life threatening injuries and went to A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta, he was later transported to Albany Medical Center for further treatment. Troopers located Gregory at his local residence where he was in possession of firearms and refused commands to surrender, after several hours, Gregory surrendered and was charged with Attempted Murder, Criminal Use of a Firearm & Additional charges are likely. Gregory was processed then transported to the Delaware County Jail for Arraignment.

Plans are going forward to unearth a Time Capsule buried in Unadilla in 1976 and have it opened this July 4th, as part of a celebration for the 250th anniversary of America. Gloria Meenan was one of the 10 year old students involved in the 1976 plans for what went into the time capsule, she told WCDO News about the origins of the plan:

Keiko Howard is an artist and painter from Sidney Center who is painting a mural on the Liberty Street Side of 7 Stones in downtown Sidney, She told WCDO News that she was commissioned to paint the mural after completing a small 1 on the side of Sidney Flowers & Gifts:

Howard said that she is going to paint an indoor mural at the Community Cultural Center in Sidney after the completion of the current work, she is also looking to recruit other area artists to try to have painting & murals in village business district in the region.

An American Red Cross Blood Drive will be held in Sidney Saturday from 10:00AM to 2:00 PM at the Community Cultural Center at 1 Bridge Street. The State DOT invites members of the public to view and discuss project plans and construction for the South-side Oneonta Safety and Mobility Improvement Project for State routes 23 and State Route 28. The improvements include extended turning lanes, addition sidewalks, full repaving, and updated pavement markings. The open house will be today at the South-side Community Room at 5006 State Highway 23 in Oneonta, 2 sessions will be held, 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 to 6:00 PM, Construction is expected to start in June and continue through fall of 2027.

The Chenango County Department of Public Health will be visiting area towns through June 30th, to educate the community on the importance of Lead and Lead Poisoning, with their annual "LEAD WALK" that has continued since 2012. The State Department of Transportation reminds Oneonta area residents invites the public to an Open House on Tuesday May 19th to discuss project plans and construction for the Southside Oneonta Safety and Mobility Improvement Project. The project calls for improving safety, traffic flow, and pedestrian access on State Route 23 & 28, by extended turning lanes, additional sidewalks, full repaving, and updated pavement markings. Construction is expected to start in June and continue through fall of 2027. The open house will be held on Tuesday at the Southside Community Room at 5006 State Highway 23 in Oneonta, session will be from 11 am. to 1 pm. and 4 pm. to 6 pm.

Commerce Chenango has been awarded $750,000 in funding through the State Homes and Community Renewal, which will help property owners rehabilitate vacant and uninhabitable spaces and convert them into safe, quality, and affordable rental units. Otsego County Sheriff's Office responded to a dump truck rollover accident with entrapment Tuesday Morning at the intersection of County Route 11 and Burke Hill Road in the Town of Hartwick. One occupant was extricated and transported to Bassett Medical Center for further evaluation. The driver was extricated using hydraulic rescue tools and was airlifted by LifeNet to Albany Medical Center for treatment.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office and numerous local fire departments responded last Wednesday to a house fire at 803 Hill Avenue in the Town of Union. Firefighters found a fully involved fire, after extinguishing the fire, a victim was located inside the residence, deceased. The deceased victim was identified as 86 year old Joyce Bassos, There were no other occupants in the residence. The cause of the fire is under investigation, The preliminary investigation does not indicate any criminal action.

The Chenango County Historical Society is seeking a Patron Engagement Coordinator to enhance community engagement and visitor experience, with a focus on capacity-building and strategic development. Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced an expansion of child care services at 11 SUNY community colleges in New York State. The services will include evenings and weekends, designed to align with the schedules of student-parents who are enrolled in high-demand programs. SUNY Broome is one of the Colleges participating in the program.

The federal trial of Peyton Gendron of Conklin will be held in Buffalo, Judge Lawrence Vilardo made the ruling last week. Gendron's attorneys were seeking to move the trial, out of Buffalo, citing concerns over the ability to get a fair trial. Gendron shot 10 Black people shopping at a Buffalo Tops Supermarket on May 14, 2022, he has already been convicted on state charges, he faces the death penalty on Federal charges, the next trial should start this summer.

Mirabito Cares announce the launch of its March 2026 Round Up at the Register campaign, a month-long community giving initiative dedicated to improving access to pediatric healthcare for children and families across Mirabito’s service areas. From March 2 through March 31, customers at all 112 Mirabito Convenience Store locations will be invited to round up their in-store purchases to the nearest dollar. Proceeds from the campaign will benefit Friends of Bassett supporting School-Based Health Program and the Upstate Foundation supporting vital patient care, education and research at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.

