A Delaware County Grand Jury returned a 9-count indictment against 24 year old Donovan Connelly of Walton, for 6 counts of Sexual Abuse, for the alleged sexual abuse of a 17 year female co-worker while working in a position of authority. Other counts charge Connelly with Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, 2 counts of Stalking. Connelly was issued a criminal order of protection, which he violated, which led to a charge of Criminal Contempt. The investigation is continuing, anyone with additional information should contact the Walton Police Department at 607-865-5400.
The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration announced an Airport Improvement Grant for the Eaton Airport in Norwich. The grant was for just over $1 Million Dollars and will be used to re-seal & resurface the runway, the grant money will fund about 95% of the project.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating 38 year old Jennifer Hewitt, who is wanted on a Bench Warrant issued by the Town of Davenport Court, Hewitt was indicted by a Delaware County Grand Jury on charges of 3rd-degree Grand Larceny recently, following an investigation into a fraud complaint where Hewitt unlawfully issued bad checks totaling more than $14,000 and withdrew the funds without having sufficient balances in her accounts. Anyone with information pertaining to Hewitt's location should call the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office at (607)832-5555 or “Submit a Tip” at their Sheriff’s APP.

State Police arrested 3 people following a traffic stop in Broome County. Troopers were patrolling Johnson City & observed a vehicle commit Traffic Law violations. Troopers conducted a traffic stop on Prospect Street in the town of Dickinson. The operator was identified as 51 year old Gregory Jackson of Brooklyn. The passengers were 60 year old Sircurtis King of Binghamton & 38 year old Jhenna Wood of Binghamton. Troopers with the assistance of a State Police K9, located cocaine, fentanyl, a digital scale, packaging materials and a large amount of cash. Jackson, King and Wood were each charged with 4 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, 2 counts of Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia and all 3 were processed and were transported to the Broome County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.
The City of Oneonta announced that a contractor working for Firstlight Fiber will be installing new underground fiber cable on Ford Avenue between the intersection of Main St. and the Community Bank driveway entrance, starting at 7:00 AM until the Work is completed. The road will be closed to one lane of traffic with flaggers and temporary no parking will be implemented for both sides of the roadway throughout construction. The State DOT advises motorists that the I-88 westbound Exit 20 on-ramp will be closed from Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 31, weather permitting, to accommodate for resurfacing work. The closure is part of an ongoing project to resurface I-88 between the Otsego County line and Exit 20. The project includes the installation of new guide-rail, The interstate will remain open and is currently restricted to one lane of travel in each direction, the ramp must be fully closed during this phase of work and motorists should follow the posted detour.
37 year old Rondell Dowdell of Endicott, pleaded guilty this morning in Broome County Court, to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. On July 17, 2025, Dowdell was stopped in Vestal while operating an electric bicycle in violation State Traffic Laws, a Vestal Police Department canine alerted to the presence of narcotics. A search recovered approximately 20 grams of methamphetamine, a digital scale, packaging material, and cash from suspected drug sales. Dowdell is scheduled for sentencing on October 14th, he faces 3 years in State Prison and 3 Years of post release supervision.

Layton is accused of firing a semi-automatic rifle in the direction of an occupied residence with a family of 3 inside, resulting in a rifle round impacting through the residence, he was located, arrested, processed, and turned over to Otsego County Corrections pending Centralized Arraignment

Norwich Police Department executed a search warrant at 41 Cortland Street following an investigation into the sale and distribution of illegal narcotics. 39 year old Shawn Utter of Norwich, & 24 year old Brittany Cox were charged with several Counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Nuisance & Conspiracy, Officers seized cash from suspected drug sales, drug measuring equipment, methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, marijuana, various pills, & weapons, The Village of Sidney Police Department assisted on scene with their drug detecting K9 unit, Utter was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail pending further proceedings. Cox was processed and arraigned in Norwich City Court, where she was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail.
The FBI & the Johnson City Police Department arrested 69 year old Robert Randesi of Johnson City on federal drug & weapons charges after the execution of search warrant at a warehouse style building in Johnson City. Officers located over 20 pounds of suspected methamphetamine, quantities of marijuana, approximately $24,000 in cash, several firearms including AR-15 style rifles, ghost guns, firearm parts and ammunition, plus machinist tools and metal fabricating equipment consistent with tools used to construct or mill firearms & their parts. Randesi is currently in the Broome County Jail, He faces court action for both state and federal charges.
The State DOT announced the start of the $7 million Southside Oneonta Safety and Mobility Improvement Project, which will reduce traffic congestion and enhance pedestrian access along the State Route 23 and State Route 28 corridor. The project includes extended turning lanes, a new sidewalk and an additional pedestrian crosswalk, ADA-compliant curb ramps, plus 2 new bus stops for Oneonta Public Transit users, construction will be continuing through the fall of 2027.

