46 year old Arthur Cotten of Sidney, pleaded guilty to Reckless Endangerment & resisting Arrest in Delaware County Court, he was appearing for a conference on a pending indictment, he decided to pleaded guilty to the charges, relating to an incident on July 19, 2025, in the Village of Sidney, where he attempted to light himself on fire with gasoline in a garage near a propane tank, Sidney Police Officers Royce Terry and Jenna Nordberg, managed to get the fire extinguished without any person or property being seriously harmed. Cotten will be sentenced on April 28th

31 year old Mathew Hall of Columbia, South Carolina, was sentenced in Broome County to 10 years in state prison, followed by 10 years of post-release supervision, and will be required to register as a sex offender, and a no-contact order of protection was issued for the victim. Hall was found guilty of rape after a Jury Trial in December from a sexual assault that occurred in the City of Binghamton in October 2024, where Hall engaged in sexual contact with a person who was incapable of consent due to being physically helpless.
Another former corrections officer has pleaded guilty in the case connected to the beating death of Marcy Correctional Facility inmate Robert Brooks in December of 2024. Robert Kessler entered his plea in Oneida County Court, to a gang assault charge as part of a plea bargain deal in which he testified against his former colleagues David Kingsley, Nicholas Kieffer and Mathew Galliher. Kessler is scheduled to be sentenced to 4 years in State prison on May 14th.
State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced that 7 villages were designated in fiscal stress under his office's Fiscal Stress Monitoring System for their fiscal year ending in 2025. DiNapoli's office evaluates municipalities & school district each year for fiscal stress, no villages in the Tri-County Region were on the list this year. The report can be found at osc.ny.gov.

37 year old Michael Brutvan of Binghamton, pleaded guilty to Murder in the Second Degree in Broome County Court and will serve a sentence of 17 Years to Life in a New York State Correctional Facility. On May 13, 2025, the Binghamton Police Department was dispatched to the Salvation Army located at 131 Washington Street for a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers located a male inside the establishment suffering from stab wounds to the shoulder and neck. The victim was later pronounced deceased. Sentencing is scheduled for June 22, 2026, in Broome County Court.

A new Sienna College Poll show Governor Kathy Hochul with a 49% to 30% lead over Congresswoman Elise Stefanik’s in the 2026 gubernatorial race, with 20% remaining undecided. Stefanik has a 3-to-1 lead over her Republican primary rival, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who has the support of President Trump. Hochul leads her own primary opponent, Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado, 56%-13% among Democratic respondents.
The State Department of Health continues to monitor the outbreak of the flu statewide, which is now deemed prevalent in the State. There were 23 respiratory outbreaks in hospitals and 51 respiratory outbreaks in nursing homes in the 1st week of December, a total of 302 viral respiratory pathogen outbreaks have been reported from hospitals and nursing homes. Influenza A is the predominant virus with 93% falling into that category, There were no pediatric flu deaths reported this season, there were no COVID-19-or RSV pediatric deaths reported this season.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 64 year old Wayne Howe of North Norwich for criminal mischief, after deputies responded to a domestic dispute in North Norwich. Howe was additionally charged with Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, Unlawful Imprisonment & Harassment, he was processed at the Chenango County Sheriff's Office and was arraigned & remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $1,000 cash bail. Howe is to appear in the Town of North Norwich Court at a later date.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 40 year old Damon Sobers of Oneonta for 2nd degree Assault, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Menacing and Harassment, following an investigation into a domestic dispute in the Town of Oneonta. Deputies were told that the victim had struck in the head with the butt of the gun and suffered a large laceration to the face and that Sobers may be in possession of a firearm. Sobers was later taken into custody and was transported to the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office & was being held pending arraignment.

State Police arrested 34 year old Kyle Packer of Oneonta on an arrest warrant for Burglary, Criminal Contempt, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Obstructing Governmental Administration. On June 12, Packer was involved in a domestic dispute in Edmeston where he violated an order of protection, unlawfully entered a home and struck a victim & left prior to the Trooper’s arrival. Troopers located Packer on June 24 in the town of New Berlin, where he fled on tractor into a wooded area. A Trooper observed Packer Tuesday in the town of Columbia, he was taken into custody and was processed then transported to the Otsego County Jail for Arraignment.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies conducting a traffic stop Sunday, the driver was unable to provide a valid driver’s license, K9 Dexter & Deputies located methamphetamine and illegal fireworks. Deputies identified the operator as 42 year old Ryan Fletcher of Delhi, Deputies determined that Fletcher's privileges to operate a motor vehicle were suspended. Fletcher was charged with Unlawful Possession of Fireworks, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Criminal Impersonation & Aggravated Unlicensed Operator and various traffic violations, Fletcher was released on appearance tickets for Town of Delhi court at a later date.