The ‘Pink Patch Project’ at Broome County Sheriff’s Office presented a $3,864 donation to Traci’s Hope and the Tina Fund toward helping local families fighting cancer. The Pink Patch Project is a national campaign bringing law enforcement and the community together to raise breast cancer awareness and funding to help local families fighting cancer. In the first 3 years of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Pink Patch Project, they raised over $11,200 for local families battling cancer through contributions and sales of patches, badges, hats and other custom merchandise.

Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond was officially sworn in Monday morning following his re-election to a 3rd term as Sheriff. The oath of office was administered by Delaware County Court Judge John Hubbard during a ceremony attended by county officials, law enforcement personnel, family members, and community supporters.

State Forest Rangers & the Otsego County Sheriff's Office conducted a Wilderness Search On December 25 at 6:18 pm., the Sheriff’s Office called for assistance in the search for a patient who jumped out of an ambulance. The ambulance was transporting the 47-year-old unidentified Unadilla resident from Fox Hospital to Bassett Medical Center, Ambulance personnel pursued the patient but lost sight near Walnut and Linden Streets, they searched a wooded area, about 5 hours later, a civilian notified Rangers that someone was pounding on the front door of a house on Linden Street, a Deputy found the patient sitting at the bus stop shelter and drove the patient to the hospital.

1 of the new laws going into effect on Thursday January 1st, is an effort to crack down on money laundering and "shell company" secrecy, the New York LLC Transparency Act stipulated that liability companies (LLC's) formed in or authorized to do business in New York must now disclose their "beneficial owners", or the actual people who own or control the company, to the Department of State. Existing companies have until the end of the year to file, while any new LLC's formed on or after January 1, 2026, January 1 have to submit the information within 30 days of formation.

The Delaware County Business Alliance is now accepting applications for the 2026 Leaderful Delaware Emerging Leaders Program, designed for business and community leaders who are interested in becoming more engaged in shaping the region's future. Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced the indictment of 18 year old James Tinebra of Plainview, A Delaware County Grand Jury indicted Tinebra for Burglary & Grand Larceny for stealing a State Police Vehicle from a repair shop in Davenport on November 5th at about 3:45 AM. Tinebra was located later in the day by the Schodack Police Department in Rensselaer County, where he is also facing separate charges.

Broome County Sheriff's Office & area firefighters responded Friday to the report of a car crashing into a house in the Town of Union. Responding deputies found that the driver, an 82-year-old female, was attempting to back out of a residential driveway and mistakenly accelerated forward off the driveway and into the adjacent house, rupturing a natural gas line. NYSEG was alerted and the gas line was turned off, nearby residents were temporarily evacuated, The driver was transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center for minor injuries. No charges were filed.

22 year old Matthew Bartosik of Conklin was sentenced today to 50 years in jail for the January 3rd killing of his uncle, Michael Lewis, following a family argument. Bartosik shot his uncle several times, resulting in his death, he also shot his cousin, who survived the incident. When police arrived and tried to enter the house, Bartosik shot at the troopers and deputies. Bartosik was eventually apprehended and took a plea deal and was convicted for 2nd degree murder, 4 counts of attempted murder, 3 counts of attempted murder of a police officer, plus criminal use of a firearm, criminal possession of a weapon & 1st degree assault.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that New York State's first-ever inflation refund checks up to $400 are now being sent to 8.2 million households statewide. Mohawk Valley Gives, the annual one-day on-line fundraiser, was a big success for Otsego County Non-Profit Organizations this year, according to Executive Director Jeff Katz of the Community Foundation of Otsego County:

Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown has begun the next phase of its project to construct a childcare center on the hospital’s campus, which is expected to be completed in spring 2026. The facility will be called the Harrison House Childcare Center in honor of Dr. Francis Harrison, an internist who joined Bassett in 1928, The new facility will be at 1 Beaver Street & it will have space for 58 children, plus 15 additional spots for sick care. The center will employ around 18 staff members.

The Future for Oneonta Foundation announced a community challenge gift from Brian Wright, who has pledged to match donations—dollar for dollar—up to $125,000 to help complete the much-anticipated Wilber Park Splash Pad Project. Scrivener also said that most of the big projects that received money from the 10 million dollar Downtown Revitalization Initiative will go out to bid this fall, some of the projects have already been completed.

State Police announced that their Service Day open house scheduled for Saturday, at the State Police Academy in Albany, has been canceled due the weather forecast. No new date has been announced.