State Police arrested 41 year old Donatello Lazarati of Baldwinsville for Grand Larceny, after an investigation revealed that Lazarati was working with the Assigned Counsel Program in Chenango County, Lazarati submitted duplicate billing to Chenango County for the same legal services and accepted payment. Chenango County sustained a financial loss of approximately $4,700. Lazarati was arrested was arrested, and was turned over to members of Troop C, he was processed & then transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.

Broome County 911 Center received multiple reports of a fire at the Knights Inn, at 2603 East Main Street in Endwell, at about 6:00 AM today, a total of 6 fatalities have been confirmed. Additional information, including the identities of the victims, will be released at a later time, 2 others were taken to Wilson Medical Center. over 70 residents have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. A temporary shelter has been set up at the Vestal United Methodist Church. Endwell Fire Department arrived to find heavy black smoke in the front of the building and flames showing from the rear of the building. The fire spread rapidly, and multiple Fire Departments, ambulance crews and police agencies arrived on scene to assist. The New York State Office of Fire, the Broome County Office of Emergency Services, Broome County Mobile Crisis Response Team is on scene, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Sidney Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire with smoke and flames visible Friday night at about 7:00 PM at 826 Circle Drive, heavy smoke was showing from the ridge of the roof. Sidney firefighters launched an aggressive interior and exterior attack and contained the fire to one apartment. Assistance was provided by Masonville, Unadilla, Sidney Center, Oneonta, Guilford & Harpursville fire departments, no injuries were reported, Sidney was back in service at about 8:30PM.
The National Weather Service announced that their survey teams confirmed 2 tornadoes Thursday, an EF-1 just south of Rock Stream in Yates County & an EF-0 near Cortland, other locations were surveyed in Cortland County, though it was determined that strong winds were the cause of damage east of where the tornado lifted.

NYSEG reported a high of over 14,400 customers without power across the western Counties of the state, following strong thunderstorms earlier today, crews have been working to restore power as soon as possible, much of the area was also under a Tornado watch, which expired at 3:00 PM, only about 250 NYSEG customers lost power in the Tri-County region.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office updated the public on the recent Salmonella outbreak at the jail, with 12 hospitalized over hundreds sickened, Broome County Health Department Director Olivia Catalano spoke at this afternoon's press conference:

State Police arrested 27 year old Jon Hertzog of Port Crane for DWI following a 2 vehicle crash on Interstate 88 Tuesday in the town of Chenango. An investigation determined that the vehicles crashed while entering a 1 lane only construction zone, Troopers administered Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which indicated impairment, Hertzog was arrested, his B.A.C was .14%, he was processed and issued appearance tickets to the Chenango Town Court on July 28.

41 year old Alex Scrivani of Claryville pleaded guilty to Criminal Mischief in Delaware County Court On May 11, a deputy was flagged down by multiple individuals reporting a male that was pulling on door handles of multiple residences and going into a local business, the Deputy located Scrivani, who was uncooperative, it was determined that Scrivani went into a building and damaged a screen door, he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending sentencing on June 30th.

State Police arrested 26 year old Ryan Gregory of Coram, Wednesday following a neighbor dispute that resulted in a man shot on Houghtaling Hollow Road in the Town of Meredith, Gregory allegedly shot the victim and 2 unoccupied vehicles. A 57-year-old male from Meredith sustained non-life threatening injuries and went to A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta, he was later transported to Albany Medical Center for further treatment. Troopers located Gregory at his local residence where he was in possession of firearms and refused commands to surrender, after several hours, Gregory surrendered and was charged with Attempted Murder, Criminal Use of a Firearm & Additional charges are likely. Gregory was processed then transported to the Delaware County Jail for Arraignment.

A Troy New York man wanted as a suspect in a shooting investigation was apprehended by the Broome County Sheriff’s Strategic Response Group and taken into custody within 5 minutes of his vehicle triggering a license plate reader in the City of Binghamton. On Wednesday, local law enforcement received an Attempt to Locate bulletin from the Watervliet Police Department regarding a possibly armed male suspect and vehicle wanted in relation to a shooting investigation in Watervliet. The vehicle was located in Binghamton, a traffic stop was conducted at a fast food drive through lane the unidentified suspect was taken into custody, members of the Watervliet Police took custody of the suspect and he was returned to answer for his charges.
Attorney General Letitia James today announced that 74 year old Miles Marshall of Hamilton was sentenced to 4 to 12 years in prison for operating a Ponzi scheme that fraudulently stole more than $50 million from 988 investors in Madison County and other nearby counties. Marshall convinced unsuspecting clients to invest millions of dollars into his so-called "Eight Percent Fund," claiming that their funds would be primarily used for real estate investments, Instead, Marshall used the funds to pay investment returns to prior investors, cover the expenses of his other businesses, and to fund shopping trips, vacations, and restaurant visits. Marshall's scheme lasted three decades, and in April, he pleaded guilty as a result of investigation.