Norwich Police Department concluded a five-month long investigation into the sexual desecration of a deceased woman in the City of Norwich. 45 Year Old Mark Randall of Norwich was charged with Tampering with Physical Evidence & Sexual Misconduct, On May 1st, 2024, the Norwich Police Department responded to 12 Columbia Street for the unattended death of a 71-year-old female, Norwich Police Detectives, along with the State Police Forensic Investigation Unit collected evidence from the residence, they accuse Randall of performing sexual acts on the deceased woman multiple times, over a period of several hours. Randall is a Level 3 Sex Offender, he was arraigned at Norwich City Court and held on $25,000 bail to reappear at a later date.
Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 34 year old Daniel Dungey of Oxford for 2 counts of Menacing, 3 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and 1 count of Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation. Deputies and State Troopers responded to a domestic dispute in the Town of Plymouth, where a firearm was displayed. Law enforcement arrived and secured the scene. It was determined that during the physical altercation, Dungey displayed a loaded handgun and threatened the victims, in the presence of several children. Deputies and Troopers located multiple firearms inside Dungey’s vehicle on scene, he was arraigned & was released on his own recognizance & will appear in the Town of Plymouth Court at a later date.

Walmart has recalled nearly 10,000 cases of apple juice sold in stores across the U.S. that were found to contain potentially harmful levels of inorganic arsenic. The recall applies to 9,535 cases of Great Value brand apple juice sold in 25 states, including New York State, as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Florida-based manufacturer Refresco Beverages voluntarily recalled the contaminated 6-packs of 8-ounce juice bottles after discovering levels of the chemical contaminant that exceeded industry standards.

State Police responded to Otsego County Road 23 and Wing Hill Road in the town of Exeter Friday Afternoon for a two vehicle crash. A 4 door sedan was making a left turn on a sharp curve onto Wing Hill Road when the driver did not see an SUV from the opposite direction, The vehicles collided and both caught fire, A passerby with a fire extinguisher assisted in getting a family out of the sedan and another person assisted the driver of the SUV out of their vehicle. 3 LifeNet helicopters responded to the area. 3 children & the driver of the sedan; Nicole Rinaldo of Ilion were transported to various hospitals, The driver of the SUV, 52 year old Michael Salon of Herkimer, was transported by helicopter to Albany Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

State Police at Sidney arrested 61 year old Duane Gardepe of Masonville, after a domestic dispute at a residence on Axtell Road in the town of Masonville. Gardepe has been charged with 1st degree Rape, Criminal Sexual Act, Kidnapping, Sexual Abuse, Aggravated Sexual Abuse, Unlawful Imprisonment, Menacing & Criminal Mischief, An investigation revealed that Gardepe menaced and threatened a victim, prevented the victim from leaving, calling 911 and forced unwanted sexual acts. Gardepe was processed and arraigned, he was remanded to the Delaware County Jail without bail.

State Police arrested 22 year old Zachary Hoffman Kowatch, of Arkville for Reckless Endangerment as a Hate Crime, Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation. On May 9, Hoffman Kowatch was in a vehicle on Main Street in the village of Fleischmanns when he began yelling anti-semitic remarks at a teenager who was riding a bicycle, he attempted to intentionally strike the teenager and an adult with his vehicle while yelling obscenities and making anti-Semitic remarks before fleeing the scene. Hoffman Kowatch was located at his residence in Arkville and arrested, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on no bail.
Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 1.5% in April compared to the same month in 2023, according to data released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Overall, local collections totaled $1.76 billion, up $26.1 million from the same time last year. New York City's collections increased 3.9%, County and city collections in the rest of the state decreased -0.5%. 25 of 57 counties experienced year-over-year decreases.
The Butternut Valley Alliance has announced a partnership with SFCU, to take the necessary measures to open a full-service branch in Morris. This development comes after the "Save Our Bank" task force was formed, as Community Bank NA had announced plan last year to close their Morris Branch. The 2nd Robbery was at the Mirabito gas station on Old Route 17 in Windsor, Sheriff Deputies identified the suspect vehicle and potential suspect as 46 year old Clint Loomis of Kirkwood. On Friday, a 3rd Robbery occurred at a gas station in Greene, Loomis was located on Route 12 in the Town of Chenango, A Deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Loomis resisted, a Taser was deployed but Loomis drove off, Tire deflation devices were set up, Loomis damaged his tires but continued to flee, eventually leaving the vehicle on foot, he was apprehended. Loomis was wanted on a warrant, & was charged with Robbery, Obstructing governmental administration, reckless endangerment, unlawfully fleeing Police, Resisting arrest & 26 traffic violations, he was being held for arraignment.

Oneonta Fire Fighters responded to a fire Sunday morning on Columbia Street, several occupants escaped, the fire began on the 1st floor, The cause of the fire is under investigation, the house is uninhabitable.