A new report identifies which States are investing most in manufactured housing as an alternative to existing homes. In New York State, 13.4% of all new single-family houses built were manufactured homes, the 13th highest share in the nation. New York State shipped 1,616 manufactured homes last year, and issued 10,453 permits for single-family site-built homes. Manufactured homes in New York State sold at an average price of $120,900, versus the median $466,085 for all single-family homes in 2024. The full report can be found at constructioncoverage.com.

UHS Delaware Valley Hospital has been awarded a $20 million grant through the State Department of Health. The Hospital recently announced plans to build a 4-story addition & the grant will support that expansion. The new building will house primary medical care services, specialty services, physical, occupational & speech therapy and a laboratory, The Medical Neighborhood Project is expected to begin shortly, with the anticipated completion by the end of 2027.

Public Meeting #1 for the Otsego Lake Watershed Protection Plan will be held Today, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. at Glimmerglass State Park in the Lakeview Pavilion, at County Road 31, Cooperstown. The public meeting will provide an overview of the planning process and the desired outcome of the Watershed Protection Plan. A community survey will be launched during the public meeting and will be available for at least one month to gather additional input from the community. The Department of State provided funding to develop a Plan that identifies water quality threats and recommends local actions to safeguard the resource. Water quality in Otsego Lake is changing because of climate change, invasive species, and harmful inputs to the lake, the plan will identify causes of the degrading water quality and define specific actions to protect the lake and watershed.

Jeremiah Raub was found guilty by a Broome County Jury today for 1 count of 2nd-degree murder and 2 counts of 1st-degree arson, in connection with a 2011 Binghamton fire that killed 17 year old Jeffrey Aissa. 6 people escaped the blaze, Aissa died inside the house. The 1st trial for Raub ended when the jury could not reach a verdict, he will be sentenced at a later date in Broome County Court.

Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 30 year old Patrick Summers of Deposit for Criminal Mischief, 3 counts of Menacing, 3 counts of Harassment and 1 count of Disorderly Conduct with Violent Behavior, Summer was arrested following an investigation into a recent weapons complaint in the Town of Windsor.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol responded Saturday to a report of a burglary on Boswell Hill Road in the Town of Union. The homeowner spotted 2 individuals with flashlights inside his house with his home security camera system and called 911. Deputies, with State Police, located the 2 suspects, they fled into a wooded area, but were apprehended. Arrested were 43 year old Matthew Ortloff of Chenango Forks, & 45 year old Jeremiah Johnson of Endicott. The pair were charged with Burglary, Conspiracy, Possession of burglar tools, criminal mischief, along with seve4ral other related charges, they were arraigned and remain in custody at the Broome County Correctional Facility.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a bomb threat Tuesday at about 1:00 PM that was made to Community Bank on State Highway 23 in the Town of Norwich. The building which included Community Bank, a Mirabito Gas Station, and Dunkin Donuts were quickly evacuated. Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and State Police responded and secured the scene, a State Police Explosives Detection Canine conducted a thorough search of the entire premises and did not locate any signs of any explosive devices, it was determined that there was no threat to the public and the businesses were back open at approximately 4:00 pm. The investigation to who made the threat is still ongoing.

State Police are warning the public after recently receiving an increasing number of complaints from victims of computer and phone scams, including a victim that reported to Investigators in Sidney that they got a pop-up alert on their computer, it appeared to be from Apple, with a phone number to dial for help. When the victim called it, the scammer told the victim that their account was linked to child pornography, that the victim’s identity was compromised and that their personal information was on the dark web, the victim was told to call another number which was allegedly from the U.S Department of Treasury, the scammers sent a “courier” to the victim’s house to pick up payment to allegedly fix the problem. Police remind people to Never share personal information with someone that you don't know.

Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, announced funding for New York State in the Fiscal Year 2026 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. The bill includes funding for $1.25 billion to sustain the HOME Investment Partnerships Program, the primary federal program builds more affordable housing; and $73 million in congressionally directed spending for affordable housing, community development, and transportation projects across New York.

Republican Congressman Mike Lawler announced he will run for reelection in his own Congressional District, and he will not seek the Republican Party Nomination in the next race for New York Governor. North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is expected to seek the Republican nomination, after her nomination as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations was pulled over concerns about Republicans’ small margin for leadership in the US House of Representatives.

State Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying 2 individuals connected to a burglary that occurred on May 27, 2025, on Colesville Road in the town of Kirkwood. The suspects were last seen operating a 2010 Honda Civic with Pennsylvania license plate MNM7338.