Smith announced that Trimbell pleaded guilty to 2 counts of 1st degree rape, resulting in expected prison terms of 13 years followed by 20 years for Supervised release for each count and he will have to register as a sex offender, Trimbell also pleaded guilty to Forcible Touching, which will result in a 1 year prison term, the jail terms are expected to run concurrently:

After pleading guilty, sentencing was adjourned until August 25, 2026. The defendant was remanded into federal custody because he still faces charges alleging that he coerced or persuaded a child to produce sexually explicit content. Those charges remain open and are being handled by the United State Attorney’s Office.

After pleading guilty, sentencing was adjourned until August 25, 2026. The defendant was remanded into federal custody because he still faces charges alleging that he coerced or persuaded a child to produce sexually explicit content. Those charges remain open and are being handled by the United State Attorney’s Office.
New York Attorney General Letitia James joined a coalition of 36 other attorneys general and the U.S. Department of Justice in securing $36.5 million from CVS Pharmacy, for fraudulently over-billing Medicaid for insulin prescriptions. From 2010 to 2020, CVS knowingly dispensed more insulin to customers than they needed while maintaining that they were reporting the correct amount of insulin in their prescriptions. The fraudulent claims allowed the company to rake in millions in extra reimbursements from Medicaid for insulin distribution. CVS will pay more than $25 million to state Medicaid programs across the country, including $2.25 million to New York.
Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 year old Justin Cole of Bainbridge for Reckless Endangerment and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, following an investigation into a complaint received on May 31, regarding a firearm allegedly being brandished during an altercation in a parking lot adjacent in the Village of Sherburne. A preliminary investigation revealed allegations that a firearm and a knife had been brandished by two separate individuals during the incident. No individuals present at the scene wished to pursue charges, deputies obtained photographs depicting a firearm being brandished in the presence of bystanders, including children. Cole was issued an appearance ticket to appear in the Village of Sherburne Court at a later date.

Squires allegedly violated an order of protection issued by the Chenango County Family Court. Unadilla Fire Department responded Monday afternoon at approximately 3:14 PM, to a 2 vehicle accident involving a school bus. Fire Department units & an ambulance responded to the scene, it was determined that the incident was minor in nature, every student on the bus was evaluated by EMS personnel. no injuries were reported.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 28 year old Makayla Specht of Delhi on charges of unlawfully dealing with a child. Investigators followed up a complaint of an adult providing alcoholic beverages to a child, Specht allegedly provided alcoholic beverages to a minor in the Town of Kortright on December 25th, she was released on an appearance ticket for Town of Kortright Court at a later date.
43 year old Jason Sweeney of Friendsville Pennsylvania was arrested June 3rd, after Officers observed him peel out & speed in Endicott. Sweeney was stopped, he admitted to consuming alcohol and Deputies observed a handgun & a box of ammunition in the vehicle, Sweeney was charged with Felony DWI, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, he was processed and arraigned and was remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility.

After 11 days, operations at Broome County Correctional Facility have largely returned to normal, Over 120 IV hydration treatments were conducted, 10 individuals were hospitalized, 8 have returned from the hospital, with 2 still receiving treatment. Broome County Health Department showed a positive result for Salmonella in sample of a chicken salad meal served on May 24th, no other meals have tested positive. The Health Department identified multiple violations related to food preparation and storage that could have led to the outbreak. Several of the violations identified are repeat violations that have previously been cited to the food vendor, particularly those involving the cooling of food, The Health Department found no issues with water quality at the Correctional Facility.

Delaware County sheriff's Office arrested 33 year old Logan Coss of Grand Gorge for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, Driving While Intoxicated and Obstructing Firefighter Operations. On May 25th, Deputies responded to assist the Grand Gorge Fire Department and Town of Roxbury Constable at the scene of a vehicle fire, Coss is accused of attempting to obstruct fire fighters and police who were on scene. Coss was released on appearance tickets for Town of Roxbury Court at a later date.

All laundry and linens have been thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. Today, regular schedules resumed, visitation hours return on Monday morning.

Investigators were notified by corrections staff that they had intercepted a letter hidden in a bible which detailed the receipt of contraband by mail to an inmate, they obtained a search warrant for Gutierrez-Champen’s mail, a page had been saturated with a controlled substance later identified as a synthetic cannabis known as “K2.” On Wednesday, deputies located Alexander Gutierrez in the Town of Otego and took him in to custody, he was processed and released. On Thursday deputies responded to the Lakeview Correctional Facility in Chautauqua County and took Jordan Gutierrez-Champen in to custody, he was transported to the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office where he was held for Arraignment.

On Monday, several incarcerated individuals reported symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and headaches to medical staff at Correctional Facility. Over the next 24 hours, over 140 incarcerated individuals in multiple housing units were seen by medical staff for similar symptoms. The Norovirus is a highly contagious stomach illness effecting 19 to 21 million people in the United States each year and the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis in the country, The Correctional Facility is also taking additional precautions to limit exposure for staff and other incarcerated individuals within the facility, while performing deep and steady cleaning on any exposed surfaces or areas within the facility.