Eldred lives on Columbia Street in the village of Oxford, he drives a 2001 green Toyota Sequoia with a license plate of JJC7999, which is also missing. Eldred is approximately 6 feet tall and weighs approximately 240 pounds. A family member contacted State Police on September 26 after not being able to get in touch with Eldred. However, the last time anyone seems to have had contact with him was approximately 2 weeks ago. Anyone with information is asked to contact New York State Police at (607)561-7400,

Cutting appeared on Monday September 25th for a conference, she admitted that on January 19, she sold fentanyl to an unidentified individual in the Village of Sidney. Cutting will be sentenced to 3 years of incarceration, and 2 years of post-release supervision.

The Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 42 year old Melissa Astalos of Sidney appeared in Delaware County Court Monday and was arraigned on a sealed indictment. The 3 Count Indictment was unsealed, Astalos is accused of selling methamphetamine in the Village of Sidney August 3, 2022, also on September 1, 2022 & for possessing methamphetamine, with the intent to sell it, on February 16, 2023, also in the Village of Sidney. After being arraigned, Astalos pleaded not guilty she was released from custody under the supervision of the Delaware County Probation Department. Each charge carries a maximum 10-year sentence is convicted..

The National Baseball Hall of Fame Parade of Legends returns to Cooperstown at 6:00 PM Saturday. The parade originates at Lake Street and Chestnut Street, proceeds down Chestnut Street toward Main Street and onto Main Street to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Broome County Court District Attorney's Office announced that 30-year-old Dominick Howe pleaded guilty to felony Criminal Mischief. In December of 2022, Howe was accused of cutting off his GPS monitor and damaging it, he was required to wear it because of a previous felony conviction for Attempted Robbery, he will be sentenced to 2 to 4 years in State prison on June 23rd in Broome County Court.

Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 39 year old Leigh Murray of Patterson pleaded guilty to DWI in Delaware County Court. Murray admitted to driving at a high rate of speed on State Route 17 in Hancock after 2 to 3 vodkas in November of last year, she will be sentenced to 6 months in jail and 5 years of post release supervision at sentencing at a later date.
Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a report of harassment occurring in the Village of Margaretville. During the course of the investigation, the complainant advised that 51-year-old Melissa Hull of Margaretville contacted her via telephone and made threats & came to her residence in a confrontational manner and made additional threats. Hull was arrested Friday, & an order of protection was also issued against Hull ordering her to stay away from the complainant. Hull was processed and released on an appearance ticket.

The State DMV announced that the annual inspection stickers will be changing. DMV officials stated that the new print-on-demand vehicle inspection certificates will be phased in, it will add enhanced security by adding vehicle-specific information directly onto the inspection sticker. Miller had been hiding from authorities in Norwich for a few weeks, he was located at a residence on Columbia Street & was taken into custody. Miller was arraigned in a Federal Courtroom in Binghamton & he will be extradited back to North Carolina shortly.

The Utica Comets confirmed Thursday that they have entered into a 10-year agreement with The New Jersey Devils to move their AHL team back to Utica, and the request was approved by the AHL Board of Governors. New York state is restoring the voting rights of 35,000 parolees under an executive order from Governor Cuomo. The governor issued the directive on Wednesday, adding New York to a list of 14 states and the District of Columbia that allow people to vote once they have served their sentence.

Norwich City Police & Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies executed a 'No Knock' search warrant Thursday, police arrested 26 year old Todd Diamond & 24 year old Brittany Dunagan of Norwich for Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Nuisance & Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Both are accused of selling methamphetamines, and that there was a child present when drug sales occurred. McKenzie Wilson is a White female, is about 12 years old, with straight, blonde hair and blue eyes, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs about 100 pounds. The suspect Monette is a White male, approximately 18 years old with short, black hair and brown eyes, approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs about 140 pounds, Harvey is a White male, approximately 16 years old with brown hair. Chenango County Officials announced that sometime this afternoon, State Highway 12 south of Sherburne will be closed for up to one hour. This closure will be related to the movement of an oversized/overweight load, and the need to reinforce a bridge for weight distribution just south of the village. State Police arrested 32-year-old Curtis Commesso of Bainbridge for reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal contempt, after troopers were advised of a domestic dispute on I-88 in the Town of Fenton. Commesso allegedly drove recklessly by another vehicle that was occupied by his ex-girlfriend, their young child and others, he swerved in front of the victim’s vehicle, and the behavior violated a court order of protection. A New York state environmental conservation officer was hospitalized after being shot while investigating illegal hunting in Columbia County. Fire fighters from several area departments responded this morning to a structure fire on Main Street in Delhi. The fire began at about 6:30 this morning in the kitchen of Village Pizzeria at 106 Main Street, it eventually spread to an adjacent antiques store. The Delaware county emergency services department announced that Delaware County sent 5 crews to Ulster County this morning. Bloomville, Delhi (2 crews), Sidney and Walton.
