State Police are investigating the death of a Walton man who
died while snowmobiling Friday.  46 year
old Jeffrey Benson's snowmobile went through ice Friday, at about 6:15 PM, near
Chipmunk Hollow Road in the town of Walton; a friend that Benson was snowmobiling
with tried to pull him out of the water unsuccessfully, Walton firefighters
eventually pulled him out.  The cause of
death is suspected to be hypothermia, the investigation is ongoing.
Another free Christmas Day dinner is being offered by Gene
Schmidt & his family at the Sidney Fire Department on River Street, Schmidt
is looking for volunteers to help out:

Delaware County Sheriff's Department investigators have filed more charges against 29 year old Lacey Benson of Fish's Eddy, for 2 counts of Promoting Prison Contraband. Benson was being booked into the Delaware County Jail on Separate Charges, when she was found to possess a hypodermic syringe with the needle attached, hidden inside her body, later that same day she was found to be in possession of 2 more hypodermic syringes with needles attached, inside the Delaware County Jail. Benson was arraigned & was sent back to the Delaware County jail without bail.
State Police arrested 26 year old Thomas Harris of Unadilla for DWI, Reckless Driving and Harassment Sunday, after a trooper monitoring State Highway 357 observed
Harris driving at about 100 miles an hour. Harris was stopped; his B.A.C was measured at .20%. Harris is also accused of making numerous threats of physical violence
toward troopers and their family members. He was arraigned in the town of Sidney Court and remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000
property bond.

The City of Oneonta, Cleinman Performance Partners & Asbury Gardens announced plans to build a memorial park to Oneonta's late Mayor Dick Miller. Plans call for a memorial at the southwest corner of the intersection of Main Street & the Lettis Highway. Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig comments:

Herzig said that the project should be completed at the end of spring; the plot of land is next to a Victorian House currently occupied by the Benson Insurance agency.
The Cancer Services Program of Delaware, Otsego and Schoharie counties will offer free health screenings to women 40 and older who are uninsured. Today from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Walton Family Planning, 130 North Street, Walton appointments are requested at 1-888-345-0225.

The 53rd General Clinton Canoe Regatta featured 4 days of canoe racing, over the Memorial Day weekend, over 1000 paddlers from North America, competed including yesterday’s 70-mile endurance races, from Cooperstown to Bainbridge. Andy Triebold from Michigan & Steve Lajoie from Quebec won the pr race for the 7th time together, Lajoie explained what it’s like paddling with all the amateur teams on the river:

In the new 4-person division, the local Otego Oneonta team, of Bob Wisse, Cathy Grimes, Jeff Shultis & Larry Harrison, finished 3rd, just 3 minutes behind the 2nd place team. Harrison talked about their race:

The 53rd regatta also featured rides, games, entertainment, music & fireworks throughout the weekend.

6 more people were inducted into the General Clinton Canoe Regatta Hall of fame this year, including paddlers Jan Whitaker, Calvin Hassel, Mike Packard, & Rodney Robinson & original Clinton organizers Dick Sloane & Don Loudon. Local Paddler Mike Packard of Otego commented after the ceremony:

Special commendations were also given by the regatta Hall Of Fame Committee to the Benson Family for their decades of volunteering, John & Shirley Girton for handling race entries & results, and to WCDO for broadcasting the Regatta for 30 years.
State Police responded to a Delaware County 911 report of a fatal ATV accident off of Apex Road in the Town of Tompkins. Troopers observed 36 year old Keith Stratton of Bellmore, New York deceased in a shallow creek by an overturned ATV. Troopers reported thar he had been at a family party at a home on Apex Road when he decided to take a ride on an ATV, without a helmet. Troopers beleive that he failed to make a right turn and overturned in a nearby creek & was killed on impact. Alcohol was a factor in the accident, he was pronoucned deceased at the scene.