The 4 juveniles were previously charged with Attempted Murder in the 2nd degree, the charges have been amended to 2nd degree Murder, they are housed at a juvenile detention facility and are scheduled to appear in Broome County Court at a later date to be arraigned on the new charge. Additionally, the 13-year-old suspect was located and arrested at an address in Whitney Point, and has also been charged with 2nd degree Murder and was also sent to a juvenile detention facility in Syracuse, New York. 33 year old Stephen Pudiak of Port Crane was sentenced in Broome County Court to 14 years in State Prison followed by 13 years of Post-Release Supervision for his conviction on 1st Degree Rape, An additional concurrent sentence of 7 years in State Prison and 10 years of Post-Release Supervision was imposed for his conviction on Sexual Abuse, Pudiak will also have to register as a sex offender. Pudiak was convicted on February 6, after a jury trial on the Rape in the First Degree and Sexual Abuse in the First Degree charges. The convictions stem from an incident in which Pudiak engaged in non-consensual sexual acts upon a physically helpless victim. Pudiak was previously convicted and sentenced in April 2024, on the Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree charge, stemming from a separate incident in which he held a firearm to the victim's head.
State Police arrested 42 year old Dale Chapman of Endicott for multiple drug related offenses after a Trooper observed Chapman conduct a narcotics sale Sunday. Chapman was charged multiple counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, plus Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Sale of Controlled Substance plus several related charges, Police seized cocaine, Crack Cocaine Psychedelic Mushrooms, plus packaging material, scales, & cash from suspected drug sales, Chapman was processed then turned over to the Broome County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 55 year old Donald Lane for Resisting Arrest, Obstructing Governmental Administration, Bail Jumping as well as on 2 Warrants, Lane was located by a Deputy in Oneonta, he had failed to appear in court for sentencing on previous felony charges, he failed to comply with verbal commands and attempted to flee on foot, he was apprehended & physically resisted arrest. Lane was then turned over to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await arraignment, he was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional facility without bail.
Norwich City Police arrested 21 year old Brayden Pollock of Plymouth along with a Juvenile, in connection to the damage at Angelino Fields on Borden Avenue on May 2nd. Norwich Police determine that both individuals came in separate vehicles & damaged property, amounting to about $2,500 in damages. Both were charged with Criminal Mischief, Pollock was issued an appearance ticket for Norwich City Court, the juvenile was ordered to return to Youth Court at a later date.

48 year old Jason Gray of Bainbridge, pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance for possessing Fentanyl with intent to sell. Gray also pleaded guilty to Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, in Delaware County Court Tuesday. Gray admitted that he was found with Fentanyl during a traffic stop on West Main Street in the Village of Sidney on January 22nd & he was impaired by methamphetamine while driving, Gray will be sentenced to 5 years in state prison and 2 years of post-release supervision & his drivers license will also be revoked.

A collaborative operation between The US Attorney's Office, the Broome County District Attorney's Office, the FBI & the Broome County Sheriff's Office led to the seizure of hundreds of pounds of illicit drugs and 20 firearms over the past year in Broome County. Operation Clean Sweep led to the seizure of 475 grams of fentanyl, 63 pounds of methamphetamine, 2.3 kilograms of liquid methadone, 350 grams of crack cocaine, 1.6 kilograms of cocaine, 2.6 pounds of psychedelic mushrooms, and 400 pounds of marijuana and THC products. It also led to the seizure of 20 firearms that were illegally possessed.

The Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 39 year old Luman Craver of Guilford last week in connection with the theft of an electrical transformer from a job site on State Highway 8. Craver was charged with grand larceny, criminal mischief and conspiracy, after the Sheriff’s Office received a complaint April 22nd that a transformer had been stolen from a job site where it had been delivered and was awaiting installation. Craver is accused of removing the transformer from the site, in an attempt to sell it as scrap metal. Craver was taken into custody without incident and arraigned & He was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility and is scheduled to appear in Town of Guilford Court at a later date.
The Next Chenango County free Rabies clinic will be held today at the Columbus Highway Department on State Highway 80. The clinic for dogs cats & ferrets will be from 5:30 to 6:30 PM, pre-registration is requested at health,ny.gov/go2clinic.
Flights will be returning to the Greater Binghamton Airport from Delta Airlines starting Thursday. Delta Air Lines will first have flights between Binghamton and Detroit, officials are working to return more flights to the airport, more information will be available at the Delta Airlines website.

A Broome County jury found 29 year old Keanu Downey of Binghamton, guilty of 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and 1 count of Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, following a jury trial. Downey was arrested & was found to have Cocaine with the intent to sell, Downey was taken into custody on an active warrant. Sentencing is scheduled for July 30th, he faces up to 12 years in State Prison.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Corrections Investigation Unit recovered Fentanyl, Heroin and Marijuana from 29 year old Jean Benitez-Melendez of Syracuse at the Broome County Correctional Facility. Benitez-Melendez was charged with several Counts of Promoting Prison Contraband, Tampering with Physical Evidence, 2 Counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Obstruction of Governmental Administration, he was processed and arraigned & returned to the Broome County Jail.
Former Mid-State Corrections Officer Caleb Blair accepted a plea deal for 1st Degree Manslaughter in Oneida County Court Monday for 11 years in Jail, rather than go to trial on a host of charges in connection with the death of inmate Messiah Nantwi. Blair acknowledged in Court that it was his boot print on Nantwi's forehead.

The Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 38 year-old Zachary Lindow of Greene following an investigation into 2 separate incidents. Deputies responded Sunday to a reported domestic dispute in Greene, where Lindow allegedly subjected the victim to unwanted sexual contact and threats, he fled before deputies arrived, An arrest warrant was issued. On Monday deputies responded to a harassment complaint in Greene, also involving Lindow, he was located by the Broome County Sheriff's Office and he was turned over to the Chenango County Sheriff's Office and was charged with 2 counts of Aggravated Harassment, plus Sexual Abuse, 2 counts of Intimidating a Victim or Witness, he was was arraigned and released on his own recognizance. He will appear in court at a later date.

18 year old Kyle Whitmarsh of Dickinson is facing multiple charges following a motor vehicle theft in the Town of Fenton Monday. Broome County Sheriff’s Office Deputies observed a vehicle speeding out of the Red Apple parking lot, followed by another individual riding a minibike. Patrols located the minibike driver, who advised the deputies that his friend had stolen the car and driven to a nearby park, the owner of the vehicle also reported his vehicle was stolen. Whitmarsh was charged with Grand Larceny, Criminal Mischief, & Obstructing Governmental Administration, & face court action shortly.
Governor Hochul announced action to protect survivors of domestic violence, by selecting 5 counties including Delaware county to participate in a 2-year Coordinated Community Response Pilot Program. The effort will be led by the State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, the initiative aims to help survivors access safety and support faster while ensuring accountability for offenders.

Broome County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 2 people in 2 separate motorcycle pursuits. On April 23, Broome County Sheriff’s Officers observed a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed in Binghamton, Deputies attempted a traffic stop, but the motorcycle operator led them on a chase throughout the area, eventually crashing on Pierce Creek Rd. 56 year old Donald Stocks of Johnson City was charged with Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Obstructing Governmental Administration, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle and 10 additional traffic violations. In the 2nd Incident, on April 24th, Deputies observed a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed in Binghamton, the operator failed to comply and fled into Kirkwood, Patrols terminated the pursuit, but a short time later, they found the bike disabled, 23 year old Osciano Swartz of Binghamton was taken into custody without further incident, he was charged with Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer, Reckless Endangerment, Obstructing Governmental Administration & 16 various traffic violations. Both men face court action shortly.

State Police arrested 46 year old James Lewis of Binghamton after a dispute that resulted in another man sustaining serious injuries. Lewis has been charged with 1st Degree Robbery & Assault, On Friday afternoon, Troopers were dispatched to Endicott for a report of a male who had been struck multiple times by a baseball bat following a dispute. The 48 year old unidentified victim was taken to Wilson Medical Center, where he underwent surgery & was listed in stable condition. An investigation determined that Lewis and the victim had previously traded e-bikes, with the victim expected to pay Lewis, when he failed to provide payment, Lewis struck him multiple times with a baseball bat then left the area with the e-bike. Troopers located Lewis Saturday, was taken into custody without incident, and the e-bike was recovered. Lewis was processed & was turned over to the Broome County Jail for Arraignment.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office and numerous local fire departments responded last Wednesday to a house fire at 803 Hill Avenue in the Town of Union. Firefighters found a fully involved fire, after extinguishing the fire, a victim was located inside the residence, deceased. The deceased victim was identified as 86 year old Joyce Bassos, There were no other occupants in the residence. The cause of the fire is under investigation, The preliminary investigation does not indicate any criminal action.
The Deposit Village Board has decided to discontinue their contract with the Broome County Sheriff's Office to have a dedicate law enforcement presence in Deposit. The move comes about 6 years after the dissolution of the Deposit Police Department. Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar released a statement saying the\at the decision will make emergency response times in the Village unpredictable, they will respond to emergencies along with the New York State Police going forward.

The driver, 29 year old Philip Briggs of Deposit told deputies that he had picked up the passenger, 37 year old Emily Cecere of Binghamton, who claimed to have been staying at the residence, The owner confirmed that no one was authorized to stay there. Briggs was found to have a burglary tool in his possession and Cecere was found to be in possession of a credit card belonging to a deceased individual who lived at the residence. Briggs was charged with Burglary, Possession of Burglar Tools and Conspiracy, Cecere was charged with Burglary and Conspiracy, they will face court action shortly.

During Earth Week, The State DEC announced a total of 23 municipalities certified under New York State’s Climate Smart Communities Certification program. The certifications recognize that these communities have taken actions to reduce flood risk, address extreme heat, invest in clean energy, improve infrastructure, reduce air pollution, and increase resilience across the state. Governor Hochuls's Office announced that $237.7 Million Dollars was returned to New Yorkers in 2025. The Department of Financial Services Returned $134 million to Consumers and Health Care Providers, the Public Service Commission Helped Over 75,000 New Yorkers with Complaints in 2025, Collecting Nearly $66 Million for Consumers, the Department of Labor Recovered More Than $35 Million in Wage Theft and Collected $2.2 Million in Penalties. Also, the Division of Consumer Protection Helped Over 27,000 New Yorkers, collecting Nearly $2.7 Million for Consumers, New Yorkers Can File a Complaint at dfs.ny.gov/complaint.
The Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond reported to the Board of Supervisors meeting this week, that the road patrol division responded to 18,518 total calls for service in 2025, arrests were up 6.2% last year from 2024, traffic tickets increased by 5.4% and motor vehicle accidents saw an increase of 37.66%. The office's Criminal Investigations Division investigated 740 cases last year, including 69 where warrants were requested, making 64 arrests. The corrections division saw a 28% reduction in the number of inmates processed into the jail in 2025.

A Chenango County Grand Jury has indicted 2 people recently, Kimberly Hart was indicted on for disseminating indecent material to a minor, promoting a sexual performance by a child, sexual abuse & endangering the welfare of a child, Hart is accused of using electronic communications involving a 16-year-old, produced nude images of the minor, subjected the minor to sexual contact, and acted in a manner injurious to the child’s welfare. In a separate case, Ryan Barnhart was indicted for criminal possession of a controlled substance, Barnhart is accused of possessing fentanyl with intent to sell and possession of methamphetamine in Norwich, both will appear in Chenango County Court for arraignments shortly.

30 Year Old Joseph Hahn of Walton pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Methamphetamine with the intent to sell and he was sentenced to 4 years in state prison to be followed by 2 years of post-release supervision. On January 27, Delaware County Sheriff Deputies initiated a traffic stop in Walton they discovered that Hahn had a revoked license, a search of the vehicle uncovered multiple baggies of methamphetamine, scales, funnels, packaging material and other paraphernalia associated with the sale of illegal narcotics. The case was presented to a Grand Jury & Hahn was indicted, he pleaded guilty on Monday in Delaware County Court, he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to begin serving his sentence.

The indictment alleges that on September 17, 2025, in the City of Norwich, Madsen possessed about 2 ounces of methamphetamine with intent to sell, along with a scale, baggies and cash. He was also charged with possessing a switchblade knife and allegedly fleeing Norwich police on a motorcycle while speeding, passing vehicles and disobeying traffic signals. Madsen faces court action on the indictment shortly.

State Police arrested 22 year old Kevin Wright of Binghamton and an 18 year old unidentified female from Smithville Flats for theft of a firearm, ammunition and blank checks stolen from a residence in Chenango County. Wright was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Grand Larceny & Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, the female was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 27 counts of Forgery, 5 counts of Possession of Forged Instrument, Grand Larceny and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. In February, Troopers responded to Smithville Flats after fraudulent charges were made using a victim’s account, the victim discovered a check book, a revolver and ammunition were missing, 27 checks were fraudulently signed and transactions were made using a credit card, for just under $14,000. The 2 were found in Binghamton, Wright was wanted on an active arrest warrant, the 18-year-old female possessed 5 forged checks from the victim, the loaded revolver was in the vehicle, both were being held at the Broome County Jail pending court action.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 54 year old Shelley Wilkerson of Worcester for Overdriving, torturing and injuring animals and failure to provide sustenance following an investigation into a report of an elderly Great Dane that was dying or deceased at Wilkerson's residence. Deputies found the Great Dane was located outside, the Investigation revealed that Wilkerson allegedly failed to provide proper veterinary care to the dog, which resulted in the dog's death. Wilkerson was arrested and was issued an Appearance Ticket to Town of Worcester Court at a later date.

Greater Opportunities of Broome and Chenango County, recently won the bid from the Norwich School District to purchase Flanagan Field on Plymouth Street in Norwich, they plan to build a $9 million multi-unit apartment project for low-income housing at the site. Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 36 year old Samantha Kilts & 44 year old Kristopher Kovacks, of Smyrna, for Trespass, Criminal Mischief, and Petit Larceny after an investigation into a trespass complaint. It is alleged that Kovack and Kilts unlawfully went on the property of the victim, stole, and damaged items. Kovack and Kilts were arrested and released on appearance tickets to appear in the Town of Sherburne Court at a later date.

22 year old Shawn Lynch of Binghamton, pleaded guilty today to 1st Degree Assault & and will serve 9 years in a State Prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision. This conviction stems from a shooting on April 13, 2025, in Binghamton. Binghamton Police responded to a report of shots fired and learned that the victim had been transported to Wilson Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and survived. Police determined that the victim had been following his ex-girlfriend in a vehicle when the 2 became involved in an argument, Lynch was in a nearby driveway & fired multiple shots at the victim, striking him in the arm and chest. Sentencing for Lynch is scheduled for June 24th in Broome County Court.
Law Enforcement agencies are warning residents about potential scams involving callers posing as DIRECTV employees. The callers tell victims that their service will be terminated and that they need to call back to continue their discounts. Hartwick College will conduct an emergency response training exercise today, beginning in the late morning and continuing through early afternoon. Emergency vehicles and first responders from local agencies, including the Oneonta Police Department, Oneonta Fire Department, New York State Electric and Gas, Hartwick College campus safety personnel and SUNY Oneonta's volunteer EMS squad, will participate in the coordinated training effort. Upon arrival, officers determined that a commercial Box Truck traveling southbound on State Route 8, was involved in a head-on collision with 2 vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. 1 driver sustained injuries and was transported by Lifenet to Upstate Medical University Hospital for treatment. The other two drivers were treated at Tri-Town Regional Hospital and subsequently released. 51 year old Timothy Hoose of Berkshire, was sentenced today in Broome County Court following his conviction for Grand Larceny after a Jury Trial. Hoose was sentenced to a term of 2 to 6 years in New York State Prison, also the Court entered a Civil Judgment in favor of the victim. Hoose operated a business known as H&H Contracting, he entered into a construction contract with the victim to build a garage on the victim’s property, the victim paid a $15,000 down payment, Hoose illegally converted over $3,000 of those funds for other purposes unrelated to the project. Hoose further failed to provide the victim with an accounting and disposition of the trust funds despite a written request, as required by Law.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 40 year old Christopher Ashton of Otego for Sex Offender Failure to Notify Change of Address. The investigation revealed that Ashton, who is a level 1 sex offender, did not report a change of address to the State Sex Offender Registry within 10 days, he was arrested, processed and was released on an Appearance Ticket to the Town of Middlefield Court at a later date, he was being held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility on a parole warrant.

A new report by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli details how small businesses generate nearly $1 trillion in sales and revenues with more than 3.7 million employees at over 422,000 establishments in 2023,comprising 98.9% of all businesses in the state. On Sunday, Deputies responded to the Hillside Inn & Suites in the Town of Dickinson. Harris was arraigned & was remanded to the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility. A Delaware County Grand Jury returned a 4 Count Indictment against 36 year old William Weil of Bainbridge last week. Weil was indicted for Aggravated DWI, Felony DWI & Endangering the welfare of a child, for allegedly driving intoxicated with a child in his vehicle in Delhi on January 22nd, the DWI is a felony as Weil was convicted of DWI within the last 10 years. Weil faces action on the indictments shortly.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 35 year old Warren McKee of Milford for Dissemination of Indecent Material to Minors, following an investigation in to a report of a suspect engaging in sexual online communications with a subject he believed to be a juvenile. Investigation revealed that McKee utilized text messaging and instant messaging from a social media platform to solicit sex from the juvenile. McKee was located at his residence and taken in to custody without incident, he was processed and issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Milford Court at a later date.
Thousands of unlawful vape and marijuana products were seized from a Conklin gas station as part of a compliance check by the Broome County Health Department. On March 9, members of the Sheriff’s Office and the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force assisted the Broome County Health Department with a flavored nicotine vape compliance check at the “One Dream” Sunoco gas station located at 976 Conklin Rd in the Town of Conklin, they seized approximately 4,000 unlawful flavored nicotine vapes along with THC products, The business does not possess a valid license to dispense THC products. The unlawful flavored vapes are not taxed. In 2019, New York raised the legal age to purchase tobacco and vape products to 21, and in 2020 the state banned the sale of flavored vaping products, other than tobacco flavor. The compliance check was generated via a tip from the Susquehanna Valley Central School District.

38 year old Gregory Rivenburg of Vestal, pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to a felony Assault charge Rivenburg attempted to stab a victim on January 9, 2025, lost control of the knife, but then beat & choked the victim, Rivenburg was scheduled to begin trial but instead entered a guilty plea, the conviction will result in a 6 Year State Prison Sentence followed by 5 Years of Post Release Supervision. Sentencing is scheduled for June 12, 2026, in Broome County Court.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45 year old Gerald Schmitt of Norwich following an investigation into a stolen trailer and snowmobiles from the Town of Norwich. Schmitt was charged with Criminal possession of stolen property, tampering with physical evidence & Conspiracy, after 2 stolen snowmobiles were found on Schmitt’s property. Schmitt was released on appearance tickets in accordance with New York State Bail Reform and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

The State Attorney General’s Office is investigating the death of an unidentified Binghamton man this past weekend. On March 7, Binghamton Police responded to the report of a man in the road blocking a Broome County Transit bus, he eventually climbed onto the front of the bus, resisted arrest, was taken to Binghamton General Hospital for a health evaluation, & was discharged the following day& was taken to Binghamton Police Headquarters, he experienced a medical emergency, officers administered 1st aid until EMT's took him to Wilson Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. The State DEC & local fire departments remind area residents that the annual burn ban will will take effect March 16th, and will run through May 14th this year. During the Burn Ban, people will not be allowed to have large open fires and the burning of leaves, brush, cardboard are prohibited. The use of fire pits with fireguards, small cooking fires, charcoal and propane gas grills are allowed. The Burn Ban exists due to the high risk of wildfires & grass fires that can occur during the early spring and spread rapidly due to the drier than normal conditions.

Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 44 year old Christopher West of Deposit following the report of copper piping stolen from a house while the residents were out of town. On Tuesday, deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked at a residence on Yarnes Road in the Town of Colesville, the vehicle was registered to West, Deputies confirmed with the homeowner that no one was allowed to be in the residence. West was located in the basement and was taken into custody without incident. The State Department of Motor Vehicles announced that their department helped New Yorkers recover more than $13.6 million in stolen vehicles, titles, parts and services during 2025. The department reported that 384 Stolen Vehicles were Recovered in 2025 Worth $10.4 Million, and an Additional $3.2 Million Recouped in Titles, Repairs and Refunds, That number is an increase from $11 million recovered in 2024.

On Thursday Night, Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol observed a stolen vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on State Route 17 in the Town of Vestal, A pursuit followed, to I-81, to I-88 into the town of Fenton & back through Binghamton into Johnson City, the pursuit ended when a tire fail off, the driver, 28 year old Romario Robinson of Binghamton, was taken into custody. 28 year old Shelby Medovich of Harpursville exited a nearby restaurant & interfered with the investigation of Robinson, she is accused of being a participant in the theft of the vehicle. Robinson and Medovich were charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument, Conspiracy, Robinson faced additional traffic violations both were processed, arraigned & were released on their own recognizance pending future court action.

The Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 45 year old Robert DeMuth of Oxford following an investigation into a stolen trailer and 3 snowmobiles from Norwich on February 6th. The Sheriff’s Office received a tip, they located 2 of the stolen snowmobiles in Norwich & the stolen trailer in Oxford. DeMuth was arrested Tuesday for Criminal Mischief following a domestic dispute, he was questioned & subsequently charged with Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Conspiracy, & Burglary for the February case plus the Thefts reported in Greene in November 2024. 36 year old Samantha Green of Binghamton was sentenced in Broome County Court to serve up to 6 years in State Prison following her conviction for 3rd degree Burglary. On May 1, 2025, in Binghamton, City Police Officers responded to a report of a burglary at 100 Chenango Street, officers reviewed surveillance footage from the location and recognized the Defendant as Green, footage showed her leaving a short time later with bags & a suitcase. Green stole numerous items including an IPAD from the victim, who is both blind and deaf, and used it as the only means of communication.

On February 19th State Troopers, members of the Oneonta Police Department and Firefighters responded to Chestnut Street for a report of a vehicle blocking the roadway with 2 people who were described as “unresponsive”, the vehicle had been moved into a parking lot and both occupants of the vehicle were awake and displayed characteristics associated with impairment. The Trooper also observed illegal drugs and paraphernalia inside the vehicle. The operator, 19 year old Joslynn Clark of Norwich, was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle while Impaired by Drugs and 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, The passenger, an 18-year-old male was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Both were issued appearance tickets to the Oneonta Town Court on April 7.

The Otsego County Solid Waste Department will host the Earth Festival event from 10 am. to 3 pm. Saturday, May 9th, at SUNY Oneonta, Chase Auditorium. Earth Festival will include educational workshops, Repair Café, and activities for children, Otsego County will be there promoting recycling and waste diversion practices that they developed over the years.

On February 12th, the Sheriff’s Office, the Special Investigations Unit Task Force & the Broome County Health Department conducted a flavored nicotine vape compliance check at the Empire Plaza gas station, a search warrant uncovered illicit flavored nicotine vapes, marijuana products, untaxed cigarettes and $18,346 in Cash. Faruk was released with an appearance ticket to the Town of Colesville Court, Rahman was turned over to U.S. Border Patrol, as he had failed to appear for immigration proceedings.

The Delaware County Firefighters' Association announced that they have been alerted of a scam phone call, where people claim to be seeking donations on their behalf. The Association does not solicit by phone, their annual fund drive letter was mailed in November, it is the only solicitation they make each year, to support the ongoing training and recruitment here in Delaware County. if you get such a phone call, hang up & do not give any personal financial information.

The State Labor Department announced that the Initial filings for unemployment benefits dropped last week compared with the week prior, the unemployment rate stayed at about 4.6%. New jobless claims, fell to 16,916 in the week ending February 14, down from 24,382 the week before.
